UNBOXING A G&L / I'm Worried About This One

- I jumped on an awesome deal for a G&L, but after ordering it I began to worry that I might have made a big mistake. Was the deal too good to be true? The only way to find out is to get it out of the box and see.

LOL. Years ago, after watching Stacy Mitchhart play in Printer's Alley, I went to my local guitar store to buy a Blues Boy. They had one too, hanging right next to a Samick Greg Bennett Royale. I still have my Samick.
Seems like a good deal to me. I bought a G&L Ascari GT-90 "unplanned" when a Stupid Deal of the Day landed in my inbox. At $299, an all mahogany, set neck, and two P90 pickups seemed like a sweet deal. Out of the box, it was unplayable, so I had a pro setup done and now it plays perfectly. Even the guys at the tech's shop were like "wow" when they saw it.
Enjoy your Blues Boy, Mike!
I like it!! Glad the G&L turned out better than your fears. Sad they presented it as “new” when it was most likely a demo or at least hanging on the wall of their shop. I’m very much looking forward to the review, GMG.
I have 4 G&L guitars, they are all excellent. I also have a Blues Boy, in burst finish. They are all excellent. The bridge on the strat style is head and shoulders above my Fenders I think the only place G&L lacks is marketing and advertising. The fit, finish, design and the pickups are all top shelf. BTW, the humbucker in your guitar is four wire, and can be split. I added a push pull tone pot and gained more useful tones.
I have sold quite a few guitars on Reverb. You are not supposed to list anything as "New" unless it is truly brand new and you have all the original packaging, warranty cards and so on. In the case of this guitar, it should have been listed on Reverb as "Mint" and then they can describe the condition in the description as being in like new condition but is an open box and does not have it's original packaging.
Yes, you are absolutely correct.
I too, in the 80s, white, p90s, no idea where it went....
Thanks Grumpy, I’ve had my eye on a G&L for awhile now. Perhaps my next purchase will be one. Staying good my man, thanks for the video!
Nice looking guitar, cool vid! Looking fwd to the deeper dive 🤘
I changed pups on this one , because i have to change pups i have to . A set up n im good to go .. Thks for ur channel sir .
Congrats on the Bluesboy 😎👍
Nice guitar! No hang tags is another hint that it was probably on the wall at the store.
Great unboxing, completely agree with you on G & L guitars, it is ashame they are not recognized more. Both their domestic and import line. Alot of quality, sound and aesthetics for a reasonable price. Proud owner of a 2013 Fullerton Deluxe Legacy that I would not trade for nothing. More in my future.👍. Great job from a new subscriber🎸
Thanks for subscribing. I hope you enjoy the channel.
Sweet lookin' G&l
Looks good
I do "get" the guitar being shipped in a box from a different Guitar Maker (or Brand) especially if it was a guitar in stock at a Music Retailer. They typically can't hold onto boxes for all of the guitars that go up on their walls to showcase their merchandise. If it was from Sweetwater!... and not a Demo, then I would question it.
Any reputable retailer should ship any item that is sold as new in its original packaging. Imagine buying a Samsung refrigerator and having it arrive in a Maytag box. Clearly, this was a demo guitar that they listed as "New." In my book, that is a very questionable business practice. And, trust me, had it not been for the reduced price, I'd be raising holy hell with both the seller and Reverb. Consumers deserve better.
Love the color combo!
My friend, the camera doesn't come close to doing the finish on this guitar justice. It is absolutely beautiful. By far, the best lake placid blue I have ever seen. G&L nailed it.
I like it.👍👍
I can’t imagine you’ll be disappointed with that one, Grumpy. I’ve thought about one of those on many occasions. Good choice!!
I am a bit disappointed with the seller. When you buy a "new" product, you should expect to receive it in the original packaging with its case candy (if any) and hang tags and accessories (allen keys etc.). Shipping a "new" product in the wrong packaging without the stuff its supposed to come with. It was clearly a demo guitar and not a new from the factory guitar which the seller should have made known. Some may consider this nitpicking, but we the consumers should expect better, even if it is discounted in price.
The guitar, however, is a total winner. I'll be spending a great deal of time playing it and putting it through its paces before I do the review, but my first impressions are off the charts good.
That's a great color!
Yup, I am truly expressed.
I'm glad the guitar turned out to be good. Things looked a little dicey there for a bit - camera going nuts; packing peanuts everywhere! Seriously, though - speaking as a retired teacher, what happens is not nearly as important as how you react to what's happening. When you take unexpected things in stride like you did, the audience doesn't get hung up on them. As far as your reverb experience goes, I think this leads to a new question for sellers: is it new, or is it Guitar Center "new"?
"Is it GC New" is a perfect way to put it. That is my #1 complaint about GC and why I have, mire or less stopped buying guitars there. A demo (one that is out of the box and hanging on the wall) guitar is not, by any definition of the word, a new guitar. I think you have just coined new phrase. Thanks for watching.
Nice guitar though!
Is there the protective plastic still on the pickguard and other items..? Was probably a floor model or something.. Nice looking guitar.
Yup, the protective plastic was on it. And, yes, I'm sure it was a floor model. Luckily, it doesn't look like very many people ever tried it out. Their loss, my gain.
It is kind of odd and questionable why you ordered a GNL but yet it came in a box. It says ESP…..
That made me think of a couple things real quick
It pretty clear this was a store demo hanging on the wall. They can sell it as new because its not been previously sold. Over time, they lost the original box and had to use whatever they had laying around to ship it in. Although, I feel like this should be disclosed to the buyer, I'm not really all that disappointed because it was in perfect shape and I'm very happy with it. Of course, I've been kind of obsessed with tele shaped things lately, so that might have something to do with it. Thanks for checking out the video.
I thought G&L’s big selling point was being American made.
No, they've had an Indonesian import line for a while. The quality is quite good for its price range.
The Imported models have "tribute" in the name.
I’m starting to think you have a type…. Blue
Guilty as charged. 🤣👍
Is it me it’s just the shape of the headstock. Sorry I’m a freak like that. All headstock’s do that to me. G&Ls are good guitars.
I hear you. I felt the same way for a long time. That is, until I bought my Reverend which has a headstock shape ver similar to the G&L. That Reverend turned out to be one of the best guitars I've ever played. Now, that shape doesn't seem to matter to me at all. My advice is, if you are into Fenders, consider getting a G&L instead. You will, more than likely, get a much better guitar for less $$$.
