EDIT: These ARE NOT P90 Pick ups in this guitar... I didnt do my usual amount of research and messed up that piece of info. thank you to those who pointed it out!
Jazzmaster pickups have magnetic pole pieces, like a Strat, but the wind is wide and shallow. These pickups, even though JM pickup shaped, have slug pole pieces that share a common bar magnet underneath. This is why these particular pickups are, for all intents and purposes, P90-style pickups. Also, that's why they have pole pieces with a flathead screw adjustment at the top for height, just like a P90 pickup.
They're not intended to be P-90s however they are actually of a much closer design in this particular guitar than they are to a common Jazzmaster pickup. Which is why I think they actually sound quite good.
I have this same guitar in burgundy mist, I ordered it on a whim, then regretted it, then decided it would be a good opportunity to learn how to mod a guitar. Then it came in and it was perfect, the only thing I did was change the string tree and put dome knobs on it. It sounds fantastic and plays great.
How much would you say it weighs? I got the FMT Strat but am tired of Strats want to do a trade for the Jazzmaster. Weight is a deal breaker for me, the Strat is really light.
My DIY Frankenstrat is made from a Squier Affinity body. Also, I have a Squier Affinity Tele. Both are excellent! The Affinity line gets far too much flak from gear snobs and cork sniffers who are too lazy/arrogant to lean a decent guitar setup procedure.
also there are too many people on yt who dont even know they have to change strings and stretch them, or that they have to lower the action to their liking because manufacturers will ship a bit high on purpose . i have seen so many videos of people bashing the mustang or the minis because they dont understand string tension neither
@@0000song0000 There are several RUclips channels (not naming names) which are secretly sponsored/bought-off by guitar companies. Squier has really upped their game recently but it kinda feels like a push for fender prices to go up. When I got serious, around 2004, you could get a MIM fender for $349..now is upwards of $600+...but my Squier classic 70s vibe tele deluxe in white was one of my favorite guitars. I had to part with it under less than ideal circumstances, but I would buy it again
yea man!! i think thats true.. but also inflation. you know?? everything is (or at least seems) more expensive, but i think the reality is that you can get SO MUCH MORE guitar now for $600 than you were ever able to (in terms of cheap brands)
@@williamsporing1500 well the quality on MIM Fenders are a little better than they used to be on the Standard, i had a Mexican Standard for awhile and it was nice for what it was, but the Player Series is a step above it. the Classic Vibe is equivalent to the old Standard, that wasn't always the case with Squier, but the modern Classic Vibe definitely are. the Affinity now is what the old Squier Standard used to be, and the Squier Bullet series is like what the older Affinity was and the Yamaha Pacifica 012, which has been around a long time. i bought the 012 back in 2011, that's how far back it goes. the Bullet Series just came out the following year in 2012, but for the longest the Affinity was the entry level, then it went Squier Standard and Deluxe at the top. Classic Vibe came around 2010, and the Bullet was the latest to complete the series.

Hahah thank you so much!! Typically fresh strings and adjusting the height of the action (a littler lower = easier to push). This is different on every guitar BUT usually that’s what I need to do. it should stay in tune well!
New bone of graph tech nut would be a good starting point. Then maybe tuners if you have problems and a good bridge after that. But check the neck, get rid of any sharp fret ends if it has any, and maybe pots.
This version is very bare bones It feels like it should have been part of the Bullet Series(Cheaper lineup) because for an Affinity vesion made in Indonesia you should get the original control layout and bridge and tremolo. Because with the standard point bridge and tremolo with single coil you're getting a stratocaster in the shape of a Jazzmaster.
P90,s or not. I have to get one. I,m a Country Player and Rockabilly stuff. Let ya know what happens. I,m not as good a player as you. But I,m retired and I have a lot of time pick and play.
Imo i think squiers and regualr original fenders are just the same but just a cheaper quantity from what ive seen they have the same tone just a bit cheaper parts
It's a nice, good sounding guitar but it's really not a Jazzmaster in anything but name and shape. Without the pickups, bridge+vibrato, or rhythm circuit, it doesn't really justify the name.
