@@sunnyhaair Good to hear the mod videos are coming as I'm about the pull the trigger on this burgundy mist JM! Brilliant Review. I ordered it yesterday. For me the most interesting part are the pickups. They are not the jazzmaster PUs squier put in their other jazzmasters. This ones are P90 because of the adjustable poolpieces like in the Squier J.Mascis Jazzmaster. Would be delightful if they used them in this model.
Thank you! Congratulations on the order - I think you’ll like it. It’s a really fun guitar. Yeah I was curious about how the P90s would sound, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they’re not too distant to after Jazzmaster pickups at least (mainly the stuff from GFS). Still though, I bought the PV 65 pickups to see how they stack up in an A/B comparison. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Congrats! I am ordering one as well... Mind that there are much better aftermarket options for this (P90 in a Jazzmaster frame) than the J.Mascis model pups. Check out Curtis Novak. The stock pickups sound pretty good though! I probably won't upgrade mine anytime soon.

Just subscribed. Mainly because your findings on this piece lined up with mine with one exception. The exception was that my action as arrived was pretty much what you set yours to. I think the reason is that my Jazzmaster was a gift from someone who purchased it from Amazon rather than Sweetwater, who I normally use. I was quite horrified to find out that it was shipped only in the same interior box as yours. Still, it too arrived safe and sound. Never owned a Jazzmaster before, so, I'm sticking with the regular (they are a new Shaw design - from what I could find out) and I like them quite a bit. We'll see how it goes... Nice review! Best, Pete.
Hey Pete! Thanks for subscribing! And for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts & experience. Glad to hear yours arrived without needing any adjustments! As for the pickups- they’re not bad at all! Definitely very capable, just not my cup of tea. But I left them in mine for a while and grew to appreciate them. I think my biggest issue is the output is a little too much for my liking. Thanks again and congratulations on your Jazzmaster! I’m playing mine as I type this.
@@sunnyhaair Sometimes you just get lucky.... I've had to give a neck tweak to a Gibson Custom Shop before now. The sound of these Jazzmaster's is certainly unique, different in a refreshing way!
Generally, I'm kind of indifferent to guitar stuff, to me a guitar is just an instrument that I want to sound good in my music and that's it, but for some reason this particular model with this color is the first one that I somewhat like just for how it looks alone. The sounds it's producing seem to be nice as well. I'm planning to buy it myself and hope that its build quality is good, and it won't need a guitar tech to fix the frets or something else after several months of use.
It’s definitely an eye-catching guitar. For whatever it’s worth, I’ve got an Affinity Starcaster I played daily for a year, tossed in the car during 90+ degree heat, played outside during an icestorm, etc. and it has no fret issues. In my experience, Squiers may have an electronics issue now and then (2 out of 4 times for me. Once with bad pots, once with an output jack that wasn’t screwed in), but I’ve never encountered a build quality issue that affects playability. I actually think they’re very impressive. Thanks for watching!
🫡 Thank you for the encouraging words! I’m getting a little faster at posting these videos now, so I hope you’ll stick around for more. As for the Jazzmaster - a year and a half since buying mine and I’m happier than ever with it. I play it more than my TVL Jazzmaster. Very nice and simple review, thank you. I tried one when my local music store got one in, but the setup left me cold. Still, I'm interested in this new JM, and I'd like to add a Indian Laurel board into my mix but I do not need a fourth Strat. Looks like you've swayed me to the new JM! Thanks.
I'm happy to hear I played a part in your decision! Let me know how you like it once you've got it setup to your preferences. The out of box setup is always a little tough to look past, but I try to remind myself to overlook it cause sometimes it's hard to remember that underneath a bad setup could be a great guitar. Of course, you never know if the issue with the setup is because of a guitar's inability to be set up properly until you own it. I recently got a Gretsch that had a bad setup I figured I'd take care of... only to find out the truss rod dislodged in the neck and didn't work. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
From my understanding, gently sanding the nut slots so they are smooth followed by a little pencil lead should help with tuning stability when using the trem (the idea being that the nut might be catching the string)
You’re right! I did a little sanding of the slots when changing string gauges, added a little pencil lead, and haven’t had any problems since. Thanks for watching!
