  • This goblet is made using mezza-stampatura, also known as mezza-forma (Italian, “half mold”). With this technique, vertical ribs are made on the lower part of a blown object by inflating the bottom half of the parison into a dip mold. The goblet shown in this video is decorated with gilding and enameling. Learn more about this object in The Techniques of Renaissance Venetian Glassworking by William Gudenrath renvenetian.cmo...
    The Venetian glass industry enjoyed a golden age during the Renaissance. By the early 1500s, the wonders of Venetian glass were well known throughout western Europe. Not well known, however, was how these objects were made. Until now. The result of 30+ years of research by William Gudenrath, The Techniques of Renaissance Venetian Glassworking - renvenetian.cmo... - presents 35 complete reconstructions of Venetian glassmaking techniques through detailed 360˚ photography and high-definition video.

    To think they had figured all of this out back in the 16th century is truly remarkable to me. What a great presentation!

    Even though this is Italian Venetian glass, it looks a lot like the enameled glass that was made in Bohemia in the 19th and early 20th century like Moser glass, etc. Watching all the hard work that went into these pieces, made me really appreciate my antique enamel glass collection even more!!
    I didn't know they still made glass like this today. Great video!!

    The glassblowing and shaping is so meticulous, and then the gold leaf is applied and engraved so poorly.

    Hi! I'm currently working on some casted piece that I want to enamel and I've checked with reusche but I can't seem to find any gold enamels that fire under 1400 degrees. Do you guys have any recommendations or sources that I could look into? Thank you so much!!

    • @corningmuseumofglass
      @corningmuseumofglass  8 лет назад +4

      I'm sorry , but I don't know of any gold bearing enamels that fire below that range. Perhaps a ceramic gold lustre might work, but I'm not sure. You could try talking to a ceramics supply company. Thanks so much for asking.

    • @cake5328
      @cake5328 8 лет назад +1

      Corning Museum of Glass Thank you so much for answering! Also I found out today that bullseye makes a gold enamel that fires at 800. It's more of a satin than a metallic but it's still the best option I've found.
      Thanks again!

      If you're interested in glass made by Bill Gudenrath that is available for purchase, check out the Museum Shops here glassmarket.cmog.org/browse.cfm/william-gudenrath/2,115.html

      I wanted to buy one of his pieces for myself, but unfortunately the shipping to Europe was just a bit too steep for me.

    I am ignorant with glass making, (I've never tried it...but I want to!) but I have a question, why did you shape the glass after you decorated the goblet?

    • @corningmuseumofglass
      @corningmuseumofglass  8 лет назад +1

      The glas needs to be reheated to fully fire / fuse the enameled glass onto the surface. With traditional enamels (not contemporary low-fire ones) that happens at a temperature above where the glass will soften. The piece is picked up and reshaped to help accommodate this softening of the base glass and ensure the enamel is completely fired on.

    There's a mistake made in narration. The last time the piece is put in the annealing oven, the narrator says "The piece is broken free of the blow pipe" but its actually attached to a punty.

    • @belacickekl7579
      @belacickekl7579 2 года назад +1

      It's definitely a habit of calling all the sticks "blow pipes"; I feel like most glass blowers have done that at one point or another haha

    I wish I could learn how to make glass, but I'm clumsy. I would probably end up in the burn unit for another 3 months if I tried learning how to do this, lol
    As a burn survivor, this made me feel a little too nervous, lol.
