"That's him showing his loyalty" For real, if they weren't tight he would never have opened his mouth in front of his lord like that

The guy didn’t just talk out of turn, he drew weapons in the presence of the regents.

This show is based on the book "Shogun" by James Clavell, which was inspired by true events and characters from Japanese history. Lord Toranaga is inspired by the real-life warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu and John Blackthorne was based on English sailor William Adams who shipwrecked on the Japanese shore. Different understandings of concepts like life and death, duty, loyalty, and personal freedom will be, along with political plotting, the main themes of this TV show. Japanese had an extremely different understanding of those concepts than people in the West. They didn't view death as a sin and it was a natural consequence of life. They believed in reincarnation and some afterlife (depending on their two main religions: Shintoism and Buddhism). They were such used to death that they've made it a cultural thing and life itself was not on the top of the list of most cherished values: respect, loyalty, and service stand higher. Also, contrary to what we can see in anime, these times were both beautiful and sophisticated as well as violent and gruesome. P.S. dude chopped the other guy's head not because he was a Christian but because he disobeyed his lord and didn't step back.
