2024 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium for me just a few weeks old. Most satisfying vehicle I’ve ever purchased for build quality. I have a 2023 Bronco Squatch which is fun, but the old school Toyota feel is so good. I’d also expect to easily pay $15k more for a base 1958 Landcruiser.
I have that same 4Runner from the '22 model year. I'd still go 4Runner between the two. You're getting a TRD Pro for the same money as a base trim baby LC. The 4R has a nice simple engine that will last forever, the whole vehicle has proven reliability and resale value, the 4R has a pet friendly rear window that goes down, softex seats vs cloth, I even think the 4R has a nicer looking interior.

Between the two I would go with the 4 Runner still. I like to keep the engine size more in line with the size of the car even if the smaller motor makes more power. Now make the choice between the 4Runner TRD pro out and the new Lexus GX would probably be the GX. But I don't like to buy the first year of anything so probably still the 4 Runner
As of today I’ll go for the new chassis / drive train of the LC. Now ask the same question next year when they are on the same chassis then that will be a much more interesting question.
Definitely! Considering how close to the current 4Runner is to 55k, it'll be interesting what they do with the new one to make it worthwhile to buy over the Land Cruiser. Considering a TRD off-road is about 50Kthese days, why not step up to the Land Cruiser?
This was obviously very purposeful given the tandem launch of the Lexus GX. So now you have 3 LC and 6 GX models...and that doesn't even consider the 2 GX Hybrids that land in the US next year. I think Toyota has done a great job relaunching the LC/GX and provides plenty of optionality. Plus, a loaded GX increased in price by ~$10K but is still $20K cheaper than the old LC.
There's literally no point in buying a new Land Cruiser over a new 4Runner they share the same platform the same engine and basically all the same things they're no more capable than one another just absolutely stupidity if you ask me
Great video! Sorry - but mentions of old school and the LC70 remind me of what many of us want - a simple and LC70-like and NO SCREENS. The new Land Cruiser 250 looks great but that digital dash will force me to keep my LC 200 as long as possible. The current 4Runner is looking better and better.
I am glad my desire for the 4Runner waned when I stopped watching 4Runner RUclips videos. I bought an Outback and never looked back. I am patiently waiting 4 years to see what will come out.
An Outback Wilderness with a sunroof is $42k and you are in 4R territory. For $5k more, there is the 4R Offroad Premium. Better gas mileage sure, but so much more offroad with the 4R, or even a Tacoma for less.
I don't really buy the whole "It's half the price of the old one" since this is the 250, which is the follow up to the 150- not the 300, which is the follow up to the 200. Considering that the 4Runner shares a lot in common with the old 150 (much of the interior is identical, and the engine was used in Prados for years), this looks like a pretty big price increase disguised as a price cut in the North American market. Heck, you can't even get a third row in the new 250- something the Prado / 4Runner have offered for years. I guess we'll see where everything lands after the new 4Runner is announced, but I can't help but wonder if that won't just be based on the Fortuner. Fitting, given the relationship it has to the Hilux, and the 4Runner's Hilux Surf origins.
I’d go for a 2016/17 4Runner TRD Off Road for 2 reasons 1st it’s not available where I live (UK) and while the LC will be available soon with the diesel I think the 4Runner looks better. 2nd I wouldn’t buy a new 4runner as it has too many electronics which is why I’d get the last year (16/17) before the nanny state was fitted
Be really awesome to see some dog harness anchors in the rear of 4 runner and bring back the tailgate, the 5th door or rear hatch doesn't do it for me ,also man give me front, rear and center lockers please ,rear is nice but all options is better, oh its crazy that car manufacturers can't sell direct to consumers what the heck is up with that
I’m going to save my money this year and buy the 4 runner Trd pro. Turbo engines are prone to failure after 80,000 miles plus. I know this due to owning a few modern euro cars.
Bronco is a sick ride. I got my Heritage Edition three weeks ago and it is such a cool thing to go about in! Gonna try to get it ready for some proper off road adventuring come early summer.
If they're the same money, LC is an easy pick. The 4Runner was dated the day it came out. It's too thirsty, too slow, and somehow too small on the interior. But they won't be the same money, the LC will be marked up a few thousand and the 4Runner will probably be favorably discounted soon.
The 4Runner makes sense for those of us that want some equipment without getting into the 50k range. Also those of us who don’t want the slightly bigger footprint and a more dedicated off roader. Even the new gen coming soon, it will be smaller and generally cheaper. You can get a fully loaded sr5 for mid 40’s or less and a fully loaded trd off road still for under 50k. Also the new Land Cruiser probably doesn’t actually get 27 per gallon. That would be a big difference maker though if it did
There is a fact that is undeniable, They Cut the Price in Half because it was supposed to be the next 4 Runner. What they did was call it a Land Cruiser and charge $15K more starting price than the 4 Runner. It's a let down for 4 Runner fans and a money grab by Toyota. The only evidence you need to know is that it's Prado based like the 5th Gen 4 Runner. Toyota screwed the 4 Runner faithful by doing that.
