- Character Options has a long and prestigious history of creating great Doctor Who figure sets. However, not all of their sets are made equal. In this video, we are going to discuss the oddities of the second (and final) 'Dalek Collector's Set'
All footage is the property of the BBC. Music by Mark Griskey
When I was younger, I actually found this set at a B&M. If I remember rightly, it was highly discounted. Weirdly, this was around 2011, so this thing must've been gathering dust in the back.
Now, my knowledge of classic DW was next to nothing, and I was hardly going to read the packaging. So, I spent a long time not knowing what these Dalek ranks were. So I just came up with headcanons.
Out of all the Daleks, I weirdly loved the Saucer Commander the most. I had this weird HC that they were some kind of super warrior Dalek, probably due to the size and colour scheme.
I sold the set a while back, but later (probably cos of sentimentality), I tracked down another Saucer Commander.
The B&M sets were reissued that were updated in a few areas.
I wondered what Dalek set number #3 i could imagine them probably releasing a Dalek supreme along with two different daleks a death dalek , Grey Destiny dalek , Resurrection Supreme it would probably be like that
Set 1 is still WAY more expensive than set 2 and thanks to the releases we will never run out of any of those 3 Daleks. And the weirdest CO sets Dalek wise are easily the B&M 7th, 8th and War Doctor + Dalek sets, which have 3 different variants of each set
Had this set as a kid got it around 2011 or so in B&M the figures sadly got destroyed very time as I was quite young but years later I bought this set again as well as dalek collectors set 1 both sets I love immensely and give me great nostalgia when I see them on my shelves
I've had both the Dalek collectors sets 1 and 2 during the era what I considered the best years for character options Doctor Who action figures which was 2007-2010 in my view, I got the the collectors set 1 for my birthday in 2008 and collectors set 2 for Christmas the following year, I preferred Dalek Collectors No 2 over No 1, as for me I just like the obscure Dalek design and variants that were released in this box set, over the obvious Dalek designs that were in set No 1, both were great parts of My Doctor Who action figure collection in the late 2000s, what a time it was to be a Doctor Who fan and figure collector!!😊
When I got the collectors set 2 I actually repainted the sauceer commander figure as I found it the least interesting
I'd slap you for that lol
Haha fr they seem to jus be *made* for converting into movie daleks lol
I definitely preferred the first set, but I never really thought of this as being particularly lackluster. It was perfectly natural to not be quite as exciting the second time around, but I still loved it.
I always found it interesting that the dalek collectors set 2 had 2 different releases the original release and the B&M rerelease a few years later with the day of the dalek supreme having different headlamps
The dome lights are the same bc they're both supposed to be the 70s "Mini Cooper" dome lights however the OG version of the sculpt didn't have any ridges. CO later fixed this however bc the OG dome light sculpt was modified to have ridges & that's what we got with the 2nd release of this set.
I completely get how weird it is to release a Dalek who was only present for about a 1/12th of a story in the second ever classic Dalek pack, that said, purely on an aestehtic level the Saucer Pilot design has always been one of my favourite Dalek designs (yes, I know it wasn't even intentionally designed that way and was just an unpainted Saucer Commander, not the point), the alternating silver and black just really appeals to me aestehtically for whatever reason. Really hope they re-release the Saucer Pilot figure sometime down the line cause I don't have the money for the current after-market prices from this set lmao
I can see the appeal of the Emperor’s Guard figure because it comes from an iconic story and was involved in a battle meant to wipe the species out.
The gold Supreme though shoulda been saved for a different set: maybe a Day of the Daleks set or release with Pertwee. In its place, I think I woulda put a Death to the Dalek figure in there.
The Saucer Commander is probably the most lacklustre variant in the set, coulda been replaced with an 80s Dalek figure.
I have very little Doctor Who merch; a toy of the Genesis of The Daleks Dalek drone, two Sonic Screwdrivers, a blanket that looks like the front of The TARDIS, and I think that's it; and I wasn't aware these Dalek models existed until I say this video, so my thoughts on these figures is "very interested, maybe I'll go buy one some day" , but I do have a habit of collecting figures and calling it an army because of the media I grew up with contains armies in them, and I've been dying to make my own Dalek army so there's that too.
Though I will admit I've been wanting a figure of a Dalek Emperor for a long time now simply because they just look so cool; speaking of Dalek Emperors, out of dumb curiosity, if modern Doctor Who brings back The Dalek Emperor, what do you think it should look like DB?
It's hard being a Doctor Who fan in Canada because we have to search pretty hard to find Daleks at affordable prices. Don't get me wrong, I love 3D Printing my Dalek Armies for wargaming, but I always reserve buying Daleks from overseas on Ebay as a special treat or occasion. I don't care what set it is. A Dalek is a Dalek, and that is enough.
The shelf warmer of Dalek toys
So glad I got both packs, really wanted any dalek figures I could get my hands on so brought them at the time 😂
set 2 was my firt classic line purchase ever, so its nostalgic for me
I happen to own the Saucer Pilot. I bought it separately at a comic-con, an it sits proudly alongside the Dalek Supreme and the two drones, all from "The Dalek Invasion of Earth". One Drone I bought separately again, and the Dalek Supreme and drone I got as part of the "History of The Daleks" set.
Giving a like for the KotOR 2 music
Doctor Who Character Options sets are my Roman Empire
I've actually got this weird set as you quoted 😂
I remember this set, my mum got it me one Christmas when I first got into Doctor Who, first figures I ever got and it's what got me into Classic Who my young self having no idea it existed at the time.
