    Great instruction 👍 As you demonstrated the bending is at the knees. When I coach I like to use the term “ happy feet “ to describe the constant small steps necessary to adjust to the actual ball bounce. I was trained to play way back in the 1970’s and my coach always talked about Jimmy Connors footwork. I also played a lot of baseball as an infielder so adjusting to ground balls carried over. Playing on clay courts for helped because the bounce can be challenging. I have found that having my players warm up with mini tennis is helpful in many aspects because they are not trying to hit hard and often have to play soft low shots.🎾🎾👍🙏

  • @lgeiger
    @lgeiger 2 года назад +3

    1:22 It's easy to predict the bounce if you understand spin. Look at table tennis players for example. They predict the spin by looking at the movement of the opponents racket, the sound during contact and some even look at the stamp on the ball. You can't do it in real time, because everything is way too fast.
    In tennis you may have more time, but you will still struggle like Anna if you don't know how spin is produced and how it influences the bounce. Slow drop shots will bounce backwards while a slice will lose grip, slip and nearly keep it's speed. If people try to reach a dropshot in "real time", what I often see is the recreational players stop moving and are surprised when the ball bounces backwards. Most of the time they can't even reach the ball anymore. It's the same with heavy sidespin shots. You have to know that the ball will bounce more sideways when it gets in contact with the ground.
    7:23 You keep telling her to keep moving, but that's not why she has a bad position to the ball. She actually moves very well there. She just keeps getting surprised by the direction of the bounce, so she doesn't have enough time to get the correct distance to the ball. 7:30 Why do you say "good" there? She was way too close to the ball and had to adjust to somehow make contact with the ball and get it over the net. The "keep moving" hint only works when the ball doesn't bounce into the body. Otherwise there is not enough time to get your body out of the way.

      You can worry about that when you get a bit more experience. As a beginner you already have a 1000 things to think about. Trying to predict the future is a bit too much to add to it.

    It is possible to predict the ball it is just a matter of understanding physics and watching at what angle the ball is it and than track the rotation in the air and see at what angle the rotation hit the ground in combination with the pace and the angle of decent of the ball. I do it all the time and yes the feet need stay active at the bounce.

    I played a guy recently who hit nearly every single shot with no pace and excessive slice. Had a real hard time generating pace back because my returns were very inconsistent so I’ll try to use these tips next time I play him. I have a solid backhand slice so that’s no problem slicing it back to him but my forehand was getting me in trouble. Nick, how do you volley against a strong slice hit to you at the net? I get my opponents a lot with that and they end up hitting it directly into the net even if I hit it right to them. Is the secret to slice it back? I’m a 3.5 for what it’s worth

    A comment on equipment. Just becos a player is an adult it doesnt mean that she has the strength to manouver any racket at the beginner level, this is especially true for many petite ladies (eg. Anna)
    Secondly, using the lighter softer ball with slower pace and impact can help the beginner gain confidence and feel and build strength and speed. Basically it should be the same process which a serious junior will go through. Then slower move up from there. However it is totally understandable and fair that 99% of coaches dont or wont do that simply becos adult beginners are just pure recreational players not looking to advance to any serious competition level, so coaches and students just “let it be” Moreover adult beginners may also not want to spend so much on equipment. Most importantly, dont get injured, have fun and all the best in your game of tennis. Cheers guys!

    These tips are fine for the forehand and the two-hander. However, they are incredibly difficult for the one-hander. I line up so beautifully for my one hander, coiled, high unit-turn, elastic, watch the ball over my shoulder, keep my head down, step forward, dancing till the last minute. Suddenly, my opponent’s ball bounces on the clay court and it spins like a cobra. I look like a ballet dancer with my stroke, except that the ball is nowhere close. Running around with the one-handed take back is not easy. What I need is to meet the ball on the bounce like how to they do in cricket against crazy ass spinners, so that I don’t give the opportunity for the ball to spin. Many times, I hit the ball but the moment it touches my racquet it jumps into the net. I want to punish my opponent for hitting such irritating backhand slices. Be so good at the counter move that he will never try to test me like this again. 😢

    • @DonYang73
      @DonYang73 2 года назад +2

      @@vincetennis4572 nothing to disagree becos you have misunderstood. Nobody is talking about muscle mass. It is about the ability to at least hold and manage the weight of your racket. If you look at the vids, Anna is not able to manage her racket. An alternative could be a much lighter racket for her and then progress from there. Her strokes are way too wristy becos of her weak arm strength. technique is a very huge part but it is never all about technique. Cheers

My logic should be clear. 1) You claimed strength was the issue. 2) I pointed out that children with much less arm strength than Anna can play at a much higher level. 3) And since these children can do it there is no reason to say Anna cannot.

    • @DonYang73
      @DonYang73 2 года назад

      @@vincetennis4572 i was specific that she needs to be stronger on her racket wielding as she is clearly having issues with the weight of her racket. Children also use lighter rackets suitable for their level. Then adjust as they get better and stronger. The key is to help Anna improve faster and easier so to do that, she can use a lighter racket that she can manage better or she can strengthen her arm. Simple as that. For example, I wouldnt use a 260grm racket but neither would i use a 350gr racket. Cheers. Over and out

    • @vincetennis4572
      @vincetennis4572 2 года назад

      @@DonYang73 She is not "clearly having issues with the weight of the racket". What you see in the video could just as easily be technique related.