@@IsmaelMartinezPRI don't know where you got your information from but there's a whole lot that's wrong and inaccurate with this post. The LC was never intended to be the 4 runner. Whoever told you that was wrong.
What i love on my 16 is the Smode driving it. Only those that say its slow never learned the capabilities of the truck when you clearly shift your gears longer and get a quicker throttle response. Just like the ones that bought automatic sports cars saying that they were slow.😂
They didnt cut the price in half, they just took the Prado into the American market and painted it like the real landcruiser which is the LC300 thats available worldwide
I called my local dealer today. I won’t say what city/state so they won’t be incriminated. The Salesgal told me that they have zero information. They don’t know when they are getting vehicles or how many. She also said, yes, they will be selling them for above MSRP. I told her to keep me posted but that I won’t pay over MSRP. So….no news and bad news only so far.
I had a 2016 4Runner and they have changed nearly nothing. I mean... it ain't broke. I loved it but damn. The 6th Gen can not get here fast enough. I would not spend 55k for the 4Runner when I could get a Land Cruiser. But I am 46 now so... maybe that has something to do with it. The 4runner is the 25 year old and the Land Cruiser is the 45 year old. Nearly the same capabilities but full-time 4WD and ventilated seats are what I enjoy now.
2024 4runner hands down with naturally aspirated V6, no turbos, not a hybrid, iron clad reliability. Who cares about new looks in a parking lot, technology touch screens, and round headlights?
Your comparison was “if you had $55k to spend”. The way you spec’d the Land Cruiser with the off road package you’d be way over $55k. And by the way, I’d take old school bullet proof mechanical any day and twice on Sunday rather than high tech and computerized.
Our local Toyota dealer has NEVER asked for more than MSRP, nor do they play any games with accessories etc. you order it and the price you see is the price you pay p, less $400 because they don’t even ask the maximum dealer fee as per the Toyota pricing on the website. Right now if you get a 23 or 24 Tundra you get $2,000 minimum, off the price! They sell the Tundra TRD Off-road like crazy locally and in the SR5 guise, it’s possibly the best deal of all 4 of the full size trucks available in Canada. Nissan discontinued the Titan back in 2022 here!
I bought an 80 Series and spent money to replace everything including rebuilding the engine. I now have a new car below $40K and it is way cooler than both of these cars

I've had my 4Runner Sport Edition 4.7-liter V-8 for 20 years. It was the best $36K I ever spent, and I am not looking forward to replacing it in the future.
I'm a Toyota guy. I'm keeping my FJ and replacing the wife's MDX. As someone who's always wanted a Land Cruiser but has hated the styling for the past 3 decades and also someone who balks at 93k for a car. Well, with this more 80's styling and a lower price point we're considering ordering one from the factory. Though this will be my first time so good knows what that process is like.
This is something I don't think people appreciate enough. Think about the fact that the 4Runner has been practically unchanged since 2010. There are hundreds of thousands of these vehicles and all with the same engine, transmission, axles, etc. For people who buy used vehicles, these are a gold mine. For the next thirty years, there will be nearly an unlimited supply of parts for these things. I'm talking about body, frame, drivetrain stuff that will no longer be offered by Toyota or even aftermarket. Used OE parts will be available for many years. You can swap so many things between the model years it'll be a vehicle that can be repaired or refreshed. Just think, someone already wore out the seats in their 2010 SR5, go find a set of used seats from a 2020 model that's been totalled if they aren't damaged. That's just an example. But people are missing the value of a vehicle that's been in production for 14 years almost unchanged. When my wife and I eventually buy a 5th gen 4Runner to replace daily use of our 2003 4th gen, we plan to keep it going as long as possible. There should never be a shortage of 5th gen 4Runner parts thanks to the long production run of them. Toyota made the right decision keeping the model the same all these years. Honestly, I think they should keep it around at least one more year and let it hit 15 years unchanged. 😂
@@toyotas4ever there are stories of people with newer vehicles that have had to wait many months for parts. Take a model like the current venza, discontinued and a short model run what will parts availability be like on that vehicle?

Definitely! Considering how close to the current 4Runner is to 55k, it'll be interesting what they do with the new one to make it worthwhile to buy over the Land Cruiser. Considering a TRD off-road is about 50Kthese days, why not step up to the Land Cruiser?
The cut the price in half by cutting the size and features ;)
Exactly what I wanted them to do.
It's call rebadging. They are all Prados
Half the engine too
4 Runner
I can't afford a $1200.00 monthly payment so I'll be buying a used 10 year old Corolla.
I’d go for a 2016/17 4Runner TRD Off Road for 2 reasons
1st it’s not available where I live (UK) and while the LC will be available soon with the diesel I think the 4Runner looks better.
