The four main characters-Keanu, Carrie-Ann Moss, Laurence Fishburn, and Hugo Weaving-spent about 6 months doing extensive martial arts training, so the fighting they’re doing is really them. So impressive.
Wasn’t Keanu recovering from a broken neck? He was supposed to do more grabs and rolls, but due to his neck, they changed the choreography for more punches and kicks. Not sure where I remember hearing that from.
I remember watching The Matrix in 1999 and had no idea what I went into and my mind was absolutely blown like nothing before or after really. I've often thought, if there was one thing I could go back and do as if for the first time, it would be watching The Matrix. Your reaction was genuinely amusing and engrossing. I'm usually somewhat reluctant to watching people react to movies, but you were into the movie in a way that felt genuine and real and it made it interesting. So thanks for that.
I feel the same way- I had a group of friends who saw the movie first and they kept insisting I go see it. I felt like a drag making them see a movie they'd already seen- they kept saying it wasn't an issue, they wanted to see it again, and I would want to see it again, too. They wouldn't tell me what the Matrix actually was. It blew my mind. One of my top movie experiences.
i think matrix would only be my no 2 for that as i read about similar stuff before and knew that it has epic new bullet time technology ... so it wasn´t soooooo mindblowing for me (don´t get me wrong, still mindblowing! it´s the movie i have by far seen the most in my life). but my no 1 that i would like to watch again for the first time would be fight club.
I had no idea about this movie going into the theater in 99. Needless to say, when the credits rolled and lights came on, I had the dumbest smile on my face
Dude! This was exactly my experience, I can't remember why, I think I was there with friends and it was them that wanted to see Matrix so I really knew nothing, it became one of my top 5 movies. Exactly like you say, big dumb smile on my face after.
Lmao all I had was a supper bowl commercial in which I initially thought it was a sequel to Johnny Pneumonic! I still want anyway and would see it another two more times I’m theaters. Such an amazing movie that entertains with action, makes you think with philosophical questions, what more could you want??? It did way more than Phantom amenace, that’s for sure.
I watched this when it first came out but didn't really appreciate it to the degree it deserved. I thought it was just another good movie. 20 years later, I find myself re-watching it weekly. Nothing compares. (except maybe the LotR trilogy)
YUP! I had no idea what to expect. But that opening scene when Trinity kicked their ass and the camera spun around and she ran around the wall, my wife and I looked at each other and our mouths was just wide open. I was like running my finger between my lips going bubbububububububub We walked out of the theater, saw the line for the next showing of all the eager faces; we looked at each other, and we hopped right back in line for tickets and watched it a second time. The only movie I've ever done that. Ever.
Most underrated lines in the whole movie: "You think that's air you're breathing now?" - Morpheus can tell Neo doesn't get it "There is no spoon." - the kid can tell Neo doesn't get it "Guns. Lots of guns." - Neo, still not getting it "No." - Neo gets it and deletes Smith Among the best progressions of "show not tell" I can think of. And after all, "no one can be told what the Matrix is, they have to see it for themselves".
Quentin Tarantino said this is one of the best films ever and completely changed the cinema forever. I remember growing up that so many movies tried to copy and do what the matrix did, even to this day that is the case
I remember watching preview trailers of "Bullet time" with my son, we looked at each other and at the same time we said "this movie is going to be awesome." We were not disappointed. Saw it in theaters 3 times before I was satisfied I had an inkling of what is the Matrix. Watching it with Lady Popcorn brought back that initial feeling.
@@CrayCruz In one of the making ofs, I heard someone (camera man? fx specialist?) say they got inspiration from "Run, Lola run". I was quite surprised since it is a somewhat odd, maybe experimental German film. If you see it.. yes, indeed, it has some scenes that show similar, but much much more rudimentary shots. Like.. if you had folded a paper plan, enjoyed seeing how it flies.. and then you see a real plane or some majestic bird flying. Since I heard about this connection, I really love the Lola movie, though its nothing compared to the matrix, of course.
Stephen Colbert: "What do you think happens when we die, Keanu Reeves?" (audience laughs) Keanu Reeves: (he takes a deep breath) "I know that the ones who love us, will miss us." (audience wasn't expecting an amazing answer)
It was an answer of avoidance. Keanu is very private, and Stephen was attempting to unravel the enigma that is Keanu Reeves, but he was thwarted. Keanu can dodge contentious questions like Neo can dodge bullets. Thus, the mystery man remains a mystery.
@@ArcaneWorkshop ... no? It wasn't an answer of avoidance, it was a no bs answer about grasping or understanding loss. Watch the entire interview. Colbert was just being witty & expecting a witty answer. Keanu just caught him & the audience off guard, especially Colbert, given that both he & Keanu have gone through traumatic experiences (Colbert lost his father & two brothers in a plane crash when he was only 10 years old & Keanu's girlfriend delivered their baby stillborn & a year later she died in a car crash). That's why Colbert simply shook his hand & went on with.
You could see Colbert was aware of what he just asked right when he finished the question. Reeves knew he didn't want to be insensitive and made the best of it. Class act.
The "stoner movie" that Keanu Reeves is in is called "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," and I assure you, you _want_ to see that. It is most triumphant.
The ironic thing about Bill & Ted is that everyone assumes they are a couple of stoners, but they are really just a couple of nice, fun-loving dudes... in the film there are no drugs, no violence, nothing but positivity and brotherhood. Wyld Stallyns forever!
I feel like he's basically looked ambiguously "thirty-something" basically ever since he turned 30. At least if you don't get too close-in a zoom on his face. He's in fantastic shape, works really hard, takes good care of himself, and it all really shows.
The concept of the Matrix is based off of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. A few things you might have missed: Morpheus asked Neo “you think that’s air you’re breathing?” Insinuating that he wasn’t, and if he wasn’t there was no need for Cypher to sneeze or cough. It was just to give away their position. The Oracle told Neo that he was waiting “for another life.” He only became the one after dying.”

