    Those are some beautiful carrots! I simply cannot bring myself to thin seedlings because I hate choosing which ones live and which ones die. So, last year, I tried making seed tape for carrots. It worked really well! I picked up some great tips from your video. Did not know carrots did not like too much nitrogen. Might be why mine didn't seem to grow as well as yours. Thanks for all these wonderful videos. I am a new fan!

    • @TowardGarden

      I like your seed tape idea, great choice. Usually root crops such as carrots, beets, ... do better in low nitrogen and high potassium media. So glad to see your comment and thank you so much!😊

      Oh my gosh I'm the same way, I rarely if ever thin seedlings because it feels so mean! I usually pot up all the extra seedlings (not carrots though) and give them to neighbours so they go to new homes and get to live out their little planty lives in peace. 😊🌱

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Год назад +1

      It is very possible for carrots to take 100 days or so to mature. As I show in this video and my other carrot video, you can move the soil around and check the roots to see if they are well formed and about the supposed size of the planted variety. Or simply pull out one or two out and check if they are ready. Hope this helps and thank you for getting in touch!

    I like your style. Very nice video. Was wondering if it is necessary to use containers so deep since the carrots only grow to 6 inches or so.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 года назад +6

      I mainly chose these containers because they are wide to get more carrots. Generally you want your pot be 2x the length of the carrot since the roots go deeper. So for 6 in carrots a 12" deep pot will be ok. Glad you like my video and thank you very much for your comment!.

    Can you give an example of “low nitrogen fertilizer”? I always end up with carrots with heavy leaves but very small body.. I understand that this could be due to high nitrogen content in soil.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Год назад +3

      You are correct. Carrots prefer very average soil and rich soil with high nitrogen will result in top growth. If you want to use solid food, one of the best choices is bone meal (my choice). For organic liquid fertilizers, Dr. Earth Root Zone (0-2-2) or Bud & Bloom booster (1-2-1) are great choices. For non-organic liquid fertilizers, you can get Liquinox 0-10-10 Bloom fertilizer. • @TowardGarden

      Watering is highly depending on the weather and I am hesitant to mention a general watering guideline. The most important tip is to keep the soil moist but not soggy. So don't overwater and don't let soil dry out. For carrots I usually water every other 2-3 days. If top soil is wet, skip watering. hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Containers are normally marked 2 (HPDE) or 5 (PP) which both are food safe. The ones not safe are number 3 (and some say 6). FYI, 3 is PVC which is used in many gardening piping. • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  24 дня назад

      Preventing is the best. I check my plants regularly and act with the first sign of any pest presence. For example for caterpillars or other worms, I use B.T. (a natural bacteria) solution. For other pests I usually spray neem oil mix or spinosad mix . If you don't want to use sprays, covering them with garden netting is a great option too. I haven't seen any plant pot with a symbol saying they are food grade. Instead, they are marked with the plastic categories. Containers are normally marked 2 (HPDE) or 5 (PP) which both are food safe. The ones not safe are number 3 (and some say 6). FYI, 3 is PVC which is used in many gardening piping, so basically if you water your plants with that water, your plants get effected by the plastic. Do your own research and enjoy gardening😁. Question: How do you keep cats from digging out the soil? And how do you prevent slugs from feeding on the stems? Also, how do you prevent flies? Amazing harvest you have there, too.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Год назад +2

      By growing in containers, these problems are a a bit easier to control. For slugs, you just need to raise the containers from ground, I usually have them couple of inches clear from the ground. Cats are the easiest for me: I have a dog on duty so no cats in our yard. But I suggest to use some kind of barrier like chicken mesh specially when seedlings are small. Once they are tall enough I don't think cats would like to dig them (not sure though). And my go to for fly and bug is neem oil mix, Spinosad mix is helpful too. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

      For fly and bugs I usually use neem oil mix. Spinosad mix (which is natural) is helpful too. And up to the point when seedlings are not too tall, you can use a garden netting to cover pots. Another great option is using yellow insect stickers around the soil. Make sure the soil is not infested with fly eggs and worm. If it is, drench the soil with diluted neem oil mix or use systemic insect control(like Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Control, not organic though). Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

    Hi, how are you? I have some doubts, when I searched about the best carrots to grow in containers, I discovered the "oxheart" one, is this variety really good to grow in containers? Another doubt, I found out that there are many varieties of chantenay carrots, are all chantenay varieties good to grow in containers or only the red cored variety? and the last one is about the weather, can I grow these varieties here where I living now (north east Brazil), it's so hot here and barely rains. I'm sorry for asking so much, it's because I'm a beginner and sorry for my english, I'm still learning.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  9 месяцев назад

      Hello and thank you for watching from Brazil 👋🇧🇷. Any short variety carrot is great for containers. Oxheart carrots are short and wider, and best for juicing. chantenay carrots are on the short side too and come in different colors, I like the beautiful orange color of the red-cored. You will know which one is best for you by trying to grow them. Maybe 2-3 small container of each. In general, to grow in containers, the depth of the soil should be 2x the length of the carrots. For example, in a 25 cm deep container, 10-12 cm long carrots are perfect. For the weather, carrrots perform best in cool weather, so I suggest to grow them when you have cooler climate. But if you want to plant now, try to grow heat tolerant varieties like Romance, Nantes, Purple Dragon. I hope this answer your questions (BTW you english is very good too👏). Thanks so much!!!!

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  8 месяцев назад

      Hello! You got it right but let me add few comments.
      The big bag of Peat moss (I believe you mean the 3 cuft ones) will give you a lot of potting soil, just keep in mind if you don't need that much, you can use just half of the bag. For the garden compost, try not to use manure for carrots; manure is very high in nitrogen. If you don't have much compost in hand and if available in your area, use Kellogg organic "Garden Soil" kellogggarden.com/products/kellogg/kellogg-garden-organics-all-natural-garden-soil/ or garden "Amend" kellogggarden.com/products/kellogg/amend-garden-soil-for-flowers-and-vegetables/ . The garden soil is a great option and one bag is perfect ratio for the one bag peat moss. Many garden centers carry them.
      And for the fertilizer, if it is slow release, add it when mixing the soil and every 3 weeks. If you want to use water soluble ones, try to use half of suggested dose and every 2 weeks. I hope this helps. Thank you so much for your comment and happy growing!😊🥕

    Next time don't make over crowded.
    That's why you harvest small carrots.

    Do I cover the seeds with dirt?

      You only need to cover seeds very lightly, either run your fingers like in the video or just cover with 1/8" soil. Thank you for visiting!
