- The B-52s (styled as The B-52's prior to 2008) are an American new wave band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The original line-up consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion), Ricky Wilson (guitar), and Keith Strickland (drums, guitar, keyboards). Ricky Wilson died from AIDS-related illness in 1985, and Strickland switched from drums to lead guitar. The band also added touring members for albums and live performances.
This song was recently covered by Juno Birch, a confused alien housewife from the ‘60s with over 200,000 Instagram followers. Juno Birch, who looks like she just fell out of the sky and is trying to blend in as a human, is a drag artist with one of the most unique styles attached to her name.

Is it me or is this absolutely mesmerising?
It's awesome
it is definitely not just you
but you DO have good taste >:)
I am 58 yrs old, and I am quite convinced that the Breakdown, and guitar solo, had a MAJOR influence on the "dance moves" that are evident in this video. I love the B52's with each and every passing day!
Yep you naild it Robert, saw these guys in 1990, at Festival Hall , Brisbane, Im 55 and they gave off a wholesome, energetic vibe. Great Band one of ,y faves
These are not just musicians, they are artists, actors and performers
it was an art school... that RuPaul and REM were at as well
infatuated with Cindy
Also Comedians.
Masterminds.
Cindy Wilson is a babe.😘
Cindy at her best. A shy woman, yet she belts out the words. I love the awkward dancing, and her facial tensions. Truly amazing.
As a musician I've always liked playing shows barefoot. The feeling of the stage under my feet kinda grounded me there, I guess. Seeing Cindy doing the same thing here makes me feel less weird about doing it 😆
Bravery is sexy AF!

@@tomward9140 They are far from kids and definitely not innocent. When you lose the most valuable thing you ever laid your eyes on and someone else has it the trauma makes you revert back into your inner child because that's all you know for sure.. you. Some wise man wrote a book about a pearl diver to make it clear for folks😜. Carl Jung and my honky Freud made it pretty clear. It's a sad song that makes me want to get up and dance(if I could walk)I'm not sure why your sentences are so short but I agree. You can tell by the look in all their eyes they're putting their hearts into it. The human heart is so beautiful when it shines. I can't help but think of the insecurities Cindy had to fight and overcome up there, but yet she's one of the most beautiful ladies I've ever laid eye's on growing up. Clair is beautiful by all the public standards but I always swooned when I saw Cindy! Such strong spirits, all of them! Unique and unashamed! A huge part of my childhood!! I hope you get that sentence thing worked out. Remember, soap boxes are inherently slippery things to stand on if that's what that was about. Not really sure. Highest blessings! You have great taste in music!!
Cindy is an absolute goddess here! Or anywhere, for that matter! Most unassumingly sexy woman ever!
I just love how everyone in the band just supports. It’s totally Cindy’s moment
Is because the playback
@@cristobalmaiden You don't get it.
Monterino, agreed, this is something that likely has been underappreciated over the decades. The B52s were a team effort, Fred was always letting the girls do their thing, and boy could they take it... 52 Girls? Wonderful harmonies, such a fun band. I can only imagine how much fun their local shows were with all their friends in attendance.
Awww...she was the Kid Sister if the band. Still a teenager in 1980.
@@knowhere60 Close, Cindy was born in 1957, so 23 in 1980, but what a voice and cute too. She was a teenager when they first formed in 1976. You are right, she was the kid sister, the youngest member of an amazing band.
I used to think this was just an OK song, and didn't think much about it. But only recently have I come to appreciate it and realize that it's probably my favorite song of theirs now.
I totally agree . They got famous in the Uk after love shack - and o listened to earlier tracks in the early 90s . It a strange track - but I really like it .
This was always my favorite! I went cross country in a old Valiant listening to B52’s & Wild Planet with three friends. It was the best

I've been waking up with in my head for days❤!
I bought the remix it's banging
The Best New Wave band ever , Their music keeps me young.
Can you imagine being that young - and just letting it rip like they did. Reckless Abandon!
Even though it was during the new wave era, B52’s have a distinct sound signature
And unmistakably American. @@Twica973
Thank you Cindy, Kate, Fred, Keith, and Ricky (RIP) for music that kept me sane in high school and makes me smile in middle-age.
Cindy is perfect here, Her voice, her moves. Singing from the deepest parts of her being. I am captivated.
Agree, captivated also. Watching her eyes. She seems to give brother Ricky a serious glance.
Unfortunately, perfect because she is lip synching. Love the passion she laid down on the album, but really wish this had been live.
it was a playback - top of the pops...
A playback of them lip synching. I wish they had played it live on Top of the Pops. This is them lip synching to the album track. Still love seeing them!
@@ShooLipps me too! :)
My favorite B-52s song. I don't know how Cindy could sing this song every night without shredding her vocal chords. She was 100% dedicated to the song, even when they played it live.
Her vocals in dance this mess around are also pretty sick!!!!
It's a song about suicide, so I'm glad and impressed with how serious they perform this one.
@@fabisayshiwhat makes you think its about suicide?

