Freestyle!!! This was house party and club music in the 80’s 🎼 Every weekend there was probably HUNDREDS of house parties in SoCal. Every Friday we’d collect party flyers at school and there were at least a dozen parties to go to every weekend in my city alone.
Back in the early 90s (it was a roller skating) but for us in San Diego we knew it as a TJ song because we could drink in Tijuana at 18 and they played this song at ALL the clubs down there. It brings back some really great memories 😂

Starr, Cyre, it’s still alive for many of us: the BEST times! 😄
Oddly enough, this wasn't her biggest hit.. "when I hear music" was much more popular. My favorite Freestyle artist was SaFire, (also TKA) but sadly the entire genre kind of faded into obscurity, only the old-school fans still remember most of them. Thankfully, I am one of them :)

This was right around the era of a genre called "Latin Freestyle" or just "Freestyle" Many of the groups were female from Trinere, to Debi Deb, Exposè, The Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation etc. It was simply feel good dance music in heavy rotation at the clubs and the radio
Technically I guess it’s pop or synth pop but we call it freestyle and if you love this dig into other freestyle songs but this one is the best. Totally right about it being a skate jam. I was a kid when it came out but I grew up in a freestyle area so we still jammed this in high school.
Some more Freestyle AKA Latin Hip-hop for the RSR Fam. This was club music that was created in Miami and New York. This song in particular reminds me of cruising in the car, with my MTX Speakers blasting out the car and going through Coconut Grove here in Miami. The nightlife spot to hang out that had several clubs. Back then it was clubs, house parties, the beach and skating rinks. What a time to be alive. You would have loved it Jay.
When this song came out I was in high school and it reminds me of backyard keg parties. Where you pay at the door and go in the backyard and drink from a keg of beer with friends hanging out jamming to dance music

You can tell this is Miami Based Freestyle with the fun uptone beats and lyrics. New York Freestyle was sad and the lyrics were about being hurt and falling out of love.
in 1985 at 17 I ran away from home, a small farm-town in the middle of nowhere and moved to California, where I promptly hit the dance-clubs. This song was in heavy rotation, and oh my God it brings back great memories! Check out her other hit: *_WHEN I HEAR MUSIC_*

I’m from Miami and was in my late teens/early 20’s during the amazing Freestyle era!Saw artists at the clubs a lot! Freestyle is no joke it paved the way for dance music today! Please listen to Trinere, any song by Trinere but I love I’ll be all you ever need.
Oh the memories...in high school during break/recess, kids would get together and have breakdancing dance offs to this song. I was so jealous and wished I had those moves!
The chola jam. My sisters used to have little parties when I was a kid and they had to watch me when my mom was gone. Well they played stuff like this and all thier friends and my cousins had huge hair and denim skirts and jackets and such. Really cute days😂
The Dan LeBatard radio show used to use this as a way to send listeners into the weekend by playing this song with really fun drops from the show and sports. I still love the show.
Never knew the title or artist but the minute it started playing I was immediately brought back to clubbing in Philadelphia in early 90s. Lisette Melendez, Sweet Sensation, George Lamond. Just a lot of fun.
The 80s were the absolute most awesome decade in the history of music. If I could, I would want to turn back time and live in an endless loop in the 80s...
What memories! This was so huge at the time. Along with her other hit "When I Hear Music" - nonstop played at the dance clubs. I had the 12" vinyls of both! EDIT: Yes, HUGE in the skating rinks. I both went to them and worked at them and it was a very popular skate jam.
I'm 49 years old and I remember break dancing to this song. Her first hit was "When I hear Music" that came out in like 1983-84. I think "Lookout Weekend" was 1987. You should listen to "Jam on it" by Newcleus. Or "Let the Music Play" by Shannon.
@CANDOKNOWHOW FACT!!! I remember when this came out. I was 15. Was at the local amusement park, at night on a Friday. It was busy, but walked up on a pavillion type area where 'Jam On It' was blasting out from a high powered jukebox inside of the nearby gift shop. Couldn't believe how loud it was from that distance. Suddenly hit a wall of people and realized we came upon a breakdance battle. '85 and breakdancing REALLY just starting to blow up. Wall to Wall people watching. This song brings back a ton of great memories from the 80's.
This genre is called "Latin Freestyle" or just plain "Freestyle".. Actually, Shannon's song "Let The Music Play" which you already saw, is considered the very first (Latin) Freestyle song.. Freestyle is basically recycling the drum and bass tracks from hip-hop, and instead of rapping, singing a latin-ish melodic ballad over it.
🔥🔥🔥 Oh man!! You just brought me back to High School late 80s with all my friends crusin, listening to this club music on Friday and Saturday nights..now you can do TimmyT, StevieB, Kyper , C&C Music Factory, Rob Base!!! I can smell the Polo cologne and wearing the Zcavarichis 😂😂 see I knew Jay was a skater!! Every time groovin music comes on he does the skate move!
80's was great for HIP HOP as well!! Not sure if you guys have listed to Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock!!! But they are FIRE!!! Awesome songs "It takes two" and "Joy and Pain" are a MUST LISTEN TOO!! Kool Moe Dee was an amazing Hip hop artist as well!!! Great songs like Wild wild west, I go to work, How ya like me now.
That's our signature Miami Freestyle...it's not really associated with disco or skating rinks, it's club and cruising around Ocean Drive music. It was also played in our Latin-themed festivals and at the county fair.
Woohoo! Absolutely love your reaction and Freestyle! Been waiting for you to do something like this. Their song "When I Hear Music" is one of my favorites, as well as artists such as Johnny O., Cynthia, Stevie B...and the list goes on. Thank you for this!
Yes this made me get off my chair and start doing The Wop lol ahh Freestyle is such an underappreciated music genre that came from the 80's. Please do more groups like Trinere, Cover Girls, Expose', Shannon, Jaya, The Jets, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam and many more!
Trinere rocks-and Company B had some good stuff. I bet Jay would love some House music-I still remember the bootleg cassettes that people would get and copy from people like Frankie Knuckles. Man what a great time to be alive! And for the record, House music originated in Chicago.
I'm mentally back at the Roller Rink with this one. "When I Hear Music" is another Roller Banger!! 🤩 "Meeting in the Ladies Room" by Klymaxx is another one that stands out.
Jay and Amber, you two should also react to Two of Hearts by Stacey Q and Two to Make It Right by Seduction. These two songs were popular in the clubs and the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lookout Weekend is definitely a banger song indeed!!!
I was literally just looking at reactions to this song a couple of hours ago! And now y'all are doing it! It WAS a jam at the rink! Speaking of skating rink jams...y'all should react to Newcleus 'Jam on it' Oh to be 13 again... Keep doin' what y'all do! I love it!

