  • With net migration at its highest ever level, Sky News can reveal that some foreign students are entering the UK with no intention of leaving.
We have spoken to two men who openly admit they exploited the student visa route to get to Britain.
It comes as one immigration solicitor revealed the number of calls for help has gone up 50% over the last year.

The home office will do nothing. I am speaking from personal experience. My ex-husband is from Pakistan he came to the uk on a student visa. He worked cash in hand to pay the university fees it was an affiliate course with i think it around 4500 in 2011. We got married. I informed the home office that he was marrying for the visa. Home office did nothing. When i informed the home office that i was divorcing him, his visa should have been curtailed, but nothing happened. The home allowed him to switch visas. He got a job at a university in Nottingham as a fitness instructor i presume the uni are sponsoring a work visa. Local MP, police and the ombudsman got involved as the spouse visa was clearly given using deception. To date, the home office has done nothing . Yet on there website its states if deception is proven, your visa will be curtailed. The system is a fraud, and the home office really need to do their jobs.

They also don't properly maintain records of those who have left so can't trust the data. I was a student in the UK left the UK in 2010. In 2021, after 11 years, I had to get some of my record from the UK so I applied for a freedom of information request with the home office from India and I got all my records held by the home office. I was surprised to see that they had no record of me leaving the UK in 2010 (I haven't been back to the UK since) and had even transferred by case to "removals" in 2014. That was the last record they had. So as per their data, I haven't left the UK. If I apply for a UK visa now even to be a tourist, they would refuse my application initially stating that I overstayed and lied and then I would have to present other evidence to prove I left the UK on time and didn't overstay a single day and never breached any immigration condition.

I failed one exam, which would have caused me to issue, but again never cared much for that as I could have come as skilled worker from the start. I thought I would have enjoyed uni life (my second master degree) as I had heard British go mad at parties. I didn't have a single British in my class. Such a disappointment. One Indian girl works more than 20 hours per week as a student and does not go to school at all (and does not pay tuition fees). Another one works as a food delivery rider with an account bought from another Indian who has the right to work (a student visa can't register for a rider account). They both rented a room from a friend who is also Indian, without any tenancy agreement). They said they will work here until the government send them back home. With the surge in the number of Indian and Nigerian students, I won't be surprised if this problem gets worse. The university sector needs to recognise that allowing this to persist will only damage its reputation.
Although there are security concerns associated with a minority of Chinese students, they do not dropout at the rates that Indian/Bangladeshi/Nigerian students do (and then make a dubious claim for asylum), they do not bring all of their dependants who then take up a significant number of publicly funded resources (e.g. school places), and >95% of Chinese students return to their country once their studies finish. The solution is to encourage more students from mainland China but prevent them from accessing courses which may be of a security concern.
Further to this, international student visas should only be offered to universities, not further education colleges, and the best universities and specialist higher education institutions only - say the top 75% of them. Universities are in the business of education, not selling backdoor routes into the UK.

It's the British government who needs all these students from abroad for money and cheap labour. Why would government allow all the students to stay for 2 years after the course on Post Study Work visa? Government wants them to stay back and find jobs. But reality is that no one gives them jobs. If government won't give option of staying back after study, no one will come to study in UK universities. But where would these universities find the funds to survive? Who will work as cheap labour? As government wants to exploit foreign students, they are doing the same in return! But clearly they have no prospects unless they get some dubious work visa arranged to stay legally on paper until they get permanent residency.

It's really sad to see these young people getting lost and resented far away from home in search of good lives. The Education system in UK is one of the finest, which if used properly & legally can make one's career propsher that they can survive anywhere in the world and don't have to go the wrong way. This country has nourished great minds like Newton, Faraday, Maxwell and even India's own mathematical prodigy Srinivasa Ramanujan - who's works wouldn't have seen light without the help of Hardy. It's worrying to see such a prestegious eduation system being abused because of failing governments.

I bet truly passionate professors never feel being ‘used’, they are more than happy to pass on their knowledge to someone who’ll cherish it - irrespective of their origin. UK is a great example of such multi-cultural education platform which I appreciate - people from different backgrounds sharing a common intellect space that breaks the boundaries. This is a symbol of humanity treasuring knowledge. Indeed, the visa abuses are wrong. But at least in my case, I had the privilege of learning under amazing professors and a cohort who valued education for what it really meant to us.

@@thevoid141there are more people in this country that just the professors to consider. Quite frankly some of the behaviour myself and my local community have observed from the Indian students and the ones that overstay has been completely unacceptable.. extremely loud shouting.and screaming when communicating with each other outside late at night, even all night till 06:00am, no care or respect for surrounding residents, heavy drinking, aggressive and threatening behaviour when asked to be quiet. Constant littering off cigarette buts outside local residents homes, sitting on residents parked cars in the street, throwing food waste and other litter into the streets, overcrowding rental properties with 2+beds in each room. A house for 4 ends up with 8-12 in it. They have an arrogance about them and a disregard for the quality of all surrounding homeowners and other residents.. thinking they are very important, when many of them have studied bogus/useless degrees and are not even working. Activity late into the night most nights regardless of those around them.. they really do not respect western society to the standard they should. The fact they get 2 years to live in this state of limbo is ridiculous when the UK has a shortage of homes and rental properties for its own citizens.
