I planted some spaghetti squash seeds from squash that I bought from the supermarket. I am about a month in and the leaves are getting large and look healthy. My question is, will the plants actually produce squash or just stay ornamental? I have no clue if the spaghetti squash I bought at Kroger is a hybrid or an heirloom. I think the type of squash is called “Courge spaghetti” Thanks for your time, Deb
I'm so glad you've done videos about bugs in the garden. I'm glad you showed different types of damage and told us what bugs were most likely responsible. So you know I'm out there on my patio trying to match damage to insect. I've heard so many people talk about squash bugs, and I was feeling very thankful that I didn't have any. Well tonight, about an hour and a half ago, I saw a squash bug on one of my yellow squash plants leaves. I swatted at it numerous times; it kept re-landing on another leaf. Aggressive little creep. You can bet that tomorrow I'm going to whip out whichever remedy you recommend (I bought them all, except the oils - they're next) and give that thing and it's family what-for. That's MY food, NOT theirs. So thanks for helping me recognize, identify, and attempt to resolve these issues. Best to you and yours.
Good luck with the bugs LOL. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Tip for hand-killing squash bugs: if you don't have your gloves with you, snag a squash leaf that is fading/damaged and use it to grab the bug, like you would use a Kleenex. Then set it on the ground and stomp. Very gratifying.

This makes me feel better. This is the first time I’ve started seedlings indoors instead of sowing outdoors and I’m having a heck of a time of it. I started a whole new batch of seeds last week as a backup for the leggy, sunburned seedlings that I’ve got limping along.

Just put in 14 more tomatoe plants the other day. Still plenty of time. About 15 is the most tomatoe plants I've ever had. This year it was bumped up to 50 tomato plants, in a small area. :) Best plants I've ever had, so far. Lots of peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini and more too.
Keep it rolling. That is great Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
I planted all my peppers in 5 and 7 fabric pots 1 or 2 per pot and they are going nuts! Just started some cucumbers last week and they're up and growing. Also started some cole crops in the basement for the fall garden. My whole garden was put in about a month later than usual due to taking care of my 94 grandpa who fell and banged himself up. Sucks, but you do what you got to do, and it all got put in and is growing good. And Grandpa is back up and doing good too.
I love peppers in fabric pots. Hope he is fine moving forward. Good luck. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
OMG I didn't know that suckers on determinate tomato plants turn into production stems and produce tomatoes! I'm out on my patio hunting suckers like they're mortal enemies, making no distinction between determinate and indeterminate plants. And I also planted my determinate plants too deeply, instead of at container depth (mine came in same containers you've got here). Well, now I know. Thanks to you, Gary. Next time will be better.
Nah for determinates lightly prune if needed. Otherwise, let them go Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

@@johnc6228 I have planted since Feb this year. We've had a very wet spring but my squash and tomatoes are doing well. My poor cucumbers have had a rough start but I'm still planting and trying to get things growing. Believe it or not my citrus plants are doing great. I even have blooms on my purple passion plant in PNW
@@stargazer6130 That's really good to hear. We had a long cold night spring which delayed planting this year for basil, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers but they're catching up. Now it's 90's and too humid. Some garden centers in spring here in NEast got a sudden 29° and lost veggies and trees and shrubs got damaged. PNW? I lived near Snohomish, WA for a year. I miss the mild weather- Same plant selection as here plus lots more.
Thank you for posting this! I pulled up all my squash and zucchini because the frickin' squash bugs obliterated my garden, so now I'm ready to recrop! I appreciate these pointers!!
FYI! About peat moss. It is very dry and needs to be soaked first before using. You can poor water over it and the water will go thru and out the bottom and never soak into the moss. So soaking is the way. And if you ever let it dry out completely you can not get it to hold water. Weird! So soak it first in a container without holes so it will not fall out the bottom. Then add it to your pots.
i can't thank you enough for all the guidance and informations you have given us, i'm new to gardening and i have followed your videos on how to grow tomatoes and peppers and mine are flowering right now , i'm so happy thank you so much , your videos are gems !

