  • Welcome to this video about the stages of labour. In this video I go into detail about what to expect during the 1st stage of labour, the 2nd stage of labour and the 3rd stage of labour. I also talk about the different phases of labour (within the first stage of labour). Expect to learn more about:
    1. Labour contractions
    2. Pushing baby out
    3. Giving birth to placenta (after birth)
If you know more about labour and birth and what is happening inside your body, it can help you to feel more confident and at ease throughout the birth process.

Thank you for this video, came at the perfect time. I have a big baby and hoping to get her to come soon so I can get her out without c section or medical induction. I love to see what is happening with contractions as that makes me feel more aware of what’s happening in my body FOR my baby vs feeling like it’s just painful and I’m not sure what is going on - so this was so great to see the phases and what’s happening with the muscles to bring baby to my loving arms ❤

I felt super happy and optimistic at the start of my labour. I was using my hynobirthing techniques, everything was on track.. i had a relatively inexperienced midwife (a fresh graduate) and she said that baby was in the right position (eg not posterior).
Fast forward 15+ hours of active labour with almost no progress... i was getting exhausted so i said 'yes' when they offered to break my waters to speed up labour hopefully. And that's when the back labour started! I cannot describe the pain. It was the worst pain in the world. I could cope with labour pains in the front (tummy / side of body area) but the back pain was indescribable.... thankfully my midwife had to leave and a more seasoned midwife took over, who checked my cervix and noted that baby is actually in the posterior position (eg face up/ sunny side up)... That's why the labour isn't progressing well and I'm in so so much pain. Getting an epidural was the best decision, ever. It helped my body relax (because i wasn't tensing due to the horrendous back pain) and my baby was able to flip into the correct position thanks to that.
Sometimes getting an epidural is the best choice. I firmly believe that i did everything i could to manage the pain naturally but back labour is just something else... it's a different kind of pain altogether.

Thanks so much for your message. I definitely think you made the best choices for yourself on the day. An epidural can be an absolute blessing, especially if you are in a lot of pain and feeling exhausted as well. Congratulations on the birth of your baby. How are you feeling? Is everything going well for you and your baby? 💞

This is relatable! I gave birth 6 days ago. I was induced with cervidil because my cervix was still closed and high. After 11.5hrs my waters broke. But I was only at 1cm. Several hours later only 2cm. They gave me oxytocin. Hours later only 3cm. My midwife told me baby is face up which I didn't believe because since 29 weeks baby was already head down and face down. All this time she was face down that's why I was thinking I can go natural. But since I had to be induced I knew I had to get some pain relief, I got heat packs, panadol, gas. Of course oxytocin made everything fast and my contractions were almost nonstop. I thought I should pee, maybe it will relieve some of the lower belly pain. 😅 Omg going to the toilet was so painful it felt like something heavy in the front. I was having contractions and my husband was there assisting me, and the midwife was there trying to keep the fetal heart rate monitor on my belly. I suddenly had the urge to poop so I said I feel like I want to poop. I tried but nothing is coming out not even a fart. After a few contractions I was able to pee. Went back to bed. And thinking how many hours it would take per cm until I get to 10. 😨 So I told my husband I'll just get the epidural. I asked the midwife how fast it will take effect and if it will last until the birth 😂 at that point nothing is worse than the nonstop back labor. I got the epidural which was easy. Then they put a catheter on me. And checked my cervix only to find out I'm already fully dilated. Then they checked again after an hour and baby's head was near so they made me push but I can't feel her so they used a vacuum cup and it helped me feel what to push. Had 1st degree tear. But girl that epidural is heaven!
Looking back, everything happened just how it should be. I was induced because baby isn't growing much anymore, my placenta doesn't have good blood flow and I am at risk of preeclampsia. My baby was only 2kg, still in the hospital but I can take her home next week they told me today. 🥺

@@HypnobirthingWithAnja Dear Anja, thank you so much for your kind response. I think I'm still struggling to come to terms with it that I've needed to get an epidural because I've always wanted to have a non-medicated birth (with natural pain relief options only). So your kind words mean a lot to me. It's good to hear that I'm not less of a woman because I accepted the pain relief that was on offer in the end.
I'm hoping to give birth without an epidural when I'll be giving birth to my next (my second) baby. I will definitely buy your content so I can use that as extra preparation before I do. Thank you for being so understanding and encouraging, it really means a lot.
By the way: yes, thank you. I'm doing great and so is my baby. He is 14 months old now. We survived a very difficult breastfeeding journey, 3-4 months of colic, 12+ months of waking 4 (or more) times per night.... It's been a rough year but it's all paying off now, he is happy, healthy, he has started sleeping better (totally unexpectedly! I didn't do any sleep training, he just started to sleep better suddenly) and he is just a delight. 😊 I feel like the luckiest mum on earth. ❤️

I was wondering about the self doubt and panic; I'm kind of glad to know it's natural due to the pain and overall pressure of birth.
What about the water breaking? I assume this diagram is for if the water has already broken? When in this video diagram does the water break? I know it's a case by case thing but there has to be a part where the hospital staff intervenes and pops the water to progress the labor?

    • @HypnobirthingWithAnja
      @HypnobirthingWithAnja  10 месяцев назад

Thanks for your question. Your water could break at any point. Sometimes it breaks before labour starts (in this case, you would be checked at the hospital and they would maybe give you a window of time to wait and see if your labour starts within 24/48 hours - if it doesn't start, you may need to be induced - that's if they are concerned about your baby not being protected by the amniotic fluid and there being a risk of infection in the womb). If your contractions start but your waters haven't broken, they could break at any point. Mine broke after 18 hours of labour, I was nearly fully dilated and getting ready to give birth. Some women's waters break earlier or later than this. There are no set rules. Some babies are born in their amniotic sac and it doesn't properly break. So everyone is different. 💞

Hi! Thanks for your question. Don't worry if there are no signs of labour yet. If you are a first- time mum, it's normal for labour to begin after 40 weeks of pregnancy. If you are keen to try and encourage labour to start, I would recommend watching these videos:
