I often find that I get demotivated when I think of the hobby as a series of tasks. I get motivated again when I think about what I love about the hobby and the atmosphere I want to create on my layout.

Yeah, great point. I drift in and out of model railroading and plastic model planes sometimes combining them. Also my first n scale layout was completely experimental. Trying cardstock scenery, backgrounds and very amateur videos combined with original and classic rock music. I'm also a musician, mostly guitar but again, also a little bass , harmonica and experiments (LOL) with banjo and mandolin. Plus flying tiny drones once in a while. It's the variety that keeps you going.

Balllasting fun: a friend used his train gondola cars to carry the ballast out to the track for ballasting. He did this for his whole basement empire. Had fun using trains. : )

My wiring had me stumped for awhile, so I went to building rolling stock its and trying my hand at weathering rolling stock. I had a friend stop by recently and asked how it was going on my layout. I showed them and they had a helpful suggestion that got me back to my wiring. I can now run trains! sometimes we just need an outside perspective. Thanks, Jimmy for all the videos.

My inspiration partly comes from model railroad vids like yours and, quite often, ones that are not about perfection. Also, ones that are about train travel and the feeling of trains and model railroads. I think, in the end, it's about how our model railroad makes us feel and how we translate that into a layout.

Great post, Jimmy! I've work in manufacturing all my life and found a long time ago that compartmentalizing is the key to everything. Break down all projects into small achievable goals. Write out everything you want to do and then, break down each of those items into smaller mile stones. I'm diagnosed with ADD as well so, every day, have a small goal and when its a accomplished, feel productive and you will want the next goal. I break from trains to welding to woodwork, house maintenance, dog training...etc., etc. All gets done, all is an achievable goal and all feels really good when it is done. Don't hyper focus on one thing and get burned out. Step away and have other passions as well. Thank you for the post!

Well, during a storm 4 weeks ago, a wall in my basement collapsed it took almost 1/2 my layout and damaged several locomotives! at the time I was updating my carnival scene! Now I'm really motivated to get back up and running again! I'm an Optimist, so I take it as I'll correct a few things that I wanted to get too!! Great Video!

Key to avoiding burnout for me is spending time with friends in the hobby. An ops session or seeing a layout at a friend’s place spurs me to work on my layout. Don’t have friends in the hobby? Join your local NMRA chapter!

I've been a model railroader for over 60 years and do all scale's. So I never get burned out on anything. One has to balance there time out equally. Take time out and do other things as you need to. It's what works for me, when you get bored with the layout, nothing is permanent on my train layouts, anything and everything can be changed as I want including my track plan. Even the lighting buildings and street lights can all be switched around.

Jimmy, I really needed this video. Man I haven't done much on my layout over the past few months and it's a struggle to try and find a way to get back into it even though I have a list of projects that I want to do to move forward. One of the things that encouraged me to learn new things (including some I haven't done yet) is the NMRA Achievement Program. It was designed to get you as the modeler outside of your comfort zone and try new things and that is a requirement in order to become a Master Model Railroader. - Jason

You missed one thing, kids. Getting your kids or grandkids to experience model railroading is inspiration to keep going. Seeing your layout through their eyes gives motivation for new things. If you don’t have kids, neighbor’s kids (with their parents permission) is another way to experience motivation. If they don’t like it, at least you’re giving them memories for the future.

Great thoughts. I model in HO, N and G and switch it up a bit if I get restless or frustrated with one. I also changed a few things up for instance, I model HO in steam to diesel transition era NYC RR, and N in Modern freelance 90s -present with occasional guest spots of some vintage passenger trains. I may get tired of couplers and work on buildings for a while. Currently designing my next N layout and that is fun too. And since my busy summer work season is coming, I'll have less time, and may just run trains for a bit when I have a chance. Hopefully I can do any and all benchwork outside while its warm too.
I had a longer period when I was just overwhelmed and didn't do anything, but found again that it relaxes me and started putting a little time into it about a year or so ago. An hour or half hour a day gets you so far a year later. I built two small N layouts and got my HO ballasted and partially scenicked. It can go in phases. Take your time and enjoy-it's a hobby!

I would add, take photos and videos of your layout. It’s fun to do and show up a lot of ares on your layout that need improvement. I started doing this as a way to keep my brothers, who live a good distance away, informed on my progress. Sending them videos ended up with me creating a (very modest) RUclips channel, because email files were not big enough. All of that really kept my interest going.