@walkerbetweenworld No, they aren't Jazzmaster pickups. They have ceramic magnets; they're built the way P90s are built. It really doesn't sound like a Jazzmaster and it's really not as close as you're going to get to sounding like one. Item by item, it possesses none of the features that give a Jazzmaster its sound. Mechanically speaking, it's basically a P90 Strat. I'm not faulting anyone for liking it, as it is a good sounding guitar--I'm merely stating that it's not a Jazzmaster.
@walkerbetweenworld I think your best bet would be to keep an eye out for a used Vintage Modified Squier Jazzmaster, which has become the Classic Vibe now. This is how I entered the Jazzmaster world. I got super lucky, finding mine for $100, which you probably won't duplicate but $200 you might actually do. Mine came with custom pickups so I can't speak to the stock ones but I think they're decently regarded. But it's more than the pickups. It's the silly bridge that you will probably learn to hate, it's the subtle action of the vibrato, which you'll also become annoyed by, since the arm tends to flop around unless you tweak it where it inserts. It's a whole package of ancient Fender tech. I really had no idea what the big deal was until I got one. I was disdainful of its quirks for a week or two but loved the sound from the get go. I put flats on mine and I'm stoked to the max every time I put this song on and realize my guitar sounds exactly the same: ruclips.net/video/23gWxazYQtU/видео.html As for you, though, there are plenty of great sounds to be had and you're clearly happy with the Affinity so maybe it's not worth it. It's just a different sound, not necessarily better. I'm into it because I love surf and it's one of the foundational classics.
@walkerbetweenworld My opinion is that Fender's motivation for creating this guitar was not the historic Jazzmaster but the newish G&L Doheny. G&L's MFD pickups are fairly similar to P90s and with the 2-point vibrato (which is a G&L original), the Squier is a pretty solid approximation of the Doheny. So to tie it all together: I think Fender named this thing a Jazzmaster only because they wanted to use the Jazzmaster body shape because that is the shape G&L used for their Doheny, which is their own take on the Jazzmaster, except that it's really not much like the Jazzmaster at all. I agree that the Squier is a keeper. This video and others have made me want one too!
@@dclipper8052 stay in your line you know nothing about electronics. The magnet material does not define the pickup type, the design does, this is a Jazz Master designed pickup.
@walkerbetweenworld don’t listen to him, he is ignorant. I am an electrical engineer, these are Jazz Master pickups. Pickup types are defined by design to by the magnetic core material.

Rock on 🤘
Squier has really upped their game recently but it kinda feels like a push for fender prices to go up.
@@jimmyfranklinI completely agree
Yea, I’m stunned at how much MIM strats are going for now!
@@williamsporing1500 well the quality on MIM Fenders are a little better than they used to be on the Standard, i had a Mexican Standard for awhile and it was nice for what it was, but the Player Series is a step above it.
the Classic Vibe is equivalent to the old Standard, that wasn't always the case with Squier, but the modern Classic Vibe definitely are.
the Affinity now is what the old Squier Standard used to be, and the Squier Bullet series is like what the older Affinity was and the Yamaha Pacifica 012, which has been around a long time. i bought the 012 back in 2011, that's how far back it goes. the Bullet Series just came out the following year in 2012,
but for the longest the Affinity was the entry level, then it went Squier Standard and Deluxe at the top. Classic Vibe came around 2010, and the Bullet was the latest to complete the series.
@@Jeymez I’ve got a MIM I bought at a pawn shop for I think $250 about 6 years ago. Leveled the frets, set it up, put locking tuners on it and it’s great!!
I’m getting this guitar for more pop punk stuff, and I love the way it looks. Nice review! Definitely made me want it now.
I've been considering a Squier Affinity Jazzmaster over a Stratocaster.
absolutely
I had no idea these were available. I might just have to check one of these out!
There’s a link in the description! If you use the links in my videos it’s no extra cost and it helps support the channel!
I think the Indian Laurel looks way better than the Pau Ferro fretboards. I wish they had the Indian Laurel on the MIM Fenders.
great Summertime Blues
It do not matter. You make that Guitar sound great. Fender should pay ya for making there Guitar sound so great.
Great playing and clean sweeping! Looks like a good guitar to try for the price.
