    Another instructional gem nobody else is teaching >>> calibrating your footspeed to maintain a natural rhythm to the oncoming ball. Super smart and so much more instinctive than the faster, faster, faster approach I hear many coaches pushing. Thanks, Jeff.

    Great information Jeff, the top Swiss fitness coaches teaching big first move too. 2 steps to the corner and 2 step recovery back into position. Makes sense as the game is powerful and faster than ever before so we all need to evolve. Nadal's gravity step started a change in recovery techniques 10 or more years ago. I also see the return of the side on position (left foot forward) to many more balls particularly in women's tennis. The understand of the pivot and hip release has allowed for some older traditional positions to have new life. The hip rotation is bigger on a traditional setup so makes sense to use it when you get the right ball instead of default open stance on everything like Hewitt used, always thought it was his biggest footwork weakness not bring able to transition thru the short ball..

    best teacher on RUclips. hey Jeff I found that dropping balls and hit spots on the court has helped me a lot. I've been working on my the lot. I'll drop and hit 100 down the line inside the singles sideline then outside wide DTL. then 50- 100 cross court deep and CC short angle. then inside out FH deep corner and then short corner like Rafa does. then 50-100 inside in down the line. then drop balls standing near service line for putaway range. my game has made a big leap by doing this. I tell kids you might think this is kid stuff but MLB players hit off a tee for hours to groove their swing.

    I like the video.¨and agree with long steps. But when you demonstrate moving to a wide ball after the split step. I think you should "tuck in" the leg closest to the running direction (get et closer to your body) to be able to push of the ground more with it and have you weigth in front of the leg. Or land with it closer to your body if you where able to reconise a wide ball before you hit the ground after the split step.
    Thanks for making videos!

    I agree with big steps. If you can get to the ball fast, you have time to hit cleanly. Small steps should be reserved for right before you hit, to get yourself in the perfect position to hit a clean shot. A pro needs to hire you...
    You should talk about hitting against a wall. I learned so much by hitting against a wall. That's the best thing next to playing an actual player. It's like hitting with David Ferrer, everything comes back so you get more "realistic" reps (vs someone taping a ball to you to hit) practicing how to control your angles, height, and DTL vs CC shots
    I like your rhythm tip. Next time I hit the courts, I'm going to try it. I have always tried to get to the ball so that I'm as close as I can to being in a "tee ball" position, making the opponent feel like deer in headlights, where I'm ready to crush a winner. But I do miss a lot of those and it could be due to rhythm as you say.
    Cheers mate!

    Very nice video.
    Can I add a remark on point 5: Adjusting the pace to the ball.
    I do very much agree on the rythm argument.
    However, I was tought to adjust only the last step to the ball pace. So if the ball is slow, wait making your last step just before you start your stroke, so the last step is part of the rythm of your stroke: "Step - Hit".

Ball got shanked. I guess I had brain gas. Audio Excellence. Instruction excellent. Video image excellent.

    • @evanzzzz869
      @evanzzzz869 6 лет назад

      Happens all the time. I feel like my brain stops focusing when I am waiting on the ball. Positioning is easier when you can time it. I find myself off balance when I try to estimate where the ball will land and then I have to move at the last second when I realize I’m not in the right place. Of course there are plenty of other factors too.

    What are the pros and cons between short hopping steps versus big steps? More short hopping steps like Muhammad Ali. Or wider stances like your system. I've heard that boxer shuffles can be beneficial.

    • @adamae.7246
      @adamae.7246 3 года назад

      Boxers have to get more control on their footwork to be able to quickly change direction and rythm, this is why they usually make smaller steps than tennis players because tracking the ball is a more linear and predictible move.
      Actually, in a fight you are almost making split steps the whole time.

    5 Continued: you should be loading up for your shot right as the ball bounces on your side of the net.
    6: The footwork after the shot is even more important. take two steps in whatever direction you are moving in to hit the ball, AFTER you hit it. So if there is ball that is pushing you back, you should load when ball hits ground on your side, hit the ball and then fall backwards slightly for two steps and then recover back into the court. (Nadal) These two extra steps insure that you create timing with your legs. You want to feel like you are always moving, not starting and stopping constantly. Same thing moving to the side and moving into the court. You you have to tell your energy where to go or else it will go up and you'll miss or hit a weak shot.
    7: being able to move and keep you body quiet. You have to move in a way that is efficient ( ie large steps) but also in a way that keeps your body from moving when you hit the ball. The more your body is moving, the less control you will have. Control is the number 1 mot important characteristic to master in tennis. Power is not!

    Hi Jeff. I love your videos, they are extremely informative, easy to follow, and efficient, so thank you very much! I notice that in your 'how to handle low balls' video you demonstrated the karaoke footwork pattern for handling low and wide balls, but as you hit the wide forehands in this video you don't do the aforementioned footwork pattern. Will you describe under what circumstances each footwork pattern should be used? BTW, did you used to play at Ruth Hardy park in PS? I have played there before, I go to PS a couple times a year and love it.

    "Be in the air as the opponent makes contact." That assumes I will know as he makes contact which direction he is hitting. What if I cannot recognize the direction until the ball has not only left his racket but also traveled a few feet?

    • @darnellcaballes
      @darnellcaballes 3 года назад

      you should be in the air as opponent makes contact, so that you’re landing as the ball is coming off the racquet a maybe 12-24in away... ie enough time for you to decide which direction ball will be going...

  • @davidballou8693
    @davidballou8693 3 года назад

    You say that if you are already on the ground when the ball is struck that you are late. I think it means that your split step was too early so that you have already finished it when the ball is being struck. I think you mean that you should be leaving the ground just before the ball is struck so that you are in the air when it is struck. Does that make sense to you?

    • @adamae.7246
      @adamae.7246 3 года назад

      I think he means that most of players are spliting just when the opponent makes contact or even a split-second after so they are still on the ground during the strike.
      But you used to be too early you can also make a double-split.

    He didn’t mention one of the most important things is that you want to be on your toes as much as possible

    Correction Jeff! concerning split step: those who are (allready!) on the ground when the opponent hits the ball are not to late but too soon!!! They already landed when the opponent hits the ball. The should wait and depart (leave the ground) when the opponent is about to hit. ;)

    Hi! I am 17 years old and I started playing tennis when I was 13.I play like other girls that started at age of 6-8. But I have a big problem with an anticipation and reactions. Could you make a video about it? Thank you😊

      Jeff, Excellent, As a result of playing too much 'doubles tennis' over the years, my tennis footwork & movement let me down when I started to play in Vets ITF & USTA tournaments recently, your excellent detailed tips will help get me back in shape, with Repetitive Practice, Thanks Jeff, Conor - London 04 April 2020
