How many languages do you speak man? I tried mastering a 3rd, but I think I tried learning when I was too old.

Same here. German, Russian, French and English only in this video. Impressive! Voting for language related video on Wolfgang's channel.
Lets see:
russian - native
english - everybody is learning it in school
german - he lives in germany, so he had a lot of practice
french - idk why he needs it but its much easier to learn the fourth language than the second

@@SeboxFX Are you French?
So when do you switch to 20% keyboard?
As someone who's been using a 40% ergonomic keyboard for about 9 months: it's amazing and I can't imagine going back to a full-size keyboard. The fact every single functionality you'd see e.g. on a normal laptop keyboard is available without moving the hands back and forth, and just as fast because you basically just use the thumbs for more than pressing a single oversized spacebar. Including stuff like the arrow keys which are directly under the fingertips at all times. But beware, I'm a hardcore Vim user and am comfortable with keyboard shortcuts, so YMMV.
The tip about not using blank keycaps is good for beginners - I started out with a ~50% keyboard with basically the same layout and number row, and even though I didn't use the number row it still helped to see at a glance which number is hidden where. Nowadays I can enter everything without looking at keys, so over time you can probably go for blank keycaps as well if you insist.
Also in my experience it's possible to use a 40% keyboard and still switch to a standard keyboard now and then. The first few times it's a bit strange but over time the brain learns to differentiate between the two. So I can still use a normal laptop keyboard, for example, but it feels much more cumbersome because all the keys are spread out farther.
And I went for Aliaz 70g switches instead of the 60g, but I can confirm those are really damn quiet. Comparable to an average laptop keyboard as long as the case is quiet enough.

Ugh. Now I wish I could hear all the other linux-oriented youtubers speak Russian, because I was not, in any concievable way, prepared to hear you speak it, and got legit shocked.
very impressed that you've heard of bépo,considering only a tiny percentage of the francophones are aware of its existence
Congrats for 30k subs!!
Very cool seeing a switch type I've never heard of! Hearing you speak 4 different languages was crazy impressive too. Can you make a video talking about how you learned them so fluently?
Kudos on the trackball as well. I myself like weird stuff. I am currently using the Bastron Glass keyboard and an Elecom HUGE with my Hackintosh. Are you left-handed?
Cheers Wolfgang! The keyboard topic really has been haunting me recently. Currently, I have a Vortex Poker 3 RGB ISO-DE in use, but will swap it for a Poker Black ANSI-US.
Indeed, I realized way too late that the ANSI layout is not only superior in terms of economics (better symmetry, much nicer Enter key), but it is in fact far more suitable for text input in virtually all languages that use Latin script when used in conjunction with a Compose key, similar to vim Digraph feature. I think I will map my Compose key to Right Alt / AltGr.
That said, I guess ortholinear layouts and blank key caps are not for me though. I first need to improve accuracy of my touch typing, but then I wonder, won't blank key caps kinda undermine the purpose of RGB lighting?
As for alternative layouts, I have been digging into that as well in terms of research, but I wouldn't want to have ZXCV and HJKL swapped for OS and vim keybindings, so any other alternative layout won't have any point.
BTW, respect for your language skills. For some reason, I learned how to read Cyrillic script (sorta), but don't actually speak any Russian. I think I should change that.
You use Vim right? How can you not use page up/down or rather what do you use instead? Thanks!
Wolfgang is fluent in English: pretty impressive, he doesn't even have a very strong accent
Wolfgang flexes his British accent: that sounds really natural, I guess he learned with a British teacher or spent some time in the UK or someting

Realy nice impression of your language skills. Thanks for that, i was very suprised listening to your German Accent.
I am very impressed!.. both by your language skills and the keyboard!
I NEED those silent key switches. That seems so nice!
Nice to see that a 40% ortholinear can be used practically. I'm having a hard enough time on my 65% with FN + Shift + Esc for a ~. Also just getting into programming and not sure if I will need page up/down etc.
40% keyboard can support 2 or 3 "fn" key. So you can setting ~ like fn2 + esc. (Yeah, my english very bad, becose i from russia,
I personally use a Planck since half a year and I do not regret it. The biggest downside is (like Wolfgang said) mapping the umlauts properly on the smaller layout. But I got used to it quite fast.
2:45 Why not print your keyboard layout on a paper sheet and put it next to a monitor?
So you mentioned that Cherry Browns are still a bit too loud? I have browns and I really like them but what would you recommend as a quieter alternative?
Aliaz is pretty good
Ah, merci, tu as répondu à beaucoup de questions que je me posais sur le Planck :)

No joke. That sponsor transition made me think like wow some new competition for Linus
Then I paused the video to read the split second message at 3:26
hey i would love to buy an ortholinear, but i would prefer to have the keyboard split in two, since i am a big dude and my hand are fairly apart and when i type sometime they feel to close for comfort.

THX for the advise with the German layout
Meinst du damit ALT-Codes, also z.B. ALT+132?
send_altcode(228, record);

Hi, I saw that you have a Focusrite audio interface and I wanted to ask, did you have any problems using it with linux? I'm a musician and I also have a Focusrite so that's why I ask. Awesome video btw, cheers
I used to have zero problems with it, but lately I've been having this weird issue where PulseAudio would randomly change the sample rate, and all the audio would become low-pitched. Pretty weird.
@@WolfgangsChannel That's really weird and problematic as the sudden change in the sample rate can bring aliasing issues, maybe there's an app interfering with the audio, anyway, thank you for taking the time to reply, you make awesome content.

