For hundreds of thousands of us, this became the gateway to the Vietnam war. My platoon spent 2 full weeks in the Receiving barracks. It took that long to marshal a full platoon because the Navy and Chair Force was hogging all the volunteers. For every 10 draftees, the Army got nine and the Marines would get 1.
To my recollection there were no draftees in my platoon, though there were two deserters. Boot at MCRD San Diego, 1967. Those P.S.A. jets taking off were very tempting. As I think of it now, it reminds me of the Johnny Cash song about Folsom prison and the trains that keep rolling by, "their probly drinkin coffee and smokin big cigars". "...the true patriotism, the only rational patriotism, is loyalty to the Nation ALL the time, loyalty to the Government when it deserves it." - Mark Twain Semper Fi.
Lmao this sucked... I remember for the piss test in receiving, I was bladder shy and nervous, I just couldn't take a piss into my cup. Slowly and slowly, the numbers thinned out until I was the only one left having to piss. That brought all the DIs into the vicinity to motivate me.
Thank you for posting this video. I know this is one years old since you posted it but I still love watching this video even though other people have posted it I can watch this video over and over and over for whatever reason because I like it. And I know what they were going through because this is what they did to us and the NAVY, but they didn’t yell at us like these Marines commanders are doing. But I still love this video. Thank you over here on the big island of Hawaii.
We arrived about 2300, 21 June 1989. We started TD1 with 83. Graduated with 72, and 12 of them were pickups from other platoons (drop backs). The one that killed us the most was Pvt. Kidd. Not real bright, but he was all heart !

Don’t be your platoons “Boyd”! My rack mate, Recruit Boyd, cut his fucking forehead with a razor on Black Friday because a DI told home to shave his face. He took that order literally, so he shaved his entire face! His cheeks, chin, nose, and his forehead! Dumber than bag full of doorknobs. I spent a lot of time one the quarter deck because of his stupidity. If he fucked up, I was responsible, so I would get smoked, right along with him. If I tried to help him, I would get smoked for breaking discipline. I was fucked either way.
I knew someone who moved to cousins house in California so he would be sent to San Diego supposedly easier than Paris Island I went in the Army wasn’t bad some basics are worse than others Went to my nephews graduation in San Diego impressive
@vrl4355 I remember when we met our Drill instructors. The FIRST thing our Senior DI said was "you are all adults, but NONE of you are men. You're all weak pu$$ies. I will make you into men". By God he did. You may not recognize your son at first. Before boot camp I used to slouch bad. When I graduated my family thought I grew 3 or 4 inches. Nope. I just stopped slouching and started standing straight and poised.
@kabutoyakushi6618 Maybe, but you can't simply drop an opinion on something you never endured or went through. You just sound ignorant and arrogant at the same time.
May be that is the only time when the barber receives respect from people, he is humming a melody as he were the shiet, but that is all he does for a living, a second job as barber and security guard or cab driver in a nearby town. All of those recruits are , as we were told, maggots, but that is just the beginning of the journey. The barber and elderly had their chance, they hum and are bored of their job...
It isnt the screaming, it isn't the IT sessions (those get you in real shape) it isnt the order structure (like being yanked out of your rack at 4 in the morning and you have 3 minutes to get everything on.) The challenge comes after the first few weeks when the initial high wears off and youre home sick. Thats what gets a lot of recruits. Stay strong fuckers. It comes to an end.
Nah the Marines are the only place I can kill people legally without getting arrested. That or being a cop and shooting black teens minding their own business.
It’s not for everybody! With that being said, people love to talk down on them, but they’re some of the mentally strongest human beings on the planet. Some people go for benefits, some to get away from home, other to test themselves. There are good people in there and sometimes, that’s what certain people need, to be surrounded by others with similar experiences like them. It’s only 4 years minimum, that goes by quick. Funny it’s mostly lazy people who don’t understand the importance or have any idea what it truly means to have a strong mind. A confident one that you can quite literally use in any situation in life. Yes there are bad things about it, but being closed minded is no good.
It’s been more than 10 years since I went through this. Crazy looking back on such a wild experience.

That DI seriously say Marine "Corpse" in the first 30 seconds? Wouldnt boots be eviscerated for doing that?
Probably testing them to see if someone would say something.
…and then his voice cracks at the end of his speech.