SET 1 is so fucking rare cause dr who youtubers who do stop motion have over 100s of these
Got this one as a kid, heavily discounted about 2011
My aunt goes: why the hell do you want this?? It'd just random Daleks
Six months later they were all snapped to pieces, specially the Saucer Dalek with its really long arm 😭
You're right though, a very sickly looking colour scheme
There's nothing like good old KotOR music in a Dalek video.
i got a dalek collector set 2 a while ago its just been sitting there most of them broken but recently I got another unboxed which is pretty nice.
I have this set!!!
Still have these and I absolutely love them!
I will say, the original "Emperor's Guard" Dalek is possibly my favorite sub-type of Dalek (aside from the Special Weapons) due to how it feels like its unique, and very noticeable; in fact if I ever make my own Dalek, I'd probably pick the Supreme Dalek from Remembrance OR the Emperor's Guard!
Love set 2. My saucer commander is my favourite doctor who figure as well as him being my favourite Dalek design, and my figure of the gold supreme has a rare deformed sucker, making him very unique.
I actually liked that gold Dalek from Day and Frontier.
I bought that one, a very good set. Waiting for #18 Resurrection to come out now.
I liked it as I thought of this as a commander set.
Got the first and the second 15 years ago that was
Unrelated but what do you think of librarian-bot's dalek history series on Deviantart?
good use of music from KOTOR (2?)
Awesome vid
All the original dalek toys
And dalek bumps can you please make dalek question 15 about daleks in classic thunderbirds and Gerry Anderson props from doctor who
22:57 no, but I have collectors set 01 😏
Is it not possible they chose ones only collectors/completionists would want for the "Collectors Set #2"?
@@ImmortalAbsol I suppose that was most likely the thought process behind it, but its still an odd selection compared to the 3 from Set 1
@dalekbumps especially bc none of them are army buildable unless u jus use the Emperor's Guard to upgrade OG Chase & Pyro Flame daleks lol
@@PedroS1400 I can tell you from experience that they're great for army building, the gold Supreme can be repainted into grey Daleks, The Saucer Pilot can be easily repainted into an Invasion Earth Drone, and simply repainting the Emperor's Guard dome silver turns it into a standard '60s Drone. Getting multiples of this set when it was cheap was how I got so many classic Dalek customs
@dalekbumps that's what I mean tho apart from repainting the Emperor's Guard dome silver, the other customs u mentioned are all kinda big jobs & most ppl wouldn't wanna risk doing them lol. Besides if u wanna make the Day Supreme into a Destiny or 80s drone, ur gonna need new dome lights & eyestalks for that lol. Army building 60s drones tho is good when u got some clear yellow paint for the dome lights & a good silver spray for the dome haha
The set is strange
I think dr who toys have gone down hill only being in b&m if you’re lucky
@@baggin. the distribution has definitely slumped but the figures themselves are of a much higher quality than they were back in the Toys R Us days
It's basically a tradeoff of quality over quantity
Nah, L
@@dalekbumpsthey are high quality but that's *only* when Al Dewar ain't pissing around with using the wrong parts & making the colours completely wrong for no reason like he did with HOTD 3-5, the Death daleks shoulders, Death Zone dalek using all the wrong parts & the colour of the so called "Renegade" from last year haha
@@PedroS1400 I get what you mean but errors like that happened in the Toys R Us era too, remember the original Dalek sculpt from 2006-2008 with the chunky gunstick, incorrect number of slats and the wide base?
There's also the initial Cult of Skaro set that shipped without the eyestalks painted, the incorrect neck mesh of the Gold Supreme from Set #2, and the oddly pale Destiny of the Daleks drones from the Tom Baker 4-pack
@dalekbumps true but considering how they were CO's *earlier* work, they'd at least be *understandable* as *genuine mistakes* but in B&M, all of those figures have been *done before* and Al Dewar has said in interviews that he "doesn't like devaluing someone's collection" so he desperately tries to make *every* re-release a *"variant"* and doesn't care if its accurate or not
Least favourite is almost certainly the original Destiny of the Daleks Davros set. Never bothered with it.
What's this music from?
Try buying the original set releases now for £20!
@@lepterfirefall yeah the price increase has been extremely sharp - I remember seeing them on shelves in Forbidden Planet for £17.99 each
@lepterfirefall I mean it ain't *that* bad bc u *can* still get them for £25 - £30 boxed bc they're *common AF* like they ain't rare at all🤣
@@PedroS1400 only the b&m re-release.
@lepterfirefall ye but the History of The Daleks Day Supreme simply *embarrasses* the OG DCS2 versions & the TRU & History of The Daleks Emperor's Guards are more accurate than the OG DCS2 versions lol
@PedroS2001 that's true...but has no effect on the value of the first releases.
At least those Emperor's Guards are *really* useful if u got OG Chase & Pyro Flame daleks bc they got the *correct hemisphere colours & eyestalk* so that makes them perfect for fixing OG Chase & Pyro Flame daleks, simply by jus swapping their domes & guns onto the Emperor's Guard shells & also swapping the Emperor's Guard eyestalk into the Chase/Pyro Flame dome! As for the other being "rare" thats never gonna happen lmao bc with the re-release of this set, that makes them even more common & cheaper than they already were lol.
