For anyone who doesn’t know, this is a demonstration done by the Corning Museum of Glass in Upstate New York. This isn’t a museum quality piece, nor was it meant to be.
This craftsman is already a skilled one. Now imagine how much practice is take to get this done perfectly. And then be fast enough to make profit. I think it is sad how rarely people acknowledge that artisan crafts are often tough jobs that take as much as achieving a university degree (although much less brain and more instinctive understanding of course).
And here you are not acknowledging them by saying ‘much less brain’, you don’t realise histories greatest geniuses were often artists, sculptors, painters and damn good ones. And you need to be a hardworking and smart to produce good work, not just instinct... try relying on instinct only to produce fine work, even after 50 years. Impossible.
This is a little sloppy, but to be fair, they're doing this so it can be filmed easily if they were doing production quality it would probably take twice as long and be closer work (getting in the way of the camera more).
Uh actually bill beneath is a world renowned teacher and historian at corning museum of glass who works solo with no assistants. Something quite a few current Venetian grasshoppers have expressed admiration for. Bill is a world recognized expert on the history of glassmaking techniques so maybe just say thanks for your work as opposed to clearly talking out your ass?
usually at home hand blown glass just sits on the table or shelf and you don't see the unsymmetrical aspects as you do when it is on the pipe or punty.. if it is spinning on your table or shelf -- its time to get a excersoist !!! Gudenrath is a great solo glass blower and he loves to make the old stuff like that goblet.
oh HELL yes more videos of bill gudenrath. pay attention to how he says the word jacks and you will find yourself on a reckless quest to consume all content containing bill gudenrath saying "jacks"
Lanshilot you’re such a perfectionist, why aren’t you doing this demonstration? put up or shut up-if you can do better, prove it, otherwise, you’ve got nothing to say.
The fact that the white band around the cup is uneven makes me cringe. If you're going to put all the effort into making something like this, why would you have a section that looks that sloppy? The differing widths of the white glass really diminished the overall look of the goblet.
He’s doing a dumbed-down demo for dummies like you...when you’ve acquired 30+ years experience in your professional field and you still love what you do, want to give a very basic demonstration for people who have intellectual curiosity and wonder, do that demo in a really hot shop without melting equipment or personnel, patiently do things in an overbroad manner to show the general ideas CLEARLY, do it for love of teaching and communicating, THEN you can carp!
Andre, have fun replying those 2 year old comments who are (or were) unaware that this video was merely made for education. But you're acting wrong by insulting and blaming those who don't know, spitting on their faces your knowledge, it's unprofessional.
the glassmaker in this vid works at corning museum of glass. their library called the rakow research library has tens of thousands of documents spanning a thousand yeara of glass chemistry if you ever want to know more. ive used them heavily in my own colored glass formulations
Now I see why comments are usually turned off for this type of video. Even here, it’s the idiots making all the noise. One wonders with the B. Museum didn’t get THESE artists to create this piece for the video.
eh watching this, all that i can think of is how highly skilled artisan back then.. considering there's no youtube channel back then, so each demonstration must be seen on site, and mentorship like you won't give your knowledge for free.. so much hassle..
the blowing technique might be good but the design is not pretty, not well executed and honestly the way the gold is applied and then the enamel is just so bad . I mean come on, he's suffering from parkinson or something
olafursson kyllian your erroneous assessment and diagnosis based on misapplied and inept sarcasm serves only to indicate you suffer from facetious inanity and irrelevance.

Solo goblet making is the absolute pinnacle of glassblowing skill. Talking smack about this just shows you to be a clueless lout
I don't think the point of the video is to make a perfect replica of the object but to show the process.
you can say that again....
Lol I'd love to see you do better than bill completely solo. Are you even a glassmaker?
Wow! What a cool process!

Thank you, Corning Glass, for making this demonstration. Well done and fun.
HARRY DIDYA PUT YAH NAME IN DA GOBLET OF MOLTEN GLASS
Thankyou it's very interesting.
Hey Cloudy Wishes, its been 2 years so I have to ask. Still interesting?

Most of the comments are just hating on this guy's work I'd like to see them try to do what this guy does.
The guy is supposed to be a professional but his work doesn't look it. You don't need the ability to make glass objects in order to critique the work.
To all perfectionists, PREPARE TO CRINGE!
Lanshilot you’re such a perfectionist, why aren’t you doing this demonstration? put up or shut up-if you can do better, prove it, otherwise, you’ve got nothing to say.
CFR Andre that doesnt change the fact that this is sloppy for demo purposes. He could have done better. Hi skill is outrageous
@@cfrandre8319 I know I'm six months late but Andre, buddy you're my fucking favorite. I've never seen someone be so smug about glass before
What elements go into the turquoise glass to make that color? The other colors? I have heard that gold makes pink cranberry glass and cobalt blue.
Very nice!
Wish I could work for the British Museum. I didn't realize their work was so extensive.
1000°F is about 540°C
I like it without the white trim, because green and blue look so rich next to each other.

He was trying to make a ancient bong. It didn't come out right.

Everybody here is so mad at everyone else, it's like a time capsule of shame and hate I fucking love it
Great Video! I wonder what chemicals they used to color the glass that pretty Turquoise?
manganese makes a nice turquoise
@@joshschneider9766 Thanks!
@@dorkgirlalamode no problem. manganese can also make a pretty bronze brown in higher concentration

Im gonna need that blue in boro please!!
Tag has several very close blues. Can easi my wrap gold foil around it.

Such skill!
The video is not suitable for people suffering from OCD.
( it is educational video obviously , not intended to present an artisans work )
AWESOME PROCESS... but the product is so ugly
!!!!! Not glass blowing, but MIND blowing!
All the time he is working on the glass with his right hand he is rolling with his left.
Is that real gold?
Yes.
No, its fake leaf I'm sure. I wouldn't put really gold on that shoddy piece of work.
TJ, my experience with leave-gold says, the gold seen here, is worth about 50 cents - so, why not?
The melted turquoise was more expensive.
eh watching this, all that i can think of is how highly skilled artisan back then..

It’s a shame all that beautiful craftsmanship that the goblet is blundered to halfassed enamel blobs, sketchy scratchings into spotty gold leaf.
Why does he always say centripetal force.. it's centrifugal force actually
shreedatta marathe no, he’s correct. look it up.
I read the title as " How To Make A Tortoise Goblet" . Kind of dissapointed now.
Some of these glass blowings look incredibly rude to begin with! (blush)
Fascinating, but at the end of all that--it's a bit garish, isn't it?
why are people brutal about this goblet lol I couldn’t paint eggs for Easter without cracking them
Looks like a chinese knockoff of the original. Good technique, bad execution.

CFR Andre what a fucking social justice warrior. Fuck off
@@cfrandre8319 How many times did you refer to the thesaurus on your desk just to make that comment.
I think It's just a mockup to demonstrate the teqchniques
man that thing is ugly...
Mikail Elchanovanich it’s about the process, lighten up already
CFR Andre lol whos tellin who to lighten up
C- poor effort
That's actually really ugly!
What a rough job all round - my 7 year old could have decorated it more evenly. Awful.
look forward to you posting the video
Fahrenheit?! Look I realise you're a yank AND you work in a museum... but, please... Fahrenheit!!!!
😴
I don't like the colour
Kanupriya Pandit don’t look at it then, sheesh!
Those red dots were not PERFECT!! 😠
sloppy
I wonder what is done with the left over gold dipped glass!
almost always scrap is thrown away if it's got color in it.
