Great video, but knowing the cards and Myers Briggs, there is no way the fun loving and passionate queen of wands could be a pessimistic INTJ and there is no way the young fiery page of cups is a nerdy introverted INTP. Also, the slow moving conservative knight of pentacles could not be the showy entertainer known as an ESFP. I think they are divided into the MB temperaments. The wands are the doers- ‘SP’ types; the pentacles are the conservative and traditional ‘SJ’ types; the swords are the brainy ‘NT’ types, and cups are the intuitive feelers ‘NF’ types. This is the only way all of the court cards can make sense based on Myers Briggs imho 😊 Love this topic. Thank you!
Very insightful comments, thanks Sarah. I tend to agree. There are various ways that Myers Briggs has been linked up with the courts, but some definitely work better than others!
Funny how I was almost instantly attracted to the Queen of cups based on her personality traits and, interesting enough, I'm actually IFNJ as well. Thank you for the time invested in making this highly informative video, it has made my understanding of court cards a whole lot easier.
Excellent Brian. I appreciate you putting together all the different ways you can approach learning the Court cards. Some are very familiar, while others like the Myer-Briggs Personality types are not. I will check the video you link and add it to my list of things to study. 😉 Also, I like the way Marcus Katz and Tali Goodwin describe the Court Cards as they relate to the four worlds of the Tree of LIfe. They describe the keywords for the cards as an ‘Invitation’ and an ‘Engagement’. So the ‘resources’ of Pentacles becomes “Finding Yourself”, and ‘ambition’ for Wands becomes “Working towards”. So Wands express, Cups create, Swords examine, and Pentacles represent ‘a place’. They take this further to describe the Pages as ‘Channelers’, Knights as ‘Responders’, Queens as ‘Connectors’ and Kings as “Demonstrators”. I think these titles express the elements of the suits very well. The invitation/engagement titles for the Court Cards are: Pages-Setting & Readiness, Knight-Proving & Responding, Queens-Caring & Being, Kings-Doing & Declaring. They also place the Kings in Chokmah (#2), Queens are in Binah (#3), Knights are in Tephareth (#6) and Pages are in Malkuth (#10), this is because they follow the first emanation from Wands (Fire) to Pentacles (Earth). This is all explained in their book, Around the Tarot in 78 Days, which I am still working through as it is a very large book. I’m sure it will take me much longer than 78 days to complete, try 78 weeks. 😂
Very cool lesson. I will be looking at it again and taking some notes. I do tend to get rather stumped or uninspired by the court cards, so I love this. Particularly, the courts cards belonging to constellations from the major arcana resonates.
Assigning elements to Page, Knight, Queen, and King has always been difficult in my mind. I know the way you showed it is pretty typical but it just doesn't fit to me based on how I see the elements. Here is how I see the elements: Earth - grounded, stable, mature Water - Flows, changeable, emotional Air - Intellectual, thinks things through, logical Fire - Passion, consuming, spontaneous Based on this, I don't see Pages as Earth. Pages are generally portrayed as the most immature of the courts. In that case, I would put them with Fire. I might even put them with air because Pages tend to be focused on learning. Knights fit Fire the best to me. Knights tend to be impatient and want to take action, slow action in the case of Pentacles but action nonetheless. Fire is the most action-oriented element in my opinion. Queens do seem like Water to me. Like you said, that one is pretty much universal. Kings I can see as Earth or Air. Air because they have come to a part in their lives where they are no longer impulsive. They try to think things through and make decisions based on logic and facts. I can also see them as Earth because, to me, the Queens and Kings are masters of their suit. They are mature and they know how to handle it. Earth fits Kings perfectly to me based on this. So, for myself, I would probably go with: Pages - Air Knights - Fire Queens - Water Kings - Earth Though I still don't feel it completely fits this way. Based on how I see the elements and how I see the courts, this fits the best to me.
Sage's Silver Serenity That makes a lot of sense. I think it shows that whenever we try to fit different models and systems together (in this case, tarot and the elements) we can gain some illumination... AND some confusion at the same time! There isn’t a perfect fit, partly because we’ll each place a different emphasis on what the elements mean. I think what you’ve described here does have a lot of coherence to it, though!
