      Great Video. I really appreciate the example that you started with ( the 60deg layout) By contrasting the (3) techniques all using 60 degrees is superb.

    You did a great job on this. Now I am convinced that I need to clean mine. I really liked the explanation of the differential and angular calculations.

      Thanks Bruce, I do think it is worth it to clean it up. Also as I was told true differential indexing is a little different, what I am explaining is plain or simple indexing.

    I just got a BS-1 from PM. Box said made in China. Ordered March 2022, arrived Sept 27, 2022. No manual came with it so I printed one from Grizzly. The chuck is very stiff adjusting. Thanks for the videos. I was surprised at it's weight, with 6" chuck 66#s.

      Larry Schweitzer - Thanks for the comment. Yes, they definitely have a little weight to them. Sounds like they may have changed suppliers during these challenging supply chain times.     Outstanding video on that dividing head from formula to cleaning and set up, very best I've seen 👍👍👍👍👌👌 Little fuzzy on the last formula yet but will work on it.

    Just a recommendation, when tramming the dividing head square to the table its best to put a known test bar in the chuck and traverse the table. You can check the tram in the X or Y plane as well as the Z. Rotate the chuck and split the error. I wouldn't trust tramming the dividing head off of the casting or the chuck body unless you have verified that they are parallel to the spindle. Even still, it might be close but over 6" could really throw you off.

    Hey there bud, great video and I just wanted to to fill ya in on the vfd motor situation. So after doing a ton of research I think it's the rear bearing in the motor that's bad I'm gonna call the rep In the morning and go over it with him. It just sucks I'm going to probably have to take that tank back off the lathe and probably get a replacement. So much for making chips this week maybe two. Anyway thanks again for the chat we had talk to you soon!

    Pretty good. When you lock it down you barely have to snug it, not really make it tight. So that screw should be fine. The original B&S which these are copied from, has a locking screw about the same size. Well, the B&S is hardened as is the nut. But considering what the B&S would cost if being made today, surely a good $3,000, the difference is understandable. The bearings these come with are fine. These aren’t rotating parts the way a lathe or mill are.

      @melgross - Thanks for the comment. Yes, the quality is no comparison to a B&S but for the price point, I would say it is pretty decent. And for as often as I plan to use it, I think it will hold up just fine. Appreciate your perspective.

    That bearing race... Was watching going oh no oh no oh no, guess ya had to take er all apart again ya? When did ya figure it out, didja find it left over or didja run it and it wasn't right? Thanks for the vid btw, refered to it often as I rebuilt my new Vevor (clone).

    What was the purpose of making new washers for the tailstock?

      The other ones just seemed thin and the slots were large. More for the looks than anything else. I am sure the others would have held up fine.

    Timken bearing replacement? ? Is it one of those new and improved high speed dividing heads?

      You are correct, the bearing is already much more robust than needed for the use it will see. Just sharing what I saw someone else do. I left the original and saw no need to change it myself. The bearing it came with felt great.

    please i want to cut 79 teeth how to do it by dividing head

      @manueldsouza8857 - Since that is a prime number I believe you need a 79 hole plate and would do 40 holes for each division. I am not sure if any other simple indexing combination would work? The other option would be a compound indexing operation using a compound index head and a gear train. There are some calculators online where you can enter all the hole plate options you have available and what you are trying to cut to see if you get more options.     Wait. Am I hearing this correctly? You have to CLEAN it and then FIX it by eliminating backlash BEFORE you could use a brand new machine tool?
    Thank you for telling never to buy one of these.

      @wronfullyaccused7139 - Yes, that is definitely one conclusion. The backlash is more personal preference. There is always some, and you always have to go one direction to ensure it does not impact your part but to me less just feels better. As for the cleaning, sadly the trade off for price and quality these days sometimes means doing a little extra. If it is a tool you will use a lot then paying extra for better quality is usually the best plan. For a tool you will use rarely then you have to find the trade off that makes the most sense for you and they work you are doing. Thanks for the comment.

      @@BladesIIB : Thank you for your response. Try to understand that I am a retired tool and die maker. When I went to school at the very start of the 1970's and then on to the trade, I was brought up with Hardinge, Brown and Sharpe, Kearney and Trecker, Cincinnati, Palmgren and other American made machine tools.
      They did NOT have to be cleaned first and the backlash was extremely small.
      To my mind, they were built with pride. It seems to have disappeared.
      Now, you have to go to auctions if you want to find a quality machine tool.
      A B&S Dividing head, if it was not misused, would last almost indefinitely, it was that well made.

      @@wrongfullyaccused7139 I totally understand. I was several years behind you starting as a machinist in 88 but still well before the flood of overseas tooling. I also had the chance to see and use those quality tools you speak of. Took them for granted. I wish I had the time to hunt auctions for more of them. In the end sometimes I have to take the lower quality trade off, and just try to share to help others figure out their options.
