If you like this kind of bass playing and are not against a more metal sound, I would advise you to check out a band called "Talisman", with the late - and great - Marcel Jacob on bass... ... and maybe it's also a bit too close to that from "Rapper's Delight", don't you think so?!
I used to play this as a dj when it came out. Bass line is just brilliant...why does nobody ever seem to recognise it? Great song that just sums up the time.

And rappers delight not only the bass but the melody for the first part, not saying its not cool with an English guy just not as original as what is seemed
The Captain was guitarist for the Damned, back in the early days of punk. He pre-dated ska, and he developed the over-the-top personality. There's great stuff on RUclips of him playing Jet Boy Jet Girl, etc., with whatever was left of the Damned at that time.
Good old Captain Sensible, never a bloke to take himself too seriously. From master pieces like "Neat Neat Neat" and "Damned Damned Damned" to the pop of "Happy Talk" and "Wot" before returning to Smash It Up with The Damned all over again. Top geezer and a superb musician.
Captain has to be one of the best guitarists to come out of the UK, some of the stuff he plays live with The Damned over the past few years is mindblowing.
Tracks like this is why I evolved onto punk/alternative and out of metal as a teenager. It wasnt trapped in on sound and one way of thinking, it was constantly evolving. The anyone can play and there are truly no rules. Its why bands like The Clash, The Jam/Style Council, PIL, Damned, Siouxsie and The Banshees etc made such great and lasting music
Ah. The Dolly Mixtures. I saw The Damned once, Studio 80/Rosie O’Grady’s in Great Yarmouth ( and it WAS great, then) circa 1980. The Captain was a gent. A Rothman’s smoker as I recall, with a vodka and lime.... or two. Happy days
Watching this out of the blue in the jaded 2022 music biz makes me realise that watching TOTP as a 13 year old and seeing this isn’t just about nostalgia. It’s about performances where the artists could take the p**s out of themselves, have a good laugh on stage - and have CHARISMA! Love it.
Sensible hated Adam Ant because he dissed anarchists in Ant Rap the year before. Ant Rap got to number 3, this didn't even make top 20, the studio looks sparse of kids in this one as if the BBC had trouble finding enough fans to fill it out.

Takes me back to a time when music could be fun as well as funky! What a melody! This tune's going on the mixtape!
Bass line : masterpiece

Yes bit like rappers delight 👍😊

Dammmnnn right!
One of the best Punk Funk tracks EVER!!!! Bass Line genius * How I love Mr Sensible and his signature Red Beret
I used to play this as a dj when it came out. Bass line is just brilliant...why does nobody ever seem to recognise it? Great song that just sums up the time.
Love this song!
Moi j'avais 15 ans , au lycée on écoutait ce super titre , ça a marqué ma jeunesse ...!!! 👍👍👍
Yo tenía 16 años
Em 1982 eu também tinha 15 anos
3 girls prentending to play the same keyboard! Brilliant entertainment never to be seen again
ahahah
that's Dolly Mixture, they were an amazing band in their own right.
phantomrider78 wow I think you're right that name is very familiar. Thanks!
Check out Debseys band Birdie, class!
Lol
First time I heard this song ever since 1982
Wonder if anyone listens to this song as regularly as I do, lol. Thank you Legion for showing me this song
I wish today's mainstream music would sound like this. This is so much better than 95% of all songs released between 2000 and 2023.
I bet Bernard Edwards smiled when he heard this. It isn't a ripoff, it's an ode.
it reminds me of the early teen's parties we had in my home town, wednesday or saturday afternoons...WONDERFUL MOMENTS

J'ai la nostalgie d'une époque que j'ai pas connu, j'ai 30 ans
I am, and will always be, a fan of the Captain.
Top marks for prancing around !!
That bass line is sick.
Obviously inspired by Bernard Edwards/Chic's line for, "Good Times."
I'll shoot it
@@pjmuck Nothing like it

2024 anybody?!!! So British! I love it still! 🤩⭐️💪🏼💯 I lived 70s/ 80s NEVER DIE !!!!🎉
The good olde days, funny and entertaining
+Jake Roberts Nope...he was a punk/rocker a few years before this, then when the punk music in Uk were dead, he starts to joke around....
The Captain was guitarist for the Damned, back in the early days of punk. He pre-dated ska, and he developed the over-the-top personality. There's great stuff on RUclips of him playing Jet Boy Jet Girl, etc., with whatever was left of the Damned at that time.
He still is. The Damned are still together and this year celebrated their 40th year anniversary.
Yes, correcting myself...he predates the two-tone ska that took hold in Britain around that time.
I think we Europeans had to be entertained in the70s 80s 90s with the intention to be in such a mess now.
I was a little child and i remember it so well..
Track of my youth, excellent! When Pop music was great and fun to listen to!
Three great things about this tune
1. The Captain
2. Dolly Mixture
3. Tony Mansfield's production
And A#1 is his pink furry trousers 😀
4. Bernard Edwards
This is actually seriously funky - that is a great bass player.
It's Sensible on bass I think
Astonishing in so many ways...I remember seeing this on TOTP.
Great!!!!!!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩 and super line Bass

I strongly concur..!!
An incredibly clever and well put together recording. I miss those long, hot, boring, exciting, strange early 1980s UK summer school holidays!
Great song!! 👍👍👍👍
pezzo indimenticabile.....................Grazie.
MASTERPIECE, más de 30 años y parece actual!.. Esto era música 💙
Incredible that this fella has recorded some of post-punk's hardest anthems
captain is still with the damned and they are still going strong
I just read that in Wiki. I had no idea. I thought they were long gone.
no they are going
Captain has to be one of the best guitarists to come out of the UK, some of the stuff he plays live with The Damned over the past few years is mindblowing.
Possibly one of the greatest records ever made (provided that Mr Bernard Edwards gets the credit he deserves)
Tony Mansfield on guitar....sheer genius
Well-spotted, I hadn't noticed him. The guitar on this is very Nile Rodgers. Did Tony produce this?
@@ajs41 I'm sure he did
@El Rincon del cine 79 Interesting. I wouldn't have guessed there was any Fairlight on this record.
This is a reworked version of Rapper's Delight. Idk if someone here already noted that. I love it anyway
That's what I said. Why is no one else noticing??
When asked, "Captain?"
He said, "Wot?"
that's a decent summary

What a cool night out this must have been. You could really go out and have fun in those days
Love you, Captain!!
The 3 girls playing the Roland at once is what really makes it everything
I always loved the Adam Ant line in this song.