My son loves his Burgundy Mist JM. Looking forward to you subbing in the '65 JM pickups and subscribed. I love how those sound. Wondering if you'll check out the electronics and upgrade those as well, as I haven't looked "under the hood" on his guitar yet and wondered about the electronics. I have a 2019 Affinity JM HH, and the pots on those feel like they have deep range. I don't think anything was modded on those, but I might switch out those humbuckers because I am not as fond of them as I was when I picked that guitar up.
Glad to hear your son loves his JM! It’s a very fun guitar. It’s been my couch guitar cause it’s so comfortable. I do still have the 65 pickups on standby and I actually bought new 1 MEG pots too! Unfortunately since last summer I’ve been caught up in some business & personal matters so I haven’t had a chance to setup and film the swap/comparison. I don’t wanna jinx it, but hopefully you’ll see more videos posted with this guitar soon. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
I love mine but I was still up in the air until I did some work on it. The stock strings were crust. During the change I polished the frets and cleaned up, seemed pretty dirty. With new 10 gauge strings I had to significantly adjust the intonation, no big deal. Adjusted the trem claw and very slightly and adjusted the height. The trem works really well, better than my vintage style US and mij strats. The pickups sound good, but they are way too hot. In my deluxe reverb they are good, but on my mustang 3 they are way hot and have adjust everything way down. I too plan to buy a set of PV pickups, the guitar is worth it.
Yeah I agree with your assessment of the pickups. It’s not really that they sound bad, they’re just way too hot and have virtually no dynamics for me. Glad you came around to it after you did some work on it. I can’t remember if I said here or in the Tele Deluxe video, but I never hold a setup against a guitar because there’s no telling who’s responsible (or irresponsible). Could be the manufacturer, the distributor, the individual retailers tech, etc. Thanks for watching!
I bought this guitar a few days ago and I am pleasantly surprised by the build quality and sound. Little money, but excellent sound, and me, who is an amateur. And I like the body shape and appearance the most. The only thing I'm not really satisfied with is the tremolo system, but that's not important for the overall rating because even such a tremolo works satisfactorily well
Awesome! Glad to hear you’re liking it. NYXL strings and some Music Nomad Tune-It on the saddles and nut slots make the trem much more stable in my experience. Not perfect by any means, but stable enough for a song or two at least.
Hey Bryon good to hear from you! These modern Squiers are definitely guitars you don’t wanna put down. I checked out some videos on that Toronado you mentioned and it seems awesome. I must’ve overlooked it when it was re-released cause I had no clue. I tried tracking one down but couldn’t find a new one :( That new Affinity Tele Deluxe seems pretty close though. It doesn’t have the Atomic humbuckers but it’s got some ceramics. I’ll have to see if I can track on of those down in Burgundy Mist to match this one. Thanks again for watching man!
@@sunnyhaair those Tele deluxes are pretty nice, the pickups actually sound great for the price. Nice and crispy in the bridge for distortion, beautiful full cleans in the middle.
Got mine. It arrived damaged (snapped toggle switch). I'm finding the pickups much hotter than I would like. Have lowered them almost to pickguard level, but to little avail. Aside from that, a nice looking, good playing guitar. Will be killer once she gets some chubbier strings and new pickups.
Sorry to hear about the snapped toggle :( That’s terrible. Did it snap under the foam thing? I didn’t measure the pickups but now I gotta find out how they stack up against the replacements. What kind of pickups are you planning to put in?
I did! Changed the pots too. I’ve got a video update coming soon that highlights it. Right after one on the new Paranormal Nashville Custom Strat. Unfortunately I lost my A/B footage so I’ll just have to reference this video for people who want to hear the original pickups. Spoiler - I sold my Fender TVL Jazzmaster after putting the PV65s in this Squier.
