- What's Afghan food like outside of Afghanistan? I try it at Afghan Durbar in a little city called Palmerston North in New Zealand. We tried all the traditional Afghan dishes like Kablau Palau, Mantu, Dum Pukht, and Bolani. Does this food look authentic to you?
During my travels in Pakistan, I got to try a lot of Afghan food, like Kabuli Pulao at Kharkhano Bazaar in Peshawar or Saji Chicken on the side of the road in Lahore. You can watch me in Peshawar's Smugglers Market in this video • Inside Pakistan's Smug... .
You can find Afghan Durbar on Google Maps goo.gl/maps/xPzJ1svEwTXahCc58.

How authentic was this food? I would love to hear an Afghan's take on it. Also, leave a Namaste Ji for little Hamna! She is a big fan of Afghan cuisine 😍

my best bro karl looking handsome thank you for your huge respect against cpec friendship countries lot of love from your best bro viki 💙
About spices, ancient Indians were driven by locally available spices and very particular about which spices to be consumed during a specific season. Its ayurveda to keep your health optimum. Now people are only driven by specific dish at any given point of time and absolutely no regulation at all on weather, location nor availability.
Afghani stan is an ancient name given by Sanskrit and Avestan aka Old Persian people which means Ashwa Gana Stan or the land of roaming hordes of horses. Ashwa in skt is horse which is asp in OP gana is horde like Ganapati god who us the chief of a specific hoarde, stan is an area.
I don't know much about Afghan culture but, I think generally speaking the quality of food should be good but, you also need a lot of seasoning since why not add flavour and make it more enjoyable?
I am an Afghan who lives in London! Let me know when you are coming so I will introduce you to my Mom and some friends who are passionate about food. I am a lawyer in England but love cooking. So my wife is lucky. Having said that I am an Afghan with an Indian soul. Zindabad Afghanistan and Jai Hind. I love all of your programs/films or documentaries - whatever you call them. Respect from an Afghan.
Where are they living???
New Zealand Auckland is beautiful
Afghani food is good 👍 I have eaten in Delhi.... We Indians have love n respect for Afghan n Iranian people 🇮🇳❤️🇦🇫🇮🇷
Most Indians are racist and anti muslim and pakistan. Stop pretending you are all about live and peace.
As an Indian, I wish to visit Afghanistan so bad. The culture seems spectacular, and I really want to try the food. May just have to go for it and stop procrastinating.
Wow man you can visit Afghanistan!!!
Unfortunately there are no Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan. They killed, raped and destroyed Hindu,Sikh and Buddhist people in Afghan.
It is easy and very safe to go to Afghanistan now. You can go to any city, province with no safety issues. Make sure you get your visa and connect with the government there to assure you with safety.
The first time I tried Afghan food it was a special feeling. To celebrate the end of a course, my pupils and I decided to eat in a room of the Red Cross in Austria. We paid some refugees to cook traditional dishes instead of going to a restaurant. We got specialties from Tunisia, Nigeria, Chechenia and Afghanistan. I remember the Afghan refugee fondly. The rice he cooked was outstanding. I remember he used raisins, chickpeas and white onion. He teared up when he saw how much we appreciated his food.
Some years later I had the pleasure to meet a young Afghan family with 5 children. The mom was only 27 years old. She showed me what she had cooked for some relatives. The kitchen and the table were full of different yummy dishes. She let me try some of them. Her kids were adorable.
I’m not Afghan and I can’t speak to the authenticity, but it looks great. I love my local Afghan restaurant in California. I’ve had Afghan food while in India and it was fantastic. I love the general flavor profile in middle eastern cuisine and I have noticed that Indian food is much spicier. I like both!
I am a Yousaf Zai from Pakistan but as we live in Karachi we aren't authentic anymore and follow the mixed culture followed by the other people in Karachi. The only thing that has remained Afghan in me are my looks, facial structure, and name. And, I am always attracted to traditional cuisine. Love your content!

I love your sense of adventure! Watching your videos is like getting to travel with you to such wonderful places. Thank you!
Hey man!! Do you want to visit Afghanistan?
Yea that looks pretty much authentic to what my mom would cook. Being an Afghan myself I wouldn't travel to Afghanistan right now with Taliban's presence. I was 40 days old newborn baby when we moved out of Afghanistan due to the war, but I have been back home 3 times since I got 18 and every time I didn't wanted to return ❤️🇦🇫🇦🇫
Btw I love your videos and namaste to your wife🇮🇳🇳🇿
Where are you living now ?
I'm Afghan. Everything looks pretty authentic. However, I myself have never had dum pukht. Afghanistan has many regional differences as well!
Thank you! I can’t wait to try it again! Hopefully I get to Afghanistan one day too. I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy there.
The regional differences are crazy! I'm persian but we love afghani food because its very similar to our cuisine but has like a twist of mongolian and indian influences.
afghan people are good. India love Afghanistan
@@DeathmetalPersian excuse my ignorance brother but isn't Afghanistan part of Persian as well?
@@MK-rk4no no it's not. It's a whole another country with its own language, culture which could arguably be close to that of its neighbours.
The one thing I saw you bypassed in your restaurant experience is Afghani naan. It is unlike any naan I have experienced in Pakistan or India (having travelled widely in both countries). Many mornings while in Afghanistan a nice fresh Afghani naan and tea made a great start for a day. It is a staple for the common man in Afghanistan because it is filling and cheap.
Love this! Keep em' coming Karl!
I remember my first time trying Afghan food back in 2017, i swore by it as one of the best cuisines i've ever had. Everyone around me thought i was crazy that i'd branch out from the local meat pies and sausage sangas. However, in 2022 I'm glad that Afghan food is now more noticed and consumed by people around the world. It truly is a beautiful cuisine and a very hospitable people who have had to overcome the shadow of war.
I concur. Went for thirds the first time I had Afghan food.
Thank you bro.🫡
Hey AJ ! Do you want to visit Afghanistan hospitality from close??
Why you don't visit Afghanistan?
@@leesteal4458 hey man ! How you got that?
As an Afghan living outside of Afghanistan and as an big time fan I really appreciate that you tried our Afghan cuisine 🫶 and especial thanks for telling the reality of those RUclipsrs whom visiting Afghanistan indirectly supported by ta***n and speaking in their favour.
I think it's really unfair of you to think of those RUclipsrs as Taliban sympathizers; they were perhaps trying to show the world your beautiful country and its people. The reason the Taliban are at the helm of your country is the way you guys gave up on your country, take some responsibility, please. If you just stayed back n fought, your country would still be in good hands.