It's connected to their qabalastic associations. I've tended to see it as being because they are the "most recently born" of the courts, which relates to the idea of spirit being new-born into matter - which is nowhere more overt than in the Page of Pentacles (or, if you go by traditional attirbutions, Earth of Earth). Lon Milo Duquette puts it quite eloquently in his book about the Thoth deck: "I now ask the reader to recall the Qabalistic fairytale we discussed in chapter 11, and the importance of the Princess as carrier of the essence of the highest high and lowest low. As earth of earth, she is the lowest court card of the lowest suit...the ultimate Princess...the Malkuth of Malkuths (carrying) within her body the potential of all possible possibilities, and the key to perpetuating the life of the universe."
Sage's Silver Serenity I agree with both of your interpretations of the Pages being either earth/air. Of course when we read Pentacles we automatically think stable, grounded, mature, etc. However, in this case as a secondary attribute I can actually see Pages being Earth. The reason why because of what we attribute Earth to being - it’s not only how we view the aspect related to the Pentacles or quirks of the Page in common view. It can relate to how we experience the world through the four elements: intuition (Fire), feeling (water), thinking (air) and sensation (earth). With that being said Earth can definitely represent Pages, because like you said they are a bit more immature and are seeking and experiencing life primarily through sensation (Earth) and aren’t necessarily going to be the court to be using their feeling, thinking or intuition. It can go either way, but I can definitely see why Earth can represent them.
@@Snip3rVip3r i agree with the way you associated them.. but it seems awkward in use.. which is why im glad i use the thoth deck... see my comment about how they are different ...
I totally agree with you Angela! Ive always seen the curious, learning thinking nature with the Page - almost like an apprentice energy. The Kings, grounded, stable, surrounded by wealth and lands... Earth. I'm glad I've found another person who sees it this way!!!
First of all I admire the work and thought you put into this, thank you. In my humble opinion the best advice here is: find the system that works for you and stick with it. That said, to me the court cards very rarely represent people, but energies that are at play. In the system that I learned the tarot with, pages represent chances/offerings from outside, for example the page of coins could be a job offer, and the knights represent moods, for example the knight of swords would be a mood to clear things up, even by means of fighting, and so on.
Thanx! This was very clear and well thought out. It doesn't match everything that I have come up with, but as you said it is consistent. Your talk and ability to give ideas on how to work and that everyone has their own way was the most helpful! Your talk helped me crystalize my method and I am grateful to you for it. Again, Thanx!
This was super helpful! Thank you!Takeaways that I'll be using in my readings going forward...*Predictive of someone who will influence querant's experience: Another person - Maturity level - Suit element - Constellation. {Eventually also possibly add Myers Briggs personality type.}
The elements to suits has always bothered me to my core. I read them the way RW does, but my intuition screams that swords is fire and wands is air. Which, of course effects the court cards as well. However, the way I have made a little switch in my brain is thinking of wands as wood burning which is an active fire ,and swords so sharp (sharp thinking) they can slice the air. One deck I have the creators replaced swords with arrows and it makes it so much easier to remember because of the arrows having the air sound in it so it automatically clicks.
I use the numbers in court cards..not like real people.pages/11-is 2/all knights are 12 /that brings us to the 3/the queens are 13/it is four/stability?stagnattion/the kings are 14/which brings us to FIVES/the point of breaking stability-thank you so much.