I orderd mine today, I'm excited. I'm on a budget and I've always wanted a Jazzmaster. Now I just have a Bullet Mustang. And I want something with single coils and I think this guitar is perferct
Congrats! The Bullet Mustangs seem really interesting. How are you liking yours? I’m interested in knowing how it compares to the Jazzmaster 🤔 Thanks for watching!
@@sunnyhaair the Mustangs are really good for the price. I play through a Mustang lt25 and it sounds good. The bridge pickup is a bit bright for my taste but overall (knowing the price) you can't go wrong with that one
Thank you for this review! I am looking to buy my first guitar and was originally looking for something on the 100-200 euro range but since I plan on making shoegaze music, I think a Jazzmaster would be good for that (although the lack of tuning stability when using the trem is a bummer). Do you recommend getting this one for a complete beginner planning to make shoegaze music or are there any cheaper alternatives?
Thank YOU for watching! I would say for a complete beginner it's important, first & foremost, to get the guitar that inspires you to play. If you're a shoegaze fan I can definitely see why that could be a Jazzmaster, so I think you'd be really happy with this. Someone on an external site asked if I think this would be a good guitar for a beginner and my words were: :"I wish I would've had this guitar when I started playing" because it's the perfect midpoint for learning from a comfort level. The body is super contoured to dig into when you're practicing sitting or standing. The neck isn't too skinny or thick. The fretboard isn't too flat or round. The electronics are capable of doing anything you want them to. It's just an all around great guitar and very easy to maintain. Even that issue I had with the trem isn't an exact scientific outcome - those strings were very thin and detuned. Had they been thicker, or in standard tuning for my trem playing, I think they'd have stayed in tune a bit better. As for cheaper alternatives, I know Squier's Bullet line is really popular and so is Guitar Fetish's Xavier range. The Xavier brand even has a Jazzmaster type guitar, but I've never played it so I can't recommend it. This Jazzmaster is $40 more, but with 15 years and 50+ guitars behind me I can assure you that it's worth every penny. Good luck on your upcoming leap to guitar - it's led me to the greatest joys of my life. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!
Those pickups sounds and looks like the ones on the J.mascis due to the pole pieces that stands out instead of being flat like the standard JMs. on the good side, squier has been killing it on the new affinity lineup which is either a hit or miss for some people. Hows the neck profile and the fret profile? seems like i'm interested in grabbing one for my JM collection for its price. Nice vid and review on the guitar!👍👍
I haven't used the J. Mascis Jazzmaster so I can't speak to a comparison between the two, but the neck profile on here is a modern C, which is basically as thin as a C could be before it becomes a D shape. The frets are on the larger side, I think they're medium jumbo, or whatever that fret profile that's tall but not too wide is called. Thank you for watching!
Yeah I planned to change them originally and even bought some Fender Jazzmaster pickups but I played them thru a dual rectifier and they sound really good through it!
Is it just me or is that bridge pickup quite dark sounding? I feel like the reused the regular HH affinity pick guards that were loaded with wrong value pots (500k VS 250K).
It is a little subdued in the high end instead of being muddy, so I guess it possibly had 250k pots in there - especially if they've already got pre-wired pickguards for that. I'll find out once I go in to swap the electronics. Thanks for watching!
I pulled mine apart when I got it. Does indeed have 250k pots, and a .22 cap. Unlikely the reused the pickguards, however - the HH Jazzmaster doesn't have a vibrato bridge, so is shaped differently.
Oh that’s interesting but makes sense with them being P90s. I wonder what moving up to 500k or 1 Meg pots with the stock pickups would do… might be a better upgrade than the pickups. Cause I like the pickups, they’re just missing that little “something.” I ordered 1 Meg pots to go with the PV65s so I might just swap out the pots first to hear what kind of difference that makes.
I had the default input gate on the HX Stomp with the threshold at -48db, but nothing aggressive like a gate behind the amp. These pickups are really quiet. Not noiseless, but they handle gain very well and I probably could’ve got away without the gate. Thanks for watching!
Hey Oscar. As you know the guitar players of Interpol play a Gibson Les Paul and a Epiphone Casino. If you want to catch the sound maybe this is the right choice. On the other hand you can use any electric guitar for any style.
