Basil II's diplomacy screen shows part of a Byzantine church under the evening sun.
Basil II's leader ability is a title used by Byzantine emperors meaning "born in the purple", denoting they were legitimate heirs of a reigning emperor, born in a special porphyry-clad pavilion in the imperial palace, while his leader agenda references the close relationship between the Byzantine empire and the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Basil II first appeared as a non-playable leader in the Vikings, Traders, and Raiders! scenario.

ottomans did not hate eastern romans, in fact, they also referred themselves romans. For example, they called themselves as "rûm" which basically means roman. plus, turks or turcomans were only peasants in their eyes, therefore turks often rebelled against the sultan, especially in the 15th-16th century when anatolian beyliks were completely conquered by the empire.
