Hi everyone!!! This is a bit different than my usual format! I'm trying a series of shorter videos rather than one long one, in an attempt to post more frequent content over the next few weeks! Lemme know what you think!
Why would you throw a fail painted model away??? There is always stripping the paint off the model and starting again, I do that all the time. "Totally Awesome" is my goto stripping solution its cheap, you can get it at Dollar Tree Stores
I really like the shorter video format. It is more condensed and focuses on one topic so it is easier to digest and follow. I like the long ones as well, but the short one is better. Thank you for your hard work!
You are an extremely interesting and talented lady, easy to listen to and wise beyond your years! Your ideas, colour schemes and painting are always exceptional and inspiring. As far as formats are concerned, I prefer longer version as I like listening and watching whilst I am painting and hate having to keep finding something else to watch - not easy after watching your channel! Keep on painting.
I'm convinced that the quick cuts to weird images in your videos is some sort of mind control scheme to turn us all into your unwilling minions. And I'm ok with that. Can't wait for the next one!
These are the first hobby videos that I've seen that are genuinely entertaining as well as informative. The contrast between your presentation style and the overlaid commentary/images is stellar. Top tier content!
These models look great and it's really refreshing to hear someone talk about the process of creating the colour scheme rather than just "paint colour a onto surface b". Subbed.
4 years later i just ordered my 2nd hand nighthaunts and can't wait to start painting these with my own vaporwave scheme. Thank yo so much for your insights. You always inspire me and got me back into the hobby after 20 years of hiatus 🖤🖤🖤
I used to paint miniatures years ago. I was taught "Old School" techniques like layering and using textures sponges. I think your technique would have put my miniatures beyond premo! I have been creating my own miniatures in polymer and will start practicing these techniques. I LOVE your videos because you actually instruct in a very clear and entertaining way. It's like having a friend show me something. I look forward to your future videos!
I like that you bring many graphic design elements into mini paintings. I like your editing. I like your dry humour. But most of all I appreciate that you are not another ''youtube happy idiot''. Please continue.
Explaining how much you're using references, you end up really creative. It's weird, you're brutaly honest about imitation and reusing other people's work... And in the end the process is way more creative than raw and random thoughts about color schemes. I personnaly admire this kind of intellectual honnesty.
Have been in the hobby for a year or less. I have seen two of your videos and they are really well made. The edition, the aesthetics, your voice, the pictures, the humor; you have such a unique, fun and logic way of teaching. Keep going and thank you for your beautiful job.
Really good advice. I do sometimes use a bit of colour theory but more often than not I search for colour palettes on Pinterest. Your nighthaunt are amazing!
I've recently discovered your channel and in watching only three videos (glaze/underpainting....) I've learned more than a year because of the way you explain it! Thank you so much for sharing your work and knowledge ✌️
Hi Dana. I really enjoy when you post new videos. I find you and your ideas very inspiring. This shorter format is great. But don´t forget the longer videos. Your videos on the Iron Golems was what got me in to model painting. As a total noob, the videos about glazing and zenithal has inspired me a lot, and with some awsome beginner models to show for it. Thank you.
I'm so happy I found your channel. I've just started getting into mini painting and am planning on getting my first starter pack of my own to paint soon. And I desperately want to make a neon fairy silver birch sylvaneth army that currently exists only in my head. Mini painting is not really the same skill set as other art I'm used to. You are a god send
Interesting techniques. This might just have re-awoken a long lost painter within. Tragically gave this up in my 20's. But I definitely think I'll be mastering painting and causing mayhem in the Retirement home, when that time comes. They don't know what's in store... Thanks for showing me this, which I'm sure has been around for a long time, but has been articulated to a wider audience through the medium of the internets.
we think very similarly about the prosses of picking a scheme. so I didn't get too much new insight but it was fun to listen non the less. I have always loved your nighthunt but with the story behind your decisions made them even better.
i liked this one. I mostly end up painting more from the concept art of whatever model im painting. I'll try a new scheme someday with the right model.
This is great advice, since the color wheel can "alone" make us rely too much on convention. I teach color theory and tell my students that most of what we do that makes sense to us is intuitive and ends up being right with the wheel anyway! It's especially important because colors like (very bright) Magenta and Cyan don't even show up in some more "traditional" wheels. Cheers
Very happy to see this series as I got my hands on a new box of Necromunda Enforcers. Now I need a colour scheme ^^. It is great that you have kept your own style (tone, pace, overlays, reference). Best regards
Yerp, half of the fun painting for me is the fossicking for reference material. It's a great feeling when the stars align and it clicks as a kinda fuzzy chaotic image which is brought into focus through the application of paint.
Thanks for sharing your process. I’m enjoying the jump cuts & random images sprinkled throughout the video. Can’t wait to see what you do with the Ossiarch Bonereapers & Sisters of Battle minis.