2nd I wouldn’t buy a new 4runner as it has too many electronics which is why I’d get the last year (16/17) before the nanny state was fitted
Be really awesome to see some dog harness anchors in the rear of 4 runner and bring back the tailgate, the 5th door or rear hatch doesn't do it for me ,also man give me front, rear and center lockers please ,rear is nice but all options is better, oh its crazy that car manufacturers can't sell direct to consumers what the heck is up with that
4-Runner
I’m going to save my money this year and buy the 4 runner Trd pro. Turbo engines are prone to failure after 80,000 miles plus. I know this due to owning a few modern euro cars.
I like them both. Was considering a 4Runner but want the newer tech. Leaning towards a Bronco at the moment.
Bronco is a sick ride. I got my Heritage Edition three weeks ago and it is such a cool thing to go about in! Gonna try to get it ready for some proper off road adventuring come early summer.
Between these two: 4Runner. In general: Land Cruiser all day! My 70 series Troopy is on another level.
If they're the same money, LC is an easy pick. The 4Runner was dated the day it came out. It's too thirsty, too slow, and somehow too small on the interior. But they won't be the same money, the LC will be marked up a few thousand and the 4Runner will probably be favorably discounted soon.
Don't expect good fuel economy in the non hybrid version.
@@timalan7406 I don't expect good, just not-terrible.
4Runner every time. Not even worth the debate.
Just prefer RWD for everyday cruising, part time 4x4... AWD may well be preferred by others.. would probably go TRD ORP for value + kdss..
That would be a big difference maker though if it did
4Runner is a dog
There is a fact that is undeniable, They Cut the Price in Half because it was supposed to be the next 4 Runner. What they did was call it a Land Cruiser and charge $15K more starting price than the 4 Runner. It's a let down for 4 Runner fans and a money grab by Toyota. The only evidence you need to know is that it's Prado based like the 5th Gen 4 Runner. Toyota screwed the 4 Runner faithful by doing that.
@@BC08What's wrong with being man's best friend?
@@vex-nh Dog in the negative context
@@IsmaelMartinezPRI don't know where you got your information from but there's a whole lot that's wrong and inaccurate with this post. The LC was never intended to be the 4 runner. Whoever told you that was wrong.
If the LC & new 4runner have the same engine, I'd buy the LC.
If the upcoming 4runner is all motor, then 4runner is gonna be joining to my TRD trucks.
What i love on my 16 is the Smode driving it. Only those that say its slow never learned the capabilities of the truck when you clearly shift your gears longer and get a quicker throttle response. Just like the ones that bought automatic sports cars saying that they were slow.😂
Still running an 07 4Runner. They just work and keep working. 4Runner all day.
They didnt cut the price in half, they just took the Prado into the American market and painted it like the real landcruiser which is the LC300 thats available worldwide
Was this pushed to compete with the bronco?
Got the 2020 4R ORP and would love to get the latest year before the 5th gen so I can have one last as long as possible 👀
I would pick the landcrujser for modern safety standards, but definitely aware that it’s not built to the same standards as a 4R
Like always guys great job 👏,Toyota lovers need a baby 4Runner,smaller and cheaper, that old school look is classic ❤
I'm really tempted to get a 4Runner.
I went back in time and voted with my wallet: Bought a 2021 4R TRD Pro.
Everybody is saying 4runner, me too🤠! I think Toyota can sell this vehicle for next decade as well 😀
2024 4runner hands down with naturally aspirated V6, no turbos, not a hybrid, iron clad reliability.
I'd go for the 6the Gen runner. All the good stuff from the LC and the 4 runner
300000 miles strong on my 4 runner only thing I changed was my av compressor and condenser 😊
Where are they😮😊
What and where this dealer you talking about? Planning to buy tundra trd pro sooner or later. Im from Alberta though
@@michaelasio2501 - the dealer is in Southern Alberta, Canada.
Lethbridge, we didn’t get a Toyota though. The guy we were dealing with is named Scott. Nice guy.
@@C10sRule thank you so much!
I bought an 80 Series and spent money to replace everything including rebuilding the engine. I now have a new car below $40K and it is way cooler than both of these cars
I have a 2020 4Runner. That being said I also want that new land cruiser, but I’m sure as hell not getting rid of my 4Runner when I get it in a few years or so
I love the old 4runner reliability with the new landcruiser looked
I've had my 4Runner Sport Edition 4.7-liter V-8 for 20 years. It was the best $36K I ever spent, and I am not looking forward to replacing it in the future.
Can't wait to see the after market front bumper will look like
I'm a Toyota guy.
Land Cruiser with round headlights & new tech! Also, the 4Runner’s seats are not comfortable enough and less adjustment options.
The tried and true will have parts availability which today’s world with supply issues means a lot.
Option C - TRDORP for 50k.
It took me months to decide to get my 4runner I ultimately decided with decades of proven reliability over all the latest tech. The mpg is garbage but I feel confident driving it and I know if I get rid of it in 5, 10, 20yrs I'll get a fair price for it
Thanks guys! Love your channel. I love Toyota but it frustrates the hell out of me that they have a prototype LC with street tires. So stupid…
I got one of the last 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium in Lunar Rock. I prefer the dinosaur, but damn that LC is exciting! Based on the Taco, I think the 6th gen 4Runner will be just as good!