Maybe they misunderstood the line "Head's in a whirlpool"?

Although the band downplayed themselves to appear nonchalant and casual, the B52's were a hard working group who did not stop until the sound they wanted was perfected to their satisfaction. The more I listen to them, the more I admire their talent, especially Ricky's guitar work. Absolutely brilliant he was.
They all were what a great sound ,and look ,they had.
I concur. Their sound is as close to perfection as you can get.
Agree. Ricky was a talented guitar player. Had a great tone & style.
Dude Ricky is one of my absolute favorite guitar players of all time. Cindy is just mind blowing on this track tho
Absolutely true! Their style incorporated more than crazy pop, notably some great jazzy interludes, and some complex instrumental and vocal jewels! Very underrated as serious musicians!! I love them!
One band. Three of the most distinct vocalists in rock history.
I agree 100%
One of the first records I bought with my own money.
@TART 140 BPM Experimental a shoemaker at best.
Wait til you hear the drummer.
Fred is very distinctive in a Biz Markie kinda way
No one ever talks about Kate’s bass keyboard playing. She made this song with Ricky’s quirky guitar and Cindy’s amazing vocals. I’m still in love with Cindy after all these years! 😍🥰😘🤩
that's exactly what I was wondering? Is she playing the bass on the keyboard? 😁
@@bruno_py Yes. And despite there being *rumors* about Ricky playing bass and guitar at the same time, it's not true - he only ever played Guitar. Though one of his many guitar tunings was downtuned close to Baritone territory, he played no Bass notes.
There's so much to this band. Unique, space-age party music. Part nerdy, part not giving a fuc&. Part sarcastic. Hot women, cool dudes. All in for each other. Total team. For me, the tone is set by Rick, that sound, and he had no ego; in background, but his unique sound was the foundation. Strange lyrics that weren't absurd. Can hear their sound in so many bands that followed. Who wouldn't want to be young again and dance all night to the B-52's? Love them.
80s Cocaine and B52s. Sounds amazing
Ricky Wilson was an insanely creative guitar player who doesn't really get the credit he deserves. Ricky Wilson was awesome.
So true! In many ways it is he who created the groove.
I love Bouncing off the Satellites, its crazy, he was a genius
imagine dying because a gay dude with aids blew his wad into your asshole...ffs
I believe he got his signature sound by removing a couple of strings from his guitar!
@@scotmark Wow, Never knew that ! thank you
Cindy's songs with the band always had a special something. Underrated vocalist.
i had no idea i am utterly blown away and i've been listening to them since 79
@MrTherealpad Man, so very true.
Agree! Love Kate too, but Cindy’s voice is so rich and soulful.
@MrTherealpad and an underrated keyboard player who played base keyboard with one hand and a lead with the other (shades of the Doors) while singing. Like you said, underrated band.
It's in her tone and intonations. They make her mesmerizing. Not much range.
Cindy Wilson was blessed with some real charisma.
A pure church siren...laying it out for all to hear, mesmerizing...

Not many would realize that Cindy was the baby of the group, nine years younger than Kate and often in her shadow. But this really is one of the B52s best songs in their amazing catalogue.
Oh my god. I had no idea Kate was the eldest one.
Which other songs could you recommend me?
@@tierraprometida8866 Private Idaho is good
@@tierraprometida8866 "Rock Lobster" (the shorter 4:54 version, instead of the album version,) "There's A Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon,") "6060-842," "Runnin' Around," "52 Girls." A bunch of songs from their first 2 albums are great, but none of their other material's the same, even when it's the 1981 - 1985 material from before Ricky's early death from AIDS.
Within the Band, she was not in Kate's shadow. Only to outsiders it might seem that way.
Best live concert I ever went to. 1982 Riverside Calif.
Everyone just danced from start to end. Then it continued on in the car park.
60% of the crowd seemed to be female, many dressed in Beehive wigs mini dresses etc. Awesome night.
I want a time machine...
Awesome story, this is my first time in life I have listented to them!!! I can imagine why!!! So they are solo groovy!!!
Cindy is just so gorgeous in this, what a wonderful vocal carrying such a great song.
Always liked the early days when she was brunette.
Saw them live in Seattle in the early 1980's. When they came out to the stage lights were low so those bouffant hairdos were impossible to miss. Cindy was so sexy singing "Give Me Back My Man" in her barefeet. Had a huge crush on her.
Yes, he looks great
As someone who loves music and all types of music, I have come to the conclusion that this is the coolest band that there ever was. Thank you B52s
I never liked them. Always hated "Love Shack" but for whatever reason I woke up this morning with that song in my head. Started looking on RUclips and found this song and "Private Idaho" and I finally get it.
This band is badass. I couldn't imagine hearing this back in 1980. It sounds nothing like anything that had been on the radio. It's a very unique sound. I didnt realize how talented they are
@@jimlthor A friend of mine bought this album when it first came out because Private Idaho was getting airplay on the Lexington Ky rock station. Its a great album and there is not a bad track on it. This album, which is their 2nd, and their first one are the best. I never cared for Love Shack and sadly that song is all some people know them for.
@@mousiespanks2379 haha.. Ive been going through their stuff this morning. Lots of good songs