Just spent months figuring out a chaos undivided scheme lol. Glad there’s now a video to help people avoid that! EDIT: also I love the scheme for the nighthaunt! Reminds me of synthwave stuff
Followed the squig tutorial, it came out way better then I thought it would for my first attempt. I just painted an orruk brute I went for mostly the box colour with some small changes
I love that Vaporwave was the inspiration for the undead. Wonderful seeing seemingly totally discordant subjects coming together. Thanks for the great vids!
My prefatory order of painting paraphernalia will be here tomorrow, simply wanted to send you my thanks for making content of your craft. Must've watched your glazing tutorial ten times since you posted it, it was exactly the style and motivation I was looking for to enter the hobby. Stay Groovy nerd!
I love your fine art approach to miniature painting; it's refreshingly inspiring & makes me yearn to think differently. I find that very difficult because for so many years I approached miniature painting from dreary realism (belts are brown!) but thank you for the stimulation.
I just watched through most of your tutorials and this is the mini painting content I'm looking for. Your color schemes are fantastic, so I was really happy to see you made a video on how you chose your colors. I'm new to mini painting and don't have an airbrush, so I'm keeping my hopes up for more non-airbrush tutorials. I loved the one on glazing and am excited to give it a try. Great stuff, fantastic music, and fun to watch. Also, nice eyeliner. You just got a new patron.
Super useful video - I'm going to start making some folders for painting projects! Holy smokes those minis look incredible in the vapour wave scheme. Can't wait to see the rest of the series!
I enjoyed hearing about your thought process in this video, thanks for posting it. : ) I also really appreciate your attention to the openness that exists in different people’s artistic processes and goals.
I really like the style and approach you have with painting. I always look for folks that go against the grain or “norm” when painting. So many of the same on YT. Keep up the great vids!
Hi Dana! Your videos are awesome! In reference to your discussion around the 4:30 mark, renowned concept artist Feng Zhu refers to this accumulation of imagery as a visual library. I love that you mention that here, as it is important in any design discipline. Cheers!
I really love that the color scheme was inspired by vaporwave. Discovered I liked it last year and after seeing this I really wanna try it out again, but when I've tried it before I could never settle on a palette
I'm learnin'! Thank you for your content and work. Seeing your approach has helped me to see fewer boundaries around projects and schemes. I have no background in art, the idea of reference and hearing you talk through your process gave me some genuine "a-ha" moments. Grateful for your videos and am hopeful and excited for this channel's future.
I paint for relaxation and fun, it helps me focus away from my disabilities. tend not to do the box are I use my imagination. I think of a story and what happens and I paint that from my head. for example I decided to do a Hierarchy especially with shaman and fanatics. I don't really know much about the figures because I don't play the games but I read up about night goblins and discovered they were into Toadstools etc so I basically went on line and looked up different species of fungi and mushrooms there where some great colours I chose a few different ones and painted my night Goblins. They looked great and because they were an army ( for my son who does play these games) it took away the tedium of painting an army I had a lot of fun and my son and his friends loved them,
This video was really interesting! I've been lately getting into more "gaming" side over painting but your videos really encourages me to get back to painting and practice more!!
Spooky. I'm currently struggling with the colour scheme for my dungeonology minis. Dont like the box art colours. This will help. Thanks. Oh, and definitely interested in airbrush gradients. They looks cool. Not many videos on that subject, that I've seen
To to a thing for the purpose of showing off (for some people) is also a matter of learning or working on the skills needed. The funnest thing is thinking "I do X well. X would look good on this mini. I've never done X on that type of mini before." Yeppers, and you got that right about use. The Arm's Reach Law (especially with 3d printed stuff) if it's for tabletop use. Do your best possible work but don't get discouraged when it doesn't look good 2 inches in front of your face. It's meant to be viewed a few feet away on the table.... .... you don't put your nose on the canvas when looking at a vanGogh, you admire it from a few steps past it being in your complete field of vision. And inspiration! Never be afraid to try something new. It mughy suck or it might be awesome. You have to take the risk in order to learn, and learning is what makes us better.

I'm a big fan of both formats. So...um...yes.
I like the idea.. and the humor

Yes....but WHAT COLOR SCHEME unwilling minions???
We're becoming painting zombies
@@ScratchBashing I... I like taxes now... what is happening?!? ;)
That makes you a willing minion!

Your post modern night haunt are actually a really scary idea to me. Like... a ghost that is also a stand alone complex.
"examine your motivations for painting"
*starts down existential black hole reflecting why I even do anything*
Oh, tabletop vs. display. We're good.
Stuart Semple's Black 2.0 seems like a colour for you :D

I was just thinking "When is Dana Howl going to post a new vid?" And here it is! I love this video, keep up the good work!
First channel where I can find clear explanation of painting minis.
I just can't get enough of that color scheme you gave those ghosts! The way you balance the warm and cold colors through the gradient is so striking!
This video was just the push I needed to try painting outside of my comfort zone more.

I really enjoy the shorter videos, please keep 'em coming!
Really cool lore idea behind your Nighthaunt.
Also an awesome color scheme.
