Galaxy S20 Ultra review: something to prove

- Samsung's new Galaxy S20 Ultra is a lot of phone: a lot of megapixels, a huge screen, a high refresh rate, the big battery, and something to prove. Can it beat OnePlus for screen, the Pixel 4 for camera, or the iPhone 11 Pro for video? In this review, Dieter Bohn answers all of those questions.

True dat. I hate losing the headphone jack.
The one thing that I don't like about wireless headphones is the latency, especially when playing games
Sony has the only flagship that has the headphone jack other than LG
There is an adapter for the headphone jack
This was the only disappointment when I heard about the phone. Luckily it's boxed with USB-C headphones, so that works well enough for me
The biggest compromise of all that camera hardware is the image processing that Samsung does. Because it is a Korean company, they lean more towards skin brightening/smoothing over sharpness/detail.
Thats so true

In a lot of places a phone can utilize LTE aggregation (displayed as LTE+), and ultimately you receive faster speeds than midband 5G. However, speed is often irrelevant in the present and at least a few years into the future until data caps are changed to accommodate the faster speeds or removed altogether.
"space zoom" lol there's a reason the p30 capped out at 50x zoom...
Probably because P30 only has an 8mp telephoto sensor and Samsung has 48 and can crop in way more.
Nick Motsarsky How much is Samsung’s telephoto?
already mopped everyone else at 50zoom, why not go over the top?
@@rondelmoore7130 48mp.
That's because you can't beat physics. Most people think that optical zoom is lossless but it's not, because of diffraction.
The diffraction limit gives you the resolution of the lens, which is independent of the sensor's resolution.

zoom, in my opinion, is actually a really important tool in photography. the portrait shots look so much better when zoomed in compared to shots on the primary camera, and that is without using portrait mode.
10:33 This feature is actually really useful for me when I'm listening to music. If I lock Spotify, and click "Clear All" to get rid of my background apps, it won't stop the music.

Nice review by the way.
He shows his dedication to one brand in the details LOL
You guys are the most baised reviewers ever always praising iphone and pixel but not Samsung.
because there is nothing to "praise" about with samsung , everything is just meh .
Hey Verge, why does your background (referring specifically to the dark background behind Dieter) blowout so much at 1440p at higher brightness levels. For your reference I have Galaxy Note 9 which has an OLED screen and supports HDR. Is it just due to video processing by RUclips or did you aim to make HDR videos?
When I watch an android phone review and the reviewer wears an apple watch, something always doesn't feel right to me.
Idk why his tune is sooooo different 😂
@Tsvetomir Dimitrov I swear to god, all the reviewers wearing a Apple Watch make this phone seem good but not great while promoting other phones.
Either they are apple fans or just have something against Samsung.
Tsvetomir Dimitrov right
It's good to have an iOS user review Android phones for a balanced perspective rather than just Android fanbois doing it. MKBHD wears an apple watch but is quite neutral in his reviews, as was this review and reviewer. I didn't feel any bias pro apple or against Samsung or Android.
Oh
Design wise, it's almost a home run for me. Looks really premium and I'm a big fan of square camera modules. Personally, I'd prefer the front camera to be on the side. It looks odd in the middle.

Samsung : has entered the chat
Headphone jack : has entered the chat

They cant be a lot to complain about on this phone it just has everything except for headphone jack .
Frame rate has always been massively superior to pixel amount. As a long term gamer I can vouch for that for sure. Like that feature. Gaming will be great on the S20.
For decades, reviewers complained about Samsung's beauty mode for aggressive skin smoothing. Nothing has changed and unfortunately never will.
Update fixed the out of focus around edges issue and auto focus issue.
I don't get why they use lower MP sensor on the ultra-wide camera. That's the one that would be the MOST useful to have extra pixels, so you could "zoom in" after the fact. Hell, put the 108 megapixel sensor on the ultrawide camera, and suddenly it can "zoom in" to 12 megapixels to 9x zoom - more zoom than the actual folded-optics zoom!
Do we know when or if the S10 Lite is coming to the US?
Phone review - no
Camera review - yes
The bar is set for 2020.
Let's see what other smartphone companies can do
I love my Note 10+ but the display is super hard to see outdoors in sunlight. Watching Netflix movies, etc. outdoors? Not happening in sunlight. I'm curious why this is not talked about? Movies are already dark to begin with but this phone in sunlight is just a no go! Is this because of the QHD Display? I don't have these issues with my iPhone 8+ - I've cranked the brightness up, etc.
Solid review, but there are ways to get around the camera issue. Instead of shooting with the Samsung software, use Adobe Lightroom and take photos in RAW format. That format preserves EVERY detail caught by the lens, without the combination of pixels.
But yeah, don't use the crappy Samsung camera software. If you're serious about taking good pictures, never let the software edit for you.