Wow, great stuff as always, Gary (and love the Carolina wren at 13:00)! I wish I would have seen this a few weeks ago, although perhaps it's for the better as we had a brutal hailstorm last week that pulverized that part of my garden that hadn't been ruined by squash bugs and borers and early blight. Rough year. Now the NOAA has declared that a La Niña is forming in the Pacific, which usually means a mild and dry winter for us here in the Southwest. So I may pull up what's left of my garden and just start over and see how late Miss La Niña brings winter to us in northern New Mexico at 6500' in elevation at the interface of the Great Plains and the southern Rockies.
That is a tough year. I hope it gets better. I love the birds here. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.e roots but depends how careful you are.
Awesome new update, thanks so much! Good to know that it's not too late to plant some stuff to harvest before the cooler fall temperatures hit :) Keep the updates coming, whohoo!!!
This is a very informative video. Your using the wash tubs really helps me visualize how I plant in my 15gal (nearly 18gal) grow bags. They are very similar in size, so thanks again. Thanks so much for your video! Perfect timing because the cucumbers that I planted aren’t doing very well. I think I had too many plants in one container (4). I took two out and put them in the ground! I’m thinking I should start over but was concerned that it was too late. I’m in Baltimore County and since I am not too far from you, I am going to do it!
I just wanted you to know I have gone through your Amazon link a few times now, I'm on Amazon pretty much every day (don't judge me 😉) and guess what I did? I pre-ordered your new book coming out in February!!! Why didn't you tell us? So great. I can't wait to get it! Congratulations 🎉🍻👏
And thanks for the help with the watering. I lost most of my Zinna's and one of my tomatoe plants. It rained gallons of water for a week or more, then suddenly no rain and massive heat, my only roma tomatoe plant died from some disease that left it looking like it had been sprayed with mud water! No idea what happened, but I think Ill be going more towards container gardening.
I always put the pot in the soil and fill it with soil around it. Then you can let the soil dry out a little bit and just pull the plant from the small container out. The whole roots and soil come out as one piece from the small pot and it’s the perfect hole in the big container.
Great video and the timing is perfect- I’m just about to grow indeterminate tomatoes in grow bags that are about 24”x 36” and other vegetables also in grow bags.
Great information Gary. Funny thing is I was a little worried about planting more Tuffy acorn squash seeds in the garden today because of days to harvest before frost (Alabama zone 8a) This put me at ease! Thank you Gary!
Yeah. Worth a try. Make notes too then you can pinpoint a replant date Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Awesome, I'm also growing a heatmaster in my container patio garden, transplanted 2.5 weeks ago, I have 7 tomatoes set. I was wondering if it was too late to start a bush cucumber, now I'm going to go for it!
Great video! Very informative! I have some yellow zucchini and tigrella tomatoes I grew from seeds in April. Needing to replant them soon and this is great bc I can’t grow in the ground where I live currently.
Yeah I wanted to give a visual for everyone for the larger plants Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Hi Gary! 3:42 I see you drilled one hole for drainage in the SIDE of the buckets. I drilled my drainage holes in the BOTTOM (I'm using very large plastic containers and 5 gallon buckets). I can't change that fact now, but for future reference, should I drill holes in the sides instead? Thank you for doing these awesome informative videos.
So I do both. If the sit on earth, the bottom. As the roots grow into ground. On wood deck, the side and to keep the moisture from sitting on wood and to create a little reservoir. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
A little off-topic, but one thing I have been thinking about recently is what to do with my pots at the end of the season (Zone 6b Ontario Canada). I am trying to decide if I should empty all of my fabric pots and store the potting soil and pine bark mulch in large containers to refresh/use next season. Or, do I dump it all out and store it on a tarps? Just leave it all in the pots and cover them up and deal with it next season? Put the large containers/pots in my shed? What do you do?
I keep it all in the pots and in the spring dump it on a tarp and refresh it. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.
So I’ve been putting small logs in the bottom of my large pots before adding potting mix. It’s kind of a Hugelkultur. I’m no master planter, but I thought it would help with the water retention in the base. What do you think?
Shredded would be better in this case. As the log needs a long time to decay down. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I get yeah, I was really using it as a filler instead of inserting the shallower pan that you did in the barrels. And if I get a water sponge out of it bonus! Do you see it as a hazard? I have lots of branches and debris from my many trees, but I don’t have a shredder. I’ll be visiting your shop for some seed starting stuff, ty
Thanks for this information! I just ordered more of the grow pots thinking they would be for next year, but now maybe I will set up some smaller things for the rest of this summer. My order from your shop is scheduled to arrive today so this is very timely. One question - did you turn the galvanized tubs so the drain hole drips off the edge of the decking? I always worry about the damage to wood under garden pots, but now have a concrete patio and mulch under everything so it is not an issue. Maybe water dripping out onto something underneath can provide water for whatever you plant along the deck.
I have a cherry tomato question. I have 4 Super Sweet 100 plants, and, as you know, the tomatoes grow in clusters. They're ripening one or two at a time, and that's how I pick them. When they really get going, and I have whole clusters ripe, should I pick them individually and leave the stem they grew on on the plant, or should I clip their stem and take them all at once? Thank you!
You can keep picking them individually, but if you clip the entire cluster before they’ve started to blush they may struggle to ripen indoors like they’re supposed to. I’d suggest using nylons/stockings or an organza bag to cover the cluster if you want to leave the entire thing to ripen in the vine, to prevent pests from reaching them before you can
I would just pick as you wish. Nothing fancy. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

