I loved the lore and generational saga of this game.
So far, it's the only classic Phantasy Star game I've beaten (all 4 paths).
    It deserves a remake!

Wow. As I JUST finished replaying Phantasy Star 3, you came in playing the same story path I did!
I really like 3. It's a big improvement over 2, and had a really great story to boot too!
Also, your criticism about the game feeling unfinished is due to the ROM size of this game; it's the same size as Phantasy Star 2, and according to the developers, they had to cut some quests due to memory limitations. Imagine if this game was 8Mbit like Strider.

I'm actually with the majority here. Every small thing like the great visuals, music, tight gameplay are all rock solid.
What absolutely *KILLS* this game for me is the poorly executed branching story arcs that lead to multiple endings. Especially, since that's supposed to be the key highlight for this game.
And let me tell you -- If you mess up something as big as *THAT* , you're bound to have a lot of unhappy campers.
I know some people like this game, so I'm not going to absolutely loathe it. But, this game just needed some fine tuning here-and-there.

It's quite similar, beautiful music and animations with a party that your main character meets along the way and builds up strength to fight monsters as a party. Only difference is it doesn't have the different generations but definitely a great game with a poignant storyline.

This game reminds of me _Ys V_ and not just because they're graphically similar. Rather, they both feel like games that were simply painted with the brush of a more popular franchise but were really their own things. This is especially true in the case of _PS III_ because _PS IV_ takes place at the same time but on Algo and not on one of the ark ships. We even see a reference to these things in the crashed ship west of Aiedo.

slow walking, awful magic system (I don't know any other mage character than Lyle who did more damage attacking than magic) outside of healing. Marriage system was ok I guess, but choose Ayn with healing magic over boring Nial with no moves. Not sure if the dungeons were similar, but this is crap compared to PS4, though better than PS1 (deadzone or no enemy targeting even with sega ages ramping exp) and PS2 (enormous dungeon grind fest). Menus didn't age well neither. I do like the shop system. I'd also skip this and paly the Rpg maker Phantasy star III-2K which updates so much and is only Rhys' quest, but far better. rpgmaker.net/games/95/

The music is good ( Although, not the best in the series). I want to like the story. I really do. But, it is very convoluted in some areas.

    • @Leoj305
      @Leoj305 3 года назад +8

@@Dorian_Scott I can agree that the game shows, very much, that it's a product of it's time and hasn't aged gracefully as others from that era, but it has a special place in my heart. Phantasy Star IV is a much better game, story wise.

I just started watching this one right after the ending of _II_ , and it's so surreal to see what starts out looking like a traditional medieval-themed RPG game, when you see immediately see the futuristic sci-fi starting the first two games. It really drives home the point that civilization collapsed.
There's such a bleak overtone in this series, because everything hinges on the fact that after the heroine/hero completes their story, you find out that while peace lasted for a little while it didn't take long for things to go to pot and an entire civilization was basically wiped out. It feels differently than, say, _The Legend of Zelda_ , even though the Link of that generation has had to defeat Ganondorf multiple times, as Hyrule declined over the ages.
It's interesting to see a game that shows the results of your decision to marry. Did _Dragon Quest V_ take a page out of _Generations of Doom_ 's book?

    • @BoozeAholic
      @BoozeAholic Год назад +2

PS3 is still futuristic, it's just a plot twist that finally reveals itself during the endings. Although there's hints all throughout the game that you're actually inside a giant space ship. Phantasy Star 4 is the one that shows how far civilization collapsed. Mota is a wasteland in PS4 with zero government unlike the dystopia utopia feel that PS2 Mota had.

  • @PassionFlame64

It's interesting how Mieu stays with you throughout all 3 generations regardless of who you marry in them. What stunk was that certain areas were cut off to you so you had to go the long way to get to them again.

I greatly appreciate this video. Iv tried to play through this game multiple times over the past 25 years or so and finally now I have resolved to beating every Genesis title my dad owned, so I really committed this time. There were a few parts up until generation 3 that I got stuck on and needed a guide but most of it, I figured out myself, but once I got to gen 3, the guide I used for help kinda just gave up trying to help at all, and thankfully this was the generation path I chose as well so this video saved my sanity when I got stuck.
I didn't know that this was a hated title in the series (this was the only one in the series my dad owned so I didn't play the others) and, to an extent, I kind of understand. I don't know how the others were but judging this game from the standpoint of it just being its own game not in a series, I was extremely burnt out by the end. The first 2 generations were great, but the 3rd really felt like padding, and a lot of it. Take 15 minutes to run here, 15 more minutes to run back, all the while slamming you with hundreds of tedious fights that barely feel rewarding since at this point, money doesn't mean anything anymore and levels are very far between. The final generation is rough, especially if you don't know exactly where to go, because even when you do, its pretty slow and tedious, so I can see not knowing where to go taking hours between every objective.
That being said, everything else about it is really neat. My mind was blown that a game from 1990 could have branching paths when I got to gen 2, and getting to gen 3 and finding out it can split into roughly 4 whole storylines is amazing. This game would have absolutely been a lot of bang for your buck.
Even if I wasn't having a lot of fun with it by the end, I'm glad that I finally finished it and can close that chapter in my life of trying to beat the games my dad never finished, so thank you for this video, it was a tremendous help!

