An ancient blue dragon builds a new lair in a forest, bringing a perpetual violent thunderstorm with it. The lightning from this storm results in the creation of hundreds of these mounds forming in the surrounding area.
One of my favorite monsters of all time! So much better if the players don't know anything about them and use those special spells that help the mound! Great video, Josh. I hope you are feeling better. We missed you!
This is very cool indeed! I absolutely love your take on this beastie broccoli boi. Eberron saves the day once more here; just say that it has to be lighting from a magically-empowered thunderstorm from the plane Lamannia, the Twilight Forest. This plane is the cosmic representation of elemental power, natural disasters, forests and storms, so it sounds absolutely perfect. This also means that Shambling Mounds would be uncommon on Eberron proper, except in areas with a manifest zone to Lamannia, but it would also mean that coterminous events would be absolutely disastrous for anyone who likes forests; this is entirely in-keeping with the "everything can and will mess up your day out of spite" feel of Eberron as a whole.
Good to have you back Josh. Great Monster Monday. Never heard of these before, that's why i like your videos, so educational haha! The party i play with came up against a young Remorhaz a couple of weeks back, would like to see your take on a Remorhaz!!
I can't draw very well, so for your contest can I just send a blank page and call it an invisible stalker? (actually I already own a copy of the book so I wouldn't enter and possibly deprive someone else)
Hell yeah! Missed you mate! I've been looking for inspiration lately as I am creating my first homebrew campaign and your videos always give me tons of ideas! Can't wait to TPK my players with a lettuce!
Fantastic as always, I'm definitely going to be adding this to my campaign, in my world there is a disgruntled Empyrean, and their emotions can effect the world around them, he lives in the Marshes and so I'm going to have this shambling mound and a few water elementals spring to life, becoming the embodiment of his anger.
Mfw Curse of Strahd slaps this thing at the end of a level 2 quest... I had a hard time getting it across to my players that they had to RUN. (They eventually killed it but I had to considerably nerf this thing so they didn’t all die lol)
Splat yeah... I’m dm’ing CoS and when I️ saw this thing at the end of the death house I️ was shocked, I️ didn’t want a tpk right away so I️ helped the, out a bit.
The lightening strike idea comes from the evolution idea of a primordial soup getting hit with lightening to create life. So not really a big problem they are just a primordial type of life
Really great design. I love all the different materials you used and the frog sitting in the central skull but the contrast you used makes all these details look too indistinct.
I dunno. I like the idea of killer cole slaw. Can't take it seriously, but it's funny. I would be an unfortunate victim since I'd be laughing at "the cole slaw glares at you with a menacing look in it's mayonnaise eyes."
So... Does that start out as a sapient cabbage and undergo a transformation or does it start as coleslaw and is then imbued with sapience? I want to know now.
In my Saturday game we have a running joke that my character, Dune, is a shambling mound in disguise. This is because he is from a place in the setting that is a large swamp. The DM and I made a dumb joke about him having swamp points and good boi point. If he reaches 6 swamp points he becomes a shambling mound, and if he reaches 6 good boi points he loses his class and all his attacks heal the enemy until he can reduce himself to 5 good boi points.
Im using this as a boss fight in the HumbleWood as tbey wander the marshlands of the Mokk Fields. I have worked the lightning in as a rare missed bolt from the bow of the falcon goddess of the hunt Reya.
I'm going to use one of these next session. But I changed it up a bit. It's basically the spirit of a small piece of old growth forest in an area that has otherwise been completely altered to fit human needs. It was once mighty but with every new patch of forest that was cleared, it lost more power and and consciousness. With most of its former domain gone it is no more than a instinct driven beast. As my players find there old standing stones inside this last piece of forest, the ground starts to rumble, earth, moss, plants and decaying matter start moving, turning the area into difficult terrain. Parts of it well up to smash into the characters, potentially throwing them down and gripping them. Whose not strong or resourceful enough will be pulled into the mound and will start to suffocate. I changed around it's mechanics too. Most importantly I took away the lightning Absorption, but I also figured it would be weak to poison and necrotic damage. If they manage to escape (which I hope) they will encounter a druid, whose lifes work was to protect this last pice of wilderness. He will explain what they just faught and by then they will also see plants wilting and leaves turning brown, reflecting the damage they did to the spiritual embodiment of this ecosystem. I swear I'm not evil I just like making my players go through the motions 😂
So good to have you back and feeling better. We missed you and you describe and draw us a moist rotting cabbage monster... is that how you were feeling?

Oh dear
Maybe that's why Blue's like deserts, few plants to accidentally turn into enemies (which they can't even eat).
I like to think that the shambling mound is dormant untill lightning strikes it and wakes it up, similar how defribilators shock us into life
I LOVE the little frog in one of the eyesockets of the skull. It's just so small and innocent.
You can take breaks were not mad just because you need some time off.
Yeah. Make sure to take care of yourself.

The frog peeking out of the eyehole makes the whole thing borderline adorable. (Oh also, welcome back!)

After Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, your players never know what to expect.

Magical lightning with unpredictable effects.... so many ideas....
Always enjoy your videos on Monday morning. Keep it up!

(video question) how much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I never actually paid attention to this monster, but now I think I might use one if one of my Tempest Cleric's spells backfires. :3

Your vids are amazing always makes me want to pick up my pencil and flip through the monster manual 😁
And glad to hear you are feeling better!
glad to see you back.
top notch work as always.
👊
Welcome back and another amazing monster
This is so beautiful, it might be my favourite. Reminds me of Fern Gully

Do you take homebrew creations for MMs? I believe I remember that being mentioned.... If so I have a monster to recommend.
Could you do a video on the warforged or maybe modrons? I'm doing a clock punk campaign and I'd love to get some fresh ideas.
please draw asmodeus i would love to hear ur take on him and see how you would draw him
make me so much think about the water benders in the swamp
Amazing as usual! Maybe a black dragon nesxt?
In my world, the lightning has to be magically summoned, or from a storm that WA as created magically
*Was
Design looks like some spawn from shimmer in the movie Annihilation. Any correlation, or is it just my imagination?
You gotta do the dragons next man

I always use shambling mounds as slaves or pets for other creatures.
Hey
mabye do some lizard folk
