We also see some horrible examples of this real life, but I wont go into those stories because they're tragic and real. But since that's very likely *not* the case and we see they have a great mother (so even if they did have different fathers, she'd be good to both of them) and the film implies they have the same father...what caused them to be so different even in childhood? Maybe he was old enough to remember the good Mad Dog before the war and Josh was too young to remember the good times, so he only saw the bad Mad Dog and him being so young, it left more of an impact on him. So Jason grew up being more like the Good version of Mad Dog that we see in Jason's Dreams. Josh ends up being the bad/traumatized version of Mad Dog. In an alternate universe where Mad Dog never has to go to war, he'd remain a good man and father, he'd still be alive, and Josh would be similar to Jason, likely working with him in the same shop.

Bokeem Woodbine bodied this role.🎭 I'm teary eyed, because I was Joshua. The dark black afflicted young boy. At the end point, Jason could no longer bandaid and save his brother. His love life was more important.
I love this movie, it’s the most realistic black love story I’ve ever seen. Not just romantic but a lesson of self love by putting yourself first. I’m really confused by that random dude ‘preaching,’ tho.
This reminds me of my relationship with my baby brother. I’m pushing for a new and improved life, he’s chasing the street life. I wanna help him but it drags me in the process, so I decided to let him go because he won’t let the toxicity go, and I’m pulling to make a better life for myself
You can’t pour from an empty cup ! Don’t feel guilty or ashamed . His life and choices are not your responsibility or on you . Your both grown despite your upbringing and are more than capable of making your own choices . Move forward and win and remember even Jesus had to leave his family and even God told Abraham to leave his family to be great !
The late Suzanne Douglas was absolutely fantastic as Gloria and she should had been in consideration for best supporting actress at The Oscars. The scene in the field of flowers was breathtaking and beautiful. The soundtrack for this movie was popping
I say that this movie is unique in the Southern hood setting and the story. I did like the performances of Jada Pinkett...Smith (before she got disliked). Allen Payne, and Bokeem Woodbine here, the backstory of the brothers is depressing and well developed with the show and tell of one of the brothers in the movie that was kept under wraps until it was ready to show what happened that fateful night when they were children at the start of the movie. I love this movie and can't believe I took this long to check it out, thanks, Tubi. Tubi is a lifesaver.

One thing i love about these reviews is that it gets me to look at these movies in a different way as an adult. When i wss younger, i felt bad for joshua. I figured his childhood & jail made him who he was. Now i see him as becoming like his father (irony). That makes me feel that much more sad for jason.
Great review but as a Houstonian, I gotta make a correction lol. Gloria didn’t work at a supermarket, she worked at a fried chicken place named “Frenchy’s” which has several locations. I personally don’t care for it but It’s pretty popular out here, especially the one in 3rd Ward that’s located between 2 universities, TSU & UofH.
I watched this movie when I was an unsupervised child but I never knew the name! I just remember a few scarring scenes. I obviously didn't realise how frustrating Josh was. Who needs enemies when you have a sibling like Josh eh? Love your reviews ❤
I can totally see how Lyric fell in love with Jason...cuz lawd knows I would fold and Josh knew if Jason had somebody then he wouldn't be his safety blanket like he had been
this is one of my favorite movies i cried like a baby at the end because Jason really loved and was devoted to his family but when that devotion almost costed him the love of his life he made a choice and it was almost too late 😢😢😢
I'm someone who's been requesting this movie. Thanks! Bokeem Woodbine's character aggravated every single one of my nerves in this movie. Ugh... Couldn't stand him.
I want all parents to rethink the way you raise your kids. Your eldest children are not your second helpers. We are kids too. And we deserve to have a childhood just as much as any child. So when you adultify your eldest child just to take the load off yourself understand what you are doing to your kid and what grief you are giving them. Just Don’t have many kids or no kids at all if you scoop so low to adultifying a kid and stealing their childhood. If you can’t maintain then don’t do it, stop making kids suffer for what you can’t maintain. Also When you show your kids and unhealthy, dysfunctional, dynamic of relationships especially if it concerns both parents understand the trauma that brings to the kid. Kids are going through exactly what you are going through it’s so basic & simple and yet parents tend to ignore this notion. Stop adultifying kids, stop using hierarchy when it comes to kids each child deserves attention & time or you will miss things & they will have problems in life with you (they will hate you), themselves, others they will have a hard time acclimating in society. Emotional maturity & regulation is important to have when you have kids so you can teach them how to regulate emotions instead of scolding them for certain emotions being expressed & experienced. When you as an adult can’t even regulate yourself just imagine what that kid will faced with you & as they age. Kids don’t know & won’t ever know unless you be the guide you are supposed to be as a parent. You are a guide, not a dictator or owner not someone to look down on them or place a burden on them or bad title. Love is not ownership, hierarchy, possession nor control. Your kid will be the way they are because of your choices. When you notice mental health issues or signs of certain things that can’t be handled without professional help go get your child that professional help. Save that baby before they get older & it’s too late. Usually kids will show signs around 8 to 13 the time of puberty really. Sometimes even younger at the age of 6. Girls and boys deserve to be a child and kids can never be adults. Kids ain’t here to support you at all, it is the other way around. You are the gift that keeps on giving being the parent not your kid. When you have children understand the role you will have to take. It’s truly a selfless role many choose but can barely understand due to their selfish reasons. Kids don’t ask to be here and you can’t make them feel burdened ungrateful & responsible for your choice to have them. Tbh this is why so many don’t recommend raising a kid by oneself because it is not easy. And when you do it alone as a single parent you have to play both roles work & caregiver & it’s too much on one person and people tend to place their burdens on their kids. If you have a child & things don’t workout with the other parent lean into your village that’s your family & if your family is messed up & drowned in trauma as well then that’s no good too. Choose a accountable & responsible person in life to be your partner to have a kid with because it’s no easy feat raising a kid let alone more kids alone. Singledom in raising kids is not an easy thing & therefore it will be seen as a bad thing. Double edged sword life is isn’t it.