This film was deep in so many ways: The office manager to Mr. Anderson - "you think the rules don't apply to you." Then later Morpheus tells Neo about the One who bent the rules of the Matrix to his will. "you're my personal savior, my Jesus Christ. You've got to unplug." "Follow the white rabbit" Neo to the dude at the door: "Remember if you get caught..." Young dude: "Yeah, I know you don't exist." His room number is 101, which binary code. So much information is passed on in those couple of minutes, that, at first and second viewings in the theater, went completely over my head. It took several more viewings at home until I got it. Such a fantastic film.

For some reason, seeing people's reaction to the simulation reveal scene always puts me right back to that movie theater seat in 1999. Goosebumps every time.
The matrix being a simulation isn't the "twist", it's the premise! People weren't going to the cinema expecting Keanu Reeves to play a computer programmer for 2 hours.
I seriously loved how in the beginning it was “I have no desire to see it” but by the end, 1000% invested and holding on to the edge of the bed lol. Quality reaction vid to one of the all time greatest movies!
Part 2 and 3 are really gonna bake your noodle. But I would also recommend watching The Animatrix, which is a set of animated shorts that fill in a lot of gaps, particularly "The Second Renaissance Parts 1 and 2" which provides the backstory of the war between the Machines and humans, and "The Final Flight Of The Osiris" which leads directly into the events of the next movie The Matrix Reloaded.
This movie is so famous that at the beginning of Lord of the Rings The fellowship of the Ring when Lord Elron (played by the same actor, Hugo Weaving) appears on screen-i heard several people in the theater say “Mr Anderson”, lol
My late wife always talked through every movie we ever watched and I always had to "shhhhh" her. Watching you watch these reminds me so much of watching movies with her and does my heart good. Oh, and you are adorable.