With that $1,400 starting price, I can't help but feel that the S20 Ultra's base storage should've started at 256 GB, same as the Note 10 Plus.
Am i the only one who finds him overreacting for everything!
This should have been S20 Ultra camera review!
It feels like it is hard for them to say Samsung actually made a really good phone. How surprising that this doesn't happen with apple.....
I don't know about about you but if I'm buyaing an ultra high end phone, I will go through ALL of the settings app on Day 1 to see what my phone can do. What I love about Samsung phones is that months or years after owning one, I still get surprised by a hidden function which I didn't know my phone can do.
There's no way Apple would score a 7 with the Verge unless it released a total dud.
@Tech J 37 No, just realistic.
How do they get the phones to stand up like that?
And it has no headphone jack , why remove that option ?
Samsung is apparently is going to release an update to allow 120hrz at 1440p and an update to fix some camera issues. I preordered my galaxy s20 ultra, so im waiting till it comes out to get it.

Exactly. I wished I had it during my sis graduation which was in a stadium.
I do feel like we've reached some kind of limit on phones. Like other than maybe making an in-screen camera I just don't see any bigger features in the next few years. If somehow we figure out strong glas that doesn't scratch or break easily that would probably be the biggest thing. Other than that, I guess folding phones are the next big thing.
Like I mean, legit, this year's big thing is faster refresh rate and more cameras. Thats it. Although I look forward to that refresh rate, thats disabled by default if I heard correctly. So like most of the users won't even experience it.
I feel like we still have long ways to go, and partly that's because of limited battery technology on phones.
@@abstro9942 Actually that's a good one!
Love your watch strap, may I know what brand that is?
I was more impressed with the S20+. That phone felt better in the hand.
Same!
They are just all trying to catch attention with the review of the newest and most expensive things, that's all.
Review the regular S20 pleaseeeeeeee
The issue is, the average person doesn’t want to have to remember a list of rules and which restrictions apply to which camera mode when taking a photo or video.
For example, if you want to take a video you have to remember that image stabilisation is only available in HD and lower resolutions. If you want 4K or (comically) 8K, you cant do that. This phone is a spec beast yet a 2 year old iPhone has 4K image stabilisation (as do some other android phones).
My point is, it needs to be simplified massively.
Why is 8k video gimmicky? At least the option is there if you want it. I guess everything is a gimmick until Apple does it.

2:05 Samsung did say they will fix it later in an update and you can have both 120hz and full HD..
IMHO I know the camera on the S20 Ultra is already just next level, but can you imagine the possibilities if the super res zoom and pixel shift-like capabilities in night sight of the Pixel 4XL software was in this phone as well. The 100x could potentially look as good as the 20-30x zoom images. That could bring the Ultra's detail at long focal lengths on par with the RX100VII. I know phone manufacturers tend to not understand this as well, but pros take RAW or DNG capture seriously at all focal lengths (many of these phones with an abundance of camera sensors are only capable of it from the main sensor) and if those 2 things had been included Samsung would make the RX100 look like a bad deal and almost pointless for photographers than value detail over bokeh. Also I sure hope the ISO in pro mode is not limited to 800 again. We all know that sensor can perform much higher than that when needed and does in auto mode.

&:03 Nice photo...for a phone or even some cameras.
Is it just me or are most of the tech reviewers trying to make this phone not seem great on purpose.
A lot of the reviewers that I watch regularly just had a different more serious tone when reviewing the s20 lineup.
Jelly Twins101 Samsung has set some very high standards for the S20 Ultra (especially for that price) but the phone (currently) doesn’t meet those high standards. However Samsung did say they will fix most of those issues and make the cameras better with software updates. But If I’m paying 1300 for a phone, you know I want that phone to be close to perfect. Idk about the other s20 line up, I haven’t really seen good reviewers (mrmobile, mkbhd, jerryrigeverything, android authority [maybe],.....) actually reviewing the phones. But I really hope Samsung catches up and fixes most of the problems with the s20 lineup ( sorry for any grammatical mistakes).
What would you recommend? I live in ZAMBIA.. and we are not having 5G any time soon maybe 10 years from now... maybe we do have LTE that's cool.. so does it boost my LTE speeds? That's my question
@7:10 you know why like the selfie camera so much!? Is because it doesn't have allll that tech support to it. So it just takes simple clean pic's?
One thing hated so much about this Galaxy is that it tends to to take too UNREALLY soft pictures, almost destroying whats "real", which is not good. Hope they've done somthin it this time...

Meanwhile, the ROG 2 has 2 headphone jacks, vapor cooling, dual front stereo speakers with minimal bezels, and stock android. Though at the expense of having an average consumer which I suppose is fine if you're not printing posters. Btw, the ultrawide camera (12mp) is a downgrade from the s10/n10's 16MP ultrawide.
