The Village is highly underrated. I think the reveal is excellent story telling. What they did wrong when they movie came out was advertising it as a horror movie - which it surely is not. If you go in with the right expectations, it’s a very clever subversion of expectations.
One movie that richly deserves a spot on this list is "The Crying Game". It made a big splash back in the day (for an indie film), but seems to have been largely forgotten. Unfortunately for me, I figured it about about 15 minutes before hand, but when the reveal happened, the entire audience gave a collective gasp. It was awesome. Check out the film if you have the time.
Very true snape was literally keeping a close eye on harry since movie one. Creepy how snape would always be lurking around at night like a ghost when harry was also wondering off
The ending of the mist (2007) definitely should have been more than an honorable mention. The shere horror my mom, sister and I felt when the ending came was beyond this world. Edit: just as Josh D points out the book doesn't end that way. In fact the book has no conclusion, it's an open ending.

To me the biggest reveal that I never saw coming is in 'Crazy , Stupid , Love' . When Hannah is revealed to be Cal's daughter , God that was some surprise
There’s nothing like watching these movie reveals like watching these movie reveals at a movie theater. I wish the theaters open up back soon so I can experience that beautiful thing we call movie magic. 😭♥️
It’s kind of left for interpretation though. We don’t know if it was Adrian the whole, the brothers taking turns doing it, or if it really was the brother. But we are supposed to be unsure and question who it really was just like her
@@Oklahomie95 I personally agree with your take, and I am a bit surprised that there haven't been more people who believe the same. @@carloscable it’s not rly a twist it’s just the huge reveal that’d he’d escaped. There was no referral to it going to happen apart from the rock hammer and the poster towards the beginning. It makes it such a good reveal and it all feels totally earned.
Snowpiercer’s reveal was very similar to Soylet Green’s when they found out what was really in those protein bars. Cool to see where the idea came from.
The twist in the Sixth Sense wasn’t that the boy saw dead people, it was Bruce Willis’ character reveal. Never saw that coming. And Spider-Man Homecoming was so obvious, wouldn’t call that a plot twist at all. Shutter Island is brilliant, that movie ending was insane. Think you could have added Inception as well, wasn’t expecting he had been there before. And Primal Fear, Edward Norton so good I wasn’t expecting his character to be faking it all along. Also, Basic with John Travolta, never saw that ending coming either.