Thanks! I’ll check it out. Aloha!
thats true. I am Afghan and I tried it in India. I am so happy you enjoyed.😊
Have you visited Afghanistan?
I miss the food from Afghanistan, I was deployed 2005 2007, my job had us building schools, hospitals and roads... all required meals and meetings ... I ate like a king and the hospitality was unmatched anywhere else in my life. I was lower enlisted and no one special... but the people where warm and caring despite the hard situation that still exists.
Happy Holidays to you & yours, Karl! Thank you for sharing with us.
Thanks guys for the great video! Nice people and great food, cheers
Afghani food is similar to Iranian food. Lightly spiced with cardamom and cinnamon etc and they use fruit in their savoury dishes - preserved lemons, dried or fresh apricots, dates and raisins or currants. I love the breads and flavoured rice of both cultures.
Dirty Iran
Keep staying honest to good values Karl. Selling out is lying to yourself, omnipotent reflecting upon your and everyone else's experiences leads to enlightenment - immersing one's self to other cultures is just one aspect to that. To me you are very enlightened, Karl.
Afghan food fills you up, and you must drink green tea (after the meal) which makes you relax and fall asleep. That bolani you showed is like eating a slice of plain pizza. Afghans in western countries also add bits of broccoli and mozzarella cheese to it (instead of yogurt), especially in colder weather.
Good Morning NZ! You guys are 17 hours ahead of Chicago and I'm sure much, much warmer than it is here. I enjoyed seeing you two trying all those Afghan dishes. Will have to give it a go sometime! Karl, not only are you the coolest Indophile I know, but you also make trying all those mouthwatering dishes from India, etc. such a pleasant experience. You are a true foodie! I hope Manisha is enjoying herself. I was wondering if she is going to get to know the South Island, Christchurc? I know that it's a ways away, but it too is beautiful. Have a great weekend!
Make that 19 hours ahead of ChiTown!

I need to try Afghan dishes immediately! Your channel really blows the doors wide open to the West on showing all these wonderful people and their cultures. Giving real insight, from the field to the camera. This is very much needed in these troubling times. Thank you brother, God be with you and God bless you🙏.
Nice shirt and shorts! Besides, it is an interesting topic considering how gorgeous Afghanistan is. Afghan Atalan to the team!
Pulao looked good, that would be my pick. Also, Hamna is so adorable! ☺️
There used to be a restaurant here in Chicago called HELMUND owned by the Karzai family. Run by Ahmed Wali Karzai specifically. He is former Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai's brother. So, I would consider it authentic. I used to eat there fairly often. Karl, you repeatedly compared the cuisine to Pakistani and Indian saying it was not as spicy as those. What you neglected to take into consideration was the influence from the other side of Afghanistan - the Persian side. It's less spicy than Indian but more aromatic yet still with a complex palette of spices. When I ate at the HELMUND, it was the Persian influence that constantly came to my mind. There are great Persian restaurants here notably REZA'S.
I grew up next to an Afghani cuisine restaurant. “Bahamian”
Wonderful people, great food.
Its nice you finally showing us your hometown now karl! Greets from the UK mate

Bro, that food looked flippin' awesome! Beats the pulp out of typical American food imo & you got to play with the baby lol, I'd call it a good day : )
Woww, everything looked so delicious 👌👌
You've got to try the bolani with yogurt sauce. It's next level when dipped especially with cilantro chatney. I also recommend trying Aush, it's a soup and it's amazing. Favorite soup of all time. Some other favorite dishes of mine are, Chapli kabob, bonjon borani, katchalu, and sabzi. All are delicious and worth a try, but my all time favorite Afghan dish is Shola. My dad makes it every time I come home to visit. I am blessed to be half Afghan and grew up eating the most delicious food thanks to my dad.
Also you have to try torshi, it's spicy pickled vegetables that you eat with your food. So so good!
I would have also ordered Mantu and Bolani as my favourites! :) They taste extraordinary good and the food seems to be very authentic.
Buen video se ve cool

I went to a Middle Eastern Association meeting here in New York. I had Afghan food and went back for seconds and thirds. It was the same as something I would get here in an Indian restaurant.
The food looks really tasty, and I would try it since it is not too spicy. I do like sweet rice pudding. Bolani look good.

You are among my favorite youtuber Karl! I wish to meet you someday.
Same here!
I have spent time in Afghanistan over the years, prior to the resurgence of the current regime. I enjoyed working with Afghans, all of whom loved to share their food and their culture. My favorite Kabuli Pulau had cashews in it, along with the raisins and carrots. It was not spicy, so I used to eat it with a dark green, very spicy, chili sauce from Pakistan. Also I love Afghan naan, and I have not been able to find comparable naan from anywhere else. Such a simple food, but the naan in Afghanistan was a meal in itself some days. Great video, I'm really enjoying the views of NZ.