I have an 11x11 U shaped layout based loosely on “modern indiana shortlines”. However i found myself taking breaks to play around with t-trak modules for fun to the point of me having more track in t-track sitting in my closet than i do on my actual layout. I still tinker on the indiana plywood but it’s been where it’s at for about a year now with very minimal updates. Anything interesting i find in real life i tend to make myself making plans for in t-trak.
Long story short- variety on locations or modules lets you do smaller projects that are so different but accommodate fast.

  • @JoshuaEhlen
    @JoshuaEhlen 6 месяцев назад

I definitely take breaks when I need to so I don’t burn out. But sometimes I just force myself to work on the layout when I’m not feeling motivated. I figure if I wait until I’m motivated to work, the work won’t get done in some sort of timely fashion.
But sometimes if I’m not motivated to work, I’ll just railfan my layout and think through my next move or project so something is done correctly and in my vision.

I have always loved trains. Always wanted to model them. Have always been on a lower end of earning scale to have them. Grew up with trains for more than 40 yrs of my life. However wife, kids, a divorce , in my 60’s collecting a pintence os SS I. I sure understand for me not possible today. I know this, if you can afford a lay out today think your self lucky. It’s a hobby that will bleed you dry if you can’t afford it. I so would like to have a lay out today. But sadly I can only watch others have a dream I truly wish for. Maybe some day I will .

I have to imagine when you do youtube videos you turn your hobby into more of a job than say someone who doesn't do youtube videos, so that probably is a bit of a different view than the ordinary person.
For me it's how to get motivated to do something in the first place. See all these layouts, that's what I want, realistic looking scenery, a relaxingly awesome view, yet when I try something I get a look of green painted wood and grey crumpled up balls on the side which then saps the motivation right out of me wondering if there's simply an artistic skill level requirement that I simply do not have.

Great video, made me introspective about where i am with my railroad. My layout is as "done" as it's getting really. It has some things that need to be fixed but will constitute a major re-design. So I am deferring them until Version 2 of the railroad. NMM, Now, More Modular. Next major project I have will be the teardown of this layout, and the starting of a new one! I'm not bored of the hobby per say, just the scenery.

I had a hugh N scale layout. I built a structural table with 2 wings. We moved and I took it apart. I kept acquiring new locomotives and rolling stock. Just a different phase. I discovered Kato Unitrack and then decided to do modules. I like running trains on the carpet. Agree with your points. I also visit train museums and ride excursion trains. Rail on. BTW Shawn has made money off of me. Thanks for the introduction.

My advice for burnout or avoiding burnout is to:
    1) not look at all the tasks you have going on at once. That can look daunting and make you feel like you’re not making any progress.
    2) find prototype photos or just do some fun research on your trains. It can be interesting finding what consists you loco pulled, where it operated and maybe try to imitate it with your models. That can motivate you to acquire specific rollingstock or weather it to match.
    3) don’t rush your jobs. It’s hard to do that but taking your time not only helps improve the job but it helps you enjoy the process. Likewise don’t concentrate on the finished product, concentrate on the journey you’re taking to get there. By all means have a goal, but don’t focus on it.

I was about ready to rage quit when all 3 DCC locomotives I have failed to perform decently at a recent train show. Include the fact that I had 3-4 freight cars break (lose wheels and couplers) at the same time. I went home to work on scenery and will revisit the non working locomotives and maybe install decoders on others I have in my inventory.

At this moment of my life, I'm stuck in a situation in which I'm studying for a PhD in physics and live in an apartment complex, so I have limited time to dedicate to my trains and no space to work on a serious N scale layout as I would like to (I've been thinking about starting to build in T-track modules, but the problem is that I have no space when I can saw wood and such, so if anyone has any ideas please lmk). I can run floor layouts, but it gets exhausting after some time, so what I have decided to do in the meantime is to practice and master weathering. I have many ideas and many models to weather, so it revived my passion for model trains. Also, when I get bored of doing it, I just switch to playing videogames or cooking. Having many hobbies can relieve the burnout for some other hobbies.

since I don't have the room for building any kind of layout, I have been working on building the type of fleet I will be needing. But the one thing I am worried about is that my locomotives will dry up before I get a chance to run them. I would like to propose another thing to consider if you are expereinceing Model Railroad Burnout. It might not be the model railroading.
Take a look at other aspects of your life. Are you eating a good diiet? Are you getting enough sleep? Are you healthy and exercising? Are your personal relationships positive?
If you are increasing in age (is anyone not), consider getting your hormones checked if everything else is dialed in.
While ideally a lack of motivation is just that and lmimited to the hobby, it might also be worth looking outside the box at other aspects of your life as well.