I’m surprised Memento and Primal Fear are not mentioned....props for Oldboy for being an honorable mention. Due to all the hype surrounding the amazing “twist” in the “I see dead people” movie, I literally turned to my mom after the first scene in the theatre and said out loud “Bruce Willis is dead, isn’t he?” Moral of the story: ignore the hype if you are planning on seeing the movie 🤷♀️ My favorite of these would have to be “Usual Suspects”...gotta love the unreliable narrator 😊
Wow, I can't believe that no one saw that coming. It was kind of obvious unless you weren't paying attention at all during the movie and the fact that it was revealed that Liz's last name was Toomes couple of days before the movie was released. I work at a movie theater and I remember seeing it for the first time few days after it was released and people who were in the audience were a bit irritated with the who was surprised by the reveal.
Ashley Downey Not really obvious, in the Spiderman universe there’s actually a Liz Allan who at one point was a love interest of Peters, and never really explored Vultures family as much, so to the comic book followers it was an unexpected twist.
You missed two of the best. First is The Bad Seed. You know who the murderer is throughout the whole movie but their ultimate fate was so surprising that there is a scroll at the beginning asking people not to give away the ending. The other one is The Crying Game. That twist us still shocking today.
I call BS on the example that the used for 2019's Invisible Man - the brother was a patsy, he was set-up by Adrian; the moment when Adrian is in the psychiatric cell with Cecelia and says 'Surprise' or the climactic dinner scene were the best twists I didn't see coming in that film.
There was literally no bigger shock in my moviegoing life than the reveal in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. I saw it first at a Hollywood screening, then again during its first run, and NO ONE COULD BELIEVE IT. NO ONE SAW IT COMING. And the sound that went up in the theater when they heard it for the first time is still, to me, indescribable. No one sees that and laughs it off. It was literally BEYOND IMAGINING when the first theater audiences saw it.
It came out my senior year of high school, and a kid at my school spoiled it for me before I could see it. That kid better hope I never see him again. :)
@@spideydew20 Same thing happened to me before I saw THE STING. My brother told me the end months before I got to see it. I loved it so much, though, that it never mattered.
Just my opinion, I think you guys missed the plot twist in Lucky Number Sleven. Possibly one of the biggest "oh shit" moments ever when the "Nick Fisher"'s true identity is revealed and all the puzzles pieces of the movie finally come together to reveal what happened and what is actually happening
Right?! My brother is AWFUL to watch movies with, 'cause he's always got the whole plot figured out like ten minutes in, but The Others actually threw him, so it's got my vote. xD
@@nickh5081 SPOILERS (DO NOT READ THIS if you haven't seen "The Others" yet). While they were similar and maybe it was inspired by "The Sixth Sense" they were also different in that we have seen so many movies about humans being haunted by ghosts, but this shows us what it's like to be the ghosts in a house invaded by humans. It also explains so much about the housekeepers that arrived and had so many historical references like WWII, tuberculosis and photos taken of dead people as a regular practice. It also is interesting because the mother didn't know she had died because after smothering her children and "trying" to off herself with a rifle she pulled the trigger yet nothing happened -- and then she saw her kids and they were "alive" and talking to her after all, so she put the whole incident out of her memory. So much came together at the end like the husband's strange demeanor upon returning from WWII and the disappearance of the first housekeepers without notice. This is how ghosts themselves can be confused, not realizing who they are. It expands on the basic premise of "Sixth Sense" enough to make it unique and stand on its own.
@@SWLinPHX The point is it was still the same twist - Bruce didn't know he was dead and neither did the other dead people - so the end of the Others was basically the same reveal. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but it's a spooky ghost story with a twist and the twist is the same as one of the most famous and popular ghost stories of them all.
But why did Laeddis ask "which one would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?" How's he a monster for killing a psycho children murdering wife? I never understood that. In my eyes he was always a good man even after he killed his crazy wife.
I think it was meant to show awareness of his actions and to hint to his psychiatrist that he was “cured” but in his world of fantasy he is a good man, so feigns that he is still insane in order to die because the truth is too painful to live with.
The purpose was to show the audience that he didnt relapse into insanity. He wanted to get lobotomized because he couldnt handle reality. Living in reality meant living as a monster, because his reality was unbearable.
Another good one, in my mind, was "Now you see me": An FBI agent is hunting a group of magicians acting on specific orders. It's revealed the agent is the one who issued the orders. And, bonus point, he's played by Mark Ruffalo.
Shutter Island is the most powerful one to me, and when I rewatched the movie, I saw little clues left through out the film to the true ending if one pays attention.
How about Clue? It was released with 3 different twist endings that depended on which theater showing you went to. Another similar comedy mystery movie with a bunch of reveals would be Murder by Death.
The scene in The Dark Knight Rises where Miranda Tate stabs Batman in the rib and reveals herself as Ras Al Ghal's daughter, Talia while sticking up for Bane came absolutely out of nowhere for me that I was left stunned after the whole scene.
Seriously!!! SpiderMan Homecoming between these legendary plot twists. That had done multiple times and wasn't even a plot Twi's because it didn't affect the plot in any way.
That’s the only one on my list that isn’t in the video, definitely one of the best plottwists ever. Usual Suspect, Sixth Sense, Shutter Island, Empire Strikes Back, Planet of the Apes and Primal Fear are the greatest imo (no order).
@Andrew Smith I mean that doesn't really bother me at all since the movie doesn't really imitate that level of realism and that the ghosts don't know they're dead. They are restless and trick themselves into seeing "what they want to see." I think the intervention of special people like Osment's character is what generally helps them find out that they're dead and find peace.
@Andrew Smith I said it didn't bother ME at all, not Malcom. The ghosts see what they want to see, they don't know they're dead. Malcom's character "sees" that Osment's character is his patient, but he's not actually in reality. There's no sign that Osment's mom actually has him assigned to anyone at all. Malcom just imagines the interactions with her. Other than that there's no indication that Osment has someone seeing him at that moment in time in the movie. He just assumes Malcom is supposed to see him since neither of them knows he's a ghost and he's had professional help in the past. So that's really not a plot hole at all
@Andrew Smith The only reason he often knows they're ghosts is because they have obvious wounds/scars from the way they died. He thought the one lady ghost in the kitchen was his Mom at first, but when she turned around he realized it was a ghost with cuts on her arms. All the other times we see ghosts, it's clear that's what they are. The one kid has a giant bullet wound on the back of his head, the girl in his house with vomit coming out of her mouth, the people hanging by their necks in the school. Malcom happens to have his wound in his clothing where it is easily missed. His sixth sense helps him see the dead people, but the movir doesn't say it helps him identify that they're ghosts immediately. For all we know, Osment's character might see way more ghosts than he realizes each day, it's just the obvious ones that scare him since he knows what they are.
They test-screened it in front of a bunch of audiences with multiple different people being the guy behind it all. The one that the audience guessed least made the theatrical cut. No-one picked Mark Ruffalo because the movie wouldn't exist if it were Mark Ruffalo's character. So it was merely a case of the film makers deciding that a surprise was more important than telling a good story. Also, it wasn't a good story to begin with.
So in a movie about a dystopian future with riots in the streets and a totalitarian police state at the helm, you immediately figure that rioters and looters being shoveled into government trucks are being turned into food and fed back to the masses? Might not be that much of a stretch today, but in the early 70s, nobody thought that way!
Yes, but, that was crowd control in the future being depicted. I'm guessing that in that future, people were probably being cremated, since, apparently, conventional farming had reached a point of diminishing returns, and, the population has outstripped mankind's ability to feed the bulk of humanity!
I think Primal Fear should have been included on the list. Richard Gere plays lawyer Martin Vail who usually takes on jobs for money and prestige rather than any sense of the greater good. His latest case involves altar boy Aaron, eccellently played by Edward Norton, who is accused of brutally murdering the archbishop of Chicago. Vail finds himself up against his ex-pupil/ex-lover, played by Laura Linney. The story reveals that Aaron suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and his body houses a second personality, Roy, who was the one technically guilty of the crime. The film climax not only stuns the audience but makes total sense and doesn't take away anything from the story that you saw up to that point when it hits you.
The best ever is the reveal at the end of Jean Des Florette/Manon Des Sources. The old blind lady revelation to Cesar Soubeyran is mindblowing. It also gives us the best piece of acting in cinema history by Yves Montand who is playing Cesar.
Honorable mention: Angel Heart when Lucifer hires a man to track down another man and said man finds out he is tracking down himself. A Beautiful Mind. Vanilla Sky. The Book of Eli (Denzel Washington is blind)
The Book Of Eli's ending TOTALLY blindsided me(pun intended!), So much so, I had to watch it twice, then again, to see if I was right! The second time, I started seeing clues that lead Me to that conclusion, and, third time, cinching it!
I also realized, that many in that universe, may have been blind, like the daughter's other, and, maybe even some of those he fought against! It may have been that not everyone could read and even fewer could read Braille.
incendies from Dennis Villanueve is one of the movies with the most unexpected twist I had ever seen. That movie and Parasites kept in my mind for a long time
That was a stunning reveal, and, upon repeated views, it strikes me all over again that, all the clues should make it obvious. Water, green plants, humanoid/human beings, Great Apes, speaking English. How dumb was I?! It takes seeing the Statue Of Liberty to tell you where you are!? Come on!?