Cassie. Cassie. Cassie. Asking for a Bulletproof force field, what fun would that be. We gotta dodge some bullets. Then dodge more bullets while flipping on walls. Kicking butt fighting Kung Fu. Can we upload flying a helicopter in less than 10 seconds. It's so much more than you know. Enjoy the ride.
They can't do that anyways. Guns already exist in the matrix, so a copy of that code, would go unnoticed. But a forcefield would get picked up by the anticheat. Unless it was VAC.
Plus, just making a force field wouldn't work. It's too far out. Your mind has to believe it. Remember that first rooftop jump Morpheus makes, Neo doesn't make it all the way across? Because his mind couldn't accept that he could jump that far. By the end when he fully believes it's a simulation, then he can do so much more. I be you as they do these extraordinary things within the matrix, they are constantly fighting thier mind's attempt to revert to what would be normal, or doable if the world was real.
fugu pinkeye I love it. I see a start of a whole string of things cost business infinity gauntlet, magical rings of power. And it goes on and on. I love the deep analysis here. let's keep it going.
The Matrix raises lots of existential questions such as “what is the nature of reality?”, and “will creating the singularity lead to the inevitable destruction of humans”, and “what does make one noodle place better than the other?”. Questions we may never have the answers to.
To be honest I think the first two questions may be answered someday in a distant future. I have no hope fore the third one though, this will forever stay a mystery :)
The philosophical aspect is what makes it my favorite. I had been reading & thinking about many of these topics in college when I went to the theater to see this. Walking out, I truly felt skepticism in a palpable, tangible way-as opposed to purely intellectual- for the first time everything around me was completely up for question. This movie was my red pill moment
I have to say, as deep and confusing as The Matrix can be at times, you hardly missed a thing, you grasped the concept of The Matrix being a simulation that humans are plugged into in those pods, and right away made an inference that Cypher was a bad dude. All of your comments were great. Well done!
@@judgeomega Are you saying it’s better than Shawshank Redemption or Godfather Part 1? IMO it’s impossible to say which is better hence why most people use the term, “one of the best”. Because that is something we can all agree upon.
I always watch this movie with my students when reading Plato's Allegory of the Cave. It illustrates the point well enough and It's a good excuse to watch a good movie.
I think many don't realise in 1999. Less than 10% of people owned a computer and even then it was dial up internet. Internet cafes and Adsl wasn't even a thing in most places. So a movie about programs and coding was just mind blowing and had everyone questioning reality
What I love about The Matrix is how much there is if you dig deeper into the meaning behind it. For instance, my favorite line is from the Oracle, when after Neo knocks over the vase she told him not to worry about, she says, "What's really going to bake your noodle later on is, would you still have broken it if I hadn't said anything?" This does two things. First, it indicates that her prophecies are very much real. Second, it hints at how she likes to operate, subtly twisting the fates of those around her into the optimal position for her desired outcome.
Dark City did it first! Great movie on par with the Matrix in its own way. Sadly it underperformed in box office and Matrix got all the glory (not a bad thing). I find Dark City more subtle about its allusions and themes and works as a noir movie while Matrix scores high with its action, visuals, and Star power. I think both are great
I loved this movie when I first saw it. Used to watch it over and over back in the 90s. I watched it again a couple weeks ago, first time in a very long time. For some reason it didn’t hold up as well. I can’t figure out why. Maybe it was just the mood I was in. I dunno. I was really kinda disappointed, cause I used to consider it one of my favorite movies.
@@Kharmatos13 I came here to say to look out for the 13th Floor as well. Came out about the same time iirc and just got buried by The Matrix, but still an interesting concept along the same lines.
I think the part where the Oracle tells him "not too bright though" when he asks who likes him is one of my favorite moments in the movie. I didn't expect the Oracle to have that kind of sense of humor. The way Gloria Foster says line helps too. She's not mocking him, or sounding disappointed in him. She's just evaluating him, adding that to her list of Neo's skills and stats. Neo apparently didn't put enough points into Intelligence.
I Felt every moment of that in my bones. Had me tearing up a little remembering the first time I watched it over at my grandma's all those years ago. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This movie had the best ad campaign back in '99. Bus stops, malls, TV... everywhere you went the poster was just the code and a line that read "What is the Matrix?"
Before watching the sequels you should totally check out The Animatrix, which is a brilliant collection of animated short films, some of which give you more lore about the world, other hint at where the series goes next. Each short is in a different style of animation, it's fantastic.
I loved watching your perspective change. From confused and seeming disinterested but watching "because you had to", to being so excited at the ending and not wanting it to end.
It's one of the oldest questions asked, what is real. And horrifyingly, if a simulated universe can be created, it's incredibly likely that we're in one.
@@SAVikingSA Granted, but the possibility that our bodies exist outside the simulated universe is fairly small. And if there is not a reality that we can interact with beyond the simulation, it becomes no longer a simulation for all intents and purposes, merely the fact that the universe is created. @@SAVikingSA it’s not horrifying if I can’t do anything about it. It’s just background noise to think about bc either way I’ve still gotta feed my family.