*_"Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom"_* | *_"Convoluted Ambitions"_*
*_"Phantasy Star 3"_* for the Genesis. Considered, by many, to be the "black sheep" of the series.... (😔 [Sighs]) *_Aaand_* I can definitely see why.
Breaking it down, the first game was (and still is) an impressive RPG for the *_Master System_* . And its *_Genesis_* sequel, while not necessarily bringing anything new to the table, was still a worthy sequel... that you *DEFINITELY* need a guide for. I mean, at _THIS_ point, it can only get even better.
    😁 Right?
    ....
    🥺 Right???
This game is the gameplay that you loved, now with replay value up the wazoo. Normally, that would be considered a *fantastic* edition for an RPG. Allowing for multiple playthroughs just to make every possible decision in a given circumstance. For '91, this is quite groundbreaking.
But _here_ , the endings seem so convoluted as well as the game itself in its *clearly* unfinished state.
    POSITIVES
    • *Good Graphics* (Similar in a lot of ways to *_"PSII"_* , now a lot better. So, no issues here.)
    • *Underrated Music* (The first town... Just... Listen to this. 17:50 ... -- It only gets better from there.)
    • *Tight Gameplay is Unchanged* (Plays just as smoothly as the previous installments, so no real worries... 😊 *_"FINALLY!! NO MORE EARLY GAME GRINDING!!!"_* )
    • *Ahead of its Time* (The biggest part of this particular game are the different *_"generations"_* of your main character, *_Prince Rhys_* . You take control of a few different characters throughout the game. This isn't a "one-man show" anymore. Heck, that's not even the meat with these potatoes. Unlike most other games at the time, this game has multiple endings that stem from various occurrences throughout the story. This predates *_"Chrono Trigger"_* and *_"Final Fantasy VI"_* by a few years!! Good god!)
    NEGATIVES
    • *Forgettable Battle Music* (🤮 *_"UGH! Who thought that maximum twang was a good idea!?"_* )
    • *Convoluted Branching Story Arc System* (I know! I know! It was an amazing concept and all... but some of these alternatives just make me cringe trying to get my head around them. Hell, I often heard other people diss this game *BECAUSE* of these poorly done story arcs. Just a *ME* thing, I know. But, these needed a bit more work... *JUST* a bit...)
    • *STILL Not Breaking Any Ground Gameplay-wise* (Man, I don't remember a single new thing that this introduced that the previous installments did not have. Staying true for two games in a row is fine. But, not *THREE!* Step it up, Sega!)
    Final Rating: 6.5/10
This is the *_"Final Fantasy 2"_* the series. It's not very good (at least in *MY* eyes... Just like FF Tw-...), but I *DO* see why some people like this. I won't discount it entirely.
It *IS* ambitious for 1991. I'll give it *THAT* . But, it needs just a *_liiiittle_* more work.
Play too judge for yourself, is all I'm going to say here.

This was the first Phantasy Star game I saw, years ago. My older cousin had it, and I thought it looked neat then. To address the question of why it is disliked, without myself having played it: In this video, it seems like you spend hours walking between the same 4 locations, and numerous towns and green meth-labs that are essentially the same location, without being challenged by the encounters until the very end, even disregarding the inexplicable proliferation of monsters from Rhys' scenario in Sean's. It didn't look like any foe had much more than 200 hit points until the final zone, when a few, but not all, had 300, and I didn't see how you could possibly get there with less power than you had without running from a lot more fights. The difficultly looks it comes from enduring tedium. Maybe a bit from finding all the progression triggers and invisible area entrances but that is hard to guess about; I could easily have missed some key dialog in here.
I do like that introduction tune and some of the monster designs, but I can't take them seriously when they are wiggling their daggers and flexing their jaws.

Its a good game. But it's really confusing as to where to go. I had to watch this to find the cave that you use the sapphire for. I'm sure I'll use it alot more too XD. I'll keep ya updated on that.
Edit: 55:56 I swear Im fucking blind.

3:27:30 - Are the level ups randomized when it comes to HP and TP? I'm looking at your characters and those health numbers just can't be right. My current Gen 1 save file has Rhys at level 21 and he only has 85 HP compared to your own level 17 Rhys at 80 HP.

Does this game have a part where you open inter-dimensional portals (or something like that) on the world map? If so, that's about when I got stuck. Would love to go back and try this game again.

@@NintendoComplete haha. Yeah something seems poorly communicated in how to move forward, but I just found this game in some kid's old collection, or lying around somewhere. But it was pretty enjoyable, like finding a gem in the dirt.

Hilarious because I remember being confused that on the wedding day my character's bride is abducted and he gets immediately thrown in the dungeon. All this time it was lazy writing.

most the enemies dont look like they are attacking you. its like they didnt animate them at all they just shift around like still art being moved with a mouse or some thign. just seems lazy compared to PS2 an 4

There was that, plus you don't get to see your own party members in battle. This was mostly the norm for RPGs of the time, but Phantasy Star 2 had big colorful sprites for your party members, so PS3 felt like a graphical downgrade in every respect. PS4 returned with the graphical style of II, and added a whole bunch more memory for the devs to play with.

this version of PS seems like an offshoot of the series or non official . Kind of like the Zelda CDi games. They just licensed the name but the game itself lacks big time.

This gave was ok. I finished 3 endings then got tired of it. It was too easy. PS2 was way harder.

    Rating: 4/10
    Pros:
    Portrait - looks like PC-98
    Menu - looks good
marriage system - this game is a father of fire emblem 4 and dq5
    Cons:
    DUNGEONS - too complex
    Absent characters animation in-battle
Worst Graphics - looks like PC-98 and EVO theory of evolution graphics.
The world map is boring for me. It's TOO BIG. passageway to any region is too LONG and it's REALLY BORING 🥱
The soundtrack feels boring to me. It sounds like PC-98. 🤮
    No storyline

I pretty much stay away from this Phantasy Star. Don't like it. Unique story, but it's non-canon, and it has a different feel. Notice how the battles is like the original game on the Master System.
