    The cool thing about WoW Classic Hardcore is that it's a timeless game experience. The journey IS the game. The end game is a dim, distant dream for 99% of the people attempting the Hardcore challenge. That focus on the levelling experience is exactly why it'll always be relevant.

  • @thegreattaiyou
    @thegreattaiyou 21 день назад +137

    I cannot understate how much I feel like Hardcore is the best at being "Classic" aside from the original 2004 launch.
    The permanent death aspect forces you to slow down, allowing for two things.
    First, the world gets the be the main character since you are able to take the time to explore it, and it also helps the world continue to feel big since you are always out in it, running on foot or taking 10 minute flight paths.
    Second, it allows community to flourish. You get to spend more time with people and therefore forge stronger social bonds in game. The thought of losing your tens or hundreds of hours of investment into your character makes you much more likely to play nice with others because one grumpy player can wipe your whole party.
    There's no rush to the endgame. There's stronger community.
    Theres always people doing lower level content.
    I don't know what else you could ask for in Classic WoW.

    • @nickv3085
      @nickv3085 21 день назад +7

      You’re absolutely right. I noticed this a while back…it’s exactly as you say, no mode does a better job of emulating that original vanilla experience. The community and feel of leveling is almost exactly the same as I remember it way back in 2004 as a teenager. It’s strange, and I wouldn’t have predicted it, but the permadeath just puts you back to taking it slow and smelling the roses, and fosters a fun leveling community that would otherwise not exist.
      And similarly to when the game first released and many of us were young, you may hear myths of crazy endgame activities, but will likely never see them! HC delivers a similar excitement around the “what if”, because things aren’t guaranteed.

      I know not everyone feels this way, but for me the limitation of one instance per day felt really really nice. Because people aren't chain dungeon farming and the risk of death, people are taking their time. You won't have tanks running around pulling the entire room, or DPS being overzealous and taking the tank out of his rhythm.

    I didn't plan to live this long when I started, but I'm full 9/9 T3 now. 5/5 T2.5 on my paladin. An alt of every class coming up on 60 as well...
    Classic era is my favorite version of the game, but the level of care and focus that every person on the server has while doing anything elevates every experience.
    The worst time for server pop was right after sod phase 1 came out. It feels like it's been steadily increasing since then tho.

      Eh. Streamers can very easily destroy this HC server with their x1000000 gold buying surge. There has to be some rules guidlines implemented, NO GOLD BUYING, This exact thing happened after a few months when xQc and Soda got caught buying gold when the HC servers launched.. Destroyed the economy for a while. I quit after that. That’s been a while ago I’m sure it’s recovered some.
      Then your average joe gets their accounts banned for buying gold. But not the streamers, they get away clean. streamer privilege in its finest form. Makes me so sick

    Hardcore was such an appeal because everything you do feel like it matters. Success is actually meaningful, and mistakes actually have heart pounding consequences. Traveling back to a city to make sure you're trained up and look for vendor upgrades is a big deal. Your gold actually means something in Classic and that only compounds the hardcore feeling.
    Is it disheartening when you die? Absolutely, but the journey is actually the entire part of the game - and after a short break, most people are willing to throw themselves back into it - because it's not the destination that matters.

  • @kriddius
    @kriddius 21 день назад +13

    Spot on with the reaction to seeing max level characters in raid gear! Once upon a time I'd see an epic mount raider and gush with awe. In retail everyone gets a participation award. It caters to the very worst players so everyone feels like a winner. "When everyone is super, no one will be"
    On hardcore, you see a max level player and you know they earned it. When you see a 60 in raid gear they've risked it all where a single mistake, from any one in the raid, could have lost it all and they came out on top. There's a level of respect there that's been absent in WoW for a very long time
    The community gets very small the higher you get in levelling too. bad players tend to filter themselves out and the bad apples are remembered and shunned by the rapidly diminishing player pool. Your actions and your behaviour carry weight. This hasn't been the case since the introduction of LFG/LFR
    I strongly believe hardcore is the best version of WoW for player community, comraderie and content

    Remember to "/join HardcaoreDeaths" for the Blizzard supported death notifications and turn on Death Alerts in the game settings. Only level 10+ deaths are shown. Deathlog is nice but not entirely needed.
    A good way to judge how many players are on a realm at any given time is by the Layer count. Each layer bumps a ~1000 concurrent.

    After playing WoW since 2004 I can say Hardcore is the most fun way to play the game. I believe one of the main reasons is the fact that there is no FOMO in this gamemode. In normal WoW, people get stressed when their friends are 10 levels ahead or are already playing endgame content = FOMO. In hardcore, your friends have as much chance of dying and having to start again, putting you ahead all of a sudden which basically nullifies the FOMO effect and causes people to be more chill when grouping or running dungeons. For me hardcore is the gamemode I will be playing from now on as a casual with only a few hours per week to play. Hope to see y'all in game!