How do you maintain it after planting? How often do you fertilize? What other fertilizers do you use through 1 growing cycle? How do you keep that deep green color? I’ve just started planting in containers only due to the COVID and am hooked but I’m having issues after the planting cycle. Plants are not dark green anymore and determinate tomatoes only yielded a little compared to the amount it flowered. Love your Chanel thanks for the help

Any suggestions on plastic containers about the same size? I have indeterminate tomatoes and added holes to the bottom and they were showing really bad stress. I did the dumbest thing and let them dry out and then had them watered semi regularly but they are still yellow and stressed. I added some polymer granulars and vermiculite but they still loom sad and yellow. The top inch or so dries out but the rest is always moist. Should I replant to a smart pot or add some side holes? Same thing happening in an elevated raised raised bed. My peppers and tomatoes are all yellow!
If it really hot, I would give them nitrogen and just water evenly and often. Not much you can do. Repotting wont work right now. Good luck I now have a new book. The Modern Homestead Garden: Growing Self-Sufficiency in Any Size Backyard. Written for the beginner gardener. You can find it through my link amzn.to/3jHDBpc
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks not really hot here on Cali. The yellow seems to be from over watering or poor drainage. Should I still water on a schedule and try to keep the top few inches moist? Would mulch help or make things worse? The holes I have in my container are on the bottom, which I elevated to encourage drainage, are side holes better? I'll try feeding with fish emulsion and see if that helps.
I have a similar mix in my pot garden, but we are getting a lot of rain right now in Florida and the pots are retaining too much moisture. My plants are growing well, but seem to be suffering a little. What can I do???
Oh boy. I'm in 8A, and it's supposed to be 105 - 108 for several days and then above 95 for a week. I'm afraid to set out any of the seedlings in containers I've got right now. I may have false hopes for a Fall garden.... I'll be interested to see if you get a reply for your question.
i am in 8b and i plant seeds all the time. however, the seedlings have a super hard time with the heat. my sprout rate seems to be excellent but almost all of them die in a few days. so far, one squash, a cucumber, a few tomatoes and a few okra are still ok. radishes keep trying to come up. those are tough buggers. i also have older plants that are ok but mostly pausing due to the heat. i have shade cloth pr shade structures over most of my garden, so the plants are mostly not getting beat up. but i am in the desert, so 100-110 degrees probably over next couple months at least. the amaranth is finally growing up, as are the groundcherries. i am now starting microgreens indoors. i do sprouts and microgreens periodically inside.
My garden already got destroyed by diseases and bugs and this happens every year. I tried neem oil spray with soap but they started to get a disease a few weeks after planting. I’m going to have to rip everything out and try again and pray that they stay healthy. It’s all the humidity down here in South Carolina, it spreads disease like wild fire. I want to protect them but it almost seems impossible.
So a 2nd round might miss the bug cycle and disease cycle. Take some notes. A lot of people plant around them. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

