I love your trains! When I was young (I am now 65) I trained as a fireman/stoker on steam engines in Cape Town South Africa. I was paid a fortune at the time (the equivalent of around $1.65 a day in 1975, although our currency was then MUCH stronger, so probably around $16 a day!). I just loved the way the engine “breathed” and responded to every touch. Taking water by kicking a lever on the floor, and creating a vacuum was almost a sexual experience! An entire train once derailed while I was illegally driving it (my driver was sleeping) but thank The Lord it was not my fault and I had done nothing wrong (the points were badly set). But what an experience. I relay the entire episode in my book Lesson From The Sauna which you can buy for a few cents on Kindle. I am sure you will enjoy the one chapter called “When The Trains Roll By” which is about the derailment, and is also set in White Rock, BC Canada through which many US trains trundle every day (much to the chagrin of most Canadians). And me. But stupid Canada for selling the railway line right along the quaint beachfront to a foreign company! Anyway. There is nothing like the sensual experience of a steam engine as I am sure you know well. I can’t wait to see your trains shunt through snow in your backyard! Good luck....
Toby: Now who's the fastest engine on Sodor, Gordon! Gordon: (annoyed) I hate that tram now. He's not even electric. Toby: Whoosh! Edward: Shush Gordon, You’ve offended him!
Sir Topham Hatt is a proud man to see that his engines made it into the top five fastest locomotives in Jim's video. This will make Gordon very jealous indeed.
i like the amtrak train thats my favorite it is the fastest oh and there also a train in amtrak are is the acela express is the fastest amtrak train i have seen so far but toby is fast you should put toby in first place dude zim
It makes sense Toby runs fast. Despite not being arrow dynamic the engine is most likely pretty light and has a bigger motor than some of the smaller engines that are light.
This was great fun! My all time favorite and, apparently, many others, is the ATCHISON TOPEKA & SANTA FE SUPERCHIEF!. I took a ride on the real one a few decades ago & never forgot the experience.Thank you!
my kids love your channel. it's one of the few things we let them watch. we live in KENNESAW, GA. we love the train named "the general" famous for its being stolen and then dramatically recaptured during the Civil War. it's fully restored here in a museum.
The Santa Fe Super Chief that you owned are actually EMD F7 A-B units. The F7 is a 1,500 horsepower Diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD between 1949 & 1953. A total of 2,393 cab-equipped lead A units and 1,463 cabless-booster units would be built. The 3 railroads that had the most orders of the F7 is Southern Pacific (250 A units & 220 B units), the New York Central (238 A units & 56 B units), and the Santa Fe (215 A units & 247 B units).
2:46: So without further ado, let's go go go! First up today, a train that Jim Zim's RUclips viewers including me really seemed to love. Jim Zim have got a lot of great comments about the Santa Fe Super Chief diesel locomotive #202 from LGB. It is a classic from an era that is long gone when passenger trains carried more passengers than airplanes. There are five different cameras to capture these time trails. A GoPro camera captures the start and finish of the time trials. Another GoPro camera for the waterfall fountain view before the G scale model trains head under the orange tree. Third GoPro camera mounted on the G scale model trains for the POV which by the way stands for Point Of View shots at ground track level. Fourth camera which is the cell phone camera in the garage where it captures the halfway times of the 25 of 26 G scale model trains and also the halfway sign. The halfway sign was 6 and/or 10 feet short where it really should have been. Back to camera number three mounted on the G scale model trains from Bachmann, LGB, MTH Electric Trains and Piko as we go through the laundry room and in to the kitchen before reaching the dining room. And the Dining Room Cam which is the big Canon DSLR 80D camera, which explains why the picture quality is so much better than the other cameras. Once the G scale model trains reach the dining room, they have the start and finish line in sight and we will see the fast and slow runs on the layout. Holy Cow we don't believe what we have just saw! Toby the #7 0-6-0 brown steam Tram Engine from Thomas and Friends manufactured by Bachmann ran the layout in 37 seconds and the halfway time of 17 seconds beating all of the G scale model trains in the race! You will do another race with 26 G scale analog, battery powered and DCC locomotives in your G scale model train collection sometime someday in the future!
Thanks, my 2 year old loves your channel and you have helped cultivate an even deeper and richer appreciation for the rails. I’ll capitalize on that and teach him rail history as he gets older. All the best to you!
This was fabulous! Very entertaining and the commentary was perfect. This is the most excitement I’ve had since Spring Training baseball! Thank you Jim!
It's ironic that Toby was the fastest of all the engines in your collection, considering that in "Hasty Hannah", he told Hannah that he wasn't built for high speeds.
Watching this definitely brought out the kid in me. Now you should run the time trials again, but with all the locomotives pulling the same consist. It would be interesting to see if your engines are just as fast, relative to the others, with cars as without.
Can you make a two track layout for a race on two engines against each other and some races will be Thomas vs Percy ,James vs Emily , Toby vs Winston, coca cola vs Santa Fe steam engine and Amtrak vs first responders
Hello Jim, that was a smashing video you created. I love seeing your G Scale Model Locomotives running at full speed. I thought Thomas the Tank Engine, who is my No.1 favourite character & locomotive is going to win until Toby the Tram Engine beaten his time & that surprised me. As what Thomas said, "Little Engines Can Do Big Things." Thomas is now the fastest tank engine in your collection, beating Percy, the Porter & Swiss Locomotive. Onces again, a smashing video, well done Jim.
On the boxes for all three of those G-scale models, they are listed as Dash 8. The real Norfolk Southern First Responders locomotive is actually a EMD SD60E, I believe.
Do you know what I find cool? 1.Toby's half way time was 17 seconds. 2.Toby's finish time was 37 seconds. 3.Toby's number is (obviously) 7. 4.if you add the numbers of his end time, you get 10. 5.Then you add Toby's number to the 10 and you get his half way time. To put it more simply, if you add Toby's NO.7 and the ending time, you'll get 17 which is his half way time!
Very creative way to run trains during this time, i think the Amtrak was faster than the two other diesels because its modified to be a passenger engine, whereas Santa Fe and 911 are freight engines, now if you had Gordon in the fleet I wonder if he'd beat Toby because he's an express engine
Enjoyed the video, Jim! Its always fun to see which locomotive in a collection is the real hot rod of the bunch! A member of the club I'm in and myself decided to pit a pair of my Scaletrains Rivet Counter ET44AC locomotives against a pair of Walthers Mainline locomotives, all dcc/sound equipped (check out the video when you get a chance) and see which pair could outrun the other. Unfortunately, with one loop being dcc and the other straight dc, it wasn't the best way to see which pair could outrun the other but it was loads of fun anyway! Take care buddy!
Jim Zim: Holy cow! 37 seconds that's the fastest run we've seen 9 seconds faster than the fastest run we've seen today! Me in bed watching this: Toby has a cow catcher, was that meant to be a joke? Any ways, on with the video!
You'll really enjoy my next video, which will be coming out a few days from now. I'm editing it right now. It's a drag race between each of my Thomas & Friends trains. So, instead of racing against the clock, the trains are actually racing each other side-by-side. The goal is to find out if Toby is still my fastest train. Maybe know that he's a year older, he might be starting to slow down. ha ha ha
Hi Jim. Hats off to you for a fun idea. Unfortunately, I don't think it settled the question of which loco was the fastest because - to use a horse racing analogy - it should have been a handicap race (do you use that expression in the US?). I wasn't a fair comparison as you had battery/DC/DCC locos and also they were of different weights. It is beyond my small brain to come up with a method of handicapping, but it would have been nice to see one.
It was either just the reflection from the sun or the lights but I saw something light up in the trains cab in the lionel Santa Fe super chief. They also have G scale plastic train and another little mini ho scale plastic train. And ready to run Lionel polar express train
The Super Chief definitely has interior lighting. So does my Amtrak train. They both look cool when they run in the evening, but it's basically impossible to catch on video because a video camera needs light to get a good picture... so trying to shoot model train videos at night doesn't work well!
@@JimZim oh cool thx and btw The G scale plastic train is my new bright same with the little HO scale plastic train it’s not really each of steel though it doesn’t really fit
How convenient, that locomotive is a, brace your ears, a P32-8BWH locomotive designed for switching and backup power to work alongside the GP40TC. Now, if any of you are curious about which engine I am talking about, the link to the time of video is right here: 21:50