That's a tough situation to be in, and Lyric was very manipulative. She just wanted Jason to abandon everyone close to him and just up and leave, and when he explained to her his responsibilities as a son and brother, she made it all about herself. Even when her brother almost killed Josh, she blamed Jason for defending him, and didnt even mention the dirt her brother did and continued to do.

@@robertfranks665 Josh didn’t want to have to let go of Jason so his brother can live his OWN life. Josh was being selfish, not wanting to work on himself in order to get his life together. He was used to Jason sacrificing everything for him, never doing the same for him in return. Had Jason not learned to start putting himself first and continuing to “save” Josh (who , tbh, didn’t wanna be saved), Jason would’ve eventually start resenting Josh. And that would’ve been even more detrimental to their brotherhood. Josh was a grown man who didn’t want to grow up.
I didn't care for this movie(I'm peculiar), but the lessons are evident. Josh did EVERYTHING he could to make EVERY terrible choice possible, no matter what the circumstances are. I can relate to Jason always trying to save someone who just doesn't listen nor appreciate any guidance and support.
This is one of favorite movies of all time especially “hood” movies. I’d give it almost a perfect score 9.5/10. I really enjoyed the ending when you find out that Jason actually was the brother that killed their father. This stuck with me because in the whole movie you presume Josh is messed up because he went through that trauma and killed their father. Finding out it was Jason was significant to me because it showed that some people are messed up no matter what- no excuses. I also loved the fact that it showed Jason went through the trauma of killing his father(when he had no choice) and still ended up a loving and conscious man. Love this movie!
One might think making love in a flower field would be nice and romantic, but then you remember all the bugs crawling around. And you gonna ruin the flowers lol.
I'm so glad you reviewed this movie! "Jason's Lyric" was one of my favorites when it came out for personal reasons. I had the biggest celebrity crush on Allen Payne and loved seeing him in his first lead role. I also grew up less than 2 hours away from Houston and was happy to see a movie filmed in my backyard so to speak.
My roommate and I used to always laugh and repeat the “I ain’t never watch the sun set before “ line. 😂😂😂. Jason’s Texas accent sounded more like he just escaped from a plantation
Watched this movie years back and it hit me so hard and triggered me about my own childhood trauma that I ignored. Love how in depth you go into analysing such movies. Especially about how certain complexions are put above others in black movies. Colorism is still a thing. It's funny I had a conversation just a week ago about my regrets about pursuing my dreams and leaving my home town for 12 years and how my family has struggled but won't stop scapegoating me. I'm the one who is most rational and helpful but cos the family is okay with the programming they got from the narc monarch, most are far gone and a female cousin of mine passed last year and had HIV and was a sex worker and left behind her 14 year old daughter. It's crazy, I still choose myself now because everytime I try and help, I get burned and I have let go completely. Peace and love to everyone who is doing this life thing alone. ❤️
I don’t know if the creator of these videos will see this but I just want to let you know that you are great at breaking these movies down. You have to really go through this type of stuff to understand Josh. Yes his brother was always there for him but that wasn’t enough. He needed REAL help. And his mother gave up on him when she’s the reason they were messed up in the first place.
I can relate to this story. I chose to love and marry a troubled man. He had a lot of trauma in his life before I met him. I found out very quickly that love wasn't enough. We've been divorced for nearly two years. My second husband passed away from a drug overdose a month ago. This movie is still relevant today.

