  • In this video we showed how to setup keyboard shortcuts in the TWS trading software by Interactive Brokers. We covered the basic process of programming your hotkeys and talked about some functions that are missing in the platform that we automated using a third party macro tool.
    This software does have some limitations however this guide should be a good starting point for those who are just getting into it. The macro software we used is Pulover's Macro Creator, there is no affiliation with them, we had only been using it at the time this video was published.

Thanks for not jumping right in to configuration without first coverage of this critical step. Hey Chris, you're doing an amazing job and your videos save us an enormous time. A huge thank you for this.
    I am intrigued by your keyboard with those six programmable keys to the left though. They obviously offer a lot of options for hotkeys set-up.
    Do we really have to be programming knowledgeable in order to use them or they're just like any others keys for that purpose.?
    I found a brand name on Amazon : Corsair. Is your keyboard a Corsair, just asking before ordering?

    • @VerrilloTrading
      @VerrilloTrading  3 года назад

      Hi Michel thanks for the kind words. This keyboard is a very old model made by the company Razer. They actually don't make them anymore with the 5 extra programmable buttons. There are little pads you can get that can program custom functions, all of it is easy to do with the software they include normally. Right now I only use a handful of hotkeys for trading, most of my work is done by clicking the mouse honestly. All the best.

It seems the lot size (number of shares) needs to be set up in the hotkeys which is so annoying if you are trading various stocks with a range of prices. Surely there is a way to set the share size in the order entry panel and then use a hotkey to execute the order at ask price.

      The best way around this would be to set order presets for individual tickers. This way it will default to your ticker preset when you prompt a new order on a specific stock.

    Great video. Do you still use IBKR hot keys for stocks or have you decided to fully integrate Sierra with IBKR (executing from Sierra directly). I currently trade futures through Sierra/Denali/Teton, but want to be able to trade stocks from time to time, but not sure what the proper setup would be with Sierra + IBKR as broker.
    I"m thinking about using Sierra for the data feed, and mimicking what you've done with IBKR hotkeys, since there is a lot of talk about Sierra not working well with IBKR with full integration. Would be a bit annoying to have to click on the TWS chart, but probably could get used to it.
    I'm curious how you currently manage this. Are you fully integrated, or do you keep TWS on the side, so you have to click on TWS to execute while using Sierra for your charting / data?
    hopefully I worded that correctly. Keep up the great work

    Hi Verillo, thanks for this - you have some really cool tips.
    Just last week I had a trouble clicking through buy/sell/limits using just the Order Entry Window and the Option Chain Strategy Builder and with price moving soooooo fast. and I just recall that you had these TWS videos for quick swift navigation and execution in IB. It looks like I need hot keys to be able to react fast enough either via Chart Trader, or the other Windows like BookTrader (Market Depth).
    How do you react to the quick speeds of buying/selling options during the day? In order to have quick fills to buy / sell, when do you use use Buy/Sell Limit Orders with some offset of the bid/ask price? Or, Market Orders (+ some Algos to help with fills)?
    Do you set Bracket Orders for stop loss and profit taking for options if say the options is a full day swing or an overnight swing position? (i.e. earnings ah)
    As per your other video for Trading View vs. IB Chart Trader, for Day Trading Options, do you primarily use Trading View to look at price action of the underlying whether they reach certain levels, and the option position buy/sell issued in IB is just done through hot keys?
    Is it possible to have IB Chart Trader on the underlying and if the price hits a certain level, and set it up to trigger an option buy/sell? (if it's possible would you recommend this?)

    • @VerrilloTrading

      Hi, the only way this would happen is if you have an improper input set in the hotkey you programmed. You probably need to specify the limit price or try a different input. I have encountered similar problems when trying to select different inputs for the limit price. Try different ones and make sure they work properly in the demo account first.

    Hi Verrillo, thanks for the video. Quick question: I setup TWS based on your instructions but every time I use the hotkey, it asks me to pick a price and consequently the order never goes straight to the exchange. To me, it kinds of kills the purpose of hotkeys. I have been looking at various options to solve this issue but have not been able to. Any thoughts? Could it be because I have not yet subscribed to the live data feed?

    • @VerrilloTrading
      @VerrilloTrading  3 года назад +1

      It could be because there is no live data feed so it doesn't know which price to put in your order. In the way your configured the hotkey make sure you select a valid option in the second box. I normally use limit order on the bid.

      I'll be honest with you at the time of making this I was obsessed with hotkeys. About a year later I've realized it's not as important to have a million buttons. There are only a few that are essential. cancel all orders, flat out your position, change lot size from 1-3. The rest can be done by clicking on DOM which I find is more effective.

For example, an order worth 1k regardless of stock. I mean I am an intraday trader and I would like to make with one button the buy order in worth of 100k, whatever stock I am currently watching. Next question would be, can I make a sell hotkey for example sell 50% of my position?

      The default will probably be SMART unless you specified a different default order routing. Smart routing is an algorithm that scans multiple exchanges for potential price improvement and availability of shares. That is an oversimplification of what it does. It basically saves you the trouble of knowing which exchange ECN to point your orders to.

      Yes you can add a stop, target or both to an existing position. In TWS if you right click on your existing position from the portfolio window or any window that displays the position. You can find it under Trade > Create Target/Stop Exit Bracket. I do not know if there is a hotkey that can perform this function. If it is not in the hotkey selection menu, it is not there and would need to be custom coded.

    THanks for lot of useful info on Hotkeys. Let me know if you have hotkeys to manage option positions. Like in Lightspeed, you can configure hotkeys to exit full/half/quarter positions. So for example, if you have bought X number of call options. Now you want to sell half (X/2) then you can configure one hotkey. To sell 25%, we can use another hotkey. In case half or quarter is not a whole number, software automatically nearest whole number and close the positions. Can something similar can be one in IB?

    • @VerrilloTrading
      @VerrilloTrading  3 года назад

      There are ways to do that but not in the way you say. (25%-50% of position) The best way would be to set your size increments and then use a hotkey to change the size of the order to buy or sell a certain amount. It's very easy once you get the hang of it. Cheers.

    • @VerrilloTrading
      @VerrilloTrading  4 года назад

      You define your own risk by where you put your orders. You can use a traditional stop or a stop limit order to attach to a parent buy or sell to limit your loss. 2. Macro, yeah you can essentially automate anything although you need to be able to record it in a logical way and teach the computer how to do that. It's programming at that point.

    Fantastic video, much better than those produced even by IBKR, you have really mastered this. I use hot keys in TWS to buy or sell X number of shares. But every time I do this, I have to work out "how many shares can I buy with my usual $10k position size?" etc. Can I do this using Hot Keys? I don't see the option to buy or sell X money's worth of shares, I only see the option to buy X number of shares. I can do this on TWS at the top of the regular mosaic window, selecting USD instead of quantity of shares, but it's really fiddly to set up and I'd much prefer to do it with a hot key. Thanks if you can help :-)

      Thanks for the kind words. One option is to create presets for each ticker symbol individually so it remembers your approximate position size for those symbols. Using USD instead of shares is supported but it will be using the fractional shares system which is IB's own network, dark pool you could call it. I couldn't comment on it much but probably staying with shares is easier and you will get filled more often.