A bit off topic, but was curious as to which Kiesel did you end up keeping?
I picked up the Burgandy Mist for $150 at a pawn shop.
Great review. Only thing I wish is if a bit of time was spent on low and mid gain tones. I thought at the end it was going to happen but it went from surf/clean tele sound straight to metal, lol. thanks again.
Well I did order one from Sweetwater. I can not wait for it and it only coast 270,00 dollers.
did you receive it yet?? how do you like it?!?
@@jimmyfranklin Not yet. Will let Ya Know. Thanks.
I got it and sweetwater did me right again. Plays like a dream. Better than a strat. Plays Country and Rockabilly great. I got the same color as yours. Great minds think a like. Have fun.
Only two hundred and seventy thousand dollars?
im fairly new to playing guitar and this guitar looks like a good starting point for what im looking to play (hipster indie dream pop or whatever you said LMAO) so i ordered one. but i guess i wanted to ask what should i do once i get the guitar as far as getting it all set up goes? can anything be done about the tuning? im sure theres some tricks out there to get it in tip top shape i just dont know what thay entails! great review!
*Are stock pickups noisy, generating lot of hum?*
How does this compare to the Harley Benton knock-off?
Anyone know if this would be good for grunge? I looked it up and it said that the Jazzmaster was a good choice this true?
Your so cool and ya can play. You have FUN.
Well it is here and it plays great. I do not play as good as you do. Iplay alot of country stuff. They should call this guitar the Country Jazzmaster.

What song is this? Please help :(
It's Summer time blues from Brian Setzer, thanks to myself
HAHA! yes it is.. absolutely great version of that tune!
Are those really P90 pickups?
Is the middle position hum cancelling?
This version is very bare bones
It feels like it should have been part of the Bullet Series(Cheaper lineup) because for an Affinity vesion made in Indonesia you should get the original control layout and bridge and tremolo.
Because with the standard point bridge and tremolo with single coil you're getting a stratocaster in the shape of a Jazzmaster.
Is the trem arm screw in?
I wish it came in an olympic white finish. I think I’m going to get an offset tele instead.
did those come with 9 gauge
You have got some chops man 👏👏👏.. who (apart from you) are the key dudes to learn this style from...(is it rockabilly et al??)
Does it handle crunch well?
Very well yes!
@@jimmyfranklin Thanks. I was debating on getting this or an Epiphone SG for my next guitar
I always keep a bag of 1/4" jacks on hand for just such a situation. ;)
Need this to play smells like teen spirit
P90,s or not. I have to get one. I,m a Country Player and Rockabilly stuff. Let ya know what happens. I,m not as good a player as you. But I,m retired and I have a lot of time pick and play.
Nice review but is called an “OUTPUT” jack .
Imo i think squiers and regualr original fenders are just the same but just a cheaper quantity from what ive seen they have the same tone just a bit cheaper parts
Omg what the title of first music ? Like pulp fiction dick Dale stuff
Looks like Kurt’s guitar so I must buy
279.99 US dollars
I WANT ONE!
P90?
Must be good he does guitar faces
I put flats on mine and I'm stoked to the max every time I put this song on and realize my guitar sounds exactly the same: ruclips.net/video/23gWxazYQtU/видео.html
As for you, though, there are plenty of great sounds to be had and you're clearly happy with the Affinity so maybe it's not worth it.
U keep talking up “real p90s” but jazzmaster pickups are different than p90s, the fact these come with p90s is a bad thing and not true to the original
I know. I pinned a comment of mine at the top were I corrected that! Mistake on my part!
I got a Classic Vibes. It walks all over it.
Hellow You have a very cool energy and seems like a really cool dude !
BUTTTT I almost disliked because of that intro jibirish xD
Glad I skipped tough :) :)
thanks for the review !
But can you metal?
It looks like a car
Looks great.. No offense but the tunes you were playing kinda transported me back to the early sixties… In that I never intend to play that genre of music, I would have preferred something more relevant to today….. Inasmuch as those are strictly Jazzmaster single coils - not P90’s..I honestly have no idea of what this guitar can sound like playing either rock or blues.
Soapbar
made in where? china?
Sounds like what it is, plastic.