Hey. I'm here to answer your question. So...my feeling is that pages are earth, knights are fire. Queens are water (:)). Kings are Air. And I don't know if its related to this video or another one you did, where you talked about the kabbalah, you made me reconsider the whole way of looking at my cards. It seems quite obvious to everyone that the right order would be from 0 to 21, and it made me think about this impression I have that our happyness often relies in the fact of getting cleanse of the experiences we went through during childhood and the painful experiences we went through that "hurt" our soul...and to get back to the essence. Getting cleanse of the traumas to get back to the pure essence of our soul. So the 1st card would be the world (as we are incarnated into it). The judgement would be every experience that makes us constrict our soul to adapt it to what we believe is expected from us. Then the sun, as the material experiences, the moon as the inconscient building itself, the star as the recognition we strive for. Then the tower, as the awakening experience that might make us go towards the devil, or temperence. Bringing death to the persona we created.....I would love to know what you think about that. Most of all, thank you for these videos. They are so inspiring, and teaching. thank you, thank you. thank you. Aline
You are so very welcome! And thank you for your thoughtful comments. Yes, I love the idea of considering ordering the major arcana in reverse. In fact, you might like to know that there's a short and fascinating book that does just this. It's called 'Tarot Path to Self Development' by Micheline Stuart. She proposes that the archetypal journey begins with The Fool (in its guise as Trump 22, and representing impulse, immaturity, human-ness) and moves back through the majors, thus progressing through the various states and stages of experience and enlightenment, and ending in transcendent unity with The Magician - The Fool transformed into one who is capable of grasping "what is willed from above" and performing a true service to humanity. Isn't that beautiful?
I like assigning the elements to the court cards based on their density along with the levels of hierarchy. King - Air (lightest - cerebral) Queen - Water (light - emotional) Knight - Fire (less dense - visceral) Page - Earth (densest - physical) I know a lot of people associate Earth with maturity and grounding, but you could also look at Pages as a seed or bud that still needs to grow and be watered. They’re the densest element because they have a ways to go before they reach enlightenment like the King or Queen. Pages are students/adepts - seekers of knowledge, but I wouldn’t classify them as Air because they haven’t acquired that knowledge or spirituality yet. Earth suits them best, no pun intended, because they represent growth & potential, and the work/studying.
Thank you so much. That was the best and most helpful explanation of the Courts that I read about or listened to ever and I have explored a lot. No Valium needed I truly enjoyed your authenticity and knowledge. A breath of fresh air 💖
The argument is also that the Kings are like Nights or Generals as in the past the king fought on the battle field and should be on horse back the Prince should be riding a Chariot because of Swiftness Vitality.
BRIAN, Finished your video Loved it. When I read the Tarot I tend to use the Elements when reading the Court cards, but being an intuitive reader too I also see the court Cards as people in the cards and around the person that I am reading for. I also the way the court cards fall in the placement in the layout of the Spread is very important too. If I am significator card does it come in the middle of the spread, meaning to me the person is in the center of all of this going on,if looking out not facing the cards not really involved or caring what us happen. All depends on my spread I do and of cause the question being asked at the time of the reading. But again I love The Court Cards makes reading interesting with people and energy around the reading. Thank you so much I really am enjoying your series ❤❤
I like that you have the elements set up according to the Kabbalistic tree of life. Swords=Kether Cups=Chesed Wands=Geburah Pentacles=Malkuth Also I see what you mean with the order of elements. Page is Earth=2. Taurus is the second zodiac sign meaning Earth. Knight is Air =3. Gemini is the 3rd sign and is an air element. Queen is Water=4. Cancer is the 4th zodiac sign rules water. King is Fire=5. Leo is the 5th zodiac sign rules fire.
BRIAN Still Watching your Video I learned as a Playing Card reader close to 30yrs ago. I was taught The Court cards were people. Jacks were younger men under the age of 30yrs old or just represented a relative and by suit went by hair color and eye color too. Kings older men over the age of 30yrs old .Queens had no age, but depended on the cards around them , you could tell by reading other cards. I was also taught reversals with playing Cards. Tarot I learned later so still today with my Tarot reading I still see people around in the readings....Back to finishing this wonderful Video ❤❤❤
Well, I was looking for how to understand about the court cards. You just popped out intuitively. What I really like is the number link to the constellation. I have never thought of that. Well, it certainly earned my thumbs up and subscription to your channel. And thanks for sharing. By the way, I let the court card speak to me intuitively in the readings.