Hi! I just used fish emulsion a few days ago, and OH BOY, the flies!! Now I have questions. Did I not dilute it enough? It's it just my particular area? What can I do? It was almost biblical!
Boy don't I know it!! I used it for the first time and the flies were all over. Not to mention something knocked over the supplies and dug into the plants
Give it a try. If frost come late again that will help. But you can eat new shoots and you should still get some potatoes. Take notes too. See how well the date you plants them gets them to maturit. Hi Gary I’m curious if it’s ok to plant a zucchini plant in the same container as a cucumber plant ? I’m just curious if the root systems are going to interfere with each other and prevent the plants from reaching their full potential.. thanks and hope to hear from you

Hi Gary, I have two yellow squash plans that looked amazing and all of the sudden the leaves are drying up and the squash is turning brown as soon as it starts growing. I've checked for pests, haven't found anything on the leaves . What am I doing wrong? 😬
Really great video, Gary. Question - when you watered in the fish emulsion fertilizer had you already watered the plants? The soil looked really dry to begin with. I'm new at this and in Las Vegas and I've been getting my container soil fairly moist prior to doing my transplants. Also - Thanks for adding your Amazon store. I'll happily support you with my purchases. :) Have a great evening. 114 her today!
You can do either way. Mine was dry. If you start dry sometimes it takes a bit of time for the water to get into it, so you have to water a couple more days. Typically I premoisten it. And I did actually soak it down a bit before the emulsion was used. If you start seeds later but don't have enough time left in the season for those seeds to mature they won't have time to give you cucumbers before frost. I'd say start seeds, especially if they're not competing for room, then you have the option open in the future to plant them up or not.
You can prune off a runner and put it in a bottle with some water in it. It will grow roots in a week or two. Let the water in the bottle evaporate a little so the tops of the roots get exposed to some air and then they can be planted. Same with tomato suckers

My cucumber plants keep dying , so I planted 3 more seeds in a different container I have two squash plants growing in . I live Zone 8B and don't have large containers per your requirements for plants . I can't afford them and I live in apartment and can only use the patio . I have some kind of bug that strips the stems of young seedlings down to nothing then the seedling die off . so far my squash plants have survived they are not overly large , blossoms come and go they drop .so no fruit sets yet . I have yet to see a yellow squash .
I'm also in zone 8b (Washington) and having a horrible time with cucumbers this year. The ones I planted in March are now 4 inches tall with tiny cucumbers. I'm still reseeding everything that's getting ate up by the slugs and snails. Only things doing great are the tomatoes squash and citrus plants. First year at planting a fall garden. Hope my brassicas do better in the fall cause they didn't make it with the slimers in the spring.
Might be crickets and/or slugs? They hate garlic, so sprinkle powdered garlic in the soil every time after you water. I started doing that recently due to the same issue and they finally stopped eating seedlings.

I'm guessing it would'nt be too late to start more pole beans either? I just harvest a few potatoes, about 4-5 pounds of mid sized russets and red pontiacs, without disturbing the roots too much. They were delicious roasted on a baking plate with a little Oil and salt. Better than fries. Strangely enough, the russets did'nt flower...

When you talk about removing one or two of the zucchini plants, or thinning them out, do you plant those ones removed in another container? Why don't you just separate them before planting?
Kari Hicks in case one doesn't survive transplant or in my case gets eaten by slugs. If both survives, I then cut one. I don't pull it because I don't want to hurt the remaining one. I feel bad to kill a good plant but I grow from seeds so always have too many
So the root systems are great intertwined. I would have to cut and pull and it would shock both plants. And I dont have room for the others. 6:14 "Those are 32 quarts bags" There is no metric conversion for a quart. OK, so here's the math: 1 american quart is 0,94 liter. 32 US quarts equals 30 L.

I always see you using non organic material, like vigro soil, and those plants are not from organic seed. Does that matter or is that over rated. You can reply or make a video about it
So organic is great from what it use to mean before commercialization messed it up. Seeds dont need to be organic. Thinks about what could possible be it a tiny tomato seed that would hurt you. Most seed collecting is organic anyway. If seeds say TREATED they will be coated pink or green. Dont use those and it is very rare. The bagged stuff has some human processed ferts in it. Nothing bad. Anyway use what you like, just know why you might pay more. Good luck. I think the type of squash is called “Courge spaghetti”

Is it too late to plant pumpkins?

Tip for hand-killing squash bugs: if you don't have your gloves with you, snag a squash leaf that is fading/damaged and use it to grab the bug, like you would use a Kleenex. Then set it on the ground and stomp. Very gratifying.

