I hear this and I just imagine back to the Eastern Roman Empire. Rolling through the Aegean, the mountains of Anatolia, ships on the sea sailing east and west. Then, at 2:14, in the distance, a beacon. We get closer, seeing the Theodosian Walls grow larger and larger as we approach. We're at the gates now, they open before us. And then, at 3:09, we see it: Constantinople, the Capital of the World. Trade ships from every corner arriving in its docks, citizens cheering on in the hippodrome or just going about their lives, the Hagia Sofia standing tall for all to see.

Basil II's diplomacy screen shows part of a Byzantine church under the evening sun.
Basil II's leader ability is a title used by Byzantine emperors meaning "born in the purple", denoting they were legitimate heirs of a reigning emperor, born in a special porphyry-clad pavilion in the imperial palace, while his leader agenda references the close relationship between the Byzantine empire and the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Basil II first appeared as a non-playable leader in the Vikings, Traders, and Raiders! scenario.

@@pablor.sepulveda9929 Actually, Porfyrogennetos means "born in the purple", but does not distinguish whether he was the legitimate heir or not. It just points out that he/she was born while his/her father was Emperor, which is interesting, because Basil's father became Emperor one year after Basil was born. In fact, his brother Constantine VIII, who was born two years later during the reign of Romanos II, was Porfurogennetos, but wasn't the heir to the throne (as he was the second brother), while the heir Basil wasn't born in the purple.

The more I think about it, the more Basil II really is the best possible representation for the Byzantines.
Are the greater and better leaders in Byzantine history? Sure. Better or more iconic emperors can be named. But that's not the point, that's not what the Byzantines were.
They were persistant. Despite their flaws, despite their infighting they remained when the rest of Rome fell around them. Just like Basil II they remained when all others failed. They were not the best, they were simply the most resiliant. For 1,000 years after the fall of the West they stood alone, a giant in the East.
Basil is the best choice of leader for them in Civ.

The saddening part is, after warding off so many threats, the end of rome happened under catholic hands. Turks were torn apart by mongols and romans were reclaiming lands and their diplomacy was in touch with mongols. When crusaders sacked the treasure enough to make many more crusader army from ONE city, it was death of constantinople with no hope to recover. Then venice enjoyed full control of eastern coasts. Ottomans were a chiefdom lucky enough to be right next to the bankrupt roman lands to capture and they got along well with other stronger turkish lords. Catholic world deserved to face and especially terrorized on sea by a much more aggressive, proficient in war and a muslim rome.

Actually this is the real theme of the modern Greek nation... This hymn is played in every church every 15 of August, in national celebration of "Dekapentavgoustos" (means "15 of august") in which according to the Orthodox church Virgin Mary died and ascented to the heavens (and yes in Greece we celebrate the death more than the birth, because only with and after death the salvation will come)...

