I probably spent the last one hour watching different renditions of Gethsemane, including Ted Neeley's movie, the 2006 rendition and stumbled upon on this 2015 one. Holy shit, he's still got it. 40+ years!
The best part is that we all can see him in LIVE, hit that G note! Did you know he still travels and does Jesus Christ Superstar! I hated the movie because my parents would watch it all the time and being a kid this is not something I ever wanted to watch. Now that my parents are having health issues and are getting older I feel way more connected to this movie and this song since this was the part of the VHS that would get played the most. I am hoping before they pass the three of us can see him LIVE and I can now cry too, side by side with them, I love you, mom and dad!
I skipped school and went with a friend to NYC to see JCSS at the Mark Hellinger Theater in 1973. Ted was playing Jesus then, and he's STILL killing it NOW.....unbelieveable......
A gifted man , chosen , a mission to portray Jesus on a rock opera is not a joke , co'z it was view'd worldwide. If he can perform as long as he can , God will provide. Congrats Ted, may God give you an eternal happiness.
So amazing I have loved him since I was 10. No one could ever replace him. Superstar is a family tradition on Good Friday. My daughter Kat organised a message from Ted as a Christmas present to me. He called me by name and I lost it completely. Cry every time I hear this song. He is the best❤️ will be forever loved in my family

I just watched a video of him nailing this song in 2005 and it blew me away because he was 63 at the time. Now I see he sings it just as good well into his seventies. That's just insane... damn.
This is an amazing performance from any age but in his 70s, wow!! Plenty of people can sing Gethsemane well but no one gets the passion the way Ted does!! You can feel his love for this role and really comes through in is performance.

Amazing! NOBODY can do JC as good as Ted Neely! He still has it after 42 years here in this performance, and he's still performing this role after 44 years. ♥
No one comes close to Ted Neely and Carl Anderson in their respective roles. John Legend coukdnt come near Ted's performance, his anguish, his doubt, his anger, his bewilderment at being tasked to die such a horrible death. He portrays a man given a holy mission, a mission sometimes he didn't understand. He has doubts. He wants some assurance that he will be rewarded for his pain and suffering. All he asks is to measure of guarantee.
I spent some time playing this gig with a few different Jesus's. Got to work with Carl Anderson and have some great stories of hangs with him. I will say this about Ted. It wasn't just about the high note. He built the whole performance up into that climax. From the moment he walked onto the stage. That is the real mastery. Everyone who gets hung up on who sang the high G the best... you don't get it. Listen to everything Ted does before and after the high note. He draws you in to the drama. He is a true craftsman and artist. What a pleasure and a joy it is to hear him. And he is humble and kind. All of that shows in his performances. Ted...you Rock! :)
This is the man who started my love affair with musicals. This was the 1st live show I ever saw. It started Ted and Carl. What a way to be brought into this world. Ted will always be the be all end all Jesus for me

We listen to this song and love it but we often forget the origin - the God-man, Jesus, facing a terrifying and painful death, which he knew he was meant to go through but had to struggle and pray for strength to go through. It was necessary, and he knew it, to die that way and at that time in order to fulfill God's plan for the salvation of the world. Next time you hear this song, please do remember that.