That is great

Good luck.

Ke Le works for indeterminate tomatoes as well. Cloned 2 plants with suckers this season :)

I put the holes on the side too. That way about an inch or so of water stays in the bottom of the container. A water reserve you could say.
So I do both. If the sit on earth, the bottom. As the roots grow into ground. On wood deck, the side and to keep the moisture from sitting on wood and to create a little reservoir.

So I’ve been putting small logs in the bottom of my large pots before adding potting mix. It’s kind of a Hugelkultur. I’m no master planter, but I thought it would help with the water retention in the base. What do you think?
Shredded would be better in this case. As the log needs a long time to decay down.

You can do either way. Mine was dry. If you start dry sometimes it takes a bit of time for the water to get into it, so you have to water a couple more days. Typically I premoisten it. And I did actually soak it down a bit before the emulsion was used.

Can we use homemade compost instead of fertilizer?
Oh yeah. When making a container mix, there a lots of way to do it. Swap out some other stuff for the compost for sure

Gary Thanks for the video! question. I also live in Maryland how many days do we have until our first frost? Thank you
It varies so much now. Sometime late October I would say. But the weather is unpredictable anymore.

My cucumbers still look really healthy, and full of flowers and some fruit. Should I start seeds now anyways? Or wait till they start to die off?
If you start seeds later but don't have enough time left in the season for those seeds to mature they won't have time to give you cucumbers before frost. I'd say start seeds, especially if they're not competing for room, then you have the option open in the future to plant them up or not.
You can prune off a runner and put it in a bottle with some water in it. It will grow roots in a week or two. Let the water in the bottle evaporate a little so the tops of the roots get exposed to some air and then they can be planted. Same with tomato suckers
Start now for sure.

Is it too late to plant potatoes?
So if you have seed potatoes, I have planted and 2nd season crop before and it works. No guarantees but I would try a few.

do you every get ants setting up inside your containers? Can you make a video about dealing with or preventing that?
I get them. And I put insect dust on the bottoms under the containers. They are hard to manage

Ok I just did this:
ruclips.net/video/tX3go_hwCis/видео.html
worked like a charm, and super easy, they moved out after three days
You probably have slugs or snails around. Get some Sluggo baits.

Does these barrels have holes in as well?
They have gaps but if they seemed tight a hole would be good.

No use of worm castings??
Actually I use them. I just dont always do videos on them. Ill be doing more casting videos soon. It is a great addition but the basics works for the big containers.

THere are no veg plants available in garden centers here in 06473
You can still start a lot from seed now.
Do you not put drain holes in your barrels
Why not?
The wood has gaps once cut. But a hole wont hurt

That’s a #4 washtub, for all the folks from the country . Now that’s what out with Cole and I never heard it called a show me the girl and wants to I’ve just always heard it called a number Number two2 number for number six. and then they got do you know bigger washer tabs for bigger fuck that that’s what we used to take baths in when I was a little boy.
I'm guessing it would'nt be too late to start more pole beans either?
I just harvest a few potatoes, about 4-5 pounds of mid sized russets and red pontiacs, without disturbing the roots too much. They were delicious roasted on a baking plate with a little
Oil and salt. Better than fries. Strangely enough, the russets did'nt flower...
Pole beans and bush beans are great to start now. Nice job on the potatoes. Mine are ready to harvest this week

When buying cucumber plants or bush pickles
How will I know if one is Male or female
Does one produce more then the other?
Cucumbers like squash plants have Male and female flowers. Females are the ones with fruit behind the flower. The males have long green stocks behind the flowers
Each vine should produce male and female flowers.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you
6:14 "Those are 32 quarts bags" There is no metric conversion for a quart. OK, so here's the math: 1 american quart is 0,94 liter. 32 US quarts equals 30 L.
Thanks. Ill drop it in the description
I think you need a tripod! 🤣
I have one LOL. But I was sure I could do it one handed no issue.

Good luck.

No one needs 35 to 40 gallons for a plant. That is way overkill. Feed them and keep the container un 90 degrees.
Not everyone can keep them under 90 degrees and watering is much greater with smaller containers. Especially when plants are large in mid summer. I dont think it is overkill.
