The story goes (I think) that the night before the capture, Constantine XI prayed in Hagia Sophia and then rode his horse slowly through the dark city to take up his position on the great Theodosian walls. I have an image of him on the parapets turning around and looking back one last time across the doomed city. The weight of a thousand years of history must have been absolutely crushing. Then he turned back to face the overwhelming Ottoman forces that he must have known would overrun the defenders and end the Byzantine Empire before the sun set that day. 😭
The Byzantine Empire did not have a national anthem. This is an Orthodox hymn rending grace to the Virgin Mary for a victory over the Avars. Now play it at 1,25X speed...
Amen

In reality it was the people's national/religious anthem/hymn to Theotokos/ Mother of God Maria , the protector of the medieval grecochristian state of Romania , known in West as Byzantium since 17th century.

Europeans have so much hatred for the Roman Empire and New Rome. The hatred comes from the fact, that New Rome as the capital of the Roman Empire, chose Orthodoxy and not Catholicism. The Europeans out of malice, even to this day, do not call it the Roman Empire but the Byzantine Empire. A name that has NEVER been used for 2000 years by anyone. The Byzantine Empire was coined as a name by an English Historian and was worshiped by the Catholic people.
Do you know that the Catholic Church with the 4th Crusade, attacked New Rome, conquered it and plundered it (1204 b.c.)?
The Capital of the Roman Empire was Orthodox. Did you know this? The Pope destroyed Rome because of the schism. Pope john 4/5/2001 Paul II apologized for this.
New Rome, after the disaster, fell easily to Turkish Islam (1453 b.c.)! And New Rome is still enslaved to this day.
Do you ever believe that the Capital of the Roman Empire would make a mistake in the schism? Why did he choose Orthodoxy? This is the scholar that all Europe even today hates the New Rome, and prefers to see it as a Turkish Istanbul. The Enemies of the Roman empire to the end were two. The Europe of the heretical Pope in the West and Islam in the East. That is why the flag of the Roman Empire has a double-headed eagle facing both the West and the East. Constantinople was a Greek, not a Roman city. Before Emperor Constantine renamed it in his honor the city was named Byzantium. The city of Byzantium was founded by the Ancient Greeks in 657 BC. Constantine renamed it in 330 AD, meaning the city was 987 years old when it was renamed.

For some people this is also National Anthem of Greece.
Not my view but is nonetheless very important anthem for Greece.
Jesus is the best one
The Byzantine Empire did not have a national anthem. This is an Orthodox hymn rending grace to the Virgin Mary for a victory over the Avars. Now play it at 1,25X speed...

My soul responds.
Amen

Senatus Populusque Romanus
This is not the anthem of the Byzantine empire, an "anthem of the Byzantine empire" never existed. This is a hymn to Maria, Jesus mother, Panagia Theotokos (The Blessed Virgin Mary) composed and sang all night long, standing up, by the people of Constantinoupolis the night the City (Constantinoupolis) was saved by Her from an invasion of the Avares
In reality it was the people's national/religious anthem/hymn to Theotokos/ Mother of God Maria , the protector of the medieval grecochristian state of Romania , known in West as Byzantium since 17th century.
@@areopolitis1 In Romania, a Neo-Latin language is spoken, not Greek. When Dacia was conquered in a genocidal war, it was colonized by Western Romans, including many veterans of that war.
So it is definitely a national anthem
@@Antonio_DG Romania was the original name of Byzantium used by the medieval Greeks . Today there is the european country of Romania with this name since 1866 , when the new independent state of Moldavia and Wallachia took the name Romania in memory of the ancient roman conquest of Dacia (the ancient name of Moldavia and Wallachia ). So modern Romania has nothing to do with byzantine Romania ... It's just a synonymy.