So underrated. Tossed off like a Novelty Act. They defined 80's sound. Kate and Cindy two of best vocalists in Rock Herstory. And Ricky was an amazing artist and song writer.
Still not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Effing shame.
@@lisawilliams2013 the rock and roll hall of fame doesn't deserve them!!!
@Lisa Williams, absolutely love your name!!! It's a 'John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt' thing!!
You think they got it bad, look at devo.
I was fortunate to see DEVO live one time and I was blown away how talented they were!! So many wrote them off as a New Wave Novelty Act. They were AWESOME.
It´s about the desire to regain a lost love. The lyrics describe a woman who misses her partner and would do anything to be together again, even offering gifts like fish, candy and everything she has in her hand. The woman feels dizzy from the situation and feels that if she does not recover her man soon, she will drown in her pain. The song is a mixture of nostalgia, desire, and desperation to recover a lost lover. Good song. Love it.
You are an idiot. 30 seconds of research would find that Cindy herself has said this song was about a girl who's boyfriend was eaten by a shark and comes to the beach each day to bargain with the shark. Take your pretentious bullshit elsewhere.
They gave a free concert under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis in 2004. Fred did the frug all over the stage, Cindy and Kate shimmied in sync like mad, and Keith stood in the corner of the stage playing guitar like a tall cool daddy in black with shades on.
Priceless memory, indeed.
There's a level of emotion in many B52's songs that seems underappreciated
It's like trying to be depressed and lively at the same time.

Her hypnotic voice and the pure emotion of her cries at the end!
This is so wonderful!! ...
I thought I was the coolest kid in school when I "discovered" this amazing group in the mid-80s. Their sound, vibe & artistry still feels cool all these years later.
Oh my gosh -that little instrumental break when they stand still and Cindy slowly turns around and for awhile she’s just standing there looking at her brother, for a few moments. I’m wondering what she was thinking. I was so saddened when I heard he died, I know it must have broken her heart. I didn’t expect them to go on as a band after whammy. But I am so, so glad they did.

I think this showcases Cindy at her very best, and makes us all remember how great they all were...retro and ahead of their time all at once. And their music STILL sounds awesome, they've truly stood the test of time!
👏👏👏
I agree she sounds fantastic
The thing is that their music was considered Retro back in the 70s and 80s. It was inspired by rock/rockabilly music from the 50s.
Totally right they have definitely stood up to time
Well said!
I’ve grown to absolutely love this band. They sounded like no one before them and no one who’s come after them could match them. I’ve always lovingly referred to The B-52s as the musical equivalent to a John Waters film: kitschy, retro, and 9,000% one of a kind.
Brilliant comment x
Aptly put!
at over 60 years old, I've attended many, many live shows, and The B-52's with The Judy's at the WinterGarden in Dallas, Texas 1982, was about the most fun concert I've ever seen.

Geezus, were we ever that young? It still hits me now, like it did then. Thanks for all the music and memories....
Absolutely one of the most innovative bands that nobody has ever tried to duplicate, because they know it can't be done! 😆🙋👌👍👏👏👏
Lots of people have tried. Fetchin Bones, SCOTS, Voice of the Beehive... thats just a few.
Check ouf a Japanese band called The Plastics. Were doing this same thing from about 77 to 83. The Japanese claim they were BEFORE the B52s. But it is true that David Byrne, of the Talking Heads, and the b52s helped The Plastics release two US albums in 1980 and 81. If you like the B52s you'll like them too.
@@darkwitnesslxx The Plastics formed in 1976, as did The B-52s, so they started at about the same time. But I don't think their guitar parts sound anywhere near the same. I'm not saying they're "bad," I can listen just fine, but they sound more like XTC's "Drums and Wires" album.
The point is that guitar parts in B-52s songs are usually far more minimalist, while having hints of some unusual chords on one guitar - chords that try appearing like they're 2 different guitars instead of 1, even though 3 of their early songs from the first 2 albums had 2 guitars. And I say that as a fan of both early B-52s songs, and XTC.
Kinda interesting that all 3 bands had officially formed in 1976.
Cindy is just so cool... and pretty, too...
And for some reason unappreciated