From the walls of your city, you gaze at the Turkish army amassing in the field right in front of you. They prepare their cannons, aiming to fire at the walls that have protected your city for centuries. Your guards implore you to step off the walls, in case the enemy tries to take advantage. You decide to settle into your palace, but not before inspecting the waters around your city. Your navy seems to be successful against the enemy ships, it was a good thing you ordered that chain formation, you think. Even with the overwhelming Turkish force, your men are still putting up a fight. But you know, deep down, that it may not be enough. You are still waiting for those Venetian mercenaries to arrive, but your patience for them is wearing thin. You asked, no, you begged for the leaders of the west to come to your aid. You were willing to unite your church with the Pope, submit to him and end the schism in the church that has lasted for hundreds of years. But they will not help you, the Pope told you lightly that he could not command the kings of Europe to help you, even in your hour of need.
You are the Basileus, the Emperor of the Romans. You have learned from the histories that your domain has lasted for over a millennium, and the name of the Romans stretches back even further. You know the massive legacy emperors such as Augustus, Trajan, Hadrian, Diocletian, Constantine, the great man you share your name with, and Justinian, and many others left behind. Everything they left behind was for you to rule, and you look at the map of your domains, and the domains of those great emperors. You see how the territory grew and then shrunk, and then shrunk some more, and then the west fell, and then the east was left to shrink some more. And you see your domains, the tiny parcels of land you control. It's just your city, Constantinople, that stretch of land on the western shores of the Hospitable Sea, a few islands in the Aegean, and maybe most of Morea, but that's it. You wonder then, what is really worth fighting for? The enemies of your civilization are going to destroy it all anyways, as they had in the deep past. No matter how far it may come back, it will all be for nothing. Your city, your empire, is done for. It should have been destroyed a long time ago. You could've been born an aristocrat in one of the pleasant Italian cities, or a hero in the Reconquest of Spain, or, hell be damned, one of the Turk officers your men are sacrificing their lives fighting against right now. At least you could die knowing that your empire, your people, will rise to the top of the world. But no, instead you are a petty king, of a petty land, whose peak was a thousand years behind you, and you will die defending a shell of what your people had once been: great warriors, philosophers, orators, writers and craftsmen. Your legacy will be but a tiny footnote in history. A king who died defending a pile of rubble. Why has the Lord resigned you to this fate? You decide you can't ponder this question forever, and must act to save as much of your subjects as you can. After a busy day finishing the preparations for the assault, you go to bed.
Weeks pass. Though the defenses are losing their grip by the day, somehow your people remain resilient. They help out on repairs, and try their best to keep the morale of the troops high. Maybe this is a sign that your empire will survive the siege. Maybe you don't have to worry about being remembered as a king of a dying land. Maybe you can be remembered as the king who got his kingdom back up from seemingly impossible odds, and ushered in a new age of growth and prosperity for the Romans. Then, you are woken up in the middle of the night by your military advisors. They tell you the Turks have breached the walls and are starting their offensive. You don't have much time left. You know this is the moment your world ends.
A final mass is called. You enter the Hagia Sophia, you hear the choir sing as beautifully as ever, and the eyes of your subjects rest on you. They have definitely gotten thinner, weaker, hungrier. But yet, they don't look mad. Maybe they know that, in spite of impossible odds, you tried. You tried to save them, their city, their civilization, and that is enough for them to thank you. But you still feel regret, you still feel like you have not done enough. You still feel like a failure, the Roman Emperor who let the Roman Empire die. Then you notice unfamiliar faces. You realize...they are Latins. Every citizen of Constantinople, regardless of their affiliation...has joined in the mass. You hear a quick report...the Venetians have arrived. Maybe this is the point things get better now, maybe the church will finally unite to stop the Turkish threat. Then you hear that they only brought a few men...not even enough to make a dent in the enemy army. Even though the west tried to lend you a hand, it is too late.
The liturgy continues, and at the very end, they sing the ancient hymn of victory. You are at first puzzled by this...but then you realize...they are calling out for the Mother of God to help then in their darkest hour. You decide to silently join in the prayer, but in the back of your head, you know it might not be enough. Nothing will be enough.
After the dismissal, you check on the situation. You hear numerous footsteps as you edge closer to the walls. You then see one of your soldiers retreating. You realize what he is doing...he is running back to his family. You wait for an officer to come to you and tell you what is happening, but no one arrived. You head near your palace. You see the last remnant of your army...the army that once conquered the world...scrambling to keep themselves together and defend whatever they have left. You see multiple fires raging, bodies scattered on the roads. This is the end. You have failed.
Maybe you should escape now. Maybe there is one last opportunity to fight another day. You tell a captain to get a boat ready. It seems that reluctantly, he complied and ran off to one of the ships still remain in the harbor, and you see him ordering the last few remaining seamen to prepare the ship for you. In those moments, you reminisce of the days where you didn't have to worry about Turkish invasion, and envy the people who were living in the golden eras of Rome. You then wonder... if there was any meaning to fight for the empire, other than to plunder the lands of their treasure, like the Turks are doing now. Maybe it was for a higher power...yeah that may be the case...but what about before Christianity? Why would the great heroes like Camillus, or Cincinnatus, or Scipio want to fight for what amounted to a small part of the world? Why would emperors like Augustus, Diocletian, and Constantine work to save their empire from threats when it was flawed?