Where's "Sleepaway Camp"?
I didn't see that disturbing ending coming
Most people agree that is THE most incredible plot twist in at least horror movie history, if not all movie history
Nah, best plot twist in a horror movie was Friday The 13th. It was Jason's mother the whole time
Yes!!! They should have had that on the list.
BRU you’re right
Since you've a Deadpool profile pick, I give you these 69 likes.
Great movie
I was expecting “Primal Fear” somewhere on the list.

The Harry Potter Snape twist was mind blowing and makes you literally rethink everything

The ending of the mist (2007) definitely should have been more than an honorable mention. The shere horror my mom, sister and I felt when the ending came was beyond this world.
Edit: just as Josh D points out the book doesn't end that way. In fact the book has no conclusion, it's an open ending.
right? that should have been number 1... Watchmojo sucks
Easily #1. The range of emotions went: Damn that sucks for him. It sucks, but he had no choice...wait, WHAT?! No! NOOOO!! WHY??? WHY DID THEY DO THAT?!? HOW COULD THEY DO THAT?!? THEY CANT DO THAT!! I can't believe they did that!! Wow! The balls it took to do that!! You know what? Good on ya! I can't wait to watch this with someone who hasn't seen it yet!!! 👍
One of the biggest wtf moments ever!!!
It’s both a good twist and a horrific one. I’ve really grown to appreciate it more for having some serious balls to do that.
That was the saddest movie ending ever, in my opinion.
Btw, John Doe wasn't apprehended in Seven. He walked into the police station and gave himself up to Sommerset and Mills.
Old boy's twist at the end was just mind blowing it was totally unexpected it should have been on the list....
Clearly WatchMojo didn't finish watching The Invisible Man, because it was only the brother in that one scene. It was Adrian the rest of the time.
I wanted to say the same thing
It’s kind of left for interpretation though. We don’t know if it was Adrian the whole, the brothers taking turns doing it, or if it really was the brother. But we are supposed to be unsure and question who it really was just like her
@@Oklahomie95 I personally agree with your take, and I am a bit surprised that there haven't been more people who believe the same.

