You guys add a lot to this-I tried listening to O&A on RUclips, but it doesn’t seem as funny to me without your commentary (I had never heard them before this).
Hearing the tl;Dr perspective from you young folks is hilarious! Listening to S4Sam live, I never thought of it as "become a sex offender for life, win brewery tour." ROFL But that's exactly what it was!
Another layer to the mayor prank was the he was on a plane so they couldn’t get ahold of him for a while and then they thought he was really dead for a bit
O and A should not have been fired for it. They didn't actually break FCC rules and their station signed off. That's why they weren't fired. If they could have fired them for cause it would have voided the contract and retained the non-compete.
I was a big fan of O&A back in those days. I was in their studio one time hanging out when they had a chimp there. I followed the Voyeur bus on my bike up and down Broadway. I smoked a joint with Psycho Mark. Those were grand days, miss them
so being from the uk and growing up on bootlegs of stern finding an archive and listening to all of o&a is not just amazing radio but just refreshing to listen to how we once were unoffended by everything and just having fun.. there were fcc regs but wow this really wouldnt happen now. currently in 2001 and today heard sfs 2 so im here
Mercurio had pretty much admitted that he stuck around and kept being confrontational because he figured that's what O & A would have wanted on the radio and it would have made his stock go up on the show.
It should be noted and added, that one of the reasons Mercurio was never allowed back on to Opie and Anthony, was because O&A were mad at him for the event...it was because Opie carried that grudge and had the idea of "How dare you get me fired off my show when i couldve dumped out or never took the call. Its YOUR fault." There was a time where Flea (one of the O and A "fans") was at a gig that Mercurio was doing and yelled out that he caused the firing and he was an asshole. The show got word of it and brought Flea to task, but as Opie brought up Paul he kept saying "We're through with him, and moved on from him". Anthony and Jim mentioned they still talked to him but Opie stood on the statement of "We're done with him and have moved on." Opie pretty much was saying "Im never allowing Paul Mercurio back on the show, even though everyone forgave. But no, hes not allowed on MY show."
“this is legal isn’t it?” I hope you didn’t think that was live. That was from the voyeur bus day. Rick Delgado on the bus. That was a sound drop. And i’m not sure whether you were actually having trouble finding that show, but in case you were. ruclips.net/video/5ZhEaDekkdE/видео.htmlsi=I95ooYpIWfQnntkO
Im from the future, the year is 2024 and the Bud Light lady tanked Bud Light way worse than Jim ever effected Sam Adams. Guys everywhere have Jim a pass.
I'm more surprised how O&A completely booked on Paul Mecurio for the rest of their Opie & Anthony careers. Why were they mad at him, when they set him up for this?
Opie was likely the driving force of that grudge, but Paul was the reason this blew up the way it did. If he just got in and got out, there wouldn't have been a story to get picked up. Instead, he pretty much dared the cops to arrest him.
@WiGgYof09 yeah, but Paul mecurio was doing what just about every Opie & Anthony comic (and Opie & Anthony themselves) was doing at that time; trying to make everything as edgy and over the top as possible. Remember, they got away with so much over-the-top stuff from 1998-2002, they were pretty much thinking "A) we're pretty much gonna get away with everything, & B) on the off Chance we get fired, we'll find a better job elsewhere" (as Anthony famously said on TV when O&A were on letterman, leno, and hannity & comes "our saying at the time was, 'if we screw up, we screw UP'. But sex for Sam 3 was the end of that").
On a later show O & A talked about writing the list of potential sites for the Sex for Sam 3 participants. Opie added "in a church" almost as an afterthought, mostly just to be edgy. They didn't expect anyone to actually consider having sex in a church, especially not the most iconic cathedral in NYC. They were so close to avoiding this whole mess if only Opie resisted his instinct to be shocking. There may be plenty of blame to go around, but this is where it should start.
It was a perfect storm of events. Opie put it on the lost, Anthony told Paul he had to actually go inside the church, Paul wouldn't just leave and kept running his mouth, etc. There were plenty of instances where this could have been avoided.
Funny thing is Ant says, these couples can’t be doing it outside of these places, they need to go inside, BUT he also said at the end of that call “we’ll give this couple the points….. “ but Mercurio was already in challenge accepted mode
The long running issue with cancel culture is that over the long run it makes us turn inward, stop creating, and start looking at our past as crazy and immoral. That’s how we know cancel culture is complete- we look at ourselves as strangers. Opie and Anthony were the perfect example of NYC in the early 2000s. The show made sense for the time and place. They were extreme, and made a mockery of it… but that was NYC in the early 2000s. Put Sex for Sam 3 in a time capsule. I’d argue culture has stalled- do we really need a 54th marvel movie or another remake of a remake? Give me the Wiffle Ball Bat Competition any day.
Something yo.note, Opie and Anthony were not actually number 1 in New York. They were number 1 in certain demos, but they were far from number 1 overall.
It was Paul mecurio’s fault - the security guard would have let them walk if he didn’t mouth off - this was clear the day it was broadcasting live on WNEW
I’m not a shock jock guy by any stretch, but the O&A episodes are FASCINATING. I listened to Sex For Sam III twice in a row.
One of my favorite episodes we’ve done.

The Memories this brings of me listening to this as a teenager is PRICELESS!! 😂😂

great episode. more o&a please
They became a lot more interesting when they calmed down a bit and it all became about the conversations.
Im with gay blind mike on this one.

I'm sorry to hear that. You were the exact part of the audience they hated.
@@rydz656 are you on crack or something?

Omg, I’m f***ing dense; I’ve listened to this for a week before I figured out what a balloon knot was 😅
Balloon knot
Anthony just HAD to be a stickler for the rules at that very moment. If he just shut up, Paul wouldn't have gone in.

You should do the history of Kirk and Callahan
More O&A / Jocktober please

Op: Your mom's box.
Ant: Oh no! Your mom's box.

Also, the man that couple, Brian Florence, died like a year later
Feast of the ASSumption!!

Maybe so Patrice could make fun of his juicy lips