I use the PUO layout (adnw.de). German letters are on a separate layer. I also highly use the layers 3 and 4 from the Neo2 layout. I only have one shift key on the left thumb and I use the thumbs for layer 3 and 4 and Ctrl
Hey, Wolfgang, how do you press Shift without any other buttons, Alt without other buttons, both Shifts at the same time? How do you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

@@WolfgangsChannel , for example, you need to press Alt to see menu in Firefox, which is hidden most of the time. Or both shifts together to leave guest operating system in Virtualbox or Vmware (or some other VM, I don't remember which one used that combination). What will you do?

Really considering buying one right now. Also how did you learn all these languages so fluently, damn.
The honesty and fairness on this channel is great
Awesome watching you speaking so many languages fluently.
Hey make a video on a trackball mouse you have there. I'm getting one myself and I have not found that many videos about it. It's a lot better than a regular mouse in my opinion.
2:35 funny you tell this, I personally found blank keycaps forced me to memorize and internalize the keymap on muscle level memory (typing this on 3d printed handwired split dactyl manuform with Colemak layout).
Edit: I'd suggest having a backup keyboard to enter your passwords would be helpful for first week or so - of course with laptop you have this built-in.
Same, I've never used legends. I'll first memorize the full layout from pen and paper fluently to make sure I don't introduce early bad habits and mistakes when I start rewiring my muscle memory.
The ergodox has staggered keys too, though
They're just staggered vertically, rather than horizontally
Inspired by your video I set up 1ms macros on my Anne Pro 2 so I could type the Portuguese characters çõãàê⪺ more easily using the Fn2 key, which I made to be right beside AltGr, this way I don't have to sacrifice the `~ key as a dead key as I use it a lot for programming. The more common chars áéíóú were already mapped to AltGr with just one key press on the "US Intl. with AltGr" layout on Linux. The good thing about Linux is that despite the ObinsKit limitations, I can input any char with macros just using the Ctrl+Alt+U unicode input mode (similar to the alt+numpad combo on windows), which is the case for ª and º
Is it jarring switching from a different keyboard layout to a normal one constantly, like you're laptop?
Not really. It's like switching between a bike and a car.
I though that this weird looking B (can not find in german keyboard) is same as 'ss' in german. Can you replace it in every word?
Yes, it pretty much is the same. Until recently (1990-2000) ß had always been used in place of double-s, but then they introduced a reform and now it's only used in some cases (e.g. after a long vowel). People will still understand if you write daß instead of dass, but it's not technically correct anymore
Two points:
1. There's definitely an advantage (at least for me personally and the way I use the keyboard) to a 40% instead of a larger keyboard. Quick access to arrow keys, the number pad, macros and even controlling the mouse without ever leaving the home row by just pressing, holding or double pressing macro buttons is a HUGE DEAL.
2. Blank keycaps are also better and less confusing for me, since the E button (for example) isn't just E for me, it is also 3, Next Track, F3 and # depending on which layer I am on.
I reallz enjoz zour kezboard videos! Being the layz American that I am, I’m reminded of the time I lived in Zurich and never bothered to learn the QWERTZ kezboard and instead just tzped everzthing from QWERTY muscle memorz. I hope zou do more kezboard videos in the future!
Why did I read it with German accent
Do you think i should get a niu mini or planck?
I'd say get whatever is available for cheaper. I haven't tried planck but they're similar to each other.
@@WolfgangsChannel nice! I bought the cyan one already. Can't wait for it to arrive. Btw is it okay to put in 3 pin key switches? Or must it be 5 pin?
as far as i know, 5-pin is PCB mounted and 3-pin is plate-mounted. You want to order 3-pin switches if I remember correcltly, but if you got 5-pin ones that's fine too, you can just cut the extra pins off with angle cutters.
What is the keyboard at 5:15?
hi, I wanted to know if anyone had a 2023 update?
How do you switch layouts? Why aren't you using something like "English International" which is mostly English layout, but has all those characters like ß and all others for any language using latin.
English International is mostly made for people who type English 99% of the time but occasionally need to type an accented letter here or there. I only need umlauts, ß, plus dead keys with acute, grave and circumflex accents. My modified layout makes it possible to access those letters quicker since I do type in German pretty often
Fuck, I am french and live near the German border you have a perfect German accents the french one is really good too. Cheer man dedication to language is good.

@@SaHaRaSquad ironic because its having the opposite effect on an ergonomic keyboard
Your mastery multiple language deserves a comment, and you know it. Very impressive.
Wow, really good french pronunciation !
But i had problem hearing the part when you said "En aucun cas"
It looks like the perfect vim keyboard, if you are not really concerned with other languages.
I regularly switch between several different keyboard layouts, so blank keycaps wouldn't be any less helpful than whatever static layout. A 40% keyboard just sounds a bit cumbersome when the language you're trying to type has more letters than you have keys on your keyboard.
To French speakers I wholeheartedly recommend bépo, you don't have to break your fingers while typing and it includes Æ and Œ, which are missing from the default AZERTY layout for some reason. Azerty is the worst layout I've tried so far, it doesn't even support the language it was supposedly designed for. I use the term "designed" lightly here, because in my headcanon they just messed up the QUERTY layout before slapping on some French letters for the sole purpose of being different.
>Azerty is the worst layout I've tried so far
Agreed
Where are you currently living? Germany?

As a French person with a weird keyboard with blank keycaps who learnt to type on a Dvorak layout but then considered Colemak and is now using Workman, I don't fully agree that blanks is such a bad idea! It's somewhat easier to have the legends on the keys, but a piece of paper with the layout on it between your keyboard and your screen does the trick too. Especially if the goal is to learn to touch type!
As for typing French, I made my own Workman keyboard layout with all the accented keys on the layer you get when pressing alt, including œ. I like it because Alt is in a comfortable spot on my keyboard and then I don't have to reach all the way to the number keys to type accents. But I guess it gets a lot more complicated when you regularly type German and Russian on top of that!