Freestyle music! Huge in the '80s and '90s, especially in big cities throughout the US with large minority population (Latinos, African Americans, Italians, Filipinos, etc) like NYC ( NY/NJ) LA, (California), Philadelphia, (PA), Chicago,( IL), Detroit, (MI), Houston, ( TX), Miami, (FL), San Jose (CA) , Canada, Philippines, Italy, etc . Its like hip hop/breakdancing music/beats with Latin style music flavor, R&B sand Spanish music style singing, sometimes a little rapping, but mostly singing. Yes, at skating rinks, dance clubs, parties, radio, music videos, etc. lol Bands like Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Shannon, Noel, TKA, Cynthia, Stevie B, Company B, Lil Suzy, Trinear, Lisette Melendez, Coro, Cover Girls, Expose, Johnny O, Collage, Rockell, Joselyn Enriquez, SaFire, Pretty Poison, Linear, Corina, etc
I cannot believe you're reacting to Debbie Deb! I've attended a few freestyle concerts the past few years and have another one coming up in November. If you're going to continue with freestyle reactions, you may want to listen to Stevie B ( the king), Judy Torres (the queen), George Lamond, Cynthia, Johnny O, Sweet Sensation, Safire, TKA, Noel, Coro, Lisette Melendez, Cover Girls, etc. You may eventually want to give house music a try as well. Enjoy!
I love that you're doing more freestyle like Shannon, Expose, Taylor Dayne and this absolute banger! It's kind of like when they tried to shut down disco, freestyle came to the rescue. "One More Shot" by C-Bank is a total banger with crazy sounds, amazing vocals and crashing glass and cowbell, sheer beautiful madness, honest to God I don't think you've ever a dance record like it and I know you'd love it.. All those fantastic John Robie and Arthur Baker produced records along with Latin Rascals that came out in the early 80s that were so fresh and fun. " 8 Arms To Hold You" by Goon Squad, "Honey To A Bee" by Tina B, "Remember What You Like" by Jenny Burton (which is the same people behind C-Bank and equally unhinged with its sounds in a great way and stratospheric vocals), "Don't Make Me Wait" by Bomb The Bass, a British group freestyle track that just kills it and the almighty "I.O.U." by Freeez, just delivering it right out of the gate and the piano and vocals kick in and bring it even higher.
This genre is known as FREESTYLE. It came from New York’s latin club scene. Marc Anthony and Brenda K. Starr got their start singing freestyle music. We used to breakdance to this music. In Chicago, it was mixed with HOUSE Music (another genre). Other artists to explore in this genre are: Cynthia - “Change on Me” Lisette Melendez - “Together Forever” Stevie B - “I Wanna Be the One” Debbie Deb also had another hit called “When I Hear Music”
Carlos, I WISH that reactors would react to House Music; was just listening to "Work It To The Bone" by LNR on my way to work this morning; so much great music in the genre; "Jack Your Body", "Move Your Body", "Deep Inside", "You Used To Love Me" are just some that come to mind. The DJs were CREATORS, as you know; Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Louie Vega, Timmy Regisford, et als. Some of the best times of my life were on Brooklyn and Manhattan dance floors getting lost in House and Freestyle.
Born in the mid-late 70's, grew up in the 80's and early 90's. I can vividly remember skating to this song, and as a kid, one of my favorites to listen to at the rink was The Rappin' Duke by Shawn Brown. I know there were a few others, but these two I remember quite well.
when i was a younger person they had all-night skates on Friday nights with a lock down between 12 midnight to 7 am. so we would skip out around 11:50 like your going home normally and show back up at 645am and blend in when they open the doors in the morning. Out all night no hassles unless you get caught LOL
GROSS... I am sad that I listened to things like this back then. It appalls me that my taste in music was so terrible. Thank goodness I came to my senses and wiped this music from my memories and got back into metal, classic rock and soft rock.. This crap is terrible

