Why Is the US and Some NATO Members Holding Massive Military Drills in Morocco?

- A group of African and NATO countries kicked off the 20th edition of the African Lion military exercises in Morocco this week. The drills are the latest sign of how global powers are seeking to boost their security ties with the continent. And it comes at a time when Russia and China are also working to increase their presence there, both militarily and economically.
Under the joint leadership of the Moroccan and US militaries, thousands of troops took part in the drills. Called the biggest of its kind, the exercises will continue until the end of this month in several areas of central and southern Morocco. Washington and Rabat first launched the African Lion exercises in 2007, which are held annually with the participation of European and African armies. Last year, South Africa hosted naval exercises with Russia and China, which raised alarms in the West. And in January this year, a senior US general had warned that Moscow was working to expand its influence among African countries.

It remembers me the drills of Moroccan soldiers, called once Goumiers, before the operation Avalanche in Salerno/Italy in 1944 and other operations that followed.

I believe Morocco should become a NATO member. If the Russian military were to establish a presence in Morocco, it would pose a significant threat to Western Europe due to Morocco's strategic location near Europe, Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. Recently the U.S. has been enhancing its military ties with Morocco, including selling advanced weaponry typically available only to NATO members. Therefore, Morocco would be a valuable addition to NATO.

Can I just make something clear, no Russia is moving to morocca, that will never happen, neither USA. We create relationships and work in partnership with other countries and USA is one of the oldest ally . France annexed Moroccan lands to Algeria because France thought it would remain the colonizer forever. Algeria was never a state in the legal sense of a modern state. Morocco (the regions of Fez and Marrakesh) became a state and an empire. Tunisia was a country as well. It is history, and unfortunately (and this is understandable) some Algerians do not accept the facts of history. Morocco has no role in North Africa as it is been cornered and surounded by the powerful army of Algeria on one hand and the freedom fighters of Western Sahara on the other hand.