Due to all the hype surrounding the amazing “twist” in the “I see dead people” movie, I literally turned to my mom after the first scene in the theatre and said out loud “Bruce Willis is dead, isn’t he?” Moral of the story: ignore the hype if you are planning on seeing the movie 🤷♀️

The moment the Spider-Man Homecoming twist happened, everyone in the theater gasped and/or went “What!?”
I thought everyone expected that
EXACTLY!!! Everyone screamed LOL!!
not surprising
You missed two of the best.
First is The Bad Seed. You know who the murderer is throughout the whole movie but their ultimate fate was so surprising that there is a scroll at the beginning asking people not to give away the ending.
The other one is The Crying Game. That twist us still shocking today.
Identity was a fantastic movie! That ending was shockingly unexpected
I know right! I was looking for a comment like yours!

Donna Cianciosi yes ! That was brilliant
Every one of these films I saw when they were originally released and was blown away. I am an old guy and this is why I love movies. Thank you.

Great list but "The Sting" not only a great twist, but a GREAT movie!
The Others should have had its own number instead of being a footnote to The Sixth Sense. That plot twist had my mind blown!
Right?! My brother is AWFUL to watch movies with, 'cause he's always got the whole plot figured out like ten minutes in, but The Others actually threw him, so it's got my vote. xD
They did it that way because it was too similar, but they could have done them side by side, instead.
Great movie awesome twist
Everyone always forgets "No Way Out" from 1987. Great thriller. Great ending.

I gotta give credit to KEVIN SPACEY for taking roles involving people with intense urge to do no good deeds.
Hmm.. Never thought of it like that. But, I have to agree.
Maybe he wasn’t acting so much hmmm
Yeah, he had such a promising career. What happened to him?
I love Michael Keaton. One of the best most underrated actors of our time. Close second, Dennis Quaid.
But why did Laeddis ask "which one would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?" How's he a monster for killing a psycho children murdering wife? I never understood that. In my eyes he was always a good man even after he killed his crazy wife.
A good man would've arrested his wife, not kill her. He believes that's what he should've done. 🤷♀️
That piece didn't happen in the book.
He sees himself as a monster for murdering his wife rather than turning her in and getting her mental health treatment.

What about “FRIDAY THE 13th”? The ending was a major freak out! Of course I was only 19 when I saw it at the drive-in! JASON LIVES‼️‼️🤣🤣😂😅🙃
I really don't think Clue can count seeing as it's based on a board game.
Jacob’s Ladder, Donnie Darko, and Memento? C’mon!
If you've ever had a really bad trip, Jacob's ladder is that much more terrifying.
The scene in The Dark Knight Rises where Miranda Tate stabs Batman in the rib and reveals herself as Ras Al Ghal's daughter, Talia while sticking up for Bane came absolutely out of nowhere for me that I was left stunned after the whole scene.
Also, is no one going to talk about that seemingly pointless "fake Mandarin" scene in Iron Man 3?
I loved Memento!
Those suggestions would ruin their streak of making basically the same lists with the same movies multiple times
Seriously!!! SpiderMan Homecoming between these legendary plot twists.
That had done multiple times and wasn't even a plot Twi's because it didn't affect the plot in any way.
I saw the ending of the Mist, the fatal timing is absolutely brutal and gut wrenching!
The bigger reason it was shocking is that it was completely different than the book.
It made me burst out laughing. I'm not even sure why - I was just not ready for it at all and it caught me so off guard.
Kevin Costner's identity in "No Way Out"?
Glenne Headly's identity in "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"?

Usual Suspect, Sixth Sense, Shutter Island, Empire Strikes Back, Planet of the Apes and Primal Fear are the greatest imo (no order).
Yesss
Some of these movies like The Sixth Sense are talked about so much that I never cared to watch them because I already knew the twist ending lol
Man The Sixth Sense is amazing tho. I saw it knowing the twist already and it's one of my favorites
@@georgevalley1319 I figured it out at the dinner with his wife .... He's talking to her .... But she's not talking to him!
“Now You See Me” should have been an honorable mention.
i was about to comment this
Twist didn't make sense, hence no one saw it coming. Should be on the list
The movie is absolutely shit, but it was a twist.
that twist was so fucking stupid.
Mojo: *No one saw the Soylent Green plot twist coming!*
Soylent Green Trailer: *ends with people being shovelled into a truck.*
