It's all about aesthetics to people. Because he's a "strong and honorable" warrior, he's abuse doesn't seem as bad. If a skinny and weak (fat or ugly as well) looking cowardly man did the same thing, they would be much harsher.
Of course Buntaro isn't one dimensional and isn't all bad. He has emotions and he does care for some people, like his wife, in his own way. It just doesn't excuse his behaviors or actions.
My sympathy for him is as a man who was forced to become this because of how he was raised. But everything else, no. I have zero sympathy for him as a husband or as a father.