Ok so please don’t judge me, I’ve never seen this movie but heard of it. I’ll put this on my list 😬. Whew!!! The most reoccurring theme was PTSD. Both brothers had PTSD in some shape. Maybe not quite like their dad. Josh definitely had nothing to lose and nothing to gain. I felt for Jason who really tried to be the glue holding his family together and he like got overwhelmed by protecting his brother. I want to show love to Lisa Nicole Carson, especially with all that she’s been through outside of Hollywood for the past few years 💐. Lyric was good for Jason, you can tell they were destined to be together. You summed up my thoughts perfectly: you can’t help those who don’t want it. I live by this statement. Wonderful analysis 😊 as always. And thank you for stating that not all Southerners (me included) don’t always talk as you stated from the backwoods (even though you mentioned my home state). My mom didn't want me to watch this in the 90's at 15 because she thought it was too much of a traumatic film to watch at a young age. I remember watching this film at the cinema when it came out and really enjoying it. Jada sure was-GORGEOUS-back then,no wonder Will and Tupac was interested in her. Bookeem Woodbine played his part to the hilt tho. Low Down Dirty Shame is a good movie also. I miss black films from the 90s,they hit so many genres and employed so many black actors to boot. Now,we get the Magical Negro. LOL. Oh,how far we have fallen. GOOD review and video of a now classic movie.
Josh killed himself because he realized he’s just spoiled, he’s evil and his life ain’t worth saving. He was becoming a burden for his older brother that’s been a father figure to him, tried to save him and in return, Josh tried to ruin his brother’s happiness and would misbehave just to get attention and keep Jason from moving out of town
I still love this movie. The first time I watched it at the movies I was around 12 yrs old. My friend and I went to see the movie not knowing it was rated R. When we got there we couldn’t get in, until a couple in their 20’s said we were with them and got us in.
Other than the accents this movie is a classic. It's a relatable story especially if you got toxic family members. The sad truth is you can love person with all heart but some need to be loved from afar or just cut off
I loved this review! Really took me back to this movie that’s embedded in my life. I’ve always loved this film since I was a kid and it’s so true. You gotta live for you before you let someone else stop you from living. Can’t wait for “A Low Down Dirty Shame” in the next video! 😁. I immediately could call it because I grew up on this movie too!!! 😂😂 Shoutout to my mama!!! Lol Jada was in her bag and these movies were the catalyst of me being a fan since my childhood.
But Josh's family didn't try to save Josh. They never even tried to get him professional help. Unless your family is made up of Mental health professionals or you've sent all you can spare on getting help for members with behavioural problems/trauma then your family hasn't tried at all to help. Support is meaningless if you don't address the root cause. Jason was simply putting a band aid on a broken leg because he didn't want the stress or didn't want to honesty face up to the fucked things in his family. Like a parent who gives a kid nothing but sweets just to keep the peace. It's selfish and shows a lack of care. Jason was an enabler of both his father and his brothers. He's reluctance to face reality and stop things from escalating to a point where they all need to sit and talk with a professional might be a way of avoiding his feelings. He shot his dad and he's got bo ptsd after that? that's worrying. Maybe he's afraid of dealing with that says about the type of person he is? Maybe he feels guilty that he [the perpetrator] was able to deal with the truma more than his brother who witnessed it? maybe he blames himself for his brother turning out the way he did [feeling guilty that his bro witnessing him kill their father was what sent him over the edge] His brother wasn't a lost cause because nobody had actually ever tried to fight for his cause

Yup.
Honorable mention:
Ron is Lahmard Tate (Larenz Tate's brother)
Marty is Lisa Nicole Carson (Ally McBeal/Eve's Bayou)
This movie showcased some great Black actors.
And don't forget Alonzo is Treach from Naughty by Nature.
Bebe Drake (Ms. Pearly from Friday After Next) was a customer in the tv shop.