Also in Thoth, the titles in heirachy doesn’t necessarily translate to the titles in RWS. The RWS Knight doesn’t equate to the Thoth Prince and same with the RWS King to the Thoth Knight. If you flip them, RWS Knight with Thoth Knight and RWS King with Thoth Prince, the images are closer in depiction. Both Knights are on horses and moving (which is conflicting imagery if you pair the RWS Kings with the Thoth Knights). The RWS Kings are all seated on thrones, while the Thoth Princes are seated in chariots (no horses). Also the Princes all depict the Fixed signs, which are connected to the Kings in some teachings and appear on their thrones.
If you could make a video and a series about what it means for them to be facing each other or away from each other including the minors and majors that would be really helpful. If you don’t want to do that can you please suggest a book that I can buy so that I can read about it thank you very much
You might like to try Yoav Ben Dov's Tarot: The Open Reading, or Caitlin Matthews' Untold Tarot - both of those cover this. Although they focus more on older tarot decks, like the Marseilles, the principles still apply. Glad you liked the video!
This was a great video for me as a new reader. Definitely going to check out some more. I don’t necessarily feel like the pages being seen as earth is unrealistic. They are on new land, new earth, ready to learn and explore all it has to offer, etc. Interesting. Thank you for covering so many different takes on the court cards. Very much appreciated.
I was taught many years ago from a women who has now pass on she would be 98 yrs old now, we both had the same birthdays she passed her playing card reading on to me when I was 16yrs old she was a mentor and a very dear friend 😍
Somewhere In Time Tarot That’s wonderful! Isn’t it fun to have a mentor? I didn’t learn from her directly, but I had a great aunt who used to read the tea leaves. I’m sure some of my family see my tarot work and think “we know where he gets THAT from!” 😂
She taught me all types of combo, like 2 kings and a Knight for 1 example means Talk with the Law (cops) I have to many to list. This is how I was taught to read.
I'm working my way through your series 😁 Thankyou for doing these videos! You have a great way of explaining things and you make me laugh. Has to skip to the court card video because as a fairly new reader they just confuse me so this has helped! Thankyou 🙏✨💕
Just a note in the Vera Sibilla or any Sibilla system ie the Sybil des Salons and derivatives, the numbering you used here is used and written on the court cards which for me strengthens the association to Playing Cards. Wonderful video ! follows closely to what I actually do
I'm a little surprised you didn't include the numbering of the court cards as they appear in Milo's book: 2 for Knights, 3 for Queens, 6 for Kings and 10 for Pages, which would make the "classic" assignations easier to understand to anyone who has trouble understanding why they're like that even if they don't plan to use it. Also good job explaining the GD dignities on the other video Waite certainly did a number with that
Yes, I did consider doing that, but those numberings relate to Quabalistic associations which I haven't really picked up very much in this series - partly because I'm not very familiar with them. Having said that, I am considering doing a supplementary video on the Quabalah, and possibly comparing and contrasting a couple of different tarot/quabalah models.....
Wands are Myers-briggs SP types and swords are the NT types, as wands stand for the element of fire and swords for air. Makes much more sense If you think about it, right? You got the others right though!
It sort of makes sense - but like all Tarot Court Card correlations with MBTI, it doesn't fit neatly, and it has its own difficulties. For example, NT doesn't neatly correlate with only Swords/Air/Thinking, because NT types are *both* Intuitive (Wands) and Thinking (Swords). And relating all SP types to Wands is particularly problematic. SP types have the qualities of Sensing (which I'd see as a worldly, sensual, Pentacles quality) as well as Perceiving (which I wouldn't really attribute to a suit - although Swords could work here - but rather to a rank: the innocent, 'beginners mind' of the Pages). So the Page of Pentacles, for example, could be seen as very much an SP type, since this represents 'Earth of Earth'. But so too could the Page of Swords (Earth of Air); or the King of Swords (Air of Air). It depends on our attributions - and these aren't universally agreed. The ambiguity here is a reminder of the deep structure of the Courts. We have the suit attributions, but then each rank is also related to a suit (and not by an agreed standards - some see Kings as Fire, not Air) - so which takes precedent when matching them to the MBTI categories? It's pretty straightforward to relate some of the MBTI factors to the cards, but the system quickly breaks down if we get too sure of ourselves. Extraversion - Kings? But what of Introversion (might not the King of Cups be an introvert)? Maybe Pages then? Intuition - Wands. Sensing - Pentacles. Thinking - Swords. Feeling - Cups. What of Judging? Kings again? Maybe Queens? Perceiving - Pages? Queens? Swords? Pentacles? There's no definitive answer - since much depends on our own interpretations of these qualities and of the Court Cards. I've seen the 16 MBTI types and the 16 Court Cards matched up in several different ways, so I don't think there's necessarily a 'right' answer to this (and it's quite a controversial marriage anyway, which horrifies some psychologists and some tarotists, whilst delighting others!)