It is totally up to the individual video owner to decide if ads will be placed during the video, and they always have the option to specify the exact moment when ads should appear. It seems like most RUclipsrs are just too lazy to take the time to do it the way I do it. I think my way makes the ads much less annoying for viewers. I'm glad you noticed that I put a little more effort in to it than most RUclipsrs do!
@@JimZim For sure, when i saw that edit, i was like, that is not timing. I never knew content creators could choose where to put their adds, and plan, and record...accoringly. I'm glad you noticed that I put a little more effort in to it than most RUclipsrs do!
@@JimZim For sure, when i saw that edit, i was like, that is not timing. I never knew content creators could choose where to put their adds, and plan, and record...accoringly. And honestly, haveing a break, right before the ad, makes the difference. I dont feel like im roped into watching an ad, this felt like it was part of the program. All too often, as you stated, many content creators drop them mid sent...*buy our car buy our soap* ...ence, and it gets annoying every 4-5 minutes on longer videos.
Cheers, have a wonderful week, stay safe, stay healthy, and as they say on WNTW with Ken Paterson, "We share the best hobby in the world, so rock-n-roll, lets go run some trains!"
Toby: woah! Who are you?
Me: The fastest train in sodor
Edward and Gorden: holy crap
All I ever wanted a electric thomas all my life
Like that’s right it looks cool I hope they never stopped running time so even though those types are scratched her self some that’s the run
They have 2 other white pass trains running 190 at tweetsie railroad and 192 at Dollywood
You have the best model trains I have ever seen
Is ir me or.... does Jims voice sound like Casey Kasem (Rip) of the weekly top 40!! lol! He has an awesome radio voice and the microphone makes the look!
The Amtrak dash 8 is the only different one of the three. It’s a different model. If you look at the wheels the others are 6 axle locos while the Amtrak one is a 4 axle.
I never noticed that particular detail before... but you are absolutely correct about that.
Sometimes i think the engine arent going full speed

Holy Cow! I don't believe what we just saw!

Nice collection you have, sad you don't have Casey Jr train from Dumbo in your set
I thought Thomas would give Toby a run for his money
He’s a good train that doesn’t break railroad law.
toby is the fastest model, but the slowest engine in the show
Trams are not really meant to be fast. Models do need to do that.
this is good for kids, rated E for Everyone by a non-professional
