- Today I had a little time to install my tailgate handle with built in back up camera on my 2008 Ram and I figured it could be and would be something a lot of people would ne interested in for their own trucks so I wanted to take you guys along with the experience I had installing this handle and giving you a review of it along the way.

Wish you would of showed how the wire was ran from the tailgate to the radio, was the only thing i was looking for in the video
Sorry man I just figured that part of the project heald no weight to the video. Once I had it hooked up back at the tailgate I just ran it forward with my rock light wires.
I’m getting my truck painted professionally so was looking to get this mod done first so I can have my tailgate handle color matched along with my door handles. The shops concern is the textured finish. What did you do for prep for paint or process of painting? Also what brand back up camera did you use? With a hitch can you see well enough to line up a trailer? That’s the only reason I’m gonna go through the headache to install one
The texture is no big deal, you want to take the shine off with scotch bright then use high build primer, spray and sand, do that over and over until your happy then paint. It’s a summarized version but works really well.
I’m doing a backup relocation kit, and it occurred to me that I’ll probably lose my ability to lock the tailgate with the key fob. The kit has a male end which you plug into female, after the tailgate is disconnected. Not happy about that.
So there should be an option with a key hole, you shouldn't loose any of your features because all your doing is adding an accessory camera.
@@Cargill450 Yes, just finished actually. It’s a manual key hole situation now. Unless, I splice into the tailgate camera wires with original OEM harness. But, I won’t be backing my spare tire into the house for now. That’s always good, lol.
I installed the tailgate handle on my 2009 Ram 2500. Unfortunately, it just shows me the ground; no adjustability .

So my biggest concern with this is, how do we keep the bed locked? installing this i lose my key latch. Anyone have a work around for this or do you guys just put up with it?
I haven’t looked yet but I would imagine someone would sell one with the lock intact as well.
I know its a older vid but im in the middle of wiring mine now. Did you hook up the red power wire to power behind the radio. Looks like i got the same camera you have, red, black,purple wire on both ends.
If I remember correctly I just hooked that red power wire up at the tail light and not behind the radio
@Cargill450 thank you for a response, I hooked my red and purple up at the taillight found a good frame ground and hooked the purple wire up to a wire at the head unit labeled reverse in, plugged AV cord into port labeled reverse camera and I when I put the truck in reverse I get a prompt saying no video signal. Maybe I got a dud from Amazon.
Thats really odd, I wouldn't rule out a bad camera because the radio is getting the reverse signal so it sounds like it should all be right.
@Cargill450 ya ill get another one ordered up, that's a awesome truck by the way. I got a 07 5.9 with a built auto and bigger turbo and injectors. It's a grandpa/sleeper but I been throwing around maybe putting nice rims on it idk... thanks again for the response 👍.
@thatgreyplatty6315 thank you man! It's an addiction at this point but keep me posted on what happens with the camera, im really curious about it. I will probably be burned alive for saying it but your lucky to have the common rail 5.9 and not a 6.7, its a way easier truck to own and modify right now for sure.

is it a factory sterio in the ram because i cant seem to find that color on my uconnect to install my camera.
The power coming out of the tail light is the power for the reverse light? I'm assuming it's a 12v so that's OK to run to the purple wire on any head unit? Thanks for the info

So the videos I have of painting the mirrors I did the handles the same way, for a rattle can job its the best way I have found to do it

How well can you see your ball hitch?
Surprisingly well, I run a 10 inch drop hitch on our car trailer and that ball is just out of sight but the 8 inch hitch you can see the ball.
Do you know what model that Pioneer radio is. If I can id like to just copy the setup you have. Right now I just have a factory radio. Same truck and year

I personally like www.sonicelectronix.com for getting a kit put together, I just ordered a stereo and install kit for the s10 and it showed up fast. You will be able to put in your vehicle and get the right install kit to install the head unit into the truck then the camera installs super easy from there.

@Cargill450 i got what appears to be exactly the same camera as you... no backup camera previously.. no wiring experience what so ever. Head unit is the same as yours as well

Do u know what wire you need to trigger automatic reverse camera??
The easiest way would still be to pull your trigger from the backup light. I'm not sure exactly what wire but I'm sure you can pull from the front of the truck somewhere before the wire goes all the way back to the rear.
Music is irritating
Can you elaborate on what is irritating about it so I can make a note of it for the next one, im trying to take all the input I can get, is it the style, volume or something different?
@@Cargill450 The style and volume. Your presentation and presence id good but I usually close out videos that attack my ears. When I watch a video, I do so to obtain info and the noise distracts.