I say it is strange for me because when it comes to WoW I can get all my friends in a "the band is getting back together!" and return to WoW for Retail, Classic, SoD, and they play for a good month before all dropping off one by one and I am playing alone. Hardcore was the one everyone and their mom refused to try so I went in alone for one and met so many great people and just had a blast! The only reason I left was because of SoD and after the fist level cap increase, they all quit and sadly I forgot all about Hardcore. I don't have a subscription anymore, so I can't post suggestions on wow forums, but if anyone is interested in raising this topic: I'd like to suggest implementing a dark-souls like feature in hardcore servers.
    If you die, the "Try Again" option will reset your character to brand new. However, if you manage to get that character back to the same level you were when you died, all your items will get send back to you.
    This would improve retention and incentivize people to try again, since not everything they did was lost, but it's just locked there waiting for them to reach their "personal best" again.
    We could even make a time limit, like: if you take more than 30 days to level back, the items are gone.
    Also, this would be a way to mitigate frustration for unfair deaths, as you know that all you have to do is get there again to retrieve your stuff.
    "What if I die while trying to reach my personal best?" -> Your personal best items are still there waiting for you. You just lose the items you had in the most recent attempt.
    "What if I want to choose which version of the items I want to keep?" -> I would suggest not going this direction. Implement and deliver something direct and simple, then collect feedback and see if it needs improvement.
    Until last year I was very active in WoW, and even if Hardcore interests me, the current implementation doesn't make me believe the risks are worth the reward.
    My character name is Malves on the Australian servers, yes I have several Malves spread across Oceania. (except from Frostmourne since someone sniped the name from me) 😂

      no, each character is a unique roll, and a unique story.
      i have died at 45, 44, 39, 27, 23, 16 - I also have made it to 60 on 4 classes. You get over dying, you realize that death is part of the game. The risk and the punishment makes every moment to moment gameplay 100x more interesting.
      When you die, you lose everything, thats the way it should be. You can continue playing that toon on era server if you want.

    I like all versions of WoW. I have plenty of guildies on Retail who feel the same way. This Awakened Season has been the perfect time for us to chill.. especially after the hell of Mythic Tindral and Fyrakk in Season 3. While many people just took the past few months off, others including me went back to Classic. SoD felt out of reach. Most of us are old and had our fill of Cata when it was current. So, almost all of us went to Hardcore. You hit the nail on the head that it's by far the best mode to just pick up and play. I've gotten to 60 as a Druid and Priest, and am in the mid 40s on a Paladin :)

    The thing that shocks me the most about hardcore is how many people from OUTSIDE of WoW it's brought in. Just this month I've met two people who started playing because hardcore sounded interesting to them and a friend suggested it. Two isn't a ton but it's a hell of a lot more than the 0 I've met in years of retail

    I love HC. Have got two characters to 60, and have had 4 tragically die before their time. It really is the best mode for those for whom the journey is the most important thing, not the destination. On side note, the deathlog addon isn't used so much now, as Blizzard have introduced their own death announcement option

  • @paulwalther5237
    @paulwalther5237 21 день назад

    One thing I liked about the add on was you could go “immortal” at 60 giving you something to shoot for. I know some people including a lot of streamers make getting to 60 look easy but not for me. I’ve never even done level 60 dungeons before. I’d do some noob mistake and die immediately I’m sure if I tried anything level appropriate at 60 😂.

      Besides, there's nothing to prevent you from using both. I just want to spread awareness of the Blizzard system, because every time someone dies there's multiple people asking how to see deaths.

    EU have weaker HC realms. SoD didn't really killed interest in HC. Laggy realms with constant hyperspawn on dynamically changing layers that caused characters to fall from taxy griffins to their death did more to kill popularity of Stitches and Nekrosh.

    ive dipped into tbc, wrath and cata. didn't stick around on any for long. i havnt had the time of life schedule to dedicate to raiding and they all are about endgame. i leveled 5 characters to 60 in classic so i even didnt enjoy official hardcore for a while compared to the addon back (leveling one "safe" character and funneling gold wasnt that exciting for me) recently came, doing self found only, and ive loved it, died to so many stupid things i would have survived if i have a few greens, even a green weapon. professions feel like they matter (only alchemy, engineering, fishing and cooking really but they all have some benefits (enchanting and tailoring early on for casters, skinning is a great money maker for your mount etc)
    if anyone doesn't have much time to play but wants a social game then i definitely recommend giving it a go, i only get an hour or so to play a day, the occasional longer day but even then not by much, and it feels more active than any other version of the game simply because you need to interact to do any group content, and after a certain point there aren't many people trolling as even getting to very early midgame is a long time investment, if you only do content as self found with other self found players then its even lower. ive had a few self found players not know how to approach some things but none of their (our my) mistakes have seemed malicious.
    games are meant to be fun and hardcore is the most fun ive had playing games for a while.
