People are very attached to their dogs, loving them as much as would a child. There's a number of movies in which the the death of a dog spurs the hero to finally abandon all restraint and punish the villain. In building up the evilness of a villain in a story, it's terrible that they do horrible, illegal crimes, but the final straw that really condemns them to their fate is harming an innocent. Even among the roughest of bad guys, there's still an understood idea that you don't harm defenseless innocents like the old, the frail, women, children, and especially dogs who in their good natured innocence would be friendly to anyone. Any criminal who shows himself willing to harm defenseless innocents as marked himself deserving of death.
In the movie "Open Range" the character played by Robert Duvall is an old, stoic, tough cowboy who has probably seen and endured near everything imaginable. When he's reciting all of the evil acts the villain has committed, it's not until the end of the list, when he says the villain "killed our dog" that his voice cracks, he gets choked up, and is struggling to hold his emotions in check and not cry.

An antihero (sometimes spelled as anti-hero) or antiheroine is a main character in a story who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes, such as idealism, courage, and morality. The simple revenge plot is what made it so popular when it came out, it harkens back to the simpler action movies of the 80's/90's but with a modern flair, it appealed to the older audience but found a new audience too and really took off.

You have to remember Neo is "the one", this was Keanu's return to being an action star and the manner in which they portrayed the action was very Neo esque minus the bullet time cameras and the wire work.

Your reaction was super fun to watch, I read somewhere that keanu really related to the character of John Wick because he too lost his girlfriend to an accident many years back and that affected him a whole lot on an emotional level. This movie in a way was his tribute to that and also shot his fame up internationally.