Her feelings after the movie of wanting to see more and to see Neón take on the machines and liberate the world is pretty much how we all felt back in 1999. But we all had to wait 4 years.
I think the problem with those that waited didn't fully appreciate the trilogy as whole and I think someone outside the hype-train will enjoy it more the first time around.
When Agent Smith shoots Neo and kills him, that look you gave the camera had me almost falling out of my chair laughing. It was the best WTF look I have seen in a long time.
You have to imagine watching this in 1999 in the cinema, never seen all these special effects, the bullet time etc. It sat a new standard for decades to come and i watched it probably a few hundred times since i saw it in the cinema, it became instant a timeless classic.
I actually did see it in cinema theatre in 1999 on the weekend it came out. And it was during a storm, so it was raining outside just as heavily as it was raining towards the beginning of the film, before Neo was pulled out of the Matrix. And the power went out right as Neo took the red pill from Morpheus. The theatre refunded all our tickets and we had to come back the next night.
I was 16 when i saw this movie in theaters and let me tell you, it changed me. I was immediately hooked.
Learning that this movie won 4 Oscars including for VFX shows how much it earned it’s reputation today.
i think matrix would only be my no 2 for that as i read about similar stuff before and knew that it has epic new bullet time technology ... so it wasn´t soooooo mindblowing for me (don´t get me wrong, still mindblowing! it´s the movie i have by far seen the most in my life). but my no 1 that i would like to watch again for the first time would be fight club.

We walked out of the theater, saw the line for the next showing of all the eager faces; we looked at each other, and we hopped right back in line for tickets and watched it a second time.
The only movie I've ever done that. Ever.
Most underrated lines in the whole movie:
"You think that's air you're breathing now?" - Morpheus can tell Neo doesn't get it
"There is no spoon." - the kid can tell Neo doesn't get it
"Guns. Lots of guns." - Neo, still not getting it
"No." - Neo gets it and deletes Smith
Among the best progressions of "show not tell" I can think of.

Stephen Colbert: "What do you think happens when we die, Keanu Reeves?" (audience laughs)
Keanu Reeves: (he takes a deep breath) "I know that the ones who love us, will miss us." (audience wasn't expecting an amazing answer)
Yeah dude, perfect fucking answer. Keanu is a Zen Master. Would love to see him in Star Wars as a Jedi Master.

I just love how open minded you approach new movies, even if they don't seem interesting or you aren't really into the genre.
The "stoner movie" that Keanu Reeves is in is called "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," and I assure you, you _want_ to see that.
It is most triumphant.
Iron Maiden? Excellent!
The ironic thing about Bill & Ted is that everyone assumes they are a couple of stoners, but they are really just a couple of nice, fun-loving dudes... in the film there are no drugs, no violence, nothing but positivity and brotherhood. Wyld Stallyns forever!
They definitely aren't stoners, BTW - they just have a kind of "surfer" lingo going.

Reeves is 35 here. It is incredible how well he’s aged. He’s 56 and could easily pass for 40, IMO.
I feel like he's basically looked ambiguously "thirty-something" basically ever since he turned 30. At least if you don't get too close-in a zoom on his face. He's in fantastic shape, works really hard, takes good care of himself, and it all really shows.
Didn't you know he is an immortal?
he looks 25 in the film, nevermind 35. the guy ages incredibly
He’s among those that do not age. Will Smith, Hallie Barry & more. Some are lucky that way
"Ted" Theodore Logan is almost as old as my grandpa when he died? Goddam now I feel old
The concept of the Matrix is based off of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.

They can't do that anyways. Guns already exist in the matrix, so a copy of that code, would go unnoticed. But a forcefield would get picked up by the anticheat. Unless it was VAC.
Well an aimbot would have been helpful at least.
They can't create things that don't exist in the Matrix.