Excellent demo and review. I actually like the pickups in this thing. Jazzmaster vibe but with some p90 character. If I got this I’d legit only add a dark brown tortoise shell pickguard on there and maybe some musicLilly locking tuners.
I was actually thinking about putting a tortoise pickguard on it cause I really like the Penny finish American Performer Jazzmaster! Decided against it so it can continue to match my Tele Deluxe. Thanks for watching!
Sunny, I'm curious as to your thoughts on the Affinity Jazzmaster now that it's a year in. Still have it? Still like it? Any problems with it over time? Thanks in advance.
Hey John, sorry for the late response. I still have and still like it! It hasn’t had as much play time as my Tele Deluxe over the last year but I’m still very happy with it. I’d like to revisit it in a video since it’s been a year, but I’ve been dealing with some personal issues. I’m hoping and praying everything works out well though and then I’ll get right to a video update for it. Thanks for watching!
Awesome! I think you'll have luck finding one, there's a few on Reverb so they're not too hard to track down. Thanks a lot for watching! P.S. Can't pick up a Jazzmaster without playing Portishead, right? Glad you caught it!
I haven’t checked on that yet because I’m working on the TVL comparison video before changing the pickups, but I hope it’s possible! I’ve got some 1 Meg pots on standby so it would be a fun mod. I’ll let you know what I find. Thanks for your interest!
@@jayrobb9 i guess you can rout the body and pickguard. The day i was ordering one, they announced new finishes for the paranormal series and im getting that butterscotch offset tele rather that this guitar. Still looks hella nice

Oh first guitar - exciting! When are you planning to make your decision by? I could try to find one, but I’m not sure what kind of time that would take.
@@bastianchavezalavez6483 I'll let you know if I'm able to do that in about a month. I use Zzounds, and they're out of stock. For whatever it's worth though, I've got a couple of the Jackson Minion guitars (a Dinky and a Rhodes) and I love them. Build quality is excellent and the necks are super comfortable. Electronics weren't great though. I replaces the pickups and pots on both. What kind of music are you looking to play?
They're not noiseless, but these are considerably quieter than single coils I've had in strat style guitars. Granted, I'm using Helix, so it's noisefloor is lower than a traditional amp. Thanks for watching!
I think it could work very well for that. Certainly better than the TVL Jazzmaster I was asked about. Chordal stuff would be a breeze for sure, but for most tapping would be easier on something with a 12” + radius. But then at that point the chords wouldn’t be as easy. I personally thing tapping on a 9.5” radius would be better than chords on a 12” radius.
@@sunnyhaair Overall feel and ease of movement across the necks, weight difference of the two instruments, thoughts on the quality of the bridges and whether or not you'd change anything about them. Opinions, if any, on the volume/tone pot quality of each guitar. A Squier Affinity to a Signature MIM Fender with American parts is a bit of a jump in cost, so maybe also comment on which instrument you think offered you more bang for your buck. Otherwise, I'm sure the sound will speak for itself. I've already purchased the TVL and I'm sure it won't disappoint when it arrives, but if I end up preferring the simplicity and sound of my Telecaster over it, then it might end up being worthwhile selling the TVL and just getting a Squier to mod. Though, I reckon I'll probably keep it. Cheers for the reply, and solid reviews. Subscribed.

I feel the same, just looking at this for if I should save up for a Squire or a Fender in the future, since Squire's have a stigma for being "cheap".
by far the best style of guitar review. thanks for this im looking into one of these
🫡 Thank you for the encouraging words! I’m getting a little faster at posting these videos now, so I hope you’ll stick around for more.
As for the Jazzmaster - a year and a half since buying mine and I’m happier than ever with it. I play it more than my TVL Jazzmaster.
If you do decide to buy one, I’m gonna leave my zZounds affiliate link just in case you’d like to use it and help me out: www.zzounds.com/a--3971719/item--SQU0378300
And similarly making sure the saddle slots are nice and smooth
You’re right! I did a little sanding of the slots when changing string gauges, added a little pencil lead, and haven’t had any problems since. Thanks for watching!
