I love how you are straight forward and quick to the point. A big shout out to You and CaliKim for my successes...I am a big fan! I have a question that maybe you can help with. I recently started clipping my leaves so more pollinators could find the flowers to pollinate , however many of my green zucchini were not getting pollinated and were dropping. I learned how to hand pollinate, however, the female flowers never open up (even when I'm up and out at an early time). My question is, why are they not opening for me to hand pollinate? What can I do to get them to open and get more production?
@ Corinna Quintanilla Hope you get a response bc I'm literally having the same issue. They never seem to open. Then they turn brown and the would be fruit shrivels. 😞

@ Texas Janet I'm in TX as well in a 20+ days of 100+ temps. My females never open, NEVER. So I'm hoping it's the heat and maybe by end of September they'll cooperate. I'm a first time gardener and it feels kind of lame to just keep dragging the zucchini plants out hoping 🤞🏽 things will get better when it's cooler. The whole reason I planted summer squash was bc so many resources said they were a great summer crop, but their zones might be summer is below 90. 🙄
@@FF-ub7bn I have lived in the same general area for many years and had at least a dozen summer gardens and never had a season where my zuchinni failed. On the bright side I have quite a few butternut squash.

Just curious why you planted transplants instead of from seed for this video? And how old were the transplants? I'm doing a second wave of cucurbits from seed directly into the large containers--but seeing this video makes me wonder if that was the wrong decision? I'm new to this. Zone 8b. First Frost @ end of November if at all 😅.
I do both. It is easier to do a flat of seeds and take care of them till transplants are ready, then dropping a bunch of seeds around. For instance, I didnt have all the container supplies till after they germinated in the transplant cups. But I also directed seeded many in the main garden. I'm not sure if i should try taking out some of the soil and giving it newer soil in case some of the oil soaked into it...Please help

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN few questions on the nitrogen: What does that do? Where can one easily find it (only have a home depot and lowes near by)? what would the ratio be for one plant??

Did you stake your heatmaster tomato? I have the heatmaster and in 6 weeks after transplant it set about 60 tomatoes, three main production stems, and I lost a stem because it was so heavy and the stem snapped in half, I tried to save it but to the detriment of the plant. I finally removed it and the plant is still flowering and looks like it is bouncing back. Do you recommend to try to save broken tomato stems that snap partially, but not completely?
I was debating but you helped with my decision. Ill stake 2 of 3 and show it in the next video. If they snap and you can get earth to then, bury them. They reroot quickly. I see you don’t talk anymore about Vermistera worm castings or tea anymore. Did you find that using the worm tea wasn’t really that beneficial as a fertilizer? I see you have moved onto fish fertilizer now? Are you using the Alaskan one? I’ve been using Neptune’s Harvest because they use fish and kelp formulas that also contain molasses. It wont hurt. But often they come in from other parts of the stems. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.e roots but depends how careful you are.
Hi Gary. I just discovered that something has taken sizable bites out of two of my spaghetti squashes. Any ideas on how I can protect the remaining spaghetti squashes so they can make it to harvest time? They are not yellow yet.
You can put mesh bags on them but I dont have any specific brand to direct you to.

My zucchini plants look great green leaves no powdery mildew and I have lots of pollinators but lose every fruit. The female blooms never open what would cause this?
High heat can do it. You arent doing anything wrong. Just wait on Nature

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks
Texas Janet you could try to give them shade. I don’t know if that will work but it’s something.
What do you do with all your produce? I just have a container garden with like 12 or so containers and just a few things planted in ground, and I have more than I could ever eat.
I give a ton away. With covid, it is harder but I will, hopefully, have harvest days for friends.

We have been getting a lot of rain. Do we need to fertilize again after all the rain?
Not the granular for sure. The water soluble should be fine too. I would just let it go and continue with your routine.

Hey Gary. On your first video you showed the holes you put in the sides of the metal containers. Did you put holes in the bottom as well? Thanks!
For these just the sides. I want to hold some water as a reservoir.

How could i make my own peppermint oil? My raspberry leaves have been eaten and now look like lace so I am suspecting spider mites. Those blessed creatures are also in my house.
You really have to buy the oil. I have the recipe on my channel and book actually. I sell the essential oil for making sprays on my seed shop. www.therustedgarden.com
a friend of mine told me to use a Horticultural Soap recipe that called for oil to help keep away Tomato worms...after i followed a recipe she gave to the T I started to notice that some of the flowers of my tomato plant started to wilt away and some of my stems and leaves have become translucent...is there anything i can do??
I'm not sure if i should try taking out some of the soil and giving it newer soil in case some of the oil soaked into it...Please help
Probably from contact. Give them some nitrogen and adjust your spray recipe. They will recover. The soil wont matter.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN few questions on the nitrogen: What does that do? Where can one easily find it (only have a home depot and lowes near by)? what would the ratio be for one plant??
Great video! How often do you apply the organic fertilizer and water-soluble fertilizers to your containers?
It varies on plant and plant size. But generally 1x month for organic granular and 2xs a month for water soluble on average. Less when they are small more when large and producing.

My courgettes have enough of flowers but not many of them become fruits.
Is is still not too late to plant Sweet Alyssum (I bought some seeds) to attract more bees for pollination?
Do you know (approximately) how long it will take an Alyssum to blossom?
I also have a few sunflower seeds. If I plant them too, will it help?
You can plant alyssum. But cilantro is even better in my opinion. Sometimes you just have to wait on female flowers.

Yep. Break the soil up, add some organic fertilizer. And your good. I have container soil refresh videos on my channel

When should I be expecting squash if I planted them from seed about 20 ish days ago? And planted in the ground 10 days ago.
jack rudden do you know what variety you planted?
Nikki Cooper green zucchini, scalloped bush, cocozelle, and yellow straight neck.
30-45 days after they germinate in this heat.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Great, thanks for the reply, and looking forward to the update!
Check them out sometime.
I still use it. I will be talking about it in this container series. I use it more for containers. Ill check them out.

all 6 of my squash died this week due to vine borer. i feel defeated. i'm giving up gardening.... i suck :(
@ Samuel Sim Please don't give up. I have been having the same problem. Depending on your zone maybe you plant earlier or later next year. I'm doing a second wave 🤞🏽 but have definitely felt like giving up due to 🤬SVB.
Nah. We would all quick if that is true. Plant some new seed now.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN live in nyc zone 7a. kind of too late for squash i think.
@@FF-ub7bn when should you start planting squash? i always planted around end of april in zone 7a. is this why svb is swarming my garden?
I planted my yellow squash in April. Looks good with lots of male and female flowers, but never at the same time, so I can't hand pollinate them. I have a VERY limited amount of space on my 6th floor balcony, so the squash is going to have to go unfortunately.
Try another variety next time. Good luck.

Some folks cut and save the males in the refrigerator for a few days to hand pollinate when females open. I have not tried that.
F F Yeah, I tried that a few times. I'm pretty disappointed, but all in all, that's okay. I pulled the squash and planted potatoes and purple basil. Next year I'll probably do pickling cukes instead of squash.
Nothing I have looks like this. I am very discouraged,
Try and stick with it.
