Hi Martin! Great video and tips! I also paint bikes and my spray pattern is; headtube, bottom of bottom tube to top of bottom tube, bottom of top tube to top of top tube, then seat tube. Time to change it then

I am still using the spray can as this is an easy way of spraying but have the right tools to do a paint job with a spray gun. The only thing I am very uncomfortable with is the measurement for the paint and clear coat. Is it like pastry where everything should be perfectly measured? Do you have a video on this? Thank you!

Let's say you don't have the option to thin out your 2k clear coat (Spray cans) and you get the orange peel effect. Do you wet sand the surface and if so, what grit sandpaper do you use?

Hey Martin, great video as usual. I have a question: I sanded a sram red 22 crankset to remove the original clear coat and stickers. Now I have to clear coat it and I want a visible carbon fibers look.
Can I spray acrylic 2k clear coat directly on the carbon (I think there was no primer on the original crank because it went away really quickly) or it is crucial to put a transparent primer? Thank you
I use primer. You can do what ever you want.

I am getting ready to put the clear coat on a Norco Six full suspension frame I am working on. Just waiting for the clear coat in the mail. I am really worried about the inside sections and the nooks and crannies of the frame. This is my second frame paint. The first was based off ETOE's DIY spray paint a bike and I royally screwed up the clear coat on that bike.
dannyslea I done a couple bikes. I got a practice alum frame from bike shop they were throwing out. I stripped and painted it then tried different clears. Some work to rest strip but I got practice in paint gun setup and technique. Also used some paint but better than my good frame. Also Fast hardener. Slow and medium flow too much and caused runs. Hope this helps.

No because you don t have control is very hard to lay down clearcoat from spray can...atomization is poor

I have a question regarding sanding clear coat. I just sanded my 2K spray Max clear (after a 2 month cure) and it resulted in some cloudy spots and also areas that are now sticky to the touch. Is this normal?
I was going to go 1200, 1500 and 2000. But now I'm concerned that I damaged the clear. Should I push on? Do I need to reclear?
You killed the clear coat and have to repaint again.

Clear coated the frame last Friday and .. what a wonderful disaster!!! Everything you talked about magically happened to me ... you either jinxed it for me or your were spaying me as that chicken dance is my secret ritual! Jokes apart the low temperature (1 degree celsius) ruined everything. The iron frame was so cold that the clear coat was literally dripping off the frame!! What would you do in this case? Happy to send you a photo of the frame and runs for you to roast me :D
Hi Martin, what pressure you use for clear coat? i have a similar as the prize 150cc spray gun. I´m your fan
I recommend around 2bar for most common spray guns. Please make sure not to use the cheater valve on the spray gun if you are not a pro.

Hey Martin! What do you do when you have to paint a carbon frame in clear (like the one in the video) and there are some "white" parts? i think is like glue or something like that. I have an epic s-works 2018, I striped it following your steps and there are some parts in "white" mostly on the bottom of the down tube. Do you cover it with something ?

Hi Martin - you’re amazing, and I’m just starting to do my own bike painting for my kids etc (for now). I’m using HOK paints - I noticed here you wet sand, but this is primer. Wanted to confirm you would also wet sand a painted surface? 1200 grit? Thanks!
Yes do it! 600 grit!
@@ETOE Hmmm...I just tried the wet sand and ended up taking off some of the paint on the thin edges of the motorcycle parts I'm painting....must not have sprayed enough in the first place I guess. I was definitely being gentle with the paper too.

I have painted first layer of clear coat and the second layer of clear coat after 24 hours of drying .Is that fine .
No it`s not ok. Worst case is that the second layer has no bond with the first one and will peel of.
What pressure do you run in your lph-80 when clearcoating?

@@ETOE I've watched that video as most of your great videos. I know that the datasheet for the gun says 1 bar and i run the 1,2mm nozzle needle setup but i think that 1 bar sometimes isn't enough. I have an industrial type compressor so the airsupply isn't a problem. I was just curious if you follow the spec or if you have your own sweetspot.

@@TomasHedlund16 I am no where near as qualified as Martin to respond to this question but I also have a new LPH 80 and I find I get better consistency at a higher pressure, 1 bar is great for saving air but its a very fine balance to avoid a dry finish, when I saw The Gunman's review , he recommended 29 PSI as he does for most of the guns he show cases, I thought that was way too much so I run at around 18-22 depending on base or clear. I had so many different results using the lower pressure I have now treated myself to a Devilbiss SRi Pro Lite and that is ow my dedicated tool for clear.

Same like for my bigger guns. Makes no sense for me to by a small compressor.

1.there is no basecoat on the video..you go from primer to clearcoat.....yes we sand the primer...600-800 grit...we never sand the basecoat unless there is a blemish or something and we have to put another coat on...!!
2. on other video you put 3 layers of clearcoat...and between the second and the third you sand with 800 paper...then you spray the final one...its something i ve heard, never tried it though ...you put 2 layers, sand it with 1000-1200 and then the final one
3.there are 2 main categories of clear coat....the 2k with the hardener and without it....its a world difference...the 2k has amazing strength and if you are experienced with a good gun ..an iwata sata devilbiss bla bla...the result is mirror finish..you dont have to sand and buff....with the softer ones ...the usual ones we get on cans...not the 2k cans you ve showed...you need work to come to a descent level...the key is to put as many thin layers as possible ...4 or 5...so you dont risk when you sand and buff later...you let it cure completely...and by completely i mean days ...till there is no odor ..smell...then you wetsand with 800-1000 up to 2000 grit...finally you get a fine compound and start...till you see your face on the surface!!
and you were a little unfair with the mini spray gun....its price is equivalent to 2 spray cans....!!!!