@@sunnyhaair right on! Love when a little maintenance saves the day!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
reminds me a lot of 5 watt world
I love mine but I was still up in the air until I did some work on it.
Dude.....
I love the way you make your videos.
🎵🎵❤️❤️🎸🎸🙂
Thank you Willis for taking the time to watch and let me know you enjoyed the videos! Hopefully you'll like future videos as well.
Hey Sunny, if you like the sound of the Jazzmaster give the Toranado a look, I think it's my new daily player, love the sound from it. Great vid Fam !
Hey Bryon good to hear from you! These modern Squiers are definitely guitars you don’t wanna put down.
I checked out some videos on that Toronado you mentioned and it seems awesome. I must’ve overlooked it when it was re-released cause I had no clue. I tried tracking one down but couldn’t find a new one :(
That new Affinity Tele Deluxe seems pretty close though.
@@19guitarshredder Yeah I love those Tele Deluxe pickups! Definitely the best stock pickups I've ever come across.
Got mine. It arrived damaged (snapped toggle switch). I'm finding the pickups much hotter than I would like. Have lowered them almost to pickguard level, but to little avail. Aside from that, a nice looking, good playing guitar. Will be killer once she gets some chubbier strings and new pickups.
Sorry to hear about the snapped toggle :(
That’s terrible. Did it snap under the foam thing?
I didn’t measure the pickups but now I gotta find out how they stack up against the replacements.
What kind of pickups are you planning to put in?
Did you ever end up putting the Jazzmaster Pure Vintage pickups in your Squier?
I’m interested in knowing how it compares to the Jazzmaster 🤔
Thanks for watching!
Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!
what did you play at like 2:50?? need to learn this so pretty
Hey Noah thanks! I’ll get a video up on it for you soon 🫡
I just ordred this guitar from Thomann to Finland. Long time to wait…
M
Congratulations! It’s worth the wait. Thanks for watching!
The pickups are very hot and sound a lot fuller than a classic vibe. great tone nice guitar.
Cause I like the pickups, they’re just missing that little “something.”
I ordered 1 Meg pots to go with the PV65s so I might just swap out the pots first to hear what kind of difference that makes.
@@sunnyhaair higher value pots would brighten the guitar. I'm looking to go darker :)

The burgundy affinity sounds much more brightly.
I love your review style. Great job
Thanks Benjamin I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Do you have a gate on with the high gain setup? I figured the single coils would be a lot louder between notes.
I had the default input gate on the HX Stomp with the threshold at -48db, but nothing aggressive like a gate behind the amp. These pickups are really quiet. Not noiseless, but they handle gain very well and I probably could’ve got away without the gate.
Thanks for watching!
The string height is measured from the bottom of the string to the top of the fret. Looked like you measured from the top of the string.
Do you like slint? Your playing reminds me of spiderland
Can’t say I’ve heard Slint but I’ll check out Spiderland soon! Love that title. Thanks for watching and the suggestion!
@@sunnyhaair of course, man. Love your videos.
I love to play interpol and other indie bands, does this guitar will play well those styles?
Absolutely!
Do you recommend this guitar man??
I do!
@@sunnyhaair No problem Sunny, I hope everything works out well for you. Thanks for the reply.
on the back of my Squier i dont have that box kind of thing on the lower back of my guitar so i dont know how to change my strings. what should i do?
Hi, can I ask what model you have? And if possible can you direct me to a picture?
which better? bacchus bjm or squier affinity jazzmaster?
I’m not familiar with the Bacchus, but it does seem to be almost triple the cost 😯 It must have some premium features
Thanks so much for the demo, I hope to score mine tonight! And thanks for throwing a bit of Portishead into your playing ;)
Awesome! I think you'll have luck finding one, there's a few on Reverb so they're not too hard to track down.
Thanks a lot for watching!
P.S. Can't pick up a Jazzmaster without playing Portishead, right? Glad you caught it!
Have you checked the routing on the body? Is it possible to add the rhythm circuit?
