Unlike most films with twists, the thing people who have never seen this movie have heard about it is "I see dead people" which is a very minor twist (you're initially led to think the child has some weird telepathic phenomenon). The real twist is the end, and anyone who tells me they've never watched the film, I have to recommend it, because the twist is just too well done.

Yeah, it was the first and one of the only times a movie got me like that. And yes, everyone else too in the movie theatre. Sure, I was only 16 - but THIS is the movie that made me aware this is possible and I was looking out for clues towards twists ever since and I haven't been tricked since. I don't always get it right away of course, but when the movie actually reveals the twist I know it. Because I look for them all the time (which blundered some movies for me because I was awaiting the twist until the very end, lol) - and it's because of this movie. Great one.

I know right. 'When Bruce Willis was dead at the end of sixth sense... i jizzed in my pants'. I love twist endings. I never try to figure them out i want to be surprised. I love the old black and white Twilight Zone. At the start of the film i was like wait isn't he dead? Oh well i guess not. The real test is can you watch it again knowing the twist and does it make sense? Some don't. And do they drop you hints? You watch this one again and you notice that when Bruce Willis is in the restaurant his place isn't set. He has no silverware, napkin, plate or glass.

This is the best thing. It's weird for me to think that this was 20 years ago. It's weird to think that The Princess Bride was 35 years ago. But people who are grown-ass adults have been born and grown up and lived their whole lives without necessarily being exposed to some of the best stories ever put on film. It used to be that you had to be living under a rock not to have been exposed to (at very least) the spoiler plot twists of great movies. Now, though, they're just things that people haven't encountered in their lives. It's a golden age for reaction videos because there's so much great content that young people never encountered-stuff that has really stood the test of time well.
I guess it would be like an old fogey reacting to things like "The African Queen" or "Judgment at Nuremberg" that were way before my time, but are timeless in their own way. It's weird to think that some of the movies I grew up on as a kid, like "The Goonies," totally became that for another generation, and others, like "Weekend at Bernie's II," totally didn't.

Twenty years later, this movie really isn't talked about that much now. I can't remember the last time someone brought up The Sixth Sense in conversation - so it's easy for this movie to slip out of the public consciousness. It's what I call a "party trick" movie - once you know the "trick", it's not as interesting anymore. This is likely why it faded into relative obscurity.

Even though the final plot twist is so surprising, even if the ghosts were scary... you still have this sense that everything is all right.

No one saw the clues because we were all being misdirected. We saw him with the boy’s mom like they just finished a conversation, but they never actually interact on film. There are dozens of little misdirects that allowed for what many consider the biggest twist in film history. Btw, the thing that mom was feeding her child was pine floor cleaner. The psychological term for mom’s behavior is called Münchausen syndrome by proxy.

"Münchausen syndrome by proxy" Should look up the wiki on it. WOW The controversy and legal status parts are interesting.
You think the name would not be limited only to illness for attention, proxy or otherwise. Being an expert to weave fantastic stories seems to apply. Woman jailed for that experts fiction cost her 6 years, once released she drowned herself in booze till dying from it. I see why after already losing your kids and everyone thinks ya done it.
I guess guy didn't want to be wrong about anything 'for the children' and well a few innocent people had to suffer his wrath just in case. So 1 in 8500 or 200 became 1 in 73,000,000. Quite a jump. Honor and glory outta it and a knighthood to boot.
Or actually that one guy who wrote stories. Claas Relotius, a fraudster who won all the journalistic awards. Now that's a Münchausen. Der Spiegel's reputation probably took a huge hit. What's that saying about a lie twice around the world before the truth even gets up, those lies took a relaxing cruise ship while getting it's two trips in.
Just remembered my friend's brother lost one of their kids, shrinks sniffing around and accusing looking for a feather in their cap.
It was SIDS but there was an investigation and of course the experts wanted them other kids. God how long ago was it. Now they grown, boy looking cool and one of their daughters that used to be skinny with the face of her father now looks exactly like the mother. It's trippy seeing twins.
"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on." I guess twice makes more modern sense maybe more with the speed of info, and yet truth still slow as ever.

