Love your video and your mad soldering skills. Suggestion for people curious is try programming layers if possible with bigger keyboards. I’m on a 60% atm with layers and it’s amazing. I agree the less the fingers have to travel the less errors you get not to mention how much desktop space you get for your mouse. Keep up the great content
As someone with a career doing software development but formal education in electronics and automation, with experience building them, use rosin core solder, NOT acid core: they’re different animals, and if you don’t clean the soldering after the fact, the acid will corrode it. Also, the rosin core, while it’s still preferable to not use it like incense, isn’t likely to cause long-term problems short of an absurd amount of breathing in the fumes. And make no mistake, what you’re breathing in is the fumes from the flux, whether acid or rosin, because the metals are too heavy to float in the air like that.
This video inspired me to finally get a Niu Mini. Built it together with a colleague from work last weekend, using this video as reference. It was so much fun! Love your videos, they are super informative and well made!

Hello!! what a great video, I think the keyboard is lovely, but I liked to be able to assign shortcuts to each key to work faster in my animation, editing and 3D programs, is it possible to do that with this keyboard? or do you have a better recommendation for that function?
This is where layers come to the fore: where you need something optimized for a given context, you make a layer for that. With a layer toggle key (which, with QMK firmware you can take a key and define it to do something while you just hold it, or return something else when you tap it) you can then toggle to a layer of your choosing, where all the keys you define on that layer have whatever keys including modifiers returned, and/or macros. Note that as long as you don’t run out of firmware space or layer count (whichever comes first) you can have up to 32 unique layers in QMK, and you can jump between all of them from anywhere, to anywhere, so you don’t need to worry about being limited to 47 (or, more realistically, 46, because you’re holding down a key) assigned keys for your specialized usage on a layer. Consider: it’s likely the combinations of keys most used for animation aren’t the same as 3D things, so perhaps you create a unique layer for each, optimized however you see fit, perhaps using mnemonics for the alphabetical keycaps if that’s how you choose. I’d wager with sufficient firmware space (go for more than 32k flash) the bigger limitation is your memory as to what you’ve created for your layers ;) I have an Ergodox EZ Glow, which has 76 keys, and I currently have around 5 layers, with many keys having different functions even on the same layer, using tap dance. This uses up quite a bit of firmware space, and the keyboard microcontroller is an older one with only 32KB FLASH, and not all of that is available. Their newer Moonlander Mark I has a newer, more powerful microcontroller with (by far) the most important change being it has (I think) 128k flash, leaving more than enough space to create 32 full layers on the 72 keys. I write software for a living, so I’m trying to optimize for symbol entry on thumbs/index fingers, and also remove as many ways of chording as feasible, ideally never needing to use chords, and if so, minimize to 2 keys pressed at a time. In MacOS there are 6 unique levels of navigating a document/text and its selection, from a single character back and forth, to the start and end of the document. I specifically created 2 layers that build on the standard left-right/up-down arrows to go across the top row in a spatially-organized manner where the document level is outermost, arrows innermost, with one layer only for navigation (but no modification) and the other layer for all that navigation while also selecting the text/document. The result: once I’ve selected to the correct layers, I don’t need to use any chords at all, and I don’t need to worry (in the case of the selection layer) I’ll glitch on a large selection and need to restart the selection, all while not needing the mouse. Oh, that’s another thing you can also do with QMK firmware: create a layer you can use for mouse keys, so you can move the mouse in the various directions, use the mousewheel, click the buttons, without your fingers leaving the keyboard. Admittedly, that won’t be viable if you’re trying to do fine and fast drawing with a mouse, but for most people, that’s not a daily use. Don’t underestimate the power of the user-programmable keyboard firmware, especially with what Zsa (the makers of my keyboard) refer to as the hyper and the meh keys, which for the hyper key, has all the modifiers pressed at the same time, for meh, not quite as many: most applications don’t use that many modifiers in their keybindings, meaning you now have a HUGE range of options you can map to using those within your applications and/or OS as shortcut keys, that are unlikely to conflict with existing keybindings, and you don’t need to be a contortionist to use them.
hey, im trying to build my own keyboard and i was wondering do i really need to do all that soldering or can i just skip that part. i don’t have a soldering kit
40% looks cool but as a developer I'm aiming for minimal effort in typing so I can't work with every other character needing a two-key press. 65% is perfect, I only need two keys for the function keys which I rarely use at work.

Layers, using QMK you can add whatever you want wherever you want, that's the beauty of custom keyboards.