How sad for Cindy, and all the band, when Ricky died. For Cindy, not only a bandmate, a big brother. If it wasn’t for finding this band as a 7 year old learning to sing like them, I would have never been exposed to opera. Because of their comfortability sense with themselves, I gained the courage to get voice lessons, along with learning other instruments. I owe this band my musical curiosity and extended vocal timed length in order to sing many arias confidently. Also, learning about space junk. Thank You B-52’s 💋💋💋
I LOVE this record SO much, it's absolutely Brilliant and Unique ♥️ I don't know if they really realise how brilliant they are .
Well unique, the music of this one is almost a sample of Hallogallo.
The best performance of all time IMO
This song has a very driving beat and Cindy's almost frantic pleading meshes perfectly with it. Love it.
The band is great, but Cindy is really rocking this one. Love it.
Fred is so friggin awesome in this song
he barely did anything
@@XenoGaming-ow2ks It's the performance, so awesome
So brilliantly retro, yet so ahead of their time. I don't know that I've ever swooned more over Cindy than now at my 57 years, she's mesmerizing, I can't take my eyes off of her.
I can’t get enough of this song and the charisma of the delivery.
Cindy is such a cutie! She can pass for Agent 99 in Get Smart. Love how Kate moves playing the synthesizer.
You pegged her for Agent 99 !! Never thought of that until now !! Dead ringer !
Cindy Wilson meets Barbara Feldon ?!? That would be a meeting of the minds!!!
She is a world class cutie! So is Kate. These two have so much talent that if they ever got too close to each other they would reach critical mass and cause an atomic explosion.
Wow, these B'52 performances never cease to deliver on originality and how well they have stood up over time!! The 1980's would not have been the same without them - don't miss an opportunity to see them live!!!
2:38 "Why do you listen to them? You're the total opposite of that music! It's silly...you're serious..." That's what my friend asked me. She was confused why they appealed me. We were both friends and both Goth, Sherri and I. I was the B-52s fan along with Bauhaus. Sherri just didn't understand so I replied, "enthusiasm, whatever they sing they mean it from their gut. Cindy and Kate are infectious. I want a girl that pines for me like Cindy pines for her man in this song. I would do anything for that." Then I played the song. While the song was playing Sherri aggressively kissed me and our friendship became a romance. Thanks Cindy.
She’s a frickn GODESS!
She reminds me of Susan Sarandon
Yes!!!! You beat me to it.
I prefer to think of her as an exceptionally talented and adorable musician.
@@Potandthekettle i can see it -
The B 52's are immortal.
Jason C Except the AIDS casualty drummer.
Captain Freedom You mean Ricky Wilson, the original guitarist for the band.
Gerardo Reyes Okay, guitarist. I knew his name but he’ll always be “Aidsy McAidsface” or “The Other Gay Guy In The B-52s” to me.
Captain Freedom Wow you are disgusting. Please grow up. You are talking about someone who's passed away.
Gerardo Reyes Just a prank bro. But seriously, Hitler is dead too, so joking about him is also off-limits?
13 years old when i first heard this. one of my fave songs ever. always absolutely loved cindy's voice - particularly on this record.
Its great to watch. Vocals perfect. Everything great. Cindy comes across here big time. I love it. My fav B'52 song.
Fred's cardio is AMAZING--dude's not even breathing hard after all that jumping and dancing. And his tambo is ON POINT.
Fred went to the Elwood Blues School of Dance
WOW! The B-52's were so cool in the early and mid 80s. This is undoubtedly one of the best New Wave songs ever.
Thank you for posting!
+Jerry X this looks mid 70s 2 me!
+Fernando Ramoa This song and album came out in 1980.
Fernando Ramoa the b52s got started in the late 70s so it reflects a lot of their style
Cool
Listen to that drum beat. Glorious.
I love how Cindy gives Fred a long look before she sparks up! She's like , this is really my song!? And Fred is totally committed to being Cindy's Tamborine player and backup dancer. Someway into the song Cindy gives a long loving look at her brother, Ricky.😂🤣😍
Disfunction. Carpenter family vibes.
Cindy is amazing! Her vocals give me the shivers. She belts out those lyrics perfectly!
I love that pout Cindy has on and how she breaks into dance.
The haunting surf guitar, rob just going with the flow,,and those beautiful vocals,,, brilliant
Cindy Wilson: one of the few human beings that understand what existEnce is all about.
👌
Plus she can spell existence. ;-)

Lo cierto es que a veces, al no ser mi lengua original, se filtran estas fallas de la matrix... 🙄
Cheers from Argentina 🇦🇷
You mean like "eXistenZ," the Cronenberg movie?
The unrelenting intensity is what floors me. I loved it when it came out (bought the vinyl), love it just as much now.
