    they do this so well in movies to make characters likeable. Ugh i hate it when people make writing a story look so simple, but actually it's so hard and stressful!

    And this is why I love Steve Kaplan. As a pro writer in advertising trying to make the grand canyon jump into film, I see so so so many brooding advisors, telling all us newbies this is a life of struggle etcetc. Then Steve arrives, and his passion and positive vibes light up the screen like a carnival, shouting out "this is a blast, this is gonna be fun, let's go everyone!" and that is the ride I wanna ride, that's the magic that enables the words to dance on the page. Huge thanks Steve. Hope to be able to say it in person someday soon. All the best. - AB

    I've seen a lot from this channel lately, and almost all of it is fantastic and very helpful. Of all the interviewees I've seen so far, I LOVE this guy the best. I fave all his interviews. Along with John Truby, I really feel like this guy has a LOT of important insight into writing and film in general. He really makes me feel like working hard on writing and filmmaking, and I start seeing everything about the process in a completely new way. Thank you for posting his interviews, he's in a class of his own. I love this stuff. Makes it fun.

    You want me involved, you want me to care and to give my 100%, you'll get more than you bargained for in every way imaginable.
    But I can't guarantee how anything is going to go, because I've never really tried any of this before.
    But I have a good idea.
    You wanna bail, this is the perfect time. No one's lost much thus far except a few bruised egos.
    You want everything to change, you give me a call.
    If I take anything seriously in life, I play to *win.*

    Not sure what he intended here, but I think Dr. Marvin's complaining in What About Bob? is wonderfully written. This guy literally wrote the book on taking things in baby steps, but he himself cannot. Everyone else loves Bob, but the doctor only sees his narrow view of "conflict of interest" and "inappropriate doctor-client contact". Thus he cannot accept Bob being there, but every time he complains he further alienates his family, and this dilemma finally snaps him and he finally explodes into a fit of rage -- and doctor, heal thyself.

    And sometimes, you just let off a little bit of steam, because everyone else doesn't seem to think there's any consequence to taking out their BS on you while you psyche yourself up to convince yourself that the actual journey is worth the trouble (which at times has been an outright lie).
    If anyone doesn't have the stomach for the real deal, then you'd best get yourself a new protagonist, because the practical implementation of anything involving me all gets dicier from here.

    i have one main character who's a female, and basically just a hot mess. she had made some philosophically debatable choices in her life and still makes them, but she's essentially a good person. i worry that by showing these contrasts i jeopardize the audience rooting for her. i have no doubt the audience can *relate*, but i need the audience to cheer her on at the same time. on paper i'm sure it won't be a huge issue, but i plan on using friends and my camcorder to see if it plays out to my satisfaction. it is, after all, what i term 'a chick flick for guys,' so i have to be honest with the character without sacrificing her 'likeability.' (the intent is for guys to see her differently than females, yet everyone should, if i'm competent, arrive on the same page by the end just having taken different routes to get there.)

    "how do you write a woman character?"
    "I think of a man, and take away reason and accountability."
    Best line I have never heard before. 100% agree !!!

    It is NOT a Misogynistic thing to say. It's true, that's women laugh. Funny how there are so many things women don't want to hear, but they can put down a man as much as they want in films and on TV.

    • @thuytienlives8487
      @thuytienlives8487 4 года назад +3

      It is a misogynistic thing to say even though women laugh, and even though Jack Nicholson's character is so likable. And you're being rude by saying that all women don't want to hear the truth. You are being rude and misleading by saying women only put men down. Because not all women are rude or sexist against men.

    • @thuytienlives8487
      @thuytienlives8487 4 года назад +1

      @Jessie there's advertisements that put down people of all races and genders, and equality groups who disapprove of this sort of thing. No need to be so rude.

    • @kevinreily2529
      @kevinreily2529 3 года назад

      The problem with American feminists is that men don’t get an opinion unless they agree with it. Having a different opinion doesn’t make it rude. Jesus. That’s pathetic.

      Saying women have no reason or accountability is the DEFINITION of misogyny. Have you figured that out in the 2 years since you wrote that comment?