    • @captainch6182
      @captainch6182 3 года назад +40

Then you think about the accomplishments of your long dead empire...you realize that despite all of its flaws, despite everything that has happened to it...it survived. And it didn’t just survive, it made itself better than before. It built great roads, sprawling, organized cities, beautiful architecture. It spawned great men of the arts, philosophy, engineering, and science. And it did this over the entire Mediterranean. No other nation of antiquity could match it, and it seems like no nation of this time could either. And when kept failing, it turned to the Lord, and despite the flaws of the church, it made the empire survive another thousand years. And you realize that even after the fall of the west, the great monuments, the arts, the grandiose vision of the empire survived, even with ruled by barbarians. Even if the Empire will truly fall now...Rome...will still live. The West WILL oppose the Turkish and Muslim armies, the framework, arts, and science of your empire WILL survive and usher in a new beginning, and the nations of Europe will grow stronger, and grow further beyond, and your legacy will. be. realized. You are not going to go down as the last emperor who let his empire die. You are going to go down as the last emperor who sacrificed himself for the good of Rome, for the good of the world. You will be remembered for leading a last stand against a foreign army that was stronger than yours, yes, but one that lacked the spirit of yours. Even now, at the very end, soldiers by your palace are defending their families and the city, and the empire. They could’ve surrendered, but instead they are choosing to go down as heroes.
You are reminded of the akathist hymn. And then you suddenly realize that the Mother of God has been defending Rome all along. She has helped the soldiers fight to the very end, and she will intercede for Christ in the countries of the west, defending your legacy and the legacy of the empire, inspiring them to remember the glory that once was, and work to build a better world.
The hymn rings in your ear. You can hear it. You now know what to do. You run back to the palace, where your troops are making their last stand. You hear the loud yells of your men, and the clashing of blades. They see you, one of them tells you to run. But you’ve made up your mind.
The sound of the hymn grows ever louder. The enemy soldiers see you, a surprised look on their faces. You tear off your robes, and pick up a weapon from one of your fallen men. The hymn reaches the crescendo. You join your dying men, and charge at the enemy. The last fight Rome will ever fight. You then feel yourself being impaled, but it is not the pain you linger on, it is the final words of the hymn. You hear them lowering their voices to a final stop, and by then all you can see is darkness and light. You are certain of what happened.
      Rome won.

@Pin what? For the majority of the Roman Empire's existence, Greek was the lingua franca of the eastern half of the empire. And also as the faith said, we are the roman empire. So as a Turk i embrace Byzantium as my legacy as well just like the ottomans and the roman empire. Ahem coolest empires in history boi

The Manchu Qing and Mongol Yuan could qualify for being very foreign from China, even though some of China's well-known dynasties (such as the Eastern Han vs. the Tang, the Zhou, the Qin, and the Ming) could be different from each other.

To me it seems more versatile for using as a base for the Byzantine themes for all eras. Maybe only " Hristos anesti" would be better. But still this one has e very " epic" background. The one i mentioned is a much more known hymn that is chanted in the evening of the resurrection in Good Sunday.

Eastern Rome was devastated by newly rising nomadic Great Seljuks when Eastern Rome was a large empire, defeated several times by Anatolian Seljuks who were even weaker than Byzantines and finished off by the small Ottoman beylik which flourished on its border. Destinity never gave stronger enemies to Byzantines.

@@pyroshrimp4073 Well, if the kings were competent, like they were in Basil's time, no nomad could beat that empire. It was really big. And rich. And strong. It had the stability of being based to the poor farmers and not the aristocracy. And these poor farmers were the soldiers that won so many battles in the 9th-11th centuries. But then a lot of instability came and a lot of useless kings and Byzantium crumbled, like every other empire in that place. And it still took several nomadic tribes (plus Western Europe) 4 centuries after Basil's death to completely annihilate an empire of that calibre. 4 centuries is bigger than the life of many great empires and it was only the decay time before Byzantium could be destroyed. It had existed already 7 centuries before 1025 since Constantinople became the capital and 17 centuries since Rome was founded. In its good times, it had many enemies much greater than the Seljuks and the Ottomans (including the Arabs, the West, the Bulgars, the Russians, the Persians), that sometimes attacked in groups, but couldn't beat a strong Byzantium (also answering to OP's claim that Byzantium never had greater enemies). So, the nomads (with the help of the West) only did a small part of the job of destroying Byzantium, the Emperors did the biggest part.

@@pyroshrimp4073 They tried, but the church (and thus the people) didn't like it. But at that time different religion was a big deal breaker for alliances and the only serious Orthodox country was Russia, which couldn't necessarily be trusted and had troubles of its own. And the West was asking for too much to accept Byzantium's begging. Also, there was that disagreement between Byzantium and Germany over who was more Roman (hint: neither of them was) and they also disliked each other for that. But they could at least have tried a bit more.
