  • 3/5 A short series of videos about some of the best hikes in the Chamonix valley.
This hike takes us from the village of La Tour up to the Col de Balme at Swiss border. We cross over to climb the Croix De Fer peak and tehn get caught in a dreadful thunder and hail storm before heading back into France and up to the Refuge Albert 1er with amazing views of the Glacier du Tour. A huge day on the mountain, but highly recommended.

Hail, Ouch! Smart hiking moves. Always bring your rain and wind gear and getting shelter during storm...thanks for vid. Heading there this summer.

Col de Balme, always windy! I went there from the croix de Fer coming from Vallorcine 15 days ago. Few clouds in the valley, I had no visibility, windy and raining weather on top. Nice to see the view I was supposed to get ;)

Yeah it's a nice view! At least you didn't get blasted with hail I guess!

Really enjoyed your hike videos! Heading to Chamonix around June 1st, could you recommend a place to stay?

Glad you enjoyed the videos! We stayed in a Pierre et Vacances apartment close to the town centre. It was great value and good location near the bus station. But there are so many hotels and apartments to choose from I wouldn't know where to start work recommendations! You could also stay slightly out of town somewhere on the free bus network to get even better value.

I have two more videos to add to this series, but I haven't finished editing them just yet. The best hike we did that week? Maybe the one in this video, despite the bad weather! It has lots of variety. La Jonction is also really good, but Grand Balcon Sud was the best for wildlife.

I think most took about 5-7 hours, but we were never in much of a rush and left plenty of time to enjoy the views. Have a great time in May!