check out the Thoth deck.. its divided as prince, princess, queen and knight.. which is easy to assign the elements to.. princess is earth , prince is air, queen is water and knight is fire... i dont see earth as mature.. grounded yes, stubborn sometimes, but also growth.. like plants .. but very much material.. tangible and physical.. which i see as a bit more a youunger or basic view.. like the groundwork upon which awareness is based.. where you start.. can also be superficial or materialistic.. which i see as younger as well.. reliable and stable( which arent a youthful quality) but many children are very meticulous and practical .. but i dont neccesarily see court cards as age.. put perception .. the difference between queens and princessess is their approach to an issue.. same with princes and knights.. one more mental and logical or sly.. and one more agressive, passionate and action based..
Zen Dragon Excellent points - the Thoth courts do have a lovely clarity to them, don’t they? I actually look at those in my other video on the court cards: ruclips.net/video/s6cpwO7R7zY/видео.html
@@BrianCormackCarr haha.. I actually watched it right after i posted that.. And i thought the book T interp was great.. I need to go read the descriptions for the other suits.
I have a question! If am doing a reading so can i just separate the court cards then shuffle the rest cards? Suppose i get 2 cards from the major and minor deck and then to get more clarity can i shuffle and take cards from the court cards?
Absolutely! You can do anything you like in terms of how you select the cards. My only recommendation would be that you consider what *sort* of information you might want from the courts. Such information could include: - And understanding of which people (or which aspects of people) are important in this situation; - An understanding of which aspects of your own personality are important in this situation; - And indication of what combination of elemental forces are dynamically at work in the situation. Don't be afraid to experiment...
INTP as the PgW... iiiiiiiinteresting... I've never seen us assigned anything other than either Pg or, sometimes Q, of Swords. I guess if you switched the elements it would make sense!
My favourite court cards that I noticed come out in reading to represent me or my qualities are: Queen of Cups, Queen of Swords, Page of Cups, Page of Pentacles, Knight of cups. I totally love this numerical values of Pages ! Sounds very interesting. Just queens and emperor is a bit strange. 🌷😊🦄
Please help me. I'm trying to figure out where the whole grading of skin came from and why it came about. I've been searching but have come no closer to an answer as to why the colors are why they are when it comes to skin.
The Tarot Deck originated in Italy around 1420 as a gaming deck, copied from other gaming decks. But Tarot wasn't used for divination until around 1750. People in Europe - ordinary people and also Romani/Gypsy people used ordinary playing card decks for divination. This can be traced back to as early as 1410. Over the centuries the playing card suits changed from - coins, cups, swords, batons, to diamonds, hearts, spades, and clubs, and Gypsy type card readers assigned hair colouring to the card suits: hearts = blond, diamonds = red, clubs = brown, spades = black. The 2 red suits for lighter hair, and the 2 black suits for darker hair. This colouring would fit with most people in Europe at that time. When the Tarot Deck was being redesigned as a divination deck, around 1750, Etteilla copied around half of the card meanings from playing card divination, and later on Arthur Edward Waite, copied Etteilla's work. So really hair colour associations originate from European playing card divination, mainly done by Gypsy/Romani people.
yesterday it suddenly downed on me that if we use THE FOOL-as ZERO..ALL CARDS TO THE RIGHT will increase the situation in the cards we put-air-fire-water-swords--to the right..the situation is declinaning..

King - Air (lightest - cerebral)
Queen - Water (light - emotional)
Knight - Fire (less dense - visceral)
Page - Earth (densest - physical)
I know a lot of people associate Earth with maturity and grounding, but you could also look at Pages as a seed or bud that still needs to grow and be watered.
What an absolutely awesome and useful tutorial! Even with my poor concentration span, I was riveted! Thanks
Thank you, I’mdo glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Thank you so much. That was the best and most helpful explanation of the Courts that I read about or listened to ever and I have explored a lot. No Valium needed I truly enjoyed your authenticity and knowledge. A breath of fresh air 💖
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. :)
Thank you very helpful
The argument is also that the Kings are like Nights or Generals as in the past the king fought on the battle field and should be on horse back the Prince should be riding a Chariot because of Swiftness Vitality.
Thank you, so amazing ,original and different than other approaches! I love watching you, and it helps me with my tarot study. 😊🌷
Somewhere In Time Tarot Thank you, I’m so happy to hear that! 🙏👍
Superb!! Thank you!
I like that you have the elements set up according to the Kabbalistic tree of life.
Swords=Kether
Cups=Chesed
Wands=Geburah
Pentacles=Malkuth
Also I see what you mean with the order of elements.
Somewhere In Time Tarot Thanks for being here! Enjoy! 😊🙏
I have studied mbti and astrology so this was most helpful. Thank you
Great video! Thank you :)
Also infj, tested in college and again a few years ago and it’s remained the same ☺️
Thank you! I appreciate how open minded you are to there being many approaches according to the individual reader and emphasizing that.
Thank you so much for this video
Excellent class! Very clear and helpful. Thank you, great Ings from Brazil.
I’m an INFJ very introverted but close in the thinking/feeling category
Formidable, merci beaucoup
Somewhere In Time Tarot Very interesting! Have you studied the Lenormand cards? They lend themselves very well to that kind of reading, I think.
I've seen the 16 MBTI types and the 16 Court Cards matched up in several different ways, so I don't think there's necessarily a 'right' answer to this (and it's quite a controversial marriage anyway, which horrifies some psychologists and some tarotists, whilst delighting others!)
sorry//and lucky me..I just got to the end..after i wrote how I read them.
SO SWEET OF YOU.
check out the Thoth deck.. its divided as prince, princess, queen and knight.. which is easy to assign the elements to.. princess is earth , prince is air, queen is water and knight is fire... i dont see earth as mature.. grounded yes, stubborn sometimes, but also growth.. like plants .. but very much material.. tangible and physical.. which i see as a bit more a youunger or basic view.. like the groundwork upon which awareness is based.. where you start.. can also be superficial or materialistic.. which i see as younger as well.. reliable and stable( which arent a youthful quality) but many children are very meticulous and practical .. but i dont neccesarily see court cards as age.. put perception .. the difference between queens and princessess is their approach to an issue.. same with princes and knights.. one more mental and logical or sly.. and one more agressive, passionate and action based..
Thanks
I have a question! If am doing a reading so can i just separate the court cards then shuffle the rest cards? Suppose i get 2 cards from the major and minor deck and then to get more clarity can i shuffle and take cards from the court cards?
Absolutely! You can do anything you like in terms of how you select the cards.
My only recommendation would be that you consider what *sort* of information you might want from the courts.
Such information could include:
- And understanding of which people (or which aspects of people) are important in this situation;
- An understanding of which aspects of your own personality are important in this situation;
- And indication of what combination of elemental forces are dynamically at work in the situation.
Don't be afraid to experiment...
16 court card 16 mbti nice...
Thank you Brian but I am still confused ....HAHAHA
😂 I think the courts are sent to try us!
Masculine energy or Feminine energy......not gender....speak about this to others often :o) Thank you for such a great explanation.
Possibly a Valium, lol anyone else catch that?
Heyyy we have the same last name🤣
yesterday it suddenly downed on me that if we use THE FOOL-as ZERO..ALL CARDS TO THE RIGHT will increase the situation in the cards we put-air-fire-water-swords--to the right..the situation is declinaning..
