Difference Between Footwork and Speed in Tennis

    The difference between footwork and speed is what makes tennis so unique compared to other sports. Since there are infinite amounts of variations at which the incoming ball travels to our side, we have to continually move our feet to have a chance to execute our strokes correctly. Therefore, tennis-specific footwork is something that you absolutely must have to improve your game. Speed helps, but some players have genetic limitations and are, despite that fact, still able to play high-level tennis.

    Improve Your Forehand on The Tennis Wall (improves footwork as well) 👉 ruclips.net/video/zbEATlY3194/видео.html

    • @germanslice
      @germanslice 3 года назад

      You just need to have good weight transfer in your shots and good adjustments and that's why we do the footwork. I prefer to hit the ball from
      open stance whether its doing a toppsin drive or drive slices instead of using semi or closed to do them from because that open stance
      allows me to track the incoming ball where I don't have parts of me getting in the way of seeing the ball and allows me to also hit with power.
      For you need to have really good timing all the time in order to keep the ball aiming straight if going to uncoil all around into the ball as you do with the other stances... So to improve the aiming, because I don't always have perfect timing with using the uncoiling method Is why I hit with open stance on the ball for my aiming and generating power instead. I keep the hips open to the ball so I can generate the power by swinging at the ball.
      As uncoiling into the ball will work, but the ball doesn't always aim straight. I use the open stance instead for that allows me a much more wider window and alot more forgiving to catch the incoming balls in Instead of using this tiny narrow slow where the ball dosen't always like it and it pops off the racquet if your timing is off and it can't rotate around in time into that tiny window properly. if your timing is off...
      And when playing in tight parts of the court, I find you need to have more better precision aiming to place the ball in there. So I use open stance for placing my slices or topspins. I used to use closed and semi but my timing wasn't always perfectly bang on all the time to get the racquet into that
      small window that I had to time perfectly on the ball when dealing with advanced players so I changed to the open stance because sometimes the ball comes in too fast to complete the unit turns properly with the other stances and you get caught up late and jammed during the swing and you miss that window and when you miss it you don't get a clean hit...... So I made the window wider. I think the other stances are good if you got enough
      time to do them on the ball and your timing is good with it..

      @@ivanpalaca6230 I'm not a pro coach but i used to help assist a national coach in the coaching with his kids in their tennis development. The reason why I changed over to open stance is because I'm currently training with a guy who is built like a tank, or oak tree and is three times my own bodyweight and I'm hitting with him periodically to help prepare him for his interclub games. And he hits heavy fast balls with the Eastern Forehand. So I needed open stance to deal with that extra weight he puts behind the ball, that's why I used the power drive slice and the buggy whip forehand when playing practice matches with him as I use those to keep him at bay. For my job is to place the ball around the court and make it hard for him to return the ball and also to improve his fitness level is why I do that..

    So true! I started hitting against a wall during the COVID lockdown. I wasn't able to hit more than 3 shots in a roll because the ball bounces back so fast. Finally I realized that I need to constantly move my feet so I can get into ready position fast enough for the next shot.

    My first comment on this channel. There's no way I'm fit enough to do this - but can I still improve my footwork doing the same thing, but hitting the ball slower on the wall @Nik ?
    If that's not effective, are there other active ways to improve my footwork, before I get fit enough to do this exercise like you on the wall.
    I've been mooching content from here for months now, and just love the "intuitive" approach to the coaching tips. What to focus and more importantly, what not to is so important when you're learning technique - you can never get the whole thing right, but Nik calls out what to get right first. This key element is missing in so many live and online coaching sessions. I've learnt and improved so much from this channel, from being an absolute noob 2-3 years ago with a "wristy" technique, to now on my way to getting better. Huge, grateful fan of Nik and this channel.
    Thanks again!

    This is awesome content! I realised this for myself a couple of months ago when I started doing movement drills on the treadmill and pretty soon, I was making clean contact with balls that I'd usually catch with a weird racquet face angle. I started hitting with more intention and gaining control of the point when presented with a loose ball, instead of pushing it back and waiting for the opponent to make a mistake.

    Do you think that the intensity of the footwork is directly proportional to the increase in tennis performance? Just thinking of myself (Senior Recreational Tennis) I see that I must intentionally regulate my footwork to get a rhythm that works for me. Not faster, not slower. I think and execute better at a medium pace.

  • @Fernwald84
    @Fernwald84 3 года назад

    I agree, Nik, that foot movement is absolutely essential, not only to position correctly to the ball but to keep the body dynamically relaxed. What goes unsaid (and I think there's a good reason for this) is that the main benefit of good foot movement is neutralized by the inability to correctly predict exactly where the ball is coming. Just today I berated myself for "not moving my feet" when, after a moment's reflection, I realized that the reason I planted my feet too soon was that I incorrectly predicted the ball would come closer to me obviating the need to change my position. The reason, I think, that more stress in tennis coaching isn't put on correctly predicting where the ball will come is that this is mostly a matter of hitting tens of thousands of balls and learning by brute repetition. I don't think there are any simple rules or patterns for predicting the exact path and position of the ball as there are for footwork patterns or singles/doubles strategies. That is why I've never seen any instructional videos on how to predict the exact path of an incoming ball. Without that ability you will be over/under running the ball, forced to taking the ball too soon or scrambling forward to take a ball dropping shorter than you thought, etc. Your feet may be in constant motion but that may not be good enough.

    At 1:50 we can see how you deliberately flip the racket while loading for the shot, which (as I see it) is somewhat contradicting your statement that this racket flip comes about as lag from uncoiling torso first. That is also what I observe with Sinner e.g. and definitely with Sock (the epithome of the super loose/modern forehand), less so with Fedalvic.

    • @IntuitiveTennis
      @IntuitiveTennis  3 года назад

      I never said the racquet flip comes from uncoiling the torso first. On ATP FH the racquet drop and the initiation of the torso rotation take place simultaneously. The lag happens much later in stroke when the chest is already facing the incoming ball. The flip only happens on FH’s the lay the racquet flat on the outside ala Fed. What you are referring to is my early wrist extension (prior to racquet drop) which is used by few ATP players and the vast majority of WTA FH’s.

    I strongly DISAGREE. wall is the worst method of training ever. im self taught and for the longest time, for years actually i trained on walls. it actually does the opposite of what ure saying. makes u take unnecessary steps cuz ur constantly chasing the ball, doesnt let u set up at all cuz again the ball comes back so fast! ur backswing is effed up cuz it doesnt let you do the full backswing. also lotta times ppl just get lazy and let the ball bounce couple or three 4 times. as a result, i have all these unnecessary steps in my game, im not stable and setting up at all. im quite speedy tho yes. its just a good cardio tho and if u already know the technique then its good but if you dont and start out with wall then it messes up ur rhythm footwork and swing.

      @@santoshthapa8398 Of course there are? I'm not saying there's different categories for walls but not all walls will make you wait after 4 bounces. It just depends what wall you choose.

      @@amoggvenkat710 exactly. Its not like theres a wall with remote control settings. They all bounce a ball back. Thats all. My point is it does little to nothing to your footwork. U can barely manage a splitstep..karaoke step, hopping step.. none of those . But if all u wanna do is chase a ball all day n break a sweat then by all means do that. And overtime ur game will be just that. U will run around the court n hit or push the ball back.

      @@santoshthapa8398 I respectfully disagree. There are walls where you certainly have enough area to improve your footwork when hitting on it.