Huge in the '80s and '90s, especially in big cities throughout the US with large minority population (Latinos, African Americans, Italians, Filipinos, etc) like NYC ( NY/NJ) LA, (California), Philadelphia, (PA), Chicago,( IL), Detroit, (MI), Houston, ( TX), Miami, (FL), San Jose (CA) , Canada, Philippines, Italy, etc . Its like hip hop/breakdancing music/beats with Latin style music flavor, R&B sand Spanish music style singing, sometimes a little rapping, but mostly singing. Yes, at skating rinks, dance clubs, parties, radio, music videos, etc. lol
Bands like Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Shannon, Noel, TKA, Cynthia, Stevie B, Company B, Lil Suzy, Trinear, Lisette Melendez, Coro, Cover Girls, Expose, Johnny O, Collage, Rockell, Joselyn Enriquez, SaFire, Pretty Poison, Linear, Corina, etc
Enjoy!
This song requires roller skates.
Omg I totally forgot this song!!! Love it!!👏
Thank you for taking me back to my teenage years. And yes I could shred it at the roller rink.
on the westcoast we have an artist from that era named ''EGYPTION LOVER'' who still performs .....we called it ELECTRO HOP ''
Other artists to explore in this genre are:
Cynthia - “Change on Me”
Lisette Melendez - “Together Forever”
Stevie B - “I Wanna Be the One”
Debbie Deb also had another hit called “When I Hear Music”
I Wanna Be the One is my favorite Stevie B. song...
All right but don’t leave out Miami! A lot of great freestyle artists came out of Miami
All of these were HUGE Shuffle Skate Music at roller skating rink just about every where
Also: Fonda Rae - 'Touch Me'.
and: Shannon - 'Let The Music Play'
Awesome! About time we got into 80's dance music. Freestyle was the best part of the late 80's.
🔥 🔥 🔥 freestyle is the 💣
Wow, haven't heard this one in a long time. Old school, love it. Song suggestion: Midnight Starr--Freakazoid.
Born in the mid-late 70's, grew up in the 80's and early 90's. I can vividly remember skating to this song, and as a kid, one of my favorites to listen to at the rink was The Rappin' Duke by Shawn Brown. I know there were a few others, but these two I remember quite well.
Memories of Jr High and High school, Class of '92 baby
when i was a younger person they had all-night skates on Friday nights with a lock down between 12 midnight to 7 am. so we would skip out around 11:50 like your going home normally and show back up at 645am and blend in when they open the doors in the morning. Out all night no hassles unless you get caught LOL
Debbie Deb -When I hear music
This is the first song I played in my car in 1987 after getting a new stereo and amplifier installed. That bass was 🔥🔥🔥
GROSS... I am sad that I listened to things like this back then. It appalls me that my taste in music was so terrible. Thank goodness I came to my senses and wiped this music from my memories and got back into metal, classic rock and soft rock.. This crap is terrible
Dude! I'm so jealous! Lol.. I love this shit 🥰

This 80's Sunday cruising music! Yes, and the roller rink and low rider dances/parties! 80's funk/break dance music was so good! Definitely check out more!
'When I hear music' was definitely bigger you gotta hear it. There was a whole club scene back then and we danced at all the surf clubs at the Jersey shore to this kind of music in 88 and 89