Bokeem Woodbine bodied this role.🎭 I'm teary eyed, because I was Joshua. The dark black afflicted young boy. At the end point, Jason could no longer bandaid and save his brother. His love life was more important.

I can relate to that rage Josh felt.. growing up in a domestic violence household put a lot of anger in me that I’m still working on today at 23…
One thing i love about these reviews is that it gets me to look at these movies in a different way as an adult.
Mine too!! Wished he would’ve just grew up and started being an adult already! Jason went through the same childhood drama, but made better decisions.
“Soil all between the crevices” I was DONE 😂😂😂
You are totally right children deserve to have a childhood filled with love and stability
Amen

I'm from Louisiana, born and raised, and most people I meet are always shocked that I'm from the South because I don't have a southern accent lol
Me too. I used to think we had a southern accent in this state until I heard a woman say "Darling" in Alabama and it was the strongest southern accent I ever heard 😭
I’m from Louisiana, born and raised and when I travel everyone thinks I’m Jamaican, not Southern. It’s weird that our accent isn’t considered Southern when we’re deep in the South. We’re further south than Alabama

I always thought that like why would you break up with your man after he just broke down in front of you and explained his childhood trauma and leave because he doesn’t want to get on a bus..? Like..? Lol
@@WowitzkayI know right😅😅 That's what I didn't get either. Plus he didn't totally diss her and say that he wasn't never going to go. It was just bad timing, and she shouldve been more patient. The scene that gets me is when he met up with her after he fought her brother defending Josh, and he was trying to explain to her that his family needs him right now. She responds by saying, "No, I need you."
@@robertfranks665so you're saying Jason should have continued being taken advantage of by his brother? In the name of family needs me?
@@aesinam Before I answer that, how was Josh taking advantage of Jason?
@@robertfranks665 Josh didn’t want to have to let go of Jason so his brother can live his OWN life. Josh was being selfish, not wanting to work on himself in order to get his life together. He was used to Jason sacrificing everything for him, never doing the same for him in return. Had Jason not learned to start putting himself first and continuing to “save” Josh (who , tbh, didn’t wanna be saved), Jason would’ve eventually start resenting Josh. And that would’ve been even more detrimental to their brotherhood. Josh was a grown man who didn’t want to grow up.
I wouldn’t say Josh wasn’t “worth” saving, more so everyone can’t be saved.

I didn't even know they celebrated June teenth back in the 90s wow😊
Juneteenth is a holiday most relevant to Texas, which is where this movie took place.
It reminds of why childhood trauma healing is vitally important.
Jason did everything he could but the mon didn't.

Ok so please don’t judge me,
I’ve never seen this movie but heard of it.
Bookeem Woodbine played his part to the hilt tho. Low Down Dirty Shame is a good movie also. I miss black films from the 90s,they hit so many genres and employed so many black actors to boot. I relate to so many characters in this movie that it is hard for me to watch. Great analysis 👍🏽
This movie bring me tears every single time.

Other than the accents this movie is a classic. It's a relatable story especially if you got toxic family members. The sad truth is you can love person with all heart but some need to be loved from afar or just cut off

So many families like this including mine can’t save everybody worry about yourself first.
Maybe he feels guilty that he [the perpetrator] was able to deal with the truma more than his brother who witnessed it? maybe he blames himself for his brother turning out the way he did [feeling guilty that his bro witnessing him kill their father was what sent him over the edge]
His brother wasn't a lost cause because nobody had actually ever tried to fight for his cause
This was my favorite movie when i was 8 yrs old 😭 Traumatic
Your reviews are great!!! I love hearing your perspective at the end!! Keep up the good work girl !!❤
I love this movie, Jason's love for Lyric was real, i'm glad that he was able to push forward! ooh weeee treach yummmy yumm yummm!! This movie gave generational trauma and curses. Jason and Lyric was razzle dazzling through all types of family dysfunction and tryna live right. Josh could cook though…with his crazy axx. On another note …Jason renting out a whole metro was cute…prolly why them heux’s never on time. Anywho loved the aesthetic of it all. As a Houstonian the accents was confusing though…I’m country but this gave East, Tx country.