I would highly recommend Dr. Charles Derry's book the Suspense Thriller. While this is a good movie, it's not a suspense thriller. It's a horror mystery. Thrillers are almost the opposite of mysteries. The audience has more information than the characters.
The best illustration of the difference is imagine a scene where two characters are talking and then a bomb goes off, killing them both. No suspense. However, do the same scene again but show someone plant the bomb ahead of time and suddenly the audience is on the edge of their seat during the boring conversation, anticipating the explosion and possibly hoping the characters might find the bomb. The audience is far more engaged in the second scenario. 90% of Hitchcock's movies were suspense thrillers.
The core of a suspense thriller is creating conflict in the minds of the audience. On one hand, they don't want characters to die when a bomb goes off. However, some part of them would actually like to see the bomb go off. These are mutually exclusive events. They can't both happen, so the audience struggles with themselves over contradictory desires. This is best summed up in the scene in Psycho when Norman pushes the car into bog, it starts to sink... but then it stops. The audience holds their breath, because part of them wants Norman to get away unpunished, but the other part wants justice for Marion, but these are mutually exclusive desires. Thus, the audience holds their breath as the car pauses sinking, and they don't release it until it starts to sink again.

The movie went to great lengths to show Malcolm with the mother when her son enters the room and at the table with his wife for their anniversary. With the context put into place and without suggesting otherwise, the audience filled the gaps that Malcolm was hired by the mother to treat her son which she worried for and Malcolm's wife was on non-speaking terms with Malcolm. It's actually quite amazing how far context goes to tell a story, and for me at least, the most impressive thing about this film is the ability to make you make assumptions that the plot didn't explicitly state to make the twist work at the end.

A very cocky, but admittedly extremely intelligent friend of mine that I watched it with was very eye-rolly the whole time until we got to the twist and he was visibly shook. Hello Cassie
Yes when it came out nobody figured out by the time of the ending. Everyone that watch it was asked not to tell others of the ending so as not to spoil it for other viewers. If I remember right, the secret only lasted about 4 to 8 months. But it did not really matter, the experience to the ending was its most captivating aspect of the movie. Malcolm trying to help Cole while he is terrified and afraid to look like a "freak" had its own appeal. Cole slowly growing more confident and brave because Malcolm (the ghost) was talking to him and not trying to scare him or hurt him. It showed him that not all ghosts are there to "bad" purpose and he can be actually help them.
The scary guy in Malcolm bathroom is played by Donnie Wahlberg (of New Kids on the Block fame, 'Blue Bloods' tv show, and also Mark Wahlberg's older brother). He is playing a person much like Cole that Malcolm could not help about 20 years earlier as a young child psychologist. He did not believe that he could see ghosts. Hence, this is why when Malcolm says "Gimme me a minute" when trying to remember who he is, he yells back "I been waiting 30 years!" He shoots because he has lived with the fear and paranoia for sooo long. He is tired to lived that way. So he shoots because Malcolm failed him and then shoots himself because he is tired of living that way. It is also meant to mean what Cole would become without his help. It is also a form of redemption for Malcolm by helping and succeeding where he had failed in the past before moving on to the afterlife.

But people like me, whom watching movies is a very subjective thing, they don't always connect the dots. I was so riveted by what was happening to these characters that I never saw the bigger picture in terms of what really happened. Never saw the twist coming. But I feel in that happening, it made the story all the more meaningful and poignant and beautiful. It made the scares more impactful and emotionally based. This is one of my favorite M. So... My first thought when I watched this movie was that Malcolm was dead. They did such a good job of insinuating that he was interacting with the world that I just assumed I was wrong and forgot all about until the reveal.

It's fun to look back over the movie a second time because you see how delicately balanced the interactions he has with the mother and the wife are. There are no cheats, even knowing they don't know he is there, the scenes make sense. Very, very cleverly done.

If you have any knowledge of literature (this is for everyone), you can see the twist coming. Classic Ambrose Bierce short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" has the same exact twist. A man during the civil war is about to be hung but escapes to get back to his long lost love. When he finds her, he jerks his head back and we realize he's dead. He imagined this outcome in the split second it took to fall from the Bridge hanging by the rope. That story has influenced many filmmakers over the years with its twist ending. None moreso than M Night who took it for The Sixth Sense. It's a very clever, well made film but not as original as one would think.

Oh yeah, you're absolutely NOT dumb, it's just a really clever "ghost" story that fooled all of us. This movie took all moviegoers by surprise when it came out. It was a cultural moment when we all collectively realized this movie literally required a second viewing to start, AND its impact is wholly different on that second viewing, too. :)

I remember that so well... that twist absolutely took the world by surprise. The word of mouth to go see this, "but I'm not telling you anything more" was non-stop and fever pitched. And going back to see it knowing at least one person in the audience hadn't yet was fun too.