I haven’t checked on that yet because I’m working on the TVL comparison video before changing the pickups, but I hope it’s possible! I’ve got some 1 Meg pots on standby so it would be a fun mod.
I’ll let you know what I find.
Thanks for your interest!
Not possible to add the rhythm circuit. Sadly.
@@jayrobb9 i guess you can rout the body and pickguard. The day i was ordering one, they announced new finishes for the paranormal series and im getting that butterscotch offset tele rather that this guitar. Still looks hella nice

How can I find this guitar? Whats the exactly name?
Thank you so much for the review!!
Unfortunately it’s not listed on Fender’s site yet, but it’s listed with some retailers online (Sweetwater, Adorama, and the place I got mine - RoxyMusic.com). It’s model name is “Squier Affinity Series Jazzmaster”! There’s a similar model, but it’s name is “Squier Affinity Series Jazzmaster HH.” If you search “Squier Affinity Jazzmaster Burgundy Mist” it should help. Hope you’re able to find one!

Can you make a demo of the Jackson Js 22 Dinky? It would be really helpful, I'm looking for my first guitar and I'm between the Jackson and this Jazzmaster
Oh first guitar - exciting! When are you planning to make your decision by?
I could try to find one, but I’m not sure what kind of time that would take.
@@sunnyhaair In two or three months
@@bastianchavezalavez6483 I'll let you know if I'm able to do that in about a month. I use Zzounds, and they're out of stock. For whatever it's worth though, I've got a couple of the Jackson Minion guitars (a Dinky and a Rhodes) and I love them. Build quality is excellent and the necks are super comfortable. Electronics weren't great though. I replaces the pickups and pots on both. What kind of music are you looking to play?
@@sunnyhaair Thanks. I'm looking for something to play from metal and punk to funk and Soul
Got my hands on a JS22! Let me know what you’d like to know between the two and I’ll try to have the video up for you within the month.
*Are they noisy, generating lot of hum?*
They're not noiseless, but these are considerably quieter than single coils I've had in strat style guitars. Granted, I'm using Helix, so it's noisefloor is lower than a traditional amp.
Thanks for watching!
is this guitar good for math rock and midwest emo ?
I think it could work very well for that. Certainly better than the TVL Jazzmaster I was asked about.
Chordal stuff would be a breeze for sure, but for most tapping would be easier on something with a 12” + radius. But then at that point the chords wouldn’t be as easy. I personally thing tapping on a 9.5” radius would be better than chords on a 12” radius.
Emo and Jojo fans 🤨
Looking forward to the comparison with the TVL.
Let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like me to cover. Thanks for watching!
Subscribed.
@@chronic_johnson_a.r.a.b I'll be happy to cover all that for ya! I've never owned an actual (read: single coil) Tele, but I think your TVL will hang with it well :)

should i get this or the affinity telecaster deluxe? which one would you say sounds warmer
This Jazzmaster is definitely the warmer of the two!
Just found this video after buying this guitar online, it will be here in two days. Sounds great. Although you didn't play the middle position with clean amp much. Curious how it sounds!
Congratulations! Sorry I didn’t include more of the middle in the edit. But the silver lining is that when you get yours the middle position sounds will be a new experience for your ears! It’s a great position. Really focused and “stratty”. Thanks for watching!
@@sunnyhaair Thanks bro, it's totally okay. I'm gonna check it at home and will love it.
is the body thick enough for traditional Jazzmaster tremolo routing?
I’m pretty sure it’s the same thickness as my TVL Jazzmasters but I’ll have to check back in the morning
I don’t have calipers, but I eyeballed it and used a ruler - the Affinity JM is about .5 cm thinner than my TVL Jazzmaster.

I know I’m being a little shallow, but I’m not loving the color choices of this year’s Affinity models.
Understandable. Burgundy Mist is polarizing but I love it. I do think it’s strange they went with the black pickguard on the Lake Placid Blue finish though.
I never use neck PUP's on any guitar as I find them too muddy but this guitar they sound OK? The OD/Dist you were using sounded harsh and simply bad and have no place in the real world.