What I love about The Matrix is how much there is if you dig deeper into the meaning behind it. This does two things. First, it indicates that her prophecies are very much real.

The concept of humans living in a "simulated reality" (for lack of a better term) can be found in the Allegory of the Cave in The Republic by Plato
Which is something that humankind has believed for thousands of years.
@@SAVikingSA it’s not horrifying if I can’t do anything about it. It’s just background noise to think about bc either way I’ve still gotta feed my family.
the concept predates that. humans have always been aware of that possibility because we dream, and we understand that dreams are not real, and yet they feel real when you are in them.

It was wonderful to see how you gradually realized what was behind it. That moment where the realization came ... incredibly valuable and very unique
I was about 10 or 11 when I first saw the Matrix and it blew my tiny little mind. All these years later and it is still one of my favourite films
"I'm sure there's whole forums on the Internet dedicated to unpacking that."
And so it begins.
Your reaction was heartfelt and lovely 😀 classic film. In 1999 this film completely revolutionised special FX, motion capture and CGI, nothing even close to it had been tried before. Let alone great idea, script, acting.
"bullet-proof forcefields...with guns that would just put them to sleep"
That has to be the most mom-like line i've ever heard 😂
"Hurry, hurry, hurry, squids are attacking them!" Keep 'em coming!!!
This is exactly how we felt when we left the theatre! Mind blown and speechless.
Yeah, I saw it 4 times in the theater back then.
Watched it in La Puente, Virginia Beach, and even East LA with Spanish Subtitles.
As someone who's been watching The Matrix since they were 5 years old, watching you first time react to it has been an adorable and funny reminder of how intense this film is.
I’m so happy you liked it. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time.
Who’s “Neón”? lol
@@sinemakane7643 Maybe but someone like me who watched it back in 1999 and again in 2003 will never know lol
When Agent Smith shoots Neo and kills him, that look you gave the camera had me almost falling out of my chair laughing. It was the best WTF look I have seen in a long time.
Asking loads of good questions immediately, I really appreciate that.
And yes, it was such an amazing movie at that time that I actually went back and saw it multiple times.
@@WardenDios it is something you cannot do anymore, if you have seen any action/scifi movie the last 20 years you are spoiled and will never experience the shock and awe of seeing it without knowing about this movie, there is so much in it that changed the genre forever, i can see it with my son if he sees movies like the matrix, he doesnt get the point and sees nothing special as he has seen it in other newer movies😉
I saw it for the first time on a vhs, in an the attic of a distant family branch, on what I assumed was a crappy tv because the movie was all green. Very eery. Loved it.
@@robber576 It's because The Matrix was driven by nothing but gimmicks. The story is horribly done.
@@jedijones if you refer to part 2&3 you may be right, if you are talking about part 1 as a single movie/entity i asume you are just a kid who wasnt born or to young in 1999 to form a decent opinion, giving your opinion on something that happened 20 years ago is not valid in any way.
"my palms are sweaty just watching this"...
my brain: knees weak, arms are heavy...moms spaghetti
The movie was so well ahead of its time it's actually a miracle the movie was made
"That's the one-ness I was waiting for!"...So love your reactions!
Hahaha "Oops! I just spilt more." 🍿 🤣
Edit;
But, did you _really?!_ 😎
I was 13 when the movie came out and I was one of those guys that thought leather trench coats and sunglasses were the coolest thing ever in high school because of it.
I was a goth throughout the 90s and then when The Matrix came out everyone thought I was trying to be Neo.
After Columbine any outsider was hunted
Thought you were Neo but just ended up looking like the guy from Grandma’s boy 😂🤣😂🤣
as someone who's watched this movie countless times, it was really fun to watch you discover the matrix for yourself and i'm really glad you liked it. it is really mind-blowing the first time watching it. may i suggest, even before watching the others, that you watch it at least one more time? i hope you do reaction videos for the other two as well. can't wait to see what you think of them!
That was entertaining to watch all those reactions to the scenes. You understood it sure better than I did back in 1999.
Who tells someone they wouldn't like The Matrix, honestly like what the hell : P
It's a complete nonsensical mountain of crap in a musical videoclip fashion
@@JulioLeonFandinho you think The Matrix is crap ?