Most people didn't see the twist coming so you're definitely not alone in that one. I worked in a theater when this came out and I'll never forget how crazy busy the screenings were for this. It pretty much was all based on the word of mouth. People seeing it, seeing the twist, the amazing story and acting and then telling their friends and going again to watch it looking for clues on the second viewing. That entire weekend, all the screenings were full and even the second weekend. It was nothing short of a sensation. Amazingly I didn't even watch it the first weekend (because i worked) but when I got a free moment during the week, I saw it and was absolutely blown away. I saw it four times in the theater taking different friends to see it. It is just a bit sad that after this, it's a steady decline for Shyamalan... there's a few decent ones after this like Signs and Unbreakable but the rest... yikes. The absolute worst though has to be his version of Avatar the Last Airbender and his interpretation of it and his defense of his decisions.

What really made this movie stand out with respect to Shyamalan's other films is that all the clues were there to piece together the ending. You legit could have figured it out the moment the kid says, "I see dead people. They only see what they want to see." Signs, for instance, there was legit no way you could have pieced together the ending, though it did tie in a lot of things that happened in the movie. Shyamalan's definitely got talent, but I do think the Sixth Sense was a carefully crafted and thought-up masterpiece with respect to his other work. My guess is he was simply told to write scripts for new movies since Sixth Sense was such a success and writers can't simply muse new masterpieces on demand.

I still can't believe Shyamalan made this movie, lol. It really feels like he got lucky after having seen flop after flop and disappointment after disappointment. It's like he got lucky, but it wasn't luck as each scene was carefully crafted. I think he still has 1 more great movie in him, but not sure if he'll reach it.

@@ghenry4513 At the time, his movies lost some magic because everyone went in knowing there was a big twist.
But his movies weren't flops, Unbreakable made 3 times profit, Signs made 5 times profit, The Village made 4 times profit. Lady in the Water is probably the worst, but even that made a tiny profit.

Beautiful, emotional movie that blindsided me. We went in not knowing anything to an early sneak preview screening in a sold out theater, and everyone was in tears at the end. When the lights came up, not many people had left. Everyone was hanging out, talking about what they'd just seen. Yeah, the twist was amazing and all. But I became obsessed with the artistry of the film. The look, the music, the wonderful acting. It's still one of my favorite movies ever.

I never saw this as a scary movie. I was married for about a year when I took my wife out to see this. She was scared out of her mind and felt so bad for the kid, but by the end she was in tears when Bruce Willis figures out what had happened to him. This was one of the few Shyamalan movies that I really enjoyed. This and Signs are the only two that I can watch over and over.
Edit: I forgot to add a sentence in that original comment. I said I never saw this as a scary movie. I meant to add that I actually looked at this movie as a tragedy, in that the protagonist realizes the truth about what had happened to him, as he comes to grips in understanding why he no longer could communicate with his wife, etc. I always thought it was so sad.

I love your reactions. I saw the movie when it came out in '99 and later took my aunt Pat to see it. I had to explain the ending to her, as she had gotten a bit up in years (she only a few months shy of her 75th birthday) and it was around this time I saw her showing signs of "forgetfulness" which eventually resolved into full-blown alzheimers. But she enjoyed the movie, and loved the twist once I explained it to her.

The director was concerned about the "I see dead people" scene, because it gave it all away right there, and yet the twist caught most people. I got it when the kid told him that he wasn't going to see Willis anymore. I had to muffle my reaction because I realized the people around me hadn't made that connection yet.

It's definitely a rewatcher this 1, oh my god on the rewatches.
I love watching youtubers just now seeing this thing through their first time.
You know I actually have vague memories of watching this with my mum our first time when I was about 11 or 12.
And picking up on NONE of the things she was, everything she said during the first watch was so utterly obvious the next year, it tended to be around October time back then, TV doesn't seem to do that so much now, but there's also a bajillion more chanels now to sift through.
That scene with the under stairs door just not opening after that empty table & entirely 1 sided conversation in the restaurant, my mum had it sussed pretty quickly, he never interacts with anyone else after that opening scene, except the only person in the entire movie who sees dead people, once that was revealed it was pretty obvious to her.
    But I hadn't a fking clue.
