So, I'm learning as I'm going here. Vaccuum modulator controls the softness or firmness of the shift. The governor controls the shift points. Is one side (spring) of the governor for the 1st-2nd shift and the other side the 2nd-3rd shift (two different spring weights) or...after the rpm drops, the weights move back into place for the next shift? This, I don't know. Springs can be different material or thicker for firmness. This is my first round of inquiries, so for all you pros, calm down. If you can do it, so can I. We all gotta learn sometime. No need to blow up and bark about stupid questions. The stupid questions are the ones you don't ask.
Back to the governor. Pulling this thing in and out, switching springs, to me, would be an all day job. A firmer spring means a longer span between shifts? Or shorter?
    It's not a hot rod or racer. It's a 79 Chev 1/2 ton 4x4, 250 inline 6, th 350. It shifts into 3rd at 40-45. It's winding out at 30mph in 2nd gear going through town. No rpm gauge...yet.

Get a SK350 Transgo kit. It's not a shift kit. It's a shift improve kit. It will come with good instructions along with a new separator plate, gaskets, valvebody springs and Governor tuning springs. Start with the Governor springs. They are painted different colors. Look at instructions there is a chart to explain things. The kit is around $30. Amazon, jegs carries them.
Check out my playlist titled turbo 350 trannys. I've got other videos where I explain the Governor.

I haven't driven my newly acquired vehicle in all driving conditions it will be used. It's a 1985 M1010 4x4 military ambulance powered by a 6.2 diesel and a turbo 400. Does great on the highway with the 34 inch tall tire. But around town driving she doesn't shift into 3rd till about 40 mph. Once I hit 40 and can barley lift my foot and shell cruise back down to 35mph and hold 3 rd gear. My question is will governor springs bring that 3 gear shift sooner? Trick runs great with only 73k miles. Going to a 35 tire soon. That will help bring my rpm's down on the highway and raise my mph. Around town it just feels like the engines working harder than it has to because she loves holding that second gear. I'm all for shifting into 2nd when I need to hold a gear. Any suggestions would truly be appreciated.

First Start by removing the vacuum modulator and the the modulator valve with needle nose pliers. If there is a spring on the valve remove it. Then put valve and modulator back in tranny and test drive. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

Why would my nylon gear keep stripping out? This is the second time I only got about 9 hours of driving out of it. Th400 1984 Chevy G30

Check out my playlists titled "turbo 350" there's a video in there explaining this. More than likely your case bushing is gone causing tailshaft to have too much slop and riding on the governor gear. Hope this helps and thanks for subscribing

I bought a 1979 k5 blazer. I'm trying to figure out what tyranny it has so I can buy a kickdown cable and brackets. And I need a speedo cable. Are they the same?
